Elsevier Health Sciences Small Animal Clinical Diagnosis by Laboratory
Book SynopsisHelps you to utilize your in-house lab or your specialty reference lab to efficiently make accurate diagnoses without running a plethora of unnecessary and low-yield tests. This title provides answers to commonly asked questions relating to laboratory tests, and solutions to frequently encountered problems in small animal diagnosis.Trade Review"This textbook strikes a good balance between informative text and illustrative diagrams, graphs and photographs, and is relatively easy to read...This layout is one of its main appeals; readers can skip to the section that most interests the and quickly refresh their memory on differentials for the particular clinical sign or elevated blood parameter that is troubling them, the nread through the potential further tests to pursue a diagnosis...Overall, this book has clear potential to be used as handy reference material by the small animal clinician looking for a quick and simple approach to investigating a particular worrying clinical sign or parameter. Veterinary Students considering a career in small animal practice, or who find themselves confused by lenghty explanations in other clinical pathology textbooks, may also find it illuminating and more enjoyable to use." Vet Record, May 2012 "The text was obviously crafted with one consistent thought:'what will the general practice vet be asking here?' The book has wonderful algorithms and 'causes of...' tables that succinctly guide the practitionerthrough problem-based scenarios; they helpfully indicate when something is rare or common in a general practice population...Overall, Willard and Tvedten is a superb quick-to-read book and my new recommendation." EJCAP, Aug 2012 "The fifth edition is similar in structure to the previous editions but has been updated effectively and despite the stated concerns of the authors that currency is impossible in a profession that is continually advancing, they have come as close as possible to meeting this challenge. The text is logically structured, with chapters based on body systems. Each chapter contains comprehensive lists of appropriate laboratory tests for various clinical presentations...One of the benefits in reading a text such as this is the attention paid to the provision of the context in which the tests are used. The authors have excelled in this and in doing so have provided a readily accessible reference not only for the laboratory tests detailed, but also provided a systematic review of medical conditions and disease in general." Elsevier Health Sciences Small Animal Toxicology
Book SynopsisSuitable for the practicing veterinary clinician in diagnosing and determining treatment for toxic exposures in small animals and veterinary students as a supplement to their classroom instruction, this book covers areas of toxicology which seem basic but are rarely discussed, such as taking a toxicological history, establishing a database.Trade Review"In preface, the authors indicate their remit was to produce a valuable aid to the clinician in practice and also to provide a textbook for veterinary students. Thus the earlier sections are obviously directed at setting the scene and outlining the fundamentals of toxicology...For the most part, UK and European users will find the book extremely valuable...The latest edition revision will certainly be on my shelf and no doubt, end up looking as battered and loved as the earlier editions." Veterinary Record, May 2013 "Written for students and vets in practice, this toxicology guide provides all you need to know to deal with a case of poisoning...Whether based on clinical or toxic signs, the practitioner will get the best advice. Even if we all wish to never need such a book, no doubt it will be extremely useful one day." Tomorrow's Vets, April 2014Table of ContentsSection 1: Toxicological Concepts 1. CABI Publishing Keys to the Cestode Parasite of Vertebrates
Book SynopsisMost previous publications on the classification of tapeworms (cestodes) have been based on compilations from the literature and are now dated. Thus there is a real need for up-to-date keys based on the re-examination of specimens and on a re-evaluation of the characters employed in cestode taxonomy. This book fulfils this need and provides keys to enable specialists and non-specialists to identify cestodes to generic level. The keys are dichotomous and are based largely on morphological characters. The authors have re-examined many specimens, including type specimens where possible. As a result, the keys reflect new ideas and have lead to reappraisals of cestode taxonomy, particularly at family and generic level, with many reallocations and synonymies. The authors include 19 international authorities from the UK, USA, Australia, Brazil, France, Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Bulgaria and the Ukraine. The book includes approximately 1700 illustrations and is a standard work on tapTable of Contents1: Key to the orders of the cestoda, A Jones, R A Bray, and L F Khalil 2: Order Amphilinidea, D I Gibson 3: Order Gyrocotylidea, D I Gibson 4: Order Spathebothriidea, D I Gibson 5: Order Caryophyllidea, J S Mackiewicz 6: Order Diphyllidea, L F Khalil 7: Order Trypanorhyncha, R A Campbell and I Beveridge 8: Order Tetraphyllidea, L Euzet 9: Order Lecanicephalidea, L Euzet 10: Order Pseudophyllidea, R A Bray, A Jones and K I Anderson 11: Order Haplobothriidea, A Jones 12: Order Nippotaeniidea, R A Bray 13: Order Proteocephalidea, A A Rego 14: Order Tetrabothriidea, E P Hoberg 15: Order Cyclophyllidea. CABI Publishing Toxocara: The Enigmatic Parasite
Book SynopsisToxocara is a parasitic helminth worm which continues to stimulate both public concern and scientific interest. Toxocara canis and T.cati, the most studied species, are gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and cats and their eggs can contaminate the environment, thus exposing humans and other mammals and birds to infection. Many questions remain unanswered about the host-parasite relationship, its epidemiology and public health significance. Veterinarians and clinicians are interested in its importance as a zoonosis. The parasite's capacity to cause ocular disease is of concern to ophthalmologists, while its propensity to stimulate allergic manifestations is of interest to allergologists, dermatologists and respiratory medicine specialists. Furthermore Toxocara provides a unique model system to explore questions in parasite biology. This book provides a comprehensive review of Toxocara and the disease it causes known as toxocariasis.Table of ContentsSection 1: Biology of Toxocara 1: Molecular biology and immunology of Toxocara canis 2: Molecular genetic characterization of members of the genus Toxocara - taxonomic, population genetic & epidemiological considerations 3: The larval surface, M Kennedy, University of Glasgow, UK 4: Toxocara and asthma 5: The significance of cerebral toxocariasis 6: Critical assessment of existing and novel model systems models for Toxocariasis 7: Diagnostic limitations and future trends in the serodiagnosis of human toxocariasis 8: Management and treatment options for human disease 9: Ocular toxocariasis 10: Toxocariasis and the skin 11: Inflammatory and immunological responses to Toxocaracanis 12: Novel approaches to immunoprophylaxis for toxocariasis 13: Epidemiological surveillance of Toxocara and Toxocariasis 14: Exposure and environmental contamination 15: Baylisascariasis: an emerging and potentially fatal form of larval migrans Section 3: Toxocara in the Veterinary context 16: Future options for the prevention and treatment of canids 17: Toxocariasis: the Veterinarian's role in prevention of zoonotic transmission 18: Toxocara vitulorum in Livestock Section 4: Economic impact of the disease 19: Economic impact of Toxocara spp.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Avian Influenza: Science, Policy and Politics
