Springer International Publishing AG Ecological Urbanism of Yoruba Cities in Nigeria:
Book SynopsisThis book offers in-depth ethnographic analyses of key informants’ interviews on the ecological urbanism and ecosystem services (ES) of selected green infrastructure (GI) in Yoruba cities of Ile-Ife, Ibadan, Osogbo, Lagos, Abeokuta, Akure, Ondo, among others in Southwest Nigeria. It examines the Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) demonstrated for wellbeing through home gardens by this largest ethno-linguistic group in Nigeria. This is in addition to the ES of Osun Grove UNESCO World Heritage Site, Osogbo; Biological Garden and Park, Akure; Lekki Conservation Centre, Lagos; Adekunle Fajuyi Park, Ado-Ekiti; Muri Okunola Park, Lagos; and some institutional GI including University of Ibadan Botanical Gardens, Ibadan; Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta Botanical Garden, Abeokuta; and University of Lagos Lagoon Front Resort, Lagos, Nigeria. The study draws on theoretical praxis of Western biophilic ideologies, spirit ontologies of the Global South, and largely, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) to examine eco-cultural green spaces, home gardens, and English-types of parks and gardens as archetypes of GI in Yoruba traditional urbanism, colonial and post-colonial city planning. The book provides methods of achieving a form of modernized traditionalism as means of translating the IKS into design strategies for eco-cultural cities. The strategies are framework, model, and ethnographic design algorithms that are syntheses of the lived experiences of the key informants. Book SynopsisIn short, following Marshall McLuhan’s famous provocation, the editors focus less on the message and more on the medium of research. This involves retreating from research contents—the topics, themes, questions, hypotheses, insights, ideas, concepts, and thoughts—for the moment to consider the materials, methods, tools, techniques, and approaches that support them. This change in perspective reveals a rich array of research approaches that include: the visual documentationof complex stakeholder interests, political and economic circumstances in built form and design vision; two-and three-dimensional mapping of vegetation, temperature and humidity, in conjunction with point cloudterrestrial and airborne laser-scanning technology; gathering data from sensors and geospatial data; emergence of “solution spaces”and multi-dimensional complexity science; subject oriented approaches to behavioural and cognitive decision making in city navigation; and approaches to emergent phenomena such as extended urbanisation that are not always visible to existing analytical or documentary lenses.

Springer International Publishing AG One Hundred Years of Zoning and the Future of
Book SynopsisThis book reconsiders the fundamental principles of zoning and city planning over the course of the past one-hundred years, and the lessons that can be learned for the future of cities. Bringing together the contributions of leading scholars, representing diverse methodologies and academic disciplines, this book studies core questions about the functionality of cities and the goals that should be promoted via zoning and planning. It considers the increasing pace of urbanization and growth of mega cities in both developed and developing countries; changing concepts on the role of mixed-use and density zoning; new policies on inclusionary zoning as a way to facilitate urban justice and social mobility; and the effects of current macrophenomena, such as mass immigration and globalization, on the changing landscape of cities. The book’s twelve chapters are divided into four parts, each addressing different aspects of zoning and planning by combining theoretical analysis with a close observation of diverse case studies from North America and Europe to the Middle East and developing economies. Part I offers a critical analysis of the conventional account of zoning as a top-down form of land-use regulation starting with the 1916 NYC code. Part II studies how contemporary concepts of zoning, both substantive and procedural, impact the built environment across today’s cities. Part III revisits the economic foundations of zoning and urban policy in the context of domestic markets, as compared with the regulatory and market effects of interstate agreements on cross-border real estate investments. Part IV analyzes the dominant, yet often implicit social and political motives that are driving zoning policies across different countries. This volume’s focus on the ties between zoning policy and economics, politics, socioeconomic conditions, and the local-to-global scope of governance will appeal to scholars and students of political science, economics, law, planning, sustainability, geography, sociology, and architecture, as well as policy-makers and practitioners, especially those in developing countries and transitional and emerging economies.Table of ContentsChapter 1: History of US Zoning in Comparative Perspective.- Chapter 2: North American Zoning: Real Estate Regulation, Past and Present.- Chapter 3: Market Externalities and the Evolution of Zoning.- Chapter 4: Beyond Zoning: Making A Place for Community Well-Being.- Chapter 5: Poor Zoning: The World Bank and Urban Planning Reform in India.- Chapter 6: Community Benefits Agreements: Flexibility and Accountability in the Land-Use Regulation Matrix.- Chapter 7: Zoning After the Berlin Wall: A Place-Based Policy Evaluation.- Chapter 8: Why Did Regional Income Convergence in the US End: The Role of Zoning.- Chapter 9: TTIP and CETA - Frivolous Claims to Democratic Legitimacy of Urban Development and Bona Fide Land Policies.- Chapter 10: Social Topographies- Rethinking Zoning Strategies.- Chapter 11: Checks and Balances in Planning Decentralization: Lessons from the Ontario Planning System.- Chapter 12:Revitalizing Land Use Law.

