Book SynopsisBorder insecurity is not a new phenomenon. For more than 25 years, Congress has increased border security resources in response to this challenge only to see illegal crossings and criminal enterprises continue to operate by shifting to other, less secure, areas of the border. Since 9/11, billions of dollars have been spent on border security personnel, infrastructure and technology. The United States Border Patrol has more agents in the field today than at any time in history. There are also more miles of fencing and a wider array of technological solutions to help detect illicit crossings and the movement of narcotics than ever before. Yet, nearly everyone agrees that the border is not as secure as it needs to be. This book provides a blueprint for southern border security, and discusses opportunities that exist to strengthen collaborative mechanisms along the southwest border.

Nova Science Publishers Inc War: An Introduction to Theories & Research on

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWar describes a situation of armed conflict between two or more parties. There are several ways in which we can classify wars. The major division in the academic literature is between interstate wars and civil wars. The former is fought out between two or more states; the latter between groups belonging to the same state. There exists a vast literature, a large part of it quantitative, on both types of conflict. The majority of wars are civil wars. This book introduces the reader to the concept of war, and also to the different schools of thought as well as to the research methods pertaining to this area of research. It is an edited book containing articles written by several causes of war researchers. War is an important subject of study. The nature of war has changed over time, leaving the civilian population increasingly vulnerable. It has negative impacts beyond the direct casualties and the damaged infrastructure and economy in the countries in question. This book is intended to reach a wide audience, ranging from Bachelor and Master students in the social sciences, as well as to researchers and others with an interest for the subject. The aim of this work is both to give an outline of the literature, as well as providing examples of different schools of thought within the causes of war'' literature. It gives the reader a comprehensive account of the research on causes of war'', ranging from the old classics, like e.g., Clausewitz and Sun Tzu, to up-to-date research. The contributors in this book are chosen to represent a variety of perspectives on the causes of conflict.

Nova Science Publishers Inc U.S. Small Vessel Security Strategy: Elements &

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, maritime security efforts have focused primarily on large commercial vessels, cargoes, and crew. Efforts to address the small vessel environment have largely been limited to traditional safety and basic law enforcement concerns. Small vessels are, however, readily vulnerable to potential exploitation by terrorists, smugglers of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), narcotics, aliens, and other contraband, and other criminals. Small vessels have also been successfully employed overseas by terrorists to deliver Waterborne Improvised Explosive Devices (WBIEDs). The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its components -- such as the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) -- have started or completed initiatives to address small vessel security risks, but DHS is not tracking the progress being made to address action items in the Small Vessel Security Strategy (SVSS) Implementation Plan. This book examines what actions, if any, DHS and its components have taken to address small vessel security concerns, and the extent to which they have implemented action items in the SVSS Implementation Plan.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Revocation of Personnel Security Clearances:

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense (DOD) both have systems that track varying levels of detail related to revocations of employees'' security clearances. DHS''s and DOD''s data systems could provide data on the number of and reasons for revocations, but they could not provide some data, such as the number of individuals who received a proposal to revoke their eligibility for access to classified information, which means that the total number of employees affected by the revocation process is unknown. Personnel security clearances allow people access to classified information that, through unauthorised disclosure, can cause exceptionally grave damage to U.S. national security. In light of recent events, having a high-quality process to determine whether an individual''s eligibility to access classified information should be revoked has become increasingly important. DOD and DHS grant the most clearances in the executive branch, and the Director of National Intelligence is responsible for, among other things, oversight of clearance eligibility determinations. This book evaluates the extent to which the agencies track data on these processes; consistently implement government-wide requirements and exercise oversight over these processes; and determine outcomes for employees whose clearances were revoked.

Book SynopsisThe National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP) is the Nation''s over-arching strategic plan for enhancing emergency communications capabilities and interoperability nationwide. The NECP updates the original plan issued in 2008 and addresses the increasingly complex communications landscape that the public safety community uses to keep America safe and secure. The plan provides a roadmap for improving emergency communications for traditional emergency responder disciplines such as law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services, while recognising the importance of engaging non-traditional disciplines including public health, public works and transportation agencies. This book discusses the components and challenges of the National Emergency Communications Plan.