Book SynopsisOver the past decade, substantial resources have been spent on tackling avian influenza and building a global capacity for a pandemic response. The catastrophic costs of the 1918 influenza pandemic are well documented, and the swine flu pandemic of 2009-10 has raised the alarm yet again. Across the world, surveillance systems have been upgraded, stockpiles of antiviral drugs and influenza vaccines have been created, veterinary and public health systems have been improved and poultry production and marketing has been dramatically restructured. What are the lessons from this experience? And what does this suggest for the future? This book explores how virus genetics, ecology and epidemiology intersect with economic, political and policy processes in a variety of places - from Bangkok to Washington, to Jakarta, Cairo, Rome and London. It focuses on the interaction of the international and national responses - and in particular the experiences of Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. It asks how effective is the disease surveillance and response system - can it respond to a new pandemic threat? The comparative analysis reveals the challenges and limitations of a technocratic, centralised response, and the need to take seriously local contexts. Drawing from these experiences, the book concludes with a discussion of future prospects and challenges, examining in particular what a 'One World, One Health' approach - where approaches to animal, human and ecosystem health are integrated - would look like in practice. Published in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).Trade Review'Preparing for pandemics is a major challenge for our global public health security. Based on a detailed examination of the experience of the international avian influenza response, this book provides important new directions and options for the way forward. It should be read by all those across the world who are concerned with public health and its underpinning policies.' David L. Heymann, Head, Global Health Security, Chatham House, London, formerly Assistant Director General, World Health Organization, Geneva 'This provocative and stimulating book gives an overview and innovative analysis of a disease of global and local importance. It explores the tensions between international agencies' and government thinking on disease control, and the strategies of local level producers in developing and middle income countries, constrained by poverty and limited technology. This collection of case studies and the original synthesis into which they are woven will be of immediate interest for policymakers, scientists and students of emerging diseases.' Katherine Homewood, Professor of Anthropology, University College London. 'Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, this book is an important contribution to our collective understanding about livestock disease emergencies. Drawing on the stories of those most involved in the emergency response to highly pathogenic avian influenza, it reminds us of the importance of fitting emergency actions to the local institutional context and the difficulty of doing so under pressure and with limited information.' Anni McLeod, Senior Officer (Livestock Policy), UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Rome 'SARS, H5N1 avian influenza and then influenza A(H1N1) are not one-off events, but are indicative of the continuous and persistent threat of emerging and re-emerging zooonotic diseases. Rigorous analysis about what we have learnt from the H5N1 response, as well as vigorous debate and rapid consensus building about how to become better prepared in the future is urgently required. We see this publication as an important response to that need.' Jimmy W. Smith, Team Leader - Livestock, World Bank, Washington DC 'Avian influenza has repeatedly made the headlines since its re-emergence in Asia in 2004. However, the research agenda, dominated by biological aspects of disease control, has largely neglected the human and institutional aspects of the response to a novel threat surrounded by an extremely high degree of uncertainty. This book systematically addresses this important gap, offering insights into what shaped the responses at local, national and international levels. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the various political and economic forces that have driven the responses to avian influenza by combining a detailed analysis of the international setting with carefully selected country case studies. The result is a ten-point agenda for changing the way the global health community addresses the increased risk of emerging diseases. These suggested changes will not be popular, but are necessary if the aim is a safer world for all.' Joachim Otte, Animal Production and Health Division, UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Rome 'This is an important new work, which provides for the first time a deep and wide-ranging analysis of the political economy of the international response to a disease epidemic of global significance.' Peter Bazeley, Livestock in Development, Beaminster, UK 'Complexity in human-environmental systems poses two fundamental challenges for scholars. The first is the need to move beyond buzzwords and abstract theory, through solid, empirical studies. The second is to communicate these insights in a way that is both precise and useful to a wider audience. This book has been able to achieve both in a form that will inspire sustainability science and health scholars for a long time to come.' Victor Galaz, Research Theme Leader, Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University 'Dealing with a new disease such as highly pathogenic avian influenza creates multiple challenges. This book provides a framework for analysing the political economy of animal health policymaking at national and international levels. The book adds to the debate of how to manage disease outbreaks and what lessons need to be taken forward in the search for a new paradigm of 'One World One Health'. A key message has to be that animal disease surveillance, prevention and control measures involve and have an impact on people - and so understanding people's needs is critical to disease control success.'
