Cambridge University Press Witch Hunts
Book SynopsisWitch hunts are the result of gendered, cultural and socioeconomic struggles over acute structural, economic and social transformations in both the formation of gendered class societies and that of patriarchal capitalism. This book combines political economy with gender and cultural analysis to explain the articulation of cultural beliefs about women as causing harm, and struggles over patriarchy in periods of structural economic transformation. It brings in field data from India and South-East Asia and incorporates a large body of works on witch hunts across geographies and histories. Witch Hunts is a scholarly analysis of the human rights violation of women and its correction through changes in beliefs, knowledge practices and adaptation in structural transformation.Trade Review'It is interesting, important and well grounded in both older and newer approaches to witchcraft. The general argument about witchcraft, gender, patriarchy and structural changes in the economy is also quite persuasive, though I am sure there will be quibbles. From my point of view, the book looks both original and important.' Arjun Appadurai, New York University'Very impressive! The authors manage to cover a lot of ground. Am really impressed by the wide scope of the book, both because of all the areas and themes covered and because of the authors' wide reading! So many literature references and ideas … I think the focus on witch-hunts is original and productive.' Peter Geschiere, University of Amsterdam and author of Witchcraft'Witch Hunts provides an illuminating exploration of how beliefs in witches function to explain misfortunes, virtually always in the context of significant economic and social transformations. Such processes are routinely gendered, transferring land and social power usually from women to men, and thus creating or strengthening patriarchies. Innovative is that the authors take the standpoint of the victims of witch hunts in accounting for such practices and beliefs. Decades of field work in India, and archival resources from primarily Africa and early modern Europe, provide the solid evidential basis for analyses of similarities and differences between witch hunts across geographies and histories. Clearly written and well-organized, this will make fascinating reading for courses in history, economics, anthropology and women's studies.' Sandra Harding, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of California at Los Angeles'A fascinating account, in horrifying detail, of the under-side of community and family life. We see patriarchy at its worst in this book which is an expert analysis of the socio-economic reasons for the treatment of women as witches, but with rays of hope on societal mechanisms which prevent or punish perpetrators. Highly recommended as it is both moving and knowledgeable.' Renana Jhabvala, Chairperson, SEWA Bharat (All India SEWA), Member, UN Secretary General's High Level Panel on Women's Economic Empowerment in 2016–2017; Chairperson, WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing)'... excellent analysis and new insights of critical importance to policymakers in Africa on a human rights issue affecting women and the elderly in Africa.' Sheila Oparaocha, ENERGIA International'Based on field work data on India and drawing on voluminous body of works on witchcraft and witch hunt across geography and history beyond continents and across disciplines and perspectives, Govind Kelkar and Dev Nathan lay bare general principles that produce, reinforce and weaken witch hunts in societies. This they do by brilliant engagement with three critical factors of witchcraft belief, gender struggle and socio-economic transformation by combining the lens of political economy with cultural analysis. Large in canvas, comparative in perspective and refreshing in analysis, the book will enrich anyone interested in issues of gender, witch hunts, socio-economic transformation, political economy and indigenous peoples.' Cambridge University Press Keeping the Peace
Book SynopsisIn times of extreme violence, what explains peace in some places? This book investigates geographic variation in Hindu-Muslim violence in Gujarat in 2002, an event witnessed closely by the author. It compares peaceful and violent towns, villages, and neighbourhoods to study how political violence spreads. A combination of statistical and ethnographic methods unpack the mechanisms of crowd behaviour, intergroup relations, and political incentives. Macro-level risk factors that led to the violence are analysed to provide a close understanding of the behaviour of people who participated in the violence, were targeted by it and, often, compelled to carry on living alongside their perpetrators. Findings systematically demonstrate the implicit political logic of the violence. Most of all, by moving up close to the people caught in the middle of violence; findings highlight the interplay between politics, the spatial environment, and the cognitive decision-making processes of individuals.Table of ContentsList of tables; List of images; List of figures; Preface; Acknowledgements; 1. Cambridge University Press A Renaissance of Violence