  • Department of Defense's Global Distribution

Nova Science Publishers Inc Department of Defense's Global Distribution

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTo measure the performance of its global distribution pipeline, the Department of Defense (DOD) has established three metrics: (1) logistics response time -- number of days between the time a customer submits an order and receives it, (2) customer wait time -- number of days between the time a maintenance unit, a subset of customers, submits an order and receives it, and (3) time-definite delivery -- a measure of the probability that a customer will receive an order within an established logistics response time. However, these metrics do not provide decision makers with a complete representation of performance across the entire global distribution pipeline. This book assesses the extent to which DOD has established metrics for its distribution performance; is able to accurately measure its performance against distribution standards; and has taken actions to identify causes and develop solutions for any gaps in distribution. Furthermore, the book reviews the extent to which DOD has developed and implemented corrective action plans that address challenges in the three focus areas; an effective program for monitoring and validating the effectiveness and sustainability of supply chain management corrective actions; and an ability to demonstrate supply chain management progress.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Defense Production Act (DPA) of 1950, as amended, confers upon the President a broad set of authorities to influence domestic industry in the interest of national defense. The authorities can be used across the federal government to shape the domestic industrial base so that, when called upon, it is capable of providing essential materials and goods needed for the national defense. Congress has expanded the term national defense, as defined in the DPA, so that it now includes activities related to homeland security and domestic emergency management. The scope of DPA authorities extends beyond shaping U.S. military preparedness and capabilities, as the authorities may also be used to enhance and support domestic preparedness, response, and recovery from natural hazards, terrorist attacks, and other national emergencies. This book examines some of the extensive history of the DPA, focusing primarily on its creation and most recent legislative reauthorisation. This book also discusses the foremost active authorities of the DPA; explains how those authorities may have changed as a result of the most recent reauthorisation of the law; identifies relevant delegations of the President''s DPA authorities made in Executive Order; provides a brief overview of issues Congress may wish to consider in its oversight of executive branch use of DPA authorities, as well as the implementation of changes made in the most recent reauthorisation; and discusses congressional considerations for expanding, restricting, or otherwise modifying the authorities provided by the DPA through new legislation.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSpecial Operations are military operations requiring unique modes of employment, tactical techniques, equipment, and training often conducted in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments and characterised by one or more of the following: time sensitive, clandestine, low visibility, conducted with and/or through indigenous forces, requiring regional expertise, and/or a high degree of risk. Special Operations Forces (SOF) are those active and reserve component forces of the services designated by the Secretary of Defense and specifically organised, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations. Since 2001, the Department of Defense (DOD) has increased the size and funding of SOF and emphasised SOF''s importance to meet national security needs. SOF deployments have focused on the Middle East and placed significant demand on the force during this period. This book examines trends since FY 2001 in authorised special operations military positions; the extent to which DOD has determined total funding for SOF; and the extent to which DOD has taken steps to manage the pace of SOF deployments, among other issues.

Book SynopsisSince the end of the Second World War, the role of women in the military has been evolving. Changes to laws and Department of Defense (DOD) policies have either eliminated or clarified restrictions on women serving in the military. A 2011 Military Leadership Diversity Commission reported that women comprise more than 50 percent of the recruiting pool for the officer corps. Public Law 113-291 included a provision for United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review the Armed Forces outreach and recruitment efforts directed at womens representation in the officer corps, among other things. This book evaluates the extent to which accessions of women into the officer corps have increased, and DOD and the Coast Guard have determined resources and funding to increase the accessions of women into the officer corps; and DOD and the Coast Guard have initiatives and an oversight framework to increase the recruitment and accessions of female officers.