Springer International Publishing AG The Forest and the City: The Cultural Landscape
Book SynopsisAmsterdamse Bos, Bois de Boulognes, Epping Forest, Hong Kong’s country parks, Stanley Park: throughout history cities across the world have developed close relationships with nearby woodland areas. In some cases, cities have even developed – and in some cases are promoting – a distinct ‘forest identity’. This book introduces the rich heritage of these city forests as cultural landscapes, and shows that cities and forests can be mutually beneficial.Essential reading for students and researchers interested in urban sustainability and urban forestry, this book also has much wider appeal. For with city forests playing an increasingly important role in local government sustainability programs, it provides an important reference for those involved in urban planning and decision making, public affairs and administration, and even public health. From providers of livelihoods to healthy recreational environments, and from places of inspiration and learning to a source of conflict, the book presents examples of city forests from around the world. These cases clearly illustrate how the social and cultural development of towns and forests has often gone hand in hand. They also reveal how better understanding of city forests as distinct cultural and social phenomena can help to strengthen synergies both between cities and forests, and between urban society and nature.Table of ContentsPreface 1) Introduction · Culture, landscape and forest · The urban era · Cities and trees · Cities and forests · City forests as cultural landscapes, Place and Space · The city forest defined · Contents of this book 2) The Spiritual Forest · Ancient spiritual links between forests and people · Forest and religion · Forest and myths · Modern spirituality · (Re)Creating spiritual links 3) The Forest of Fear · Primeval forest fear · Criminal forests · Nature’s dangers · From fear to excitement and adventure 4) The Fruitful Forest · Subsistence forests · Appropriation of city forest use · City forests and societal development · The rise of municipal forest · The Fruitful Forest today 5) The Forest of Power · From wooded commons to elitist prestige · Military forests · City forests and democratisation · City forests and city image · City forests and environmental justice · City forest governance 6) The Great Escape · An antidote to the city · Recreate and enjoy · Window to the world · New ways of escaping · Different people, different escapes · Escape from city rule 7) A Work of Art · City forests as source of inspiration · Designed landscapes · Settings for art · Art, forests and community 8) The Wild Side of Town · City forests and nature conservation · Nature is in the eye of the beholder · The quest for urban wilderness · Working with nature · Native versus alien 9) The Healthy Forest · Views on nature and health · City forests and physical health · City forests and mental health and wellbeing · The Healthy Forest in practice 10) The Forest of Learning · City forests as testing grounds · International inspiration · Demonstrating forestry to the public · Forests and landscape laboratories 11) The Youthful Forest · Children and nature · Forests as settings for play and adventure · Forests as nearby nature · Forests for children’s education 12) The Social Forest · From wooded commons to forests for all · Social forests for mass use · City forests as social stages · City forests and place making · Building social cohesion and community identity 13) A Forest of Diversity · Diversity in city forests over time · Changing fashions · A growing diversity in forest users and preferences · Managing for diversity 14) A Forest of Conflict · Urban development conflicts · Conflicts over forest management · Recreational conflicts · A range of opinions and interests · Managing conflicts and creating new opportunities 15) A Forest for the Future · City forests in the Anthropocene · City forests as part of green infrastructure and urban landscapes · City forests and our place in nature · Governance, design and management · Final thoughts Literature Index

(Sebastian Strunz, in: Politische Vierteljahresschrift PVS, Jg. 61, 2020) “... Januar 2020) “... Based on how cities are developing today in an increasingly urbanized world, it explains ecological challenges for cities of the 21st century such as resource efficiency, climate change, moderation of quality of life and resilience. The book combines theories of urban development and ecology with practical applications and case studies, thus identifying potential for improvement and examples of good ecological urban development worldwide. It shows that cities are by far not only problem areas but also offer great potential for a good life and that the various urban ecosystems can make a considerable contribution to this. The "eco-city" is thus not a utopia, but a real goal that can be pursued step by step in a targeted manner, taking into account the local and regional context.Four renowned urban ecologists have contributed their specific experience in sub-areas without losing sight of the big picture. Jürgen Breuste is an urban ecologist and works at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg, Austria, on the topics of sustainable urban development, urban biodiversity, ecosystem services and eco-cities. Dagmar Haase is Landschaftsökologin and works at the Humboldt University of Berlin on urban ecosystem services and land use modeling. Stephan Pauleit is a landscape planner and works at the Technical University of Munich on strategies for the sustainable development of urban landscapes. Martin Sauerwein is a geographer and works at the University of Hildesheim on geo-ecology in cultural landscapes, geoarchaeology and soil protection. The textbook addresses a broad audience of students, teachersand also to practitioners in the fields of ecology, urban ecology, urban development, sustainability, urban geography, nature and landscape conservation, spatial planning, landscape ecology, social sciences and urban studies. The numerous photos and graphics, many of them in four colors, as well as clear tables illustrate the facts. Case studies, examples and explanations allow a deeper insight. Questions at the end of each chapter allow the progress of knowledge to be checked, and a comprehensive bibliography for each chapter provides further studies. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Stadtökosysteme by Jürgen Breuste published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2016. United Nations Tracking sustainable mobility in Asia-Pacific
