Book SynopsisAn innovative examination of typography as a medium of communication rather than part of print or digital media.Typography is everywhere and yet widely unnoticed. When we read type, we fail to see type. In this book, Kate Brideau considers typography not as part of print media or digital media but as a medium of communication itself, able to transcend the life and death of particular technologies. Examining the contradiction between typographic form (often overlooked) and function (often overpowering), Brideau argues that typography is made up not of letters but of shapes, and that shape is existentially and technologically central to the typographic medium. After considering what constitutes typographic form, Brideau turns to typographic function and how it relates to form. Examining typography's role in both the neurological and psychological aspects of reading, she argues that typography's functions exceed reading; typographic forms communicate, but that commun

  • The Fundamentals of Typography

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Fundamentals of Typography

Book SynopsisDemonstrating the power and variety of typography from hand-drawn to kinetic, this fully updated new edition of The Fundamentals of Typography covers the principles of using type across a range of media. Starting with a comprehensive introduction to the history of typography, the authors provide detailed explanations and inspirational examples of type usage from leading practitioners from around the world. With expanded practice exercises and four new case studies, this book gives students everything they need to know to use type effectively and creatively.Trade ReviewAs a design teacher and typeface designer I’ve come across many great books on Typography. The Fundamentals of Typography is definitely among them, but it takes a step beyond. It covers in one book what I’d typically need many for. It has all the essential content for a basic type course while offering a wealth of information for advanced learners. It is rich in history and spans many cultures and alphabets. Learners can connect with the subject and gain contextual awareness through case studies, examples, and exercises with well-structured methods. I’m thrilled to find comprehensive information on optical, technical, and ethical dimensions all in one place. It’s a must-have for any student and designer's bookshelf -- Donald Tarallo, Graphic Designer for Tarallo Design and Associate Professor at Fitchburg State University, USAThe Fundamentals of Typography approaches the subject in such a way that the book can be used for a student just getting introduced to the idea of typography, yet has enough depth for the more advanced student. The unique typographic examples, combined with exercises at the end of the chapter that I actually want to assign to my students, makes this book my choice for the classroom. The new edition's updated interview-based case studies present contemporary cases that are inspiration for class projects. -- Brytton Bjorngaard, Director of Visual Arts and Associate Professor of Digital Media, University of Illinois Springfield, USAIt is exciting to see examples of type that often do not appear in books on typography. -- Joe Gilmore, Teaching Fellow in Graphic Design, University of Leeds, UKTable of ContentsIntroduction 1 Type and Language The alphabet/Early printing/1800s/The Arts and Crafts movement/The early 20th century/1950s/ 1960s/ 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/graphic design today/Case study/Typography task 2 A Few Basics Typefaces and fonts/Typeface anatomy/Relative and absolute measurements/X-height/Basic terminology/Majuscule and minuscule/Set width/The baseline grid/The golden section/The Fibonacci sequence/ Dividing the page/Standard paper sizes/The page--how we read/Case study/Typography task 3 Letterforms Type families/Typeweight variations/Frutiger's grid/Types of serif/Fractions/Superscript and subscript/Numerals/ Diacritical marks/Punctuation/Drop and standing capitals/Dashes/Character spacing/Expert sets and special characters/Small capitals/Ligatures, diphthongs and sans serif logotypes/Italic and oblique/ Type classification systems/newspaper text faces/Hand-drawn type/Case study/Typography task 4 Words and Paragraphs Calculating line lengths/Kerning/Automated kerning tables/Alignment/Word spacing, hyphenation and justification/ Type detailing/Leading/Indents/Indexes/Case study/Typography task 5 Using Type Hierarchy/Color/Surprint, overprint, knockout and reverse/Printing and type realization/Grids and fonts/Generating type/Legibility and readability/Texture/Type as image/Concrete poetry, typograms, trompe l'oeil and calligrams/Humor/Vernacular/Appropriation/Ownership/Case study/Typography task 6 Digital Type Vectors and rasters/Type on screen/Kinetic typography/Environmental typography/Case study/Typography task Glossary Contacts Index

Its three volumes bring together for the first time works such as the St Denis Missal of 1350 and the Chambord Missal of 1844, the Sanvito Petrarch of 1463-64 and William Morris's Book of Verse of 1870. • The ABC of Typography

    SelfMadeHero The ABC of Typography

Book SynopsisTypography confronts us everywhere: in books and newspapers, on road signs, product packaging and political leaflets. It is ubiquitous to the point of mundanity. But while the typeface might be secondary to the message, it remains crucial to the way we respond. Fonts spark emotions; they evoke eras and ideologies. Some, like Edward Johnson’s for the London Underground, have become iconic. Others, like comic sans, are loathed. Each one has its own place in history. The ABC of Typography traces 3,500 years of type, from Sumerian pictographs, through Roman calligraphy, to Gutenberg, the Bauhaus and beyond. Brimming with insight and anecdote, this witty and well-informed graphic guide explores the historical, technological and cultural shifts that have defined the look of the words we read, as well as introducing the artists who have marked typography’s long history.