Book SynopsisThe American people expect their Army to be trained and ready whenever called upon to achieve national objectives. In an increasingly complex world with an increasing array of diverse threats at home and abroad, Americas Army must possess a wide range of capabilities to fulfill its myriad missions. However, even as the demand for Army forces expands and diversifies, the fiscal resources necessary to meet that demand have declined and will remain challenging for several years. This tension between growing requirements and fewer resources not only creates national-level risk, it also has resulted in some unhealthy competitive tension among the Armys components, especially between the Regular Army and the Army National Guard. In large part, these factors, plus the Armys proposal, endorsed by the Department of Defense, to consolidate all Apache aircraft in the Regular Army, prompted the Congress to establish the National Commission on the Future of the Army (NCFA). This book provides a background, discusses the National Commission''s Report to the President and the Congress of the United States regarding the future of the Army.

Book SynopsisAfter receiving a bundle of worn letters written by her late grandfather George Black Jack Vowel during the First World War, journalist Jacqueline Carmichael became fascinated with the daily realities and personal stories of those who had lived through that pivotal and harrowing period in history. Reaching beyond the battlefield descriptions found in most history books, Carmichael presents unforgettable accounts filled with drama, hope, and heartbreak culled from journals and letters of Allied soldiers and nurses. From tales of men shot at dawn under charges of desertion or cowardice, to women cross-dressing to get into battle, to a Canadian Member of Parliament whose PTSD-induced death was barely acknowledged by Ottawa for nearly a century, Heard Amid the Guns reflects the human face of war. Featuring profiles of people from every Canadian province and many American states, including soldiers of Indigenous, Asian, South Asian, and African backgrounds, this book is a touching tribute illustrated throughout by WWI-era photos, postcards, documents, and the authors contemporary photos from battlefield sites and monuments.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the history of the German Army which, for the best part of two centuries, influenced the course of events in Continental Europe. It was an army that studied the conduct of war at the highest levels, planning for the destruction of its opponents during the early stages of a war. On some occasions, this principle succeeded brilliantly. On others, its details were flawed and the results were disastrous. This new and exciting publication from seasoned historian and author Bryan Perrett charts the ups and downs of the German army from the days of Frederick the Great to the dying days of World War Two. It passes through the Napoleonic period, takes in the growth of war machinery under the leadership of Clausewitz and Moltke and acquaints the reader with the various victories won against Austria in 1866 and France in 1870. It then moves forwards into the twentieth century, following the course of the Imperial German army, its successes and ultimate failure in the Great War, its recovery in the inter-war years and its final destruction under the leadership of Hitler. The book is written for the professional and the general reader alike in the easy, readable style that has ensured Bryan Perrett's international popularity as a military and naval historian.

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd The Army of Afghanistan: A Political History of a

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first full length political history of the Afghan Army, and as such is unparalleled in the range and depth of its analysis of this vitally important institution. Giustozzi locates the Army's development within the wider context of state- building in Afghanistan. His volume includes a brief survey of the period to 1953, but focuses mainly on subsequent developments, over the last four decades, as the officer corps began to be politicised and later factionalised, especially during the Russian-backed regime of the Communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), which ruled the country from 1978 to 1992. Despite the stress on the politics of praetorianism, the volume describes the Afghan Army's performance on the battlefield in detail, highlighting the potential contradiction between military effectiveness and political loyalty to the ruling elite. The volume covers developments to the end of 2013 and is the result of extensive interviews conducted with both Afghan Army officers and their advisers and mentors.Trade ReviewWill undoubtedly be the textbook on this subject. The importance of this book, however, goes far beyond its immediate subject. One of the reasons is that now, as in the past, the Afghan National Army is essential to the survival of the Afghan state. If the army collapses in the face of the Taliban, then, as in 1992 and 1929, not just the present Afghan regime but the state itself will fall and disintegrate--with no foreseeable prospect of it being put back together again. -- Anatol Lieven * New York Review of Books *America has spent 60 billion dollars building up the Afghan army. Today it is certainly big, but why is it not more capable? Giustozzi explores the troubled development of this 'fragile institution' in the context of state formation and the successive political settlements of Afghanistan's conflict-prone past. An authoritative and timely book. -- Professor Theo Farrell, Head of the Department of War StudiesOver the last decade, Antonio Giustozzi's books and articles concerning Afghanistan have established him as one of the world's leading scholars of country, its politics, and conflicts. This most recent book cements his reputation. It represents the first systematic history of a neglected topic - the Afghan Army - and Giustozzi rightly focuses his sophisticated analysis on the politics of this institution and its patrons and clients. This book is both enlightening and persuasive and deserves wide readership from students, scholars, and policymakers of Afghanistan alike. -- Thomas H. Johnson, Research Professor