Book SynopsisBased on a close examination of more than 700 homicide trials, A Renaissance of Violence exposes the deep social instability at the core of the early modern states of North Italy. Following a series of crises in the early seventeenth century, interpersonal violence in the region grew to frightening levels, despite the efforts of courts and governments to reduce social conflict. In this detailed study of violence in early modern Europe, Colin Rose shows how major crises, such as the plague of 1630, reduced the strength of social bonds among both elite and ordinary Italians. As a result, incidents of homicidal violence exploded - in small rural communities, in the crowded urban center and within tightly-knit families. Combining statistical analysis and close reading of homicide patterns, Rose demonstrates how the social contexts of violence, as much as the growth of state power, can contribute to explaining how and why interpersonal violence grew so rapidly in North Italy in the seventeeTrade Review'Deftly melding new quantitative data with rich qualitative materials, this book adds a little explored 'southern' dimension to debates about how violence declined in modernizing European societies. Alert to the political, institutional, social, and gendered particularities of early modern Bologna, Rose smartly challenges the optimistic hypothesis that homicide readily succumbed to the progress of 'civilization'.' Elizabeth S. Cohen, York University, Toronto'In this in-depth analysis of homicide cases that followed the catastrophic plague and misery of 1630, Rose unravels the cultural and political fabric of an intractable Bolognese nobility, shedding important light on how local elites resisted the centralizing and pacifying attempts of an early modern state.' Joanne M. Ferraro, San Diego State University and author of Venice: History of the Floating City'With archival precision and narrative skill, Rose reveals a society in crisis and those who make killing a strategy for living. Plague, famine, and violence unravel an ineffective and illegitimate government, and trigger civil war as the Bolognese seek their own solutions with knives and guns.' Nicholas Terpstra, University of Toronto'Colin Rose's compelling analysis of seventeenth-century Bologna shows how easily a peaceful society can degenerate into a society of murderers. This marvellous book erodes the notion that modern Western societies are on a trajectory toward ever less personal violence.' Edward Muir, Northwestern University, Illinois'… a riveting contribution to the historiography on interpersonal violence in the early modern world… This book is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in the history Italy, violence and peace-making, and the relationship between people and criminal courts in the early modern world.' Sanne Muurling, Crime, History & Societies'… an excellent orientation for those beginning the study of interpersonal violence … specialists will appreciate this decisive contribution to the debate on the decline of violence. Rose shows how civilization and violence, far from being mutually exclusive, work together.' Umberto Cecchinato, Annali Recensioni Online'… contributes to a broader understanding of the role violence played in ancien-regime European society.' Yaakov Andrea Lattes, H-net'… Renaissance of Violence is not only an excellent study of homicidal violence, but also a useful model for future studies in the field …' Peter Sposato, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books (Rutgers)Table of Contents1. Nova Science Publishers Inc Violence in Schools, Colleges & Universities
Book SynopsisThree decades ago this year (2017), Woodrow W. Clark completed his PhD thesis at the University of California, Berkeley on Violence in Public Schools. Back then, it was a big topic that gained a lot of attention. Clark spent a decade after that in the media doing documentaries on this topic and other social issues, such as sexual harassment, healthcare and baby boomers, along with a dramatic project on what happened to the American Dream based on the demise of the automotive industry in Detroit. All of these topics are relevant and important today. Now, violence in public schools has been expanded from K-12 to colleges and universities due to the increasing amount of violence at that level. Hence, Clark and Kuhn have written a book that looks at the problem of school violence from both a qualitative and quantitative perspective. A key issue then and now is that violence in any institution such as factories, businesses, and even law firms can be seen as coming from people associated with them and from within them. Hence, most violence in schools is a result of people who are students and even former faculty. The problem is also not just physical violence, but also the psychological violence that the perpetrator had experienced while in their educational environment. Once readers realize the reasons behind violence are psychological, the history of violence can be seen as directly connected to the economic priorities that education takes. Most of the money in education goes to the top performers in academics and sports who represent only 10% of the student and staff population. This tactic and focus ignores the other 90%. Hence, when people need help in their studies or even extracurricular activities, there are few resources. The result is often bullying and discrimination. Though the solutions to violence absolutely include security and psychological support, it is the financial resources that are spread out among all levels of students and staff that prove most affective. New programs that address race, sex and career support are needed, as well as security within the institutions themselves. This book provides many cases/examples of what needs to be done and what can be done now to prevent violence tomorrow.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Violence Exposure: Perspectives, Gender