Book SynopsisFor many decades, cities in the Asia Pacific region have followed unsustainable patterns of transport development: worsening congestion and traffic safety, deteriorating air quality, high consumption of fossil fuels, and rising greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, many city governments are now developing sustainable transport strategies to target these issues and promote more sustainable modes, such as public transport and non-motorized transport. To date, however, their efforts to design effective strategies have been thwarted by their limited capacity to collect and analyze data. The Sustainable Urban Transport Index (SUTI) was developed by ESCAP to address this gap. The SUTI is a tool that summarizes, tracks and compares the performance of cities in sustainable urban transport and related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SUTI is a composite index made up of ten indicators, each measuring different aspects of sustainable urban transport. In addition, the data which make up the SUTI can be collected by city officials at low cost and on a regular basis, thereby allowing them to continuously monitor their city's performance over time. The main aim of this report is to demonstrate how SUTI can be used by policymakers to monitor progress towards sustainable urban mobility, as well as to identify those policies which will move urban transport systems towards sustainability. It contains the results of SUTI assessments conducted in 24 cities of the Asia and Pacific region between 2017 and 2021

Springer Verlag, Singapore City Form, Economics and Culture: For the
Book SynopsisThis is a book about how cities occupy space. We are not interested in architectural masterpieces, but the tools for reinventing city life. We try to provide a framework for the architecture and design of public space without aesthetic considerations. We identify several defining factors. First of all, history as the city today very much depends on how it was yesterday. The geographical location and the technology available at a point of time both play a constraining role in what can be done as well. Culture, in the form of social norms, laws and regulations, also restricts what is possible to do. On the other hand, culture is also important in guiding the ideas and aspirations that together inform what society wants the city to be. The city needs government intervention, or regulation, to ameliorate the problem posed by a tangle of externalities and public goods. We focus on two comparative case studies: the evolution of urban form in the US and how it stands in a sharp contrast with the evolution of urban form in Japan. We emphasise the difference in regulations between both jurisdictions. We study how differences in technological choices driven by culture (i.e. racial segregation), geography (i.e. the availability of land) and history (i.e. the mobility restrictions of the Tokugawa period) result in vast differences in mobility regarding the share of public transport, walking and cycling versus motorised private transport. American cities are constrained by rules that are much further from the neoliberal economic idea of free and competitive markets than the Japanese ones. Japanese planning promotes competition and through a granular, walkable city dotted with small shops, fosters variety in the availability of goods and services. We hypothesise how changing regulations could change the urban form to generate a greater variety of goods and to foster the access to those goods through a more equitable distribution of wealth. Critically, we point out that a desirably denser city must rely on public transport, and we also study how a less-dense city can be made to work with public transport. We conclude by claiming that changes in regulations are very unlikely to happen in the US, as it would require deep cultural changes to move from local to a more universal and less excluding public good provision, but they are both possible and desirable in other jurisdictions.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Why cities exist?- Cities are more important than ever.- Public goods, externalities and the city.- Governing for the public good: the problem of city governance and planning.- Growth and shape of the pre-industrial city.- The raise of the rail-based mechanical city.- Motorisation and the city: America leads the world.- The Japanese experience: the raise of the minimal car use megalopolis.- Following America, not Japan: car dependent emerging megacities.- Motorisation and de-motorisation in Europe.- Conclusions.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Disaster Management and City Planning: Lessons of