Book SynopsisThe Canadian media were the first to bring Master Corporal Paul Franklin''s story to the public, and it is only fitting that award-winning journalist Liane Faulder brings the full account of his return from a war zone. The Long Walk Home: Paul Franklin''s Journey from Afghanistan documents the recovery of a soldier injured in a 2006 suicide bombing that left one Canadian diplomat dead, and two comrades in arms wounded. Although Franklin made a promise to his wife that he would come home alive, he needed the heroic help of soldiers on the scene and a medical team abroad to keep his word. He lost both of his legs above the knee as the result of his injuries, but returned home determined to walk again. Within four months of his injury, and against the odds and predictions of doctors, Franklin learned to walk on artificial legs. He continues to represent the courage of Canadian troops overseas as he rebuilds his life at home with his wife Audra and their young son, Simon. As a family on a journey to recovery, they are determined to stand, and walk, together. The Long Walk Home: Paul Franklin''s Journey from Afghanistan is a story of loss, courage, love and hope. It inspires all of those -- military and civilians alike -- who wonder how they will take that next step when tough times challenge the body and the spirit.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen public protests first began in Ukraine at the end of 2013, the failed promise of the Orange Revolution was still fresh in the minds of many Ukrainians. However, unlike in the aftermath of 2004/2005, the political and military crises ignited by the Euromaidan brought profound changes not only for Ukraine, but also for neighboring states and Europe more generally. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, along with the outbreak of fighting in the Donets Basin, has resulted in a profound shift in how domestic and regional security is perceived. More broadly, these events have also called into question the durability of the post-Cold War world order, which had been based upon peaceful coexistence between states, the integrity of sovereign borders, and an acceptance of the legitimacy of international law. While the effects of the Euromaidan have already been analyzed in terms of Ukrainian politics and relations between Ukraine, Russia, and the EU, what has not yet taken place is a sustained analysis of how its legacies have reverberated throughout the post-communist region and wider Europe (and how these altered international perceptions have, in turn, affected the subsequent course of Ukraines domestic politics). Writing from a variety of viewpoints and backgrounds, this volumes contributors seek to address these lacunae. Among other topics, they focus on Russias dissatisfaction with the post-Cold War international order, examine issues of ontological insecurity in an increasingly networked world, assess the limits of Western leverage, evaluate Ukrainian public opinion concerning NATO and the EU, consider the broader security implications of the Euromaidan for Eastern Europe, explore the role of migration and demographic factors for Ukrainian security, and assess how contentious pasts are being utilized as tools of statecraft by both Ukrainian actors and outside forces.

Book SynopsisAfter their Shreds of War: Fates from the Donbas Frontline 2015–2019, Eperjesi and Kachura uncover in this second volume effects of the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. Oleksandr managed to visit the peninsula not long after its occupation by Russian troops. While doing interviews with local people, he was threatened by the authorities yet managed to escape with his exclusive stories of teachers and students, pensioners, children and their parents, market vendors and businessmen, homeless people, health care employees and their patients, the so called "cotton wool people," and Ukrainian patriots. Many of them told him about how hopeful they were in early 2014, and how disappointed they have become as their expectations were not met by the "Russian world." This concerns the banking system of Crimea, propaganda and censorship of the Russian state, and failed tourist seasons.People still living or somehow related to Crimea tell us about the dramatic days of the illegal annexation. They explain what led to the tragedy and what mistakes were made by the Ukrainian authorities. Ordinary people, soldiers, journalists, heroes and traitors, emigrants, Crimean Tatars, Russian soldiers, Cossacks and the members of the so called "Crimean Self-Defense" disclose how they contributed to the historic events on the peninsula. Finally, the famous Crimean film director Oleh Sentsov shares with us how he managed to survive his illegal imprisonment by Russia and what impact it has had on his life.

