  • Trekking the Giants' Trail: Alta Via 1 through

Cicerone Press Trekking the Giants' Trail: Alta Via 1 through

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisItaly's Alta Via 1, a 180km trail through the Italian Alps following the northern flank of the Aosta Valley, boasts magnificent views of the Alpine giants: Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Grand Combin and Monte Rosa. Indeed, it is sometimes known as the Giants' Trail and can be combined with a sister-route, the Alta Via 2 (covered in a separate Cicerone guide), which runs along the southern flank of the valley, to form the Tor des Géants. Stretching from Donnas to Courmayeur, the Alta Via 1 offers fantastic alpine walking, with welcoming refuges and small hotels providing overnight accommodation (and great food) along the way. The guide presents the route in two sections, for the advantage of those who can't spare the full fortnight-plus needed to walk the entire AV1. The trail is described in 16 stages, with alternative stages covering some popular variants, including an optional detour to visit the famed monastery at the Great St Bernard Pass. Each stage includes clear route description and mapping, plus notes on local points of interest and accommodation options. An alternative itinerary, list of useful contacts, kitlist and glossary can be found in the appendices. The AV1 crosses cols of nearly 3000m as it traverses the side-valleys of the main Aosta Valley. Suited to those with some experience of alpine trekking, the walking is demanding but without technical difficulty. And the rewards are many: quieter huts, breathtaking vistas and a chance to immerse yourself in fabulous mountain landscapes overlooked by soaring, snow-clad giants.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Route summary table Introduction The route Geography Geology History Art and culture Wildlife Plants and flowers Weather When to go Access and travel In-route transport options Accommodation Mountain huts Clothing Food and drink Language Maps and navigation Waymarking Safety and emergencies Insurance Using this guide The Alta Via 1: An Italian Haute Route Eastern section Stage 1 Donnas to Sassa (Etoile du Berger) Stage 2 Sassa (Etoile du Berger) to Rifugio Coda Stage 2A The Col Portola Route: Sassa (Etoile du Berger) to Rifugio Coda Stage 3 Rifugio Coda to Rifugio Barma Stage 4 Rifugio Barma to Niel (La Gruba) Stage 5 Niel (La Gruba) to Gressoney-Saint-Jean Stage 3A Rifugio Coda to Rifugio della Vecchia Stage 4A Rifugio della Vecchia to Rifugio Rivetti Stage 5A Rifugio Rivetti to Gressoney-Saint-Jean Stage 6 Gressoney-Saint-Jean to Rifugio Vieux Crest Stage 7 Rifugio Vieux Crest to Rifugio Grand Tournalin Stage 8 Rifugio Grand Tournalin to Cretaz, Valtournenche Western section Stage 9 Cretaz, Valtournenche to Rifugio Barmasse Stage 10 Rifugio Barmasse to Rifugio Cun#xe9;y Stage 11 Rifugio Cun#xe9;y to Clos#xe9;/Oyace/Lexert Stage 12 Clos#xe9;/Oyace/Lexert to Ollomont/Rey Stage 12A Clos#xe9;/Oyace/Lexert to Ollomont/Rey: the low route Stage 13 Ollomont/Rey to Rifugio Champillon Stage 14 Rifugio Champillon to Saint-Rh#xe9;my-en-Bosses Stage 15 Saint-Rh#xe9;my-en-Bosses to Rifugio Bonatti Stage 15A Via Francigena from Saint-Rh#xe9;my-en-Bosses to Great St Bernard Monastery Stage 15B Great St Bernard Monastery to Rifugio Bonatti Stage 16 Rifugio Bonatti to Courmayeur Appendix A Alternative schedule Appendix B Useful contacts Appendix C Useful phrases Appendix D Kit list

