    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom Great Yarmouth to Aberystwyth, Westering is a coast-to-coast journey crossing the Fens, Leicester, the Black Country and central Wales. It connects landscape, place and memory to evoke a narrative unravelling the deep topography, and following a westerly route that runs against the grain of the land, its geology, culture and historical bedrock. With the industrial Midlands sandwiched between bucolic landscapes in East Anglia and Wales, here we explore places too often overlooked. Along the way we encounter deserted medieval villages, battlefield sites, the ghosts of Roman soldiers, valleys drowned for reservoirs, ancient forests, John Clare's beloved fields, and the urban edgelands. Notions of home and belonging, landscapes of loss and absence, birds and the resilience of nature, the psychology of walking, and the psychogeography of liminal places all frame the story.Trade Review"Westering is a beautifully compelling reminder that we never walk alone. Alongside us, always, are the complex cultural and natural histories, topographies, geologies and folk memories that have helped shape the path and those places we pass. Laurence Mitchell is a superb and illuminating guide to the rich seam of stories found underfoot." Triarchy Press Walking Bodies: Papers, Provocations, Actions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe experience and variety of walking practices have never been so broad, relevant or unpredictable. Walking Bodies charts some of their very latest developments. Editors Helen Billinghurst, Claire Hind and Phil Smith put out a call for artists, activists, academics, radical walkers and psychogeographers to discuss, perform and share their experiences of current walking cultures. In these essays, provocations, artworks and documentations, new terrains emerge and diverse energies and thinkings reflect the huge response to the initial call and the demand for tickets to the conference. 'Walking Bodies' evidences anxieties, exclusions and gradual but major changes of direction for walking arts, towards more considered and embodied practices that re-navigate their terrains and challenge assumptions about trajectories through the unhuman world. Book SynopsisSooner or later, most of us get stuck. Feel stuck. Our creativity in crisis... lost, blocked, overwhelmed by work, family, illness. How to find or recover that creative edge? How to get unstuck? For the authors, it began with cancer and stretched into the pandemic. One primarily a writer and the other a painter, they decide to walk together, to talk, write, feed back, reflect and repeat, again and again. They explore trust, openness, motherhood, their willingness to take risks and be exposed, and the particular insights they bring as women. Along the way, they walk and map their way back to creative life. This is their story, but more than that - it's a map for anyone who is feeling stuck. Whether or not you have had a creative practice before (writing/painting/making/crafting), this book will help you find your way into creative expression. The authors offer creative tasks and suggestions in each chapter, and ideas and structures to get you going. Rucksack Readers Friends Way 1: George Fox's journey

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Friends Way is a grand walk that starts in Barley, Lancashire, passing over the summit of Pendle Hill to and through some of the finest parts of the Yorkshire Dales to end at Sedbergh. It combines glorious scenery with superb wildlife and striking geology, and it also visits many places that were crucial in George Fox’s journey of 1652. He preferred to deliver his sermons outdoors, dismissing churches as ‘steeple-houses’. His long walk and discussions with Seekers and other dissidents were the catalyst for the creation of the Society of Friends, first known as Quakers. From Pendle Hill, where Fox had his vision, to Fox’s Pulpit, where he gave his ‘Sermon on the Fell’ to a crowd of over 1000, the route is steeped in Fox’s personal journey. This 62-mile Way ends at Sedbergh, a town rich in Quaker heritage, to be followed by two day-walks, one a circuit that takes in Fox’s Pulpit. The whole route can be completed comfortably inside one week. It will appeal not only to all Quakers who enjoy walking, but also to those walkers who don’t yet know the remarkable story of Fox’s 1652 journey and life. The guidebook is richly visual, with mapping at 1:35,000 on 17 of its pages and nearly 140 colour photos. It is robustly bound and printed on rainproof paper.

Book SynopsisThe Friends Way route will appeal not only to all Quakers who enjoy walking, but also to those walkers who don’t yet know about Margaret Fell's remarkable story. This volume, a sequel to Friends Way 2, continues the route from Sedbergh to Swarthmoor Hall near Ulverston. After George Fox reached Swarthmoor Hall, he deeply impressed Margaret Fell (1614-1702) with his radical ideas. She later became a committed Quaker who was imprisoned for her beliefs, and also his wife. She worked tirelessly to organise the movement, to lobby for releasing prisoners of conscience and to spread the Quaker word by publishing letters. This book covers her journey from mistress of Swarthmoor to mother of Quakerism, as well as devoting a section to Swarthmoor Hall which was and is the most important centre of Quakerism in northern England. The route takes in major Quaker sites in Sedbergh and Kendal en route to Swarthmoor Hall, and it can comfortably be completed inside one week.