Book SynopsisOn the banks of Tigris and Euphrates rivers famous ancient civilisations flourished. In this area, modern Iraq was created by Britain but was virtually kept in a land-locked position. Successive Iraqi rulers have staked their claims on Kuwaiti territory to be able to be free from Iranian hegemony. Soon after the 1958 revolution Qassem claimed Kuwait which led to Baghdad''s isolation but was partly repaired by the Arif brothers. The Baathist regime, since 1968, revived Iraqi claims over Kuwait. The author examines the reasons why Kuwaiti rulers were so determined in rejecting Iraqi demands. The Iranian revolution and the eight year war brought Saddam Hussein none of the gains he was expecting. The author believes that just as there is a direct link between the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war, the 1990-91 Kuwaiti crisis would not have erupted but for the same. Soon the UN sanctions began to slowly strangle Iraq. The author reasons that Saddam Hussein and his regime survived since 1991 due to his resourcefulness and his capacity for survival. Although many states began to normalise ties with Iraq, the US was determined to bring down Saddam Hussein and his Baathist regime mainly to control the Iraqi oil. By 2003, the UN sanctions had reduced Iraq from a booming nation to a shadow of its former self. These and many other crucial issues are presented in an impassioned and penetrating analysis. This book has both historical relevance and contemporary significance.

Book SynopsisChina had attracted global attention in the recent past by becoming one of the decisive actors in Asia and beyond. It is the largest country in Asia and bordering the largest number of Asian countries, with the largest population, permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council and a recognised nuclear weapon state. Its geographical position in Asia provides it with unique privileges. It borders fourteen of the other 42 countries in Asia and others by land and with several other countries in maritime dimensions. China's emergence as a third largest economy in the world after the United States and Japan in 2008 is providing opportunities as well as challenges. Hence, its political/border interactions with these nearly half of the Asian states are crucial in explaining inter-state dynamics in the region. China's formulation of policies, their execution and implementation would be crucial for a number of states in Asia. The neighbouring countries' responses to these policies would also be crucial for China as well in evaluating the successes or failures of its adjustment with the neighbourhood. This book provides valuable insights on these issues, not only from India's point of view, but also from the point of view of Japan. The research and analysis has been assembled by renowned scholars from both countries and is of value to the academics, specialists, policy analysts, think tanks and all interested in studying the geo-strategic significance of China today.

Book SynopsisThis book was complied as a gift of motivation for you. Keep it on your desk so that you can refer to it often. The collected quotations, sayings, aphorisms, maxims, and epigrams contained within these pages have been specifically selected for their value to the military professional. This book tells you a lot about the military profession, and about what it means to be a leader in the military. It is an anthology from people who have understood that very well and written about it over the ages. Included within its pages are passages that are thousands of years old, extolling the eternal truths of soldiering, and some from people who are living today. There is much in it that is helpful and inspiring, and probably some things with which you will disagree as well. Reading it will cause passages and phrases to echo in your mind and create a resonance that has been a talisman for many in the profession of arms. The quotes show up one unalterable verity of the military profession. Many of the problems faced by military men centuries ago are exactly the same as those faced by soldiers, sailors and airmen today. The Quotes cover a great variety ranging from leadership to behavior on the battlefield, or directly related to sustaining forces in battle. They reflect the complex world of the military profession. Like their predecessors military commanders of today require physical courage, but just as important, and much more difficult, is moral courage. The Quotes includes examples of individuals who placed their careers on the line in defence of a greater principle, but there are just as many examples of individuals who failed the test. Indeed, examples of what not to do are sometimes the more important.