Book SynopsisPerceptions of vulnerability to violence and crime may be affected by differential exposure to risk and by individual, social and contextual factors. As such, this compilation begins by discussing the structural vulnerability associated with young students and analyzing studies that examine the perceptions of this specific population with respect to crime and victimization.Following this, a systematic review of the literature on the prevalence of violence in couples with homosexual orientation is provided, and the risk factors present in these relationships are addressed. The authors maintain that accurate scientific studies regarding the characteristics and risk factors for IPV in same-sex relationships are necessary in order to reduce prevalence and work on prevention. In one study, the potential impact of six different forms of childhood maltreatment on dispositional mindfulness development is analyzed. A number of parental relationship and resiliency protective factors were also added to the analysis. Survey respondents in this college sample completed indices of dispositional mindfulness, childhood maltreatment, parental relationship qualities, and resiliency factors.Conceptual frameworks are systemised and supported by empirical data related to the impact of childs exposure to different harmful situations in order to highlight the co-occurrence of multiple forms of violence throughout the life cycle. The authors intend to discuss the importance of interventions based on risk analysis and management, as well as on protective factors that contribute to the childs well-being.Next, based on empirical research conducted with children victims of domestic violence, the authors examine their experiences and perspectives of domestic violence and the role played by shelters. Implications for intervention and public policies are discussed. The concluding paper presents and discusses the results of an investigation into the depression indicators in Brazilian children and youths, victims of physical violence and/or intrafamilial sexual abuse. The sample was comprised of 1,253 participants, aged 6 to 16 years, 55.2% of which females and 48.2% males.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Hate Crimes in the United States
Book SynopsisReports of hate crimes have been steadily increasing over the past several years, particularly against certain groups; there were reports of 6,121 incidents in 2016 and 7,175 incidents in 2017 (a 17 percent increase). Hate crime experts are unsure if this increase reflects a rise in hate incidents, a willingness on the part of victims to report, or better reporting practices by law enforcement (or a combination of these factors); regardless, these crimes have lasting and far-reaching effects for victims, their communities, and for the nation.Table of ContentsPreface; In the Name of Hate: Examining the Federal Governments Role in Responding to Hate Crimes (U.S. Commission on Civil Rights); Federal Data on Hate Crimes in the United States; Department of Justices Role in Investigating and Prosecuting Hate Crimes; Index.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Family Violence: Prevalence, Risk Factors and
Book SynopsisViolence threatens the sense of cohesion in any environment but especially within the family. It is within the family that the first relationships of trust should develop. It is within the family that we are cared for, provided for and where we find our strength and comfort. When the family purports violence, everything shifts because the family environment becomes one of hostility, a threat of harm or death to the mind and body and general well-being, creating distrust, feelings of fear and overall disequilibrium within the family. This book, Family Violence: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Perspectives, uses a family-centred approach to explore the evidence regarding violence in the family because when there is any type of violence, be it child abuse, intimate partner violence, sibling abuse, child-on-parent abuse or elder abuse, everyone in the family is affected and all family members should be included in the intervention. This book includes perspectives of family violence in different contexts and explores family violence risks.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Perspectives on Violence
Book SynopsisViolence fascinates us. One cannot pick up a newspaper without finding countless articles about brutality; as the saying goes, "If it bleeds, it leads". Overall crime rates, though, have shown a general reduction in recent years. Nonetheless, violence remains a perplexing problem. Anger management is a trendy topic, and an issue faced by many who lack the ability to control violent tendencies and emotions. Why do some commit heinous acts that most of us never let pass the stage of fleeting thoughts? Is violence a product of nature or nurture? What is the government''s role in legislating against violence? These and other like questions cry out for answers. This new book focuses on violent crime and its causes in America, providing varied responses to the above questions. Along with an overview of the violence in the United States, this book provides a compilation of case and hypothetical studies on violence. From the influence of the media to the family environment, from suicidal thoughts to stalking, the selections presented here make for an indispensable resource in studying violence.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Lethal Targeting of U.S. Citizens Suspected of
Book SynopsisThe killing of Anwar Al-Awlaki and another U.S. citizen by airstrike in Yemen, although never officially attributed to U.S. military action, has fuelled the on-going debate about the legal propriety of targeted killings, in particular where a U.S. citizen is targeted or killed. While the Obama Administration has not released a detailed description of the legal rationale undergirding the targeting policy, some insight into the Administration''s thinking can be gleaned from speeches given by high-ranking Administration officials and government filings in a legal case brought by Awlaki''s father in an effort to enjoin military operations against his son. This book examines the debate concerning legal targeting of U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism, by providing legal background, setting forth what is known about the Administration''s position and identifying possible points of contention among legal experts and other observers, including the view from abroad.