  • Walk! the Lake District South

Discovery Walking Guides Ltd Walk! the Lake District South

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Lake District is to leisure walking what Vienna is to the waltz, Venice to canalization, Bletchley to code-breaking, Chicago to the blues, and Dublin to the brewing of porter. None of these places invented the related pursuit, but in each the activity was honed to a fine art. With superb lakes carved into spectacularly sculpted valleys, long rugged ridges blessed with imposing panoramas, jagged crags dangling from grand peaks, sweeping dales cradling remote hamlets, and barren fells tonsured with arcane henges and ancient ruins, the Lake District has everything the dedicated wilderness seeker could desire. All 37 walking routes include: walking route summary, ratings for Effort Time Distance Ascents/Descents Refreshments and Vertigo risk, fully detailed walk description including frequent timings to aid navigation and check your progress, GPS waypoints at every key point on every route, full colour 1:40,000 scale Ordnance Survey licenced mapping for each route, short walk and stroll alternatives Synopsis Including GPS Waypoint lists and a Place Name Index, this 160-page colour book contains walking routes within the Lake District South region. Wire-O spiral binding allows it to lay flat and be folded back on itself without damage. It features: route summary of exertion rating; refreshments rating; time, distance, ascents/descents; and more.Trade ReviewNew Perspective on an Old Friend, 10 Jan 2006 The Lake District is such well known walking country that it must be difficult to find something new to write about it. Charles Davis has accomplished this in confident style, covering the southern Lake District from Wast Water in the west to Haweswater in the east. His selection of classic high level summit ascents and ridge walks is well chosen and includes some old friends of mine - the best of south Lake District high level fell walking. But he also has an eye for walks over quieter, lower fells and through Lakeland's beautiful wooded valleys such as Dunnerdale. In rushing to the high summits I have often neglected these, I suspect like many others, and this guide will be an indispensable companion for future exploration. I am impressed with the new Discovery Walking Guides series, brightly presented in a modern style and including innovations such as colour printing and photography (some excellent photographs in this book), new Right to Roam OS mapping and GPS navigation information. They are easy to use on the fells, fitting conveniently into a rucksack or trouser pocket or map case. Bo Reda - Wales Walk! The Lake District South - something new at last, 23 Jan 2006 I have a shelf full of Lake District books but so many of them seem to have the same old routes, desribed in uninspiring terms, that I don't feel the urge to use them. Walk! The Lake District South is fresh, and although it covers some old favourites, there are plenty of new ideas for routes.I love the style of the author - he informs yet entertains at the same time. You just want to get out there! I have done 3 routes so far and intend to do the lot. The maps are adapted from OS so are good and clear, overlaid with GPS tracks and waypoints - most reassuring. I would heartily recommend this book to all lovers of the Lake District.

It is often said that Glasgow is one of the easiest cities to get away from and the Campsies and the Kilpatrick Hills, a few short miles north of the city, are the first port of call. This guide covers all of the major hills within both ranges, as well as low-level walks around and between the villages which lie on their perimeters. Many of these 40 walks make use of both the West Highland Way and the John Muir Way which cut through the heart of this area.

Book SynopsisThe twentieth anniversary of the Countryside & Rights of Way (CRoW) Act in 2020 provides a good opportunity to look back on the doughty band of campaigners who fought for so long to give ramblers their cherished right to roam. This century-old battle brought to the fore a number of larger-than-life characters who were prepared to go to extreme lengths--in some cases even imprisonment--to reclaim the right of access which were taken from the people by the hated Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This book describes the life and work of twenty of these "wilderness warriors", retelling the battles they fought against seemingly intractable politicians and the Establishment and includes memories of personal encounters by the author with many of them. From the nature-loving romantic poet John Clare and access pioneers such as Tom Stephenson and Benny Rothman, to present-day activists and writers such as Jim Perrin, Fiona Reynolds and Kate Ashbrook, Walking Class Heroes describes the contributions made by philanthropists, writers and political militants. Their battlegrounds included the Peak District, Dartmoor and Scotland and their tactics encompassed campaigning journalism, legal dexterity and even mass trespass. Some are no longer with us of course, but several others are continuing the fight for the same kind of public access to the countryside currently enjoyed by our neighbours in Scotland and the rest of Europe. Roly Smith was recently described by a reviewer as "one of Britain's most knowledgeable countryside writers". He has written over ninety books on the British countryside and is vice-president of the Outdoor Writers' and Photographers' Guild, having been its president for twelve years, and is also a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. A journalist by training, Roly was Head of Information Services for the Peak District National Park for thirteen years, where he became known as "Mr Peak District".