  • Annandale Way (2 ed)

Rucksack Readers Annandale Way (2 ed)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Annandale Way is a charming long walk in a little-known, but very accessible, part of southern Scotland. Walked southward from source to the sea, it starts in the sheep town of Moffat, and runs for 56 miles (90 km) via Lochmaben, with superb views from the top of Almagill Hill. A slightly shorter branch of the route goes via Lockerbie and Eskrigg Nature Reserve. The two branches rejoin north of Annan to reach the Solway Firth at Newbiebarns. The second edition contains several important route updates, four extra pages and many fresh photos, yet it is 20 grams lighter and more pocketable than the first. This guidebook contains everything you need to plan and enjoy your trip: detailed route description for walking from north to south concise instructions for those wishing to walk south to north summary of each section showing distance, terrain and food/drink stops background on the history and economy of Annandale seven pages of habitats and wildlife with superb images planning information for transport and accommodation nine pages of detailed mapping of the route at 1:44,000 lavishly illustrated, with over 110 colour photos rucksack-friendly format, printed on rainproof paper. Trade ReviewThe first third or so of the book comprises beautifully illustrated introductory sections in full colour about the walk itself, covering topics such as access, waymarking, accommodation and packing. There are then sections on farming, forestry and energy; on history; and on habitats and wildlife. Most of the rest of the guide breaks the Annandale Way into a series of route sections, and for each gives detailed route instructions, nice photographs, and excellent full-page maps. The result is everything you could possibly need in one handily-sized guide that fits perfectly, as the name suggests, into your rucksack. This is an essential book for anyone considering walking the Annandale Way: or for anyone who fancies tackling a walk that not all of their friends will already have done. -- Undiscovered ScotlandThe route descriptions are detailed, allowing the walker to follow turn-by-turn instructions, and are accompanied by copious photographs, mostly by Lynne Kirton, and clear maps at a scale of 1:44,000, a number you won’t find on your compass romer but presumably chosen to fit the book’s format … There are descriptions for the two alternatives where the route splits, with options to follow the way via Lochmaben or Lockerbie, and there are also brief extra route notes for anyone wanting to follow the Annandale Way south to north. The Annandale Way would make an ideal first route for a novice long-distance, multi-day walker. The countryside and terrain are not too taxing but are varied enough to sustain interest. The Annan isn’t a particularly long river, and there’s satisfaction to be had in following its full length from source to sea. Turnbull and Megarry’s guidebook is comprehensive and easy to use, with its ringbound format making it convenient for on-the-route reference and its size and use of rainproof paper helpful for slotting into the walker’s rucksack for guidance along the way. -- Bob Smith * Editor, Grough magazine *This guide has everything you need to walk the Annandale Way … With seven pages of maps along with information about wildlife, transport links, accommodation, food and drink stops, all in a rucksack-friendly format, it’s guaranteed to hold up on even the dreichest of days. -- Scottish Field

The places celebrated, from which these writings have drawn their inspiration, are on the North Downs Way path which forms an imperfect circle made up of two arcs. One meanders southeast through the Folkestone Downs along the coast to the White Cliffs of Dover. The other runs northeast through Canterbury. Yet this outer map corresponds to an inner one, a ‘mandala’, the perfect imaginative symbol of wholeness: as if tracks walked make patterns in our minds, words of wonder triggered by nature forging relationship between us and the land. This black and white edition of ‘Ring of Downs’ is the author’s sequel to ‘A Dog on the Downs’, to be followed by ‘Flights of Nature’ and ‘Light of Land’.Table of ContentsWalking 17 INTRODUCTION 19 THE STRAIGHT PATH 25 Journey’s beginning 26 Lenham 27 Lenham lambs unafraid 27 Holloway 28 Westwell to Eastwell 30 THE SOUTH EASTERN ARC 33 Wye 34 Why? 34 Jacob’s ladder 34 Brabourne 35 Long Wood December 35 Brabourne Downs 38 Stowting 41 The Tiger 41 Postling 42 Sun games 43 Lower Postling 45 Postling and the lost camera 48 Postling, the lost camera, Conrad and The Heart of Darkness 52 Tolsford Hill and scarps 58 Showerless at Tolsford 58 Weather 61 Summerhouse Hill 64 Etchinghill Escarpment 65 Existential Etchinghill 65 Etchinghill summit 69 Etchinghill escape 70 Arpinge Escarpment 72 From Holywell to Arpinge heights 72 Nodding to the numinous 74 Dog’s tree 76 Mandala me 77 Arpinge base: unhinged Arpinge 79 Seabrook stream’s spring 82 Fog 83 Folkestone Downs 85 Peene Quarry 86 Keen for Peene in November 86 Cheriton Down 88 Balancing 88 Castle Hill 90 Sugar Loaf Hill 91 Sugar Loaf Hill and King Arthur 92 Blip on landscape 94 Holywell 95 Wingate Hill 96 Creteway Down, Dover Hill 97 The Warren 99 The Apron 101 Edge place 101 No broken hearts 102 Why does the Warren water move? 104 Trouble over 104 Tempest 105 Washed and weathered 107 Slithering pool 108 Sea saw sea 110 Dog days 111 Dog slant 112 Sure line 114 Sea snippets 115 Pinch and rise 116 Portal 117 Seafront son 119 Storm blasted 120 One evening 121 Harbour arm 123 Goodbye ball 124 Dover 126 Roll over to Dover 126 Beyond Dover; Kingsdown Beach 127 THE NORTH EASTERN ARC 129 Boughton Aluph 130 Splitting point 130 A round becomes whole 130 The West is the best 131 King’s Wood 133 Reclining body 133 Toward Canterbury 135 Julieberrie 135 Bigbury Iron Age hillfort 135 The Stour Valley, West Canterbury 137 ELA VALLEYS 141 Elham Valley 142 Court at Denton, Elham East 142 Barham Down 143 Lydden Valley 145 Grass dunes on down Downs 145 Grass dunes 147 Cloud down 149 Dunes and desert, searingly hot 151 Man 152 Rainbow towards Lydden 154 Alkham Valley 155 An Alkham April 155 St Radigund’s Abbey 156 St Radigund’s continued 159 Church Hougham 162 Unicorns 162 West Hougham: huffing out 162 New paths 163 Farthing Common and West Wood 164 Our Father Who Art in Nature 164 Bluebell Woods 166 Pillars Woods, April 2017 166 March 2018 167 From Long Wood, near Brabourne 168 THE SAXON SHORELINE 171 Edge place I 172 Edge place II 173 Rough Roughs 175 Through the zoo 177 Ghosts 179 Un-straight-jacketed 180 CONCLUSION 183 BIBLIOGRAPHY 185

