Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Facing Patriarchy: From a Violent Gender Order to a Culture of Peace
Book SynopsisFacing Patriarchy challenges current thinking about men’s violence against women. Drawing upon radical and intersectional feminist theory and critical masculinity studies, the book locates men’s violence within the structures and processes of patriarchy. Addressing the limitations of current violence prevention policies, Bob Pease argues that a nuanced conceptualisation of patriarchy, that accounts for a variety of patriarchal structures, intersections with other forms of inequality, patriarchal ideologies, men’s peer group relations, men’s sexist practices and the construction of patriarchal subjectivities, is required to understand the links between gender and men’s violence against women. Pease shows that men’s violence against women needs to be understood in the context of other forms of men’s violence, including violence against boys and other men, in the involvement of men in wars and conflicts between nations and men’s ecologically destructive practices which constitute a form of slow violence. With crucial implications for priorities in violence prevention, gender equality promotion and in strategies for engaging men in this work, Facing Patriarchy offers new hope for the elimination of men’s violence. This is an essential book for scholars, practitioners, activists and policy makers involved in violence prevention in national and international contexts.Trade ReviewIn this current era of populism, a rabid anti-feminist backlash, and a rising right, this is a much needed book. Pease’s ground-breaking offering reminds us of the importance of emphasizing a rich gendered understanding of men’s violence against women. Indeed, as he correctly points out, we cannot understand and eliminate woman abuse without recognizing that a substantial number of male actions, values and beliefs are micro-social expressions of broader patriarchal forces. Facing Patriarchy is destined * to become a classic piece of feminist scholarship, one that every man must read.’ *Facing Patriarchy is a highly accessible, critical examination of the urgent problem of men’s violence to women, linking it to other forms of violence, and making strong contributions to stopping it. * Jeff Hearn, author of Men of the World and editor of Unsustainable Institutions of Men *In the struggle for sex/gender justice, Bob Pease’s title is on target – the key is Facing Patriarchy. His radical analysis demonstrates over and over that we will not make serious progress against men’s violence and a host of other problems without a deep critique of patriarchy. In a cultural moment where academic jargon and political euphemisms are designed to derail radical feminism, Pease’s book is a welcome addition to our toolkit for challenging men to be fully human. * Robert Jensen, University of Texas at Austin, author of The End of Patriarchy: Radical Feminism for Men *Table of ContentsIntroduction: Facing patriarchy Part I. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC London Mob: Violence and Disorder in Eighteenth-Century England
Book SynopsisBy 1700 London was the largest city in the world, with over 500,000 inhabitants. Very weakly policed, its streets saw regular outbreaks of rioting by a mob easily stirred by economic grievances, politics or religion. If the mob vented its anger more often on property than people, eighteenth-century Londoners frequently came to blows over personal disputes in a society where men and women were quick to defend their honour. Slanging matches easily turned to fisticuffs and slights on honour were avenged in duels. In this world, where the detection and prosecution of crime was the part of the business of the citizen, punishment, whether by the pillory, whipping at a cart's tail or hanging at Tyburn, was public and endorsed by crowds. The Mob draws a fascinating portrait of the public life of the modern world's first great city.Trade Review'scholarly' The Sunday Telegraph, 'there is no doubting the vigour of the book, or the fascinating and refreshing depth of analysis' Andrew Holgate, The Sunday Times, 18 July 2004 'Shoemaker's vivid depictions of 18th-century Londoners' drink-fuelled aggression and lack of community spirit out to be read by anyone tempted to think that these are aberrations specific to recent years.' Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Football Hooligans: Knowing the Score
Book SynopsisThis book examines how groups of young male fans come to be defined and identified as football 'hooligans and challenges the assumption that violence is wholly central to the match-day experience for these supporters. Rather, the creation of identity is at the root of hooliganism, with all the cultural values and rituals, codes of honour and shame, and communal patterns of behaviour and consumption that accompany it. The author locates hooliganism historically within the milieu of an industrial working class culture and examines ideas of performance and ritual encompassed in idealized masculinity. The book is based on a decades in-depth study of the 'Blades, a group of football fans supporting Sheffield United, who are notorious for their hooliganism. It contributes to the debate on football hooliganism by challenging many traditionally-held notions of hooliganism and by providing the first anthropological study of football violence. The book also debunks the myth that violence between football fans is organized by 'generals operating within hierarchically structured groups. Falsehoods such as this, it is argued, are advanced to augment the powers of the police and media in redefining and controlling particular groups of individuals whose behaviour does not fit easily within increasingly constrictive codes of social conduct. This book represents essential reading not only for undergraduates of social anthropology, sociology and criminology but also for the general reader with an interest in football culture.Trade Review'This is an intelligently-argued book. If you thought football stands were full of middle-class Hornby-ites congratulating each other on their second car and their commuter-belt homes, then think again. Armstrong makes it clear that hooliganism is still going strong.' Total Football 'An intelligently-argued book.' Planet Football '[Armstrong's] conclusions synthesize and expand other explanations; the result is a more holistic, informed interpretation... The monograph's selection for a Guggenheim Foundation Award for Studies on Aggression and Violence attests to its thoroughness and the importance of this perspective. The descriptions and analysis are skilfully crafted. Armstrong's blending of empirical data and theoretical interpretations raise the debate on hooliganism and will provoke further study.' International Review for the Sociology of Sports 'Armstrong is fascinating on the games-playing and ritualistic nature of hooligan confrontations... There's a huge a
