AKEMAN PRESS On Foot in Bath
Book Synopsis''Bath is not only one of the best cities in the world to explore on foot; it is also surrounded on all sides by unspoilt countryside whose beauty is matched by its variety.'' This new edition of the best-selling walking guide to the city does full justice to that unique inheritance. As well as featuring its main attractions, it leads the reader to hidden corners and panoramic views over Bath and beyond. As well as tracing some of Jane Austen''s expeditions around the city, it also looks at the rigours of eighteenth-century social life, the architecture of John Wood and his successors, the city''s industrial heritage and the story of how window tax affected the design of its buildings. Finally, a postscript looks at the transformation of the city since the opening of Thermae Bath Spa in 2006. This new edition has not only been fully revised and updated; the opportunity has also been taken to improve some of the walks. Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge Map and Guide
Book SynopsisAll hiking challenges are personal, yourself against the required completion time. A successful Challenge is a personal triumph. With its easy access, and ten hours target time, the Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge can be completed in a single (long) day if you are within commuting distance of Dorking. The Surrey Hills is an 'Area of Outstanding National Beauty'. It is difficult to think of anywhere more picturesque in which to undertake a walking Challenge. With all this natural beauty to hand do not forget that this is a Challenge, requiring a good level of fitness, good navigation, suitable clothing and footwear, along with refreshments and water to consume during our Challenge adventure. If you are new to Challenge walks you might consider our Rutland Water Challenge a first step in your long distance walking before tackling the Surrey 3 Peaks. Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge Map and Guide is a 25k scale OSlike map with the Challenge route specially highlighted. We licence OS 50k scale mapping which is then doubled in size to produce an OSlike 25k map but the features, text and logos are now doubled in size making them much easier to read under Challenge conditions. Our preferred Challenge Route, and two slightly different alternatives, are added and specially highlighted so that our route stands out against the OSlike 25k map. Gps track and waypoints for the three routes are available to download as gpx files in a zip file. The 50 waypoints of our Challenge route are highlighted on the map. These gpx files can be used with all gps phone apps and gps units. A digital Custom Map edition of our Surrey 3 Peaks map is available as a free download for use by Garmin users. On the reverse of the map sheet is our Locator Map using OS Opendata showing the location of, and access to, Surrey 3 Peaks relative to a wide area of southern England. The result is a double sided 600mm by 600mm map design. We then print the map design on a 100 micron plastic substrate using a special UV curing inks process on the UK's only press capable of using this latest technology. The result is a lightweight map that is both waterproof and tearproof, and fully recyclable, that will survive anything your Surrey 3 Peaks Challenge can throw at it and afterwards will fold up like new.

Troubador Publishing Walks on Dartmoor: Paths and Trackways
Twenty eight walks varying in length from 2 to 7 1/2 miles. Photographs illustrate many of the features to be seen on the walks. Using over sixty years of knowledge of Dartmoor, Michael Caton leads you on a series of 28 walks based on paths and trackways over the moor. Some of these walks are based on those led by the author for the Dartmoor Preservation Association. Many of the walks have not been described in previous guidebooks or are not shown on the OS 1:25,000 map. The walks are for those who wish to venture well into the open moor without having to negotiate the rough Dartmoor terrain. A section has been included on the origin and history of the tracks including special comment on the route of the well known Abbot’s Way. There is also a section describing briefly what to see on the walks, including prehistoric monuments, medieval and later remains such as mining and granite crosses, as well as flora and fauna. The walks have been arranged in order around the southern and then the northern moor. Each walk starts at a suitable parking place. The routes are described in detail with appropriate grid references and brief information on the scenery and features to be seen. The start of all the walks is shown on an overview map of Dartmoor. About half of the routes are circular whereas others are more suited to a linear course. The walk descriptions are accompanied by maps in which the route has been sketched out on the appropriate section of the 1:25,000 OS map. A separate section gives advice to walkers and explains how to use this guide. It also draws attention to safety issues of walking on Dartmoor, including the dangers of military firing and adverse weather conditions.

Whittles Publishing Three Men on the Way Way: A Story of Walking the
Book SynopsisThe West Highland Way is Scotland's first official Long Distance Route and runs near 100 miles from Milngavie to Fort William. It was nicknamed the 'Way Way' by a trio from Fife who set off to walk it in the year of the Millennium. This is not a guidebook but an account of their experiences, the highs and lows which any challenge presents of their marvellous, surprising, amusing and weird memories. They met many hundreds of people along the way but, naturally, those they recall were the more eccentric. Although the trio never managed another bigger trip together they realize how lucky, and wise, they had been to grab the chance when it came. There is remarkably pleasant rural walking at the start to reach the Highlands at Loch Lomond, fine woodland on its banks and later, the contrast of lonely, empty miles across Rannoch Moor, the Devil's Staircase and the great pass of the Lairig Mor to finish. Encounters with other people are an important part of Long Distance Routes. Anyone who has walked the Way Way (or is planning to do so) will enjoy this story, bringing back plenty of similar memories of people and places, adventures and misadventures. The illustrations too give a wonderful idea of the rich variety of country traversed and well capture the atmosphere of this walk through Scotland's fine landscapes.Trade Review'Many books have been written about the West Highland Way. Few are joyous, or enjoyable, as this one. ... Our three protagonists are clearly fitter and more experienced than many who walk the West Highland Way, but their hillwalking background tends to make them fairly relaxed about detailed route planning, and as interested in diversions to mountain tops and (especially) pubs as in the precise line of the walk itself.Combine this with the fascinating interplay of three very different characters and the sometimes weird and often wonderful people they encounter, and the result is by turns whimsical, amusing and thought provoking. ... The result is a book which engages you at the beginning, and keeps you engaged and amused all the way through.' Undiscovered Scotland 'This is not to be missed if you're planning your own adventure down this legendary trail.' The Great Outdoors '... you will enjoy this gentle tale of the Physician, the Blacksmith and the Museum Curator. ... The book is greatly enhanced by the historical snippets slipped in by Hamish Brown and by the short, but informative appendices on Wade and Caulfeild, and the 1889 Rannoch Moor fiasco. ...will prove a welcome and informative companion on the Way Way'. Loose Scree 'A livelt account of three friends, the people they meet, and most importantly an adventure shared. There are plenty of interesting snippets of historical detail about the route too... ...if you've already walked the "Way Way", hopefully Hamish's tale will bring back some happy memories'. Scotways ...Hamish Brown, has added another volume to his considerable contribution to Scottish outdoor literature with his light-hearted...account of a walk along the West Highland Way... ...many who have walked the Way, or might be contemplating the journey, will find it fun and... quite imformative'. Cothrom '...the entertaining tale of three friends' incredible journey walking the West Highland Way in Scotland... ...a detailed account of the highs, lows and challenges the trio faced, looking back on their encounters, amusing memories and the rich variety of landscapes they crossed'. LandLove '...the book does give an interesting, and at times amusing, account of walking the West Highland Way. It should appeal to those who have already undertaken this challenging journey as well as anyone considering doing it in the future'. Scottish Home and Country