The works, documented in schematic drawings and many individual illustrations, are not meant to be recipes; instead, they should provide the reader with impulses of how he himself can set design processes in motion from the outset. The many-sidedness of design with grid systems should be made manifest.

Book SynopsisGeorge Lois is an American icon in graphic design. This book showcases his logos with his own comments on why they work. A bonus in the book is a chapter of world logos made by others with George Lois’s comments on why they are so good. George Lois continues to prove that a memorable brand name interacting with a strong visual symbol to communicate a humanistic idea is the ultimate art form in popular graphic communication. His Big Idea branding and logo design, developed with a built-in, conceptual, “catchy” brand name, can visually impart information in a nanosecond, delivering a specific ethos with a penetrating promise of power that immediately sears a product’s virtues into a viewers’ brain—and has the potential of bringing instantaneous success. Lois boldly states, “My goal, with the vast majority of the brands I have named and logos I have designed, is to create ‘humanistic’ symbols, driven by a pregnant idea, visualizing some recognizable aspect of the human experience, and magically relating it to a unique selling proposition that empowers great advertising and promotion.” If anyone wants to experience the creation of Big Idea Branding, this astounding compilation of the work of George Lois is the ultimate form of clear, precise, eye-popping communication.

    GMC Publications Typographic Specimens

Book SynopsisIn 1831, Reverend Jackson Whitehead served as chaplain aboard the HMS Pica, which accompanied the Beagle on its second survey expedition. Whitehead was a keen collector of fauna as well as a typography enthusiast. Upon realising that the majority of both ships' crews were either committed atheists or budding evolutionists, Whitehead embarked on creating a whole series of natural history specimens made up out of typographical characters. Only recently, after the restoration of Whitehead's ancestral home, has the manuscript of his work come to light. Edited by artist, A.W. Bainbridge, Typographic Specimens presents his menagerie of beasts, fish, fowl and invertebrates, all created from traditional typefaces, numerals and punctuation marks. AUTHOR: A.W. Bainbridge is an artist, designer and educator. His natural talent for drawing led to him studying art, eventually specializing in Graphic Design at Preston Polytechnic. He returned to Higher Education in 1999 and is currently Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communications and Creative Thinking at The University of Central Lancashire. • John Baskerville: Art and Industry in the

Liverpool University Press John Baskerville: Art and Industry in the

Book SynopsisThis book is concerned with the eighteenth-century typographer, printer, industrialist and Enlightenment figure, John Baskerville (1707-75). Baskerville was a Birmingham inventor, entrepreneur and artist with a worldwide reputation who made eighteenth-century Birmingham a city without typographic equal, by changing the course of type design. Baskerville not only designed one of the world’s most historically important typefaces, he also experimented with casting and setting type, improved the construction of the printing-press, developed a new kind of paper and refined the quality of printing inks. His typographic experiments put him ahead of his time, had an international impact and did much to enhance the printing and publishing industries of his day. Yet despite his importance, fame and influence many aspects of Baskerville’s work and life remain unexplored and his contribution to the arts, industry, culture and society of the Enlightenment are largely unrecognized. Moreover, recent scholarly research in archaeology, art and design, history, literary studies and typography, is leading to a fundamental reassessment of many aspects of Baskerville’s life and impact, including his birthplace, his work as an industrialist, the networks which sustained him and the reception of his printing in Britain and overseas. The last major, but inadequate publication of Baskerville dates from 1975. Now, forty years on, the time is ripe for a new book. Book SynopsisThrough the selection of eleven master designers, Jerry Kelly illustrates a wide range of styles: from classically inspired design and historical revival, to novel and modern layouts. Throughout the twentieth century, modern design theories in combination with newer printing technologies offered book designers far more options than were previously available to them. Utilizing these resources, some skillful artisans produced stunning designs in period style, arranging modern re-cuttings of early type designs with historical decoration that resulted in the creation of truly beautiful books; while others preferred a more contemporary aesthetic, building upon earlier principles in a fresh, novel manner. Through the selection of eleven master designers, Jerry Kelly illustrates a wide range of styles: from classically inspired design and historical revival, tonovel and modern layouts. He describes the care with which each designer combined typographic elements in their own unique way. The selection of these designers, ranging from Updike to Zapf, is only a small sampling of the practitioners that the twentieth century produced, but they are indicative of the wide range of book design styles achieved during this exceptionally dynamic century. JERRY KELLY is an award winning designer, calligrapher and printer working in New York City.