Book SynopsisThis book first provides a comprehensive guideline for future disaster-resistant city planning in large cities in disaster-prone countries such as Japan. It is a compilation of knowledge and know-how obtained through the author’s work in the national government for one and half years in the Earthquake Reconstruction Headquarters, right after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on 17 January 1995. The author has carefully examined the various ad hoc measures taken just after the earthquake, which were criticized because they did not work as well as expected. Additionally, he has examined the later revisions in disaster and risk management systems made at the levels of local and national governments through experience in the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, to which the author had long been committed. The author argues that the rescue activities, rehabilitation, and reconstruction plans for disaster countermeasures implemented once a disaster has occurred and the city planning established in ordinary times should be extremely tightly connected with each other. City planning that subsumes rescue activities, rehabilitation, and reconstruction plans against what ought to have happened would critically improve the capability of crisis management and, consequently, protect life and property once a disaster has occurred. Such city planning eventually creates disaster-resistant cities. This book assumes readers to be graduate students who study city planning. It is also beneficial for practitioners and policy makers who are in charge of the construction of disaster-resistant cities at the national and local levels of governments, especially in disaster-prone countries. Table of ContentsChapter 1. The Initial Response Systems used for Major Earthquakes and Disaster-resistant City Planning.- Chapter 2. Theory of Spare City Planning: for Temporary Use in Case of Emergency.- Chapter 3. Reconstruction Plans.- Chapter 4. Summary and Issues That Need to Be Considered.- Chapter 5. Springer Verlag, Singapore Renewable Energy Scenarios in Future Indian Smart
Book SynopsisThis book presents recent advances in renewable energy scenarios for future Indian smart cities including technologies and devices at the scales of both experimental and theoretical models for Industry 4.0, the concept of automated and computerized industrial manufacturing and practices. The current Indian economy is inclined towards smart urban cities, but the energy deficit in modern society is not well recognized. As a result, there is an enormous need to explore alternative avenues of energy for future smart cities. Because such cities depend significantly on technologies and devices that comprise Industry 4.0, the synthesis of energy scenarios enables an understanding of the technology, applications and devices that contribute immensely to the textile, construction, cosmetics, biomedical and environmental industries, among others. NUS Press Jakarta: City of a Thousand Dimensions
Book SynopsisA study of the forces that shaped Jakarta into the city it is today. Indonesian writer Seno Gumira Ajidarma has called Jakarta a city of a thousand dimensions. A megacity of 30 million under threat from rising sea levels and temperatures, Jakarta and its resilient residents improvise and thrive. This book teases out some of the dimensions that have given shape to contemporary Jakarta, including the city’s expanded flexibility in accommodating capital and labor, and the consistent lack of planning that can be understood as a result of both politics and the poetics of governing in the region. Jakarta is essential reading for those seeking to understand one of Asia's most dynamic cities.Table of ContentsDedicationList of FiguresPrefaceIntroduction: A City with a Thousand Dimensions: Theory, Practice, Subjectivity1. NUS Press Mandalay and the Art of Building Cities in Burma
Book SynopsisDrawing on original Burmese texts and illustrations, recent scholarship, and mapping, Mandalay and the Art of Building Cities in Burma argues that the founding of Mandalay shifted critically in emphasis and scale during its planning from a protocol that established the royal city as a “cosmic city” to one that viewed the royal capital as a sanctuary. As part of that shift, FranÇois Tainturier shows, the founding protocol used Buddhist narratives as models for action and drastically altered patterns of spatial order that had been prevalent at former royal capitals. The systematic planning of Mandalay and the construction of its potent landscape constituted the expression—formulated not in words but in tangible form—of the throne’s claim that Burma was a “Buddhist land,” at a time when Lower Burma had been annexed by non-Buddhist believers. Tainturier provides further insight into how rulers articulated their lineage, power, and the promotion of Buddhism by creating potent landscapes. Mandalay and the Art of Building Cities in Burma renews scholarly discussion on Southeast Asian urban traditions and offers a critical investigation into the “cosmic” dimensions of one of the region’s centers of power.Trade Review“François Tainturier and NUS Press show a work of very good quality. The visual quality, the format, the large number of figures–old maps, photos from the colonial era, diagrams and comparative plans–the care given to the very beautiful layout, are all elements that strike you at first sight.” * Moussons *[This] is a fascinating book, fluidly written, thoroughly researched and clearly structured around key arguments. . . . Overall, the book is a textured and meticulous work of passion that deserves to be read by anyone interested in Southeast Asia’s cultural, religious and urban history. It is also a valuable reminder that Burma can be apprehended and appreciated for its cultural and historical richness beyond the horrors faced by its people today.” * SOJOURN *“In producing this uniquely interdisciplinary study of Mandalay’s urban planning history, Tainturier effortlessly integrates disparate scholarly domains, including religion, architecture, history, and area studies… The careful analysis that distinguishes this book makes it a significant contribution to the historiography of urban planning outside Europe and the Americas, and demonstrates that local concepts and terminologies need not always be understood as perennial or inherent. To engage in nuanced discussion, scholars also need to take historical change into account.” * Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians *Table of Contents 1. Introduction 2. ISEAS Urban Transition in Hanoi: Huge Challenges Ahead
