Book SynopsisHow veterinarians and pet owners manage companion animal euthanasiaTrade Review"This book may be found useful by clinical veterinarians and by their clients as well. Veterinarians may find some comfort in knowing that their concerns are shared by many other members of their profession and may learn of different alternative options to deal with these issues. Pet owners will similarly benefit by gaining a better appreciation of the complexity of these issues and of the perspective of the veterinarians. In the end, one can hope that this improved understanding of the issues related to companion animal euthanasia by all parties involved will result in a benefit to the animals, and that will be everybody's gain." - Animal Welfare, May 2013 "[T]his book [offers] detailed insight into the professional and private tensions experienced by practicing vets during the course of their work, but primarily when they perform euthanasia on animals. The author draws expertly from her rich data set, helping us learn a great deal about the nature of this complex occasion. [The book] helps us to understand the ethical and moral complexity of animal euthanasia, how vets undertake this work, and cope with the emotional consequences, for all involved. The rich and insightful nature of the account give[s] us confidence that the author has made significant in-roads into understanding this difficult and complex practice, from the point of view of those undertaking it." - Symbolic Interaction "Morris effectively describes the complexity, frustration, confusion, emotionality, and inconsistency encountered daily by veterinarians who must make decisions about ending the lives of their patients... Blue Juice appears to be the most thorough and accurately depicted work surrounding euthanasia and the effect of euthanasia-related practice issues on veterinary practitioners... Morris's work is an effective and eloquent description of the reality of the conundrum of euthanasia in veterinary medicine... She addresses well the extreme efforts by veterinarians to provide compassionate and professional care for both patients and clients. Morris's observations are compelling, insightful, and artfully articulated. Her book should be required reading for every veterinary student, every veterinary educator, every veterinary curriculum committee, and all veterinary medical education accreditation organizations." - Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, April 2013 "Morris skillfully analyzes...aspects of veterinary euthanasia. In doing so, she sheds light on issues salient for the fields of work and occupations, the sociology of emotions, and, perhaps most significantly, death and dying. Moreover, the book enhances the research on dramaturgy and constitutes an important addition to the growing literature on human/animal relations... Blue Juice brims with insights about the complexity, conflict, and satisfaction associated with not only protecting life but also dispensing death. One of the strengths of the book comes through Morris' analysis of how veterinarians navigate the dual role of healer of animals and provider of services to clients... Another of the book's strengths is its analysis of emotions... Blue Juice is a thoroughly researched, clearly written, well-organized book. It offers a rich ethnographic analysis of euthanasia in veterinary medicine while reflecting on implications that extend far beyond that domain." - Contemporary Sociology "Blue Juice is a valuable and novel investigation of an act which is so commonplace to veterinarians that having someone from a completely different sphere evaluating what we do is a really useful piece of work. Thank you Dr. Morris." - Anthrozoos, June 2014Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: Euthanasia in Veterinary Medicine; 1 - Negotiating Death: Managing Disagreement with Pet Owners; 2 - Creating a "Good" Death: The Dramaturgy of Veterinary Euthanasia; 3 - Strange Intimacy: Managing Pet Owners' Emotions; 4 - Learning to Euthanize: Death and the Novice Veterinarian; 5 - Coping with Euthanasia: Emotion-Management Strategies; Conclusion: Animals as Property and Patients References; Methods Appendix; Index