Nova Science Publishers Inc From Sexual Deviance to Abuse: Etiology,
Book SynopsisThe concept of sexual deviance refers to the nature of sexual behavior that is nonconforming with societal norms or expectations, is maladaptive and interferes with the individual''s functioning. Sexual deviance is also often perceived as harmful or even dangerous. In most cases, it manifests through the use of force, sexual focus on children or other anomalous activities and targets. It encompasses a vast range of atypical or aberrant sexual behaviors that may or may not be formalised into a law. The author of this book adheres to the theory that although sexual violence may be motivated by opportunistic factors, the common denominator in most instances of sexual abuse is sexual deviance. The results of the authors'' research indicate that most male and female subjects interpret sexual deviance as a multi-causal phenomenon; however, juvenile sex offenders are more likely to externalise these causes rather than attribute them to internal factors. This book is divided into three major parts. The first part focuses on critical review of different theories of etiology of sexual deviance, sex offender characteristics and treatment implications; the second explores attribution of sexually abnormal behavior and its measurement; and the third describes the findings of the study and their relevance to the treatment of sexual abusers.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Active Shooter Incidents & Multiple Casualty
Book SynopsisThe American public has expressed increasing alarm over incidents of multiple casualty violence. While the law enforcement community has progressed in advancing training in the tactical response to incidents, there are significant gaps in strategies aimed at preventing multiple casualty violence. The summit planners invited subject-matters experts from a wide range of disciplines, such as law enforcement, health care, law, social sciences, education, and academia, to help improve the nation''s ability to prevent multiple casualty violence. The participants developed eight recommendations, all centered on the need to create a strategic approach to information sharing in the prevention of multiple casualty violence. Nova Science Publishers Inc Violence & Endurance: Representations of War &
Book SynopsisThis is a volume of essays on post-civil war Central American narrative, bringing together leading experts in Central American literary and cultural studies from the USA, Central America and Europe to access recent developments in the regions artistic output including the emergence of Mayan literature and the criticism it has received inside and outside Central America. The authors draw on the pioneering (though often scattered and difficult to locate) academic work that has been produced so far, and aspire to bring it into focus to produce its own coherent body of criticism as well as point out themes and avenues for future research in the field. The essays address issues that are crucial for the understanding of what has been happening in Central American literature since the late 1980s, and how it relates to earlier literary output in the region. Hence, this book significantly contributes to the knowledge and understanding of Central American textuality over the last few decades, offering new insights into the development of both literary content and aesthetic quality. The main focus is on post-civil war literature, and how it tends to be different in content and style from literature published during the long years of social conflict and armed struggle. While all the essays focus on the main topic, they are wide-ranging, covering literature from the five countries most affected by civil war: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

University of Alberta Press Keetsahnak / Our Missing and Murdered Indigenous
Book SynopsisIn Keetsahnak / Our Murdered and Missing Indigenous Sisters, the tension between personal, political, and public action is brought home starkly as the contributors look at the roots of violence and how it diminishes life for all. Together, they create a model for anti-violence work from an Indigenous perspective. They acknowledge the destruction wrought by colonial violence, and also look at controversial topics such as lateral violence, challenges in working with “tradition,” and problematic notions involved in “helping.” Through stories of resilience, resistance, and activism, the editors give voice to powerful personal testimony and allow for the creation of knowledge. It’s in all of our best interests to take on gender violence as a core resurgence project, a core decolonization project, a core of Indigenous nation building, and as the backbone of any Indigenous mobilization. —Leanne Betasamosake Simpson Contributors: Kim Anderson, Stella August, Tracy Bear, Christi Belcourt, Robyn Bourgeois, Rita Bouvier, Maria Campbell, Maya Ode’amik Chacaby, Downtown Eastside Power of Women Group, Susan Gingell, Michelle Good, Laura Harjo, Sarah Hunt, Robert Alexander Innes, Beverly Jacobs, Tanya Kappo, Tara Kappo, Lyla Kinoshameg, Helen Knott, Sandra Lamouche, Jo-Anne Lawless, Debra Leo, Kelsey T. Spinifex Press Ann Hannah, My (Un)Remarkable Grandmother: A
Book SynopsisAnn Hannah was an ordinary, no-nonsense, practical woman. While a constant and caring presence in the life of her granddaughter Betty McLellan, she remained emotionally distant. In an effort to understand her grandmother, Betty has used Ann Hannah’s everyday expressions as a starting point to uncover the truth about her life. These words and phrases, heard countless times during Betty’s childhood, are the clues to a life that, like those of many working-class women in the early 1900s, was fraught with challenges and difficulties and ignored by historians. What did Ann Hannah mean when she said that she was forced to migrate to Australia from England in the 1920s? Why did she remember her husband as a ‘wickid’ man? How did she cope with the death of those close to her, including her own son? How did she manage to overcome the struggles and disappointments that punctuated her life? Written with a sharp feminist consciousness that displays both compassion and intellect, this astute psychological biography tells the story of a resilient woman who, when placed in circumstances beyond her control, managed to live a good life. It provides valuable insight into the lives of many (un)remarkable women whose lives may have gone unnoticed but whose experiences shed so much light on the realities faced by women throughout the 1900s.