Book SynopsisFollowing the success of the earlier Scatalog - Quick ID guide to southern African animal droppings, here's another quick and quirky identification guide, this time to tracks of the region's most commonly found mammals, but also includes tracks of reptiles, rodents, birds and insects. A simple key on the inside front cover directs users to any of 11 categories, such as 'cloven hooves', 'paws' or 'tramline-like trails'. Nearly 100 animals or closely related groups of animals are depicted; for each, there's a silhouette of front and back feet and a colour photograph of the track, the average measurements for each track, a short description of the track, information about the circumstances and likely habitat. And as authors Christopher and Elizabeth Barile illustrate, some of these hikes can be a family affair, even with small children.”–Dennis Goza, L’Eau Theque Productions "Routes of the hikes with precise information about levels of difficulty, elevation gain, trail heads, and so forth, are clearly illustrated. The Bariles catalogue the area’s various ecosystems from high desert to montane forests, its huge variety of flora, fauna and geology, and the human history of the ranchers, miners, and indigenous peoples who live there. And they have done so in a guide that is crisp and cleanly organized, written in highly readable language such that the book is a pleasure to browse." –Michael Vella, Professor Emeritus American Literature, Indiana University of Pennsylvania "What a fun and information-packed hiking guide! It made us want to go out and try all these intriguing hikes, just minutes from Reno. The guide’s great variety of hikes and trails will please all hikers, from toddlers to grannies and everyone in-between. We greatly appreciated the clear directions to trailheads and admired the beautiful photographs which displayed the beauty of this region."—Rose Strickland, author of How Not to be Cowed - Livestock Grazing on the Public Lands: An Owner's Manual and a member of the Public Lands Committee of the Sierra Club "If like me, you don’t live in the Reno area but are planning a visit, Base Camp Reno: 101 Hikes from Sage to Snow is a must-have resource. The photos are absolutely enticing. Each hike is described with all the information you will need to choose one suited to you and safely get you there and back. There are easy hikes, hikes with great views, hikes in both mountain and desert, hikes shaded or by water, epic or super challenging hikes and all within 35 miles of Reno. —Jaimie Bruzenak, author of Retire to an RV: The Roadtrip to Affordable Retirement, “Every hike resonates with the authors’ passion for and knowledge of the region, every page carries vivid descriptions that transport the reader into their world. The authors are particularly good on flora. At Mount Lola, look out for “crimson columbines, red paintbrushes, pink shooting starts, orange lilies, yellow monkeyflowers, blue larkspurs, lavender asters and purple lupines.” On Brown’s Creek on Slide Mountain, they invite you to scratch and smell the inner bark and twigs of the Jeffrey pine to enjoy its “delightful citrusy-vanilla odor... Alongside the geography and flora and fauna, the book also touches upon areas such as history, geology, and Native American culture, all contributing to the vivid picture that the Bariles paint of a region they know like the back of each other’s hands.”—Peter Thody, RoadTrip America "As an avid hiker of multiple trails the Sierra and throughout the Washoe and Carson Valleys, I was inspired and impressed by Elizabeth and Christopher Barile’s book Base Camp Reno: 101 Hikes From Sage to Snow. Their thorough overview of the history, geology, topography, weather, flora, and fauna was a perfect snapshot of the uniquely extreme variety the Reno area has to offer. Each hike has a detailed description that gives the reader enough information to successfully plan and locate it in an easy-to-read and organized fashion. This book is for both the experienced hiker and those looking to go on their first foray onto a trail. I look forward to checking each hike off the list myself! This book is a must-have for any local Reno hikers or someone coming to the area who wants to hit the trail."--Dawn Swinney, dawnswinney.com “As an avid urban and trail hiker, I was blown away by the level of care and loving detail offered in Base Camp Reno. Christopher and Elizabeth Barile have created a lush manuscript which will be valued by novice hikers and seasoned pros!”—Harry Fagel, author of Street Talk and Undercover