  • Welfare of the Laying Hen

CABI Publishing Welfare of the Laying Hen

Book SynopsisThe welfare of egg-producing poultry is a topic of great concern to the poultry industry and to researchers in applied animal behaviour. It is also subject to increased legislation. Issues such as battery cages, space requirements, access to daylight and free-range eggs have attracted public interest. This book brings together edited papers from the 27th Poultry Science Symposium of the World's Poultry Science Association (UK Branch), held in Bristol in July 2003. Topics covered include: welfare issues, perception and cognition, behaviour, health and diseases, stockmanship and the environment, handling, slaughter and transport, and perspectives of consumers and producers.Table of Contents1: The importance of welfare, J K Kirkwood, Universities Federation for Animal Welfare and Human Slaughter Association, UK Part I: THE STAKEHOLDERS 2: Hen welfare: consumer perspective, P A W Parrott, Harper Adams University College, UK 3: Government views on the welfare of laying hens, D G Pritchard, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, UK 4: Politics of hen welfare, D Wilkins, Eurogroup for Animal Welfare, Belgium 5: Implications of the World Trade Organization on hen welfare, D Bowles, RSPCA, UK 6: The retailer-consumer relationship with particular reference to animal welfare, R Layton, rlconsulting, UK 7: Quality assurance, J Gittins, ADAS, UK 8: The producer and hen welfare, A Jorêt, Deans Foods Ltd, UK PART II: OVERVIEWS 9: The laying hen: systems of production, A Elson, ADAS Gleadthorpe, UK 10: Stress and the welfare of laying hens, J P Thaxton, Mississippi State University, USA PART III: WELFARE ISSUES 11: Genetic influences on resource use, fear and sociality, J-M Faure, Station de Reserches Avicoles, France, and R B Jones, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 12: The genetics of feather pecking and cannibalism, J Kjaer, Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Denmark, and P M Hocking, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 13: Breeding for productivity and welfare, W M Muir, Pardue University, USA, and H-W Cheng, USDA-ARS, USA 14: Sensory perception : chemoreception, D E F McKeegan, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 15: Vision in the laying hen, N B Prescott, J R Jarvis, and C M Wathes, Silcoe Research Institute, UK 16: Pain and the laying hen, M Gentle and S Wilson, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 17: Chicken cognition, C J Nicol, University of Bristol, UK 18: Social space for laying hens, J J Cooper and M J Albentosa, University of Lincoln, UK 19: Nesting, perching and dust-bathing, L Keeling, Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Sweden 20: Environmental enrichment: the need for practical strategies to improve poultry welfare, R B Jones, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 21: Feather pecking and feather loss, B Rodenburg and P Koene, Wageningen University, The Netherlands 22: Cannibalism, R Newberry, Washington State University, USA 23: Skeletal disorders in laying hens: the problem of osteoporosis and bone fractures, C C Whitehead, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 24: Disease control, D Shingleton, Waterman Farm, UK 25: Environmental management for laying hens, J-M Aerts, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, C M Wathes and D Berckmans, Silsoe Research Institute, UK 26: Lighting, G C Perry, University of Bristol, UK 27: Nutrition, feedstuffs and feeding, M G MacLeod, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK 28: Human – animal interactions, P H Hemsworth, Victorian Institute of Animal Science, Australia 29: Handling and catching of hens during depopulation, D Tinker and P S Berry, Silsoe Research Institute, UK, J A Rycroft, Unilever, UK, and N H Sparks, Avian Science Research Centre, UK 30: Transport of chicks, pullets and spent hens, M A Mitchell, Roslin Institute (Edinburgh), UK, and PJ Kettlewell, Silsoe Research Institute, UK 31: Stunning and slaughter, M Raj, University of Bristol, UK PART IV: OUTCOMES 32: Overview, M C Appleby, The Humane Society of the United States, USA PART V: Posters

Book SynopsisCats, with a global population estimated at 600 million, are considered the most popular pets worldwide, and are adapted to all the environments and to different lifestyles. We can distinguish different types of cat populations, according to their living, which raise different concerns on respect to neutering or contraception. Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) was the first retrovirus isolated in domestic cats, and the infection is associated with a wide variety of clinical syndromes, including feline acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or fAIDS). Inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity are common feline medical conditions and are associated with infectious agents such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), FeLV, herpesvirus (FHV-1) and calicivirus (FCV). The most common oral diseases in cats are gingivostomatitis, periodontal disease, tooth resorption and chronic periapical lesion by the canine tooth fracture. This book discusses the common diseases, clinical outcomes and developments in the veterinary healthcare of felines.

Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to focus on problems unique to the feline alimentary tract in comparison to dogs and to discuss them in detail, but also to highlight areas where knowledge is lacking or can only be derived from comparison with other companion animal species or humans. Instead of being a comprehensive work of “all things GI” in the cat, this book aims to shine a light on topics that are novel, such as the microbiome or probiotics, and might not have been covered by other standard textbooks. This book focuses on “a medic’s perspective” on feline alimentary tract health, which starts with considering differential diagnoses in a structured way based on the most common clinical signs. It also includes the invaluable input from other specialties we so often draw on in clinical practice, namely laboratory diagnostics, diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology and histopathology, and nutrition, which can be a particular challenge in cats. It also covers feline-specific infectious and neoplastic diseases. Appropriate methods for retrieving adequate samples from organs of the alimentary tract in cats are discussed, and a particular focus on the challenges of differentiating inflammation from neoplasia is present in several chapters. Book SynopsisMonitoring and Intervention for the Critically Ill Small Animal: The Rule of 20 offers guidance for assessing the patient, interpreting diagnostic test results, and selecting appropriate monitoring procedures. Based on Rebecca Kirby's time-tested Rule of 20, with a chapter devoted to each item on the checklist Provides comprehensive guidance for monitoring a critically ill small animal patient Emphasizes the interplay of each parameter with one another Designed for fast access on the clinic floor, with potentially life-saving ideas, tips, lists and procedures Presents tables, schematics, algorithms, and drawings for quick reference Trade Review"Although this is one of many books available for practitioners in emergency and critical care, it has a unique method of presenting essential concepts for the complete care of the critical care patient. It is not meant to be a reference to all the most recent journal literature, but it does include recent research which is helpful for clinicians who want to stay current. This will be helpful to clinicians who want a quick reference on the shelf, but don't necessarily want to invest a lot of time and effort to understand the pathophysiology of diseases." (Doody Enterprises 15/03/2017)"Monitoring and Intervention for the Critically Ill Small Animal: The Rule of 20 is a book in which the rule of 20 for human patients has been adapted for monitoring dogs and cats receiving intensive care"....."Each chapter contains an excellent in-depth review of the physiology and pathophysiology of the topic being discussed. For this reason, it will be an especially useful reference for critical care residents, board-certified specialists, and emergency clinicians. The additional chapters on veterinary nursing care of critical patients, wound management, and bandaging make this book beneficial for veterinary technicians and nurses in intensive care units"......"This book is excellent, and I highly recommend it as required reading for all emergency and critical care residents. It will also be a useful reference for emergency clinicians and nurses and small animal general practitioners."