Book SynopsisWhat exactly is rape? And how is it embedded in society?Hilkje Charlotte Hänel offers a philosophical exploration of the often misrepresented concept of rape in everyday life, systematically mapping out and elucidating this atrocious phenomenon. Hänel proposes a theory of rape as a social practice facilitated by ubiquitous sexist ideologies. Arguing for a normative cluster model for the concept of rape, this timely intervention improves our understanding of lived experiences of sexual violence and social relations within sexist ideologies.Trade Review"The book is an ambitious undertaking, and it should be praised for what it accomplishes in asking readers to think critically about how debates over gender, inequality, and accountability frame their key terms." ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Journal of Soviet and Post–Soviet Politics and S
Book SynopsisThis special issue deals with the phenomenon of violence in the post-Soviet space. The central preoccupation is to examine both political and legal discourses and practices of internal and external violence, broadly conceived, in this space. Simultaneously the special issue aspires to situate these discourses and practices in the broader literature on political violence and ethnic and separatist conflict, and to examine these from political, legal, and security studies perspectives. The issue approaches the problem of violence in the post-Soviet space from three perspectives: The international-structural, inter-state, and domestic-political. The contributors focus on structural sources of violence: The relevance of the self-determination principle, the role of democratisation, and the relationship between violent behaviour inside and outside the state. They also analyse the role of the Russian Federation in generating, perpetuating, and mitigating political violence. Finally, they adopt a bottom-up approach, exploring how non-state actors contribute to political violence.

Book SynopsisThe symposium ''Sleepers, Moles, and Martyrs: Secret Identifications, Societal Integration, and the Differing Meanings of Freedom'' held in Reinhausen, 2002, formed the basis of this issue of Ethnologia Europaea. Occasioned by the social, political and mass media discourses after the bombings of New York''s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, an interdisciplinary group of scholars came together to explore the connotations and implications of the term ''sleeper''. The biographies of terrorist perpetrators are but one of many permutations of sleeper-like phenomena in late modern polities. Clandestine operatives of the state are sleepers, and both willing and unwilling victims of terrorism are discursively transformed from sleepers into martyrs. Starting with analyses of the discourses about sleepers in Part I-their historical antecedents, narrative emplotment, and semantic differentiation-Part II turns to the hidden or unspoken of aspects of the state, the challenge of fundamentalist terrorism to the modern political project and the tensions between neighbourly discourse, public display and the state. Part III juxtaposes changing depictions of Shiite martyrdom with the violence done to the term ''martyr'' within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In Part IV, cultural secrets encoded in memorials and public silences in academic discourse are addressed. The different cases assembled offer comparative materials and perspectives from the USA, France, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Spain, Iran, Israel, Istria and Sweden.