Book SynopsisVietnam is in the midst of one of the world’s most rapid and intensive rural-to-urban transitions. In Hanoi, heritage preservation has gained significant policy attention over the last decades, but efforts continue to focus on the Old Quarter and Colonial City to the exclusion of collective socialist housing complexes and former village areas, and natural features such as canals and urban lakes.Parks and public spaces are urgently needed to offset the high residential densities and to improve the quality of life of residents.Motor vehicles continue to fuel the growth in transportation. Significant efforts were recently made to establish a mass transit system, but progress there is slow. More attention should be paid to improving the existing transportation system and to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Investments in new housing estates have fuelled a speculative real estate market but failed to address adequately the needs of the vulnerable segments of the population.Regional integration is a challenge as the city expands and swallows the peri-urban areas around the city.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Inclusion and Belonging in Cities of Tomorrow:
Book SynopsisThis open access book uncovers the historical context and entrenched beliefs that have perpetuated exclusionary urban landscapes and disadvantage for marginalized groups. It offers an in-depth exploration of the intricate interplay of geographical space, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping our cities and exacerbating spatial injustice. The construction industry, a vital agent in forging accessible environments, often falls short in accommodating persons with disabilities and older individuals. This important book underscores the urgent need for integrated approaches woven into the fabric of cities, companies, and the construction industry itself, to ensure universal accessibility. Drawing upon practical strategies and compelling case studies, the book presents actionable frameworks such as the DisCo Policy Framework and the Iceberg of Inequality Model, facilitating the assessment of progress towards achieving radical inclusion. Inviting readers to embark on a journey into the cities of tomorrow, where inclusion and belonging are the norm, it concludes with a simple idea: the future is accessible.Table of Contents1 Radical Inclusion: The Key to Urban Transformation2 The Legacy of Radical Exclusion in Cities3 Constructing a New Approach to Radical Inclusion4 How Cities Shape Our Experience5 Making and Measuring Progress in Radically Inclusive Cities6 Emerging Trends in Cities of Tomorrow7 The Era of the New Normal

NUS Press Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore: Power
Book SynopsisIn the British colonial city of Singapore, municipal authorities and Asian communities faced off over numerous issue. As the city expanded, disputes arose in connection with sanitation, housing, street names, control over pedestrian 'five-foot-ways', and sacred spaces such as burial grounds. Brenda Yeoh's Contesting Space in Colonial Singapore details these conflicts and how they shaped the city. The British administration structured the private and public environments of the city with an eye toward shaping human behaviour, following scientific principles and the lessons of urban planning in other parts of the world. For the Asian communities, Singapore was the place where they lived according to their own values, priorities and resources. The two perceptions of the city frequently clashed, and the author reads the cityscape of Singapore as the result of this contest between discipline and resistance. Drawing on meticulous research and a theoretically sophisticated use of cultural and social geography, post-colonial historical discourse, and social theory, the author offers a compelling picture of a critical stage in Singapore's past. It is an important contribution to the study of colonial cities and an indispensable resource for understanding the shape of modern Singapore.Trade ReviewHistorical urban geography at its best!" —Progress in Human Geography"What a splendid book this is!" —Journal of Southeast Asian Studies

NUS Press Mega-Urban Regions in Pacific Asia: Urban
Book SynopsisSoutheast Asia contains four urban conglomerates of the sort that this study characterizes as Mega-Urban Regions - Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh. These locations are examined in this book, along with Taipei and Shanghai. Because the administrative boundaries of the cities at the core of these zones do not include the entire urban area, the significance of the broader urban community has largely escaped scholarly attention. The authors base their analysis on actual agglomeration size rather than administrative boundaries, and draw on unpublished census data to study the dynamics of these massive urban zones, considering area and population size as well as social and demographic patterns of change in core, inner and outer zones. They conclude that these mega-urban regions continue to increase their share of national populations, and zones immediately beyond the official metropolitan boundaries are where the most dramatic changes are occurring.