Book SynopsisOf all his contributions to the graphic arts, Hermann Zapf's (1918-2015) dedication to sharing his knowledge may be regarded as one of his most enduring achievements. And no institution benefited more from his generosity than Rochester Institute of Technology where, in 1979, he began to teach a series of summer classes in Advanced Calligraphy. The classes attracted an international group of accomplished graphic artists whose hours spent with Zapf became treasured memories. This new book - Manuale Calligraphicum - was conceived as a way to honor Hermann Zapf's legacy at RIT by offering a select group of accomplished former students an opportunity to share, through their art, what those classes meant to them. The specifications for submissions were simple: design an original calligraphic alphabet or quotation that could be presented and formatted in the manner of Professor Zapf's famous model book Feder und Stichel (1950) and printed letterpress to the very highest standards. The variety and quality of the work submitted has been extraordinary. The Cary Collection is proud to present this selection of 19 works from 15 calligraphers as their tribute to a master teacher and dear friend. Limited edition of 325 copies, designed by Jerry Kelly and letterpress printed on Hahnemühle paper by Bradley Hutchinson. Book SynopsisDafi Kuhne is a Swiss designer who works with analog and digital ways to produce fresh and unique letterpress-printed posters. Using very different kinds of instruments, from a MacBook to a pantograph, for his compositions, he pushes the boundaries of design. Never afraid of getting his hands dirty in his creative workshop, Kuhne embraces the labour involved in the entire process of creating a poster from initial idea to finished product. Fusing modern means with the century-old tradition of the letterpress, he forms a new vocabulary on how to communicate through type and form in a truly un-nostalgic way. Never retro, his work is a clever response to the search for new ways of graphic expression: true print. 182 illustrations

  • Helmut Schmid: Typography

Lars Muller Publishers Helmut Schmid: Typography

Book SynopsisThe Austrian typographer Helmut Schmid was a master of his craft. He put his own spin on Emil Ruder’s teachings at the Basel School of Design while remaining faithful to the principles of clarity, simplicity and elegance. Blending eastern and western influences, Schmid honed his skills and put them into practice in the fields of editorial design, packaging of ethical drugs and visual identity of brands such as Pocari Sweat sports drink (Otsuka Pharmaceutical), Maquillage (Shiseido) and IPSA. He also produced independent publications in parallel, such as Typographic Reflections. Helmut Schmid Typography explores the typographer’s oeuvre in its entirety. The book’s generous design allows each image to breathe, and the accompanying texts narrate Schmid’s life and career in an informative but pleasant manner. Complementing the publications Weingart: Typography and Ruder Typography, Ruder Philosophy, this bilingual monograph completes the Basel school of typographic thought.

Book SynopsisTalbot Baines Reed wrote in a period of transition when hot metal typesetting and offset printing were transforming the scale and scope of printing. In the previous 350 years, England had experienced civil war and started the Industrial Revolution. The dissemination of printed information and learning is inextricable to this history, and the art with which this was done is a quintessential part of English culture. Reed is distinctly aware of the great debt that his contemporaries had to the early typographers (notable among them William Caslon - considered the first great English typographer - and John Baskerville), and everywhere in his work is this shown in his meticulous and unstinting presentation of the fascinating details of their artistic exploration and expression. Modern readers will enjoy the technical and historical insight this work affords, and also find the style and presentation fresh and engaging.Table of ContentsPreface; Introductory chapter. Book SynopsisHow New York City subways signage evolved from a “visual mess” to a uniform system with Helvetica triumphant. For years, the signs in the New York City subway system were a bewildering hodge-podge of lettering styles, sizes, shapes, materials, colors, and messages. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. This book tells the story of how typographic orde

Book SynopsisAn exploration of minimal writing—texts generally shorter than a sentence—as complex, powerful literary and visual works. In the 1960s and 70s, minimal and conceptual artists stripped language down to its most basic components: the word and the letter. Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Carl Andre, Lawrence Weiner, and others built lucrative careers from text-based art. Meanwhile, poets and writers created works of minimal writing—visual texts generally shorter than a sentence. (One poem by Aram Saroyan reads in its entirety: eyeye.) In absence of clutter, Paul Stephens offers the first comprehensive account of minimal writing, arguing that it is equal in complexity and power to better-known, more commercial text-based art.Minimal writing, Stephens writes, can be beguilingly simple on the surface, but can also offer iterative reading experiences on multiple levels, from the fleeting to the ponderous. “absence of clutter,” for example, the