VU University Press Honour Killings, Moral Panic and the Emergence of
Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the new millennium, honour-related violence was at the very forefront of public attention in the Netherlands. The emergence of the issue was facilitated by evolving discourses on multiculturalism and was driven by four events, the shootings of Kezban, Hassan, Zarife and Gül. This combination of processes contributed to a reconceptualization of domestic violence against migrant women into honour-related violence. Moreover, the extensive media coverage of these shootings contributed to a moral panic about this issue: honour killings were perceived as a sign of the failing integration of migrants. Together these processes provide an explanation for the widespread public attention for this issue and the emergence of an honour-related violence field. This case study illustrates that the emergence of an issue-based organizational field is a multi-layered process in which various actors, actions and processes come together and influence each other.

Oxford University Press Violence at the Urban Margins
Book SynopsisIn the Americas, debates around issues of citizen''s public safety--from debates that erupt after highly publicized events, such as the shootings of Jordan Davis and Trayvon Martin, to those that recurrently dominate the airwaves in Latin America--are dominated by members of the middle and upper-middle classes. However, a cursory count of the victims of urban violence in the Americas reveals that the people suffering the most from violence live, and die, at the lowest of the socio-symbolic order, at the margins of urban societies. However, the inhabitants of the urban margins are hardly ever heard in discussions about public safety. They live in danger but the discourse about violence and risk belongs to, is manufactured and manipulated by, others--others who are prone to view violence at the urban margins as evidence of a cultural, or racial, defect, rather than question violence''s relationship to economic and political marginalization. As a result, the experience of interpersonal viTrade ReviewViolence at the Urban Margins is an excellent collection of cutting-edge ethnography on the brutality of everyday life in impoverished areas across the Americas. Auyero, Bourgois, and Scheper-Hughes are among the greatest contemporary scholars of violence, and here they've assembled work from the most important new voices in the field. It's an excellent resource for students, faculty, and anyone else interested in understanding the lived experience of urban outcasts in an increasingly unequal world * Eric Klinenberg, Professor of Sociology, New York University *This esteemed group of international scholars brings 'the margins' into the core of contemporary research. A compelling tour de force, Violence at the Margins takes us into the homes, streets, institutions and personal lives of those wielding, suffering, and combatting violence to shed light on power/lessness across global expressions. Weaving together multidisciplinary perspectives, this book adds compelling depth and dimensionality to the literature working to understand violence and its alternatives in the world today. * Carolyn Nordstrom, Professor of Anthropology, University of Notre Dame *Violence at the Margins sets the tone for powerful anthropological interpretations of brutality, fear, and suffering among the poor and marginalised populations of North and South America. * Howard Campbell, Anthropological Forum *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements ; Introduction ; Kristine Kilanski and Javier Auyero ; Section 1: Shared Understandings ; Chapter One: The Moral Economy of Murder: Violence, Death, and Social Order in Nicaragua ; Dennis Rodgers ; Chapter Two: The Moral Economy of Violence in the US Inner City ; George Karandinos, Laurie Hart, Fernando Montero Castrillo, and Philippe Bourgois ; Chapter Three: On the Importance of Having a Positive Attitude ; Kevin Lewis O'Neill and Benjamin Fogarty-Valenzuela ; Section 2: Gender and Masculinities ; Chapter Four: 'Es que para ellos el deporte es matar': Rethinking the scripts of violent men in El Salvador and Brazil ; Mo Hume and Polly Wilding ; Chapter Five: Duros and Gangland Girlfriends: Male Identity, Gang Socialisation and Rape in Medellin ; Adam Baird ; Section 3: Being in danger, what do people do? ; Chapter Six: Fear and Spectacular Drug Violence in Monterrey ; Ana Villarreal ; Chapter Seven: Chismosas and Alcahuetas: Being the mother of an empistolado within the everyday armed violence of a Caracas barrio ; Veronica Zubillaga, Manuel Llorens, and John Souto ; Chapter Eight: Managing in the Midst of Social Disaster: Poor People's Responses to Urban Violence ; Javier Auyero and Kristine Kilanski ; Chapter Nine: When the Police Knock Your Door In ; Alice Goffman ; Section 4: Ethnographic positions and the politics of violence ; Chapter Ten: Standpoint Purgatorio: Liminal Fear and Danger in Studying the "Black and Brown" Tension in Los Angeles ; Randol Contreras ; Chapter Eleven: When the Rule of Law is Irrelevant: Death Squads and Vigilante Politics in Democratic North East Brazil ; Nancy Scheper-Hughes ; Postface ; Philippe Bourgois ; Notes ; Bibliography ; Index
