    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe go-to Southern Peloponnese travel guide for discovering the best walks and car tours. Strap on your boots and discover the Southern Peloponnese on foot with the Sunflower Southern Peloponnese travel guide. And on the days when your feet may have had enough, enjoy some spectacular scenery on one of our legendary car tours. The Sunflower Southern Peloponnese guide is indispensable for hiking in the Peloponnese or seeing the Peloponnese by car. There are hidden landscapes throughout mainland Greece, but the region which packs the most variety into the smallest space is the Peloponnese. From the beaches of Arcadia to the fir forests of Mt Parnon, from the olive groves of Kalamata to the pyramidal peak of Prophet Elijah, from classical Sparta to medieval Mani, this compact semi-island has it all. Though the ancients called it 'the island of Pelops', after their mythical king, this three-fingered landmass is joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus at Corinth. Only in the 19th century was a canal finally cut through the isthmus, but it retains the cultural diversity and spectacular scenery of the mainland. Because there's so much to discover, the author has drawn an east-west line roughly through the middle of the Peloponnese, and limited the book to the southern half. By good fortune, this contains its highest mountain range (Mt Taygetus), its finest Byzantine chapels and medieval forts (in the Mani), its wildest seascapes (Capes Tainaron and Maleas), its largest forest (Mt Parnon) and, arguably, some of its loveliest beaches (Pylos, Kiparissi and Elafonisos, to name just a few. Whatever your age or ability we've got some glorious walks and car tours to ensure you have a memorable holiday in the southern Peloponnese. Inside the Sunflower Southern Peloponnese guide book you'll find: * 50 long and short walks for all ages and abilities - each walk is graded so you can easily match your ability to the level of walk * Topographical walking maps - give you a clear sense of the surrounding terrain with a scale of 1:50 000 * Free downloadable gps tracks - for the techies * Satnav guidance to walk starts for motorists * 5 car tours and fold-out touring map - for easy reference on your tour * Strolls to idyllic picnic spots - enjoy our recommendations for where to picnic along the way * Timetables for public transport - ideal if you want to link two walks or avoid hiring a car on your holiday * Online update service for the latest information Whether you tour the islands by car or explore on foot, we look forward to showing you around.

  • Alfa Romeo Alfasud: The Complete Story -

The Crowood Press Ltd Alfa Romeo Alfasud: The Complete Story -

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLaunched in 1971, the Alfasud was an all-new departure for Alfa Romeo, both in its design and its execution and became the best-selling model in the history of Alfa Romeo . Originally it was developed with the dual intentions of launching the company into large volume production and providing a more affordable model than their highly regarded sports cars. However, its story was far from straightforward. Although respected for its technically brilliant design and universally praised for its ride and handling, the model never quite reached its full sales potential and its reputation was marred by problems that could not have been foreseen. With over 240 colour photographs, the book includes a brief history of Alfa Romeo to the end of the 1960s. The development of the Alfasud’s design and the political reasons for building a new factory are given along with the car’s reception from both the press and owners. The evolution of the model from initial prototypes, to the improvements to build quality and performance, including the Giardinetta and Sprint variations are covered as well as Alfasuds in competition. The political and labour problems, as well as the early quality control issues are discussed. Finally, there are numerous specification tables, performance data, chassis numbers, engine codes and colour charts.Trade ReviewThe Alfasud's convoluted tale has rarely been appropriately told outside Italy, as English-speaking authors have generally stuck with a nauseating mix of unsubstantiated rumors and cheap jokes. Thankfully, author Chris Martin proves to be an exception and a very welcome one at that. The depth of his research on the topic is evident throughout the 176 pages of his book, which perfectly fulfills its title promise and can undoubtedly be regarded as the best English-language book available on this subject. -- Matteo Licata * Roadster-Life *This is a welcome addition to the Alfasud canon because it is a comprehensive look at the history of the model, as well as setting the context for its development by including introductory chapters on the history of the company. -- Amatori Alfa reviewer * Amatori Alfa magazine of the Australian Alfa Romeo Owners Club *Its full of solid facts .. and perhaps, the most interesting aspects of this book are the descriptions of the political, industrial and quality problems that surrounded the car. -- Ted Pearson * Auto Italia magazine *Everything you could possible want to know about Alfa's groundbreaking small car including the politics, the BMW-disguised prototypes, and the many aftermarket performance conversions. Utterly fascinating. -- Classic Cars reviewer * Classic Cars *This is not your normal automobile hagiography and answers a lot of questions that begin with ‘why.’ Why was the Alfasud necessary? Why was it designed by Rudolf Hruska? Why was it not built at Arese? Why was it built in Naples? Why were there so many problems with the labor force and factory? What was unique about the design? Why were the Russians blamed for the rust problems? Chris nailed almost all of these questions in a very convincing manner, well researched and interesting to read. It is all there, “The Problems, Rust, Strikes, Politics and Corruption.” Many of us had heard that cheap Russian steel was at the core of the problem, but this is not supported by facts. Martin’s conclusions seem much more likely, though harder to swallow. -- Pete Vack, Velocetoday.com * VeloceToday.com *

  • Chapelon: Genius of French Steam

Crecy Publishing Chapelon: Genius of French Steam

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe name Andre Chapelon will be known to everyone with an interest in the development of the steam locomotive. Put simply he was a genius, head and shoulders above all others in the field of steam locomotive design. This is not to belittle the skills and capabilities of men like Churchward, Stanier, Gresley and Bulleid. Indeed the latter acknowledged the influence of Chapelon on his work.In his native France, Chapelon transformed the steam locomotives of various French railways from often mediocre machines into high performers surpassing the capabilities of similar machines used in other European countries at the time. He was responsible for both rebuilds as well as new designs. His work was disrupted by World War II, but his importance was reasserted in 1946 with his superb 4-8-4 No 242 A 1 capable of producing a continuous output of 5,500hp, a remarkable achievement.Colonel Roger''s book on Andre Chapelon, originally published in 1972, has been difficult to obtain for many years. It remains the best and most detailed biography of the man and his work. It is both a readable and accessible guide to the life and achievements of a man whom few would disagree was the foremost steam locomotive engineer the world has ever seen.Related TitlesThe Somerset & Dorset from the Footplate9781909328921 9.95The LMS Turbomotive9781909328525 27.95Gresley''s Legacy9780711034617 25.00

Book SynopsisFollowing a successful career as an award-winning, best-selling novelist, in 2004 Lisa St Aubin de Teran retreated to a remote village in northern Mozambique. There she found her own African roots, founded a charity, and confronted new challenges. Much has been written about her life and escapades with a trio of Venezuelan exiles, life on an Andean hacienda, her return to literary fame, and two decades living in a crumbling Umbrian palace. But despite all the media hype about her, she managed to hide much of her actual life. Now, like the Japanese art of kintsugi, in this new memoir Lisa puts the shattered pieces of her life back together, filling in many of the dramatic, and often scandalous, gaps. While her life has been said to be stranger than fiction, it is fiction that has kept her afloat. This autobiography sets the record straight and shows a writer who for over half a century has enjoyed following her dreams, even when those dreams outdistanced her reach.Trade Review"Lisa St Aubin de Teran writes with extraordinary vividness and clarity... She faces reality with a courage and skill that left me not knowing which to admire more: her gift as a writer or that she had the guts to carve out a place for herself in such an unforgiving world." (Independent) "Sensual, impressionistic prose that recreates vividly her experiences." (The Times) "An extraordinary woman... if you encountered her as a character in a novel, you'd want to read on." (Express) "She has the surrealist's gift for making the mundane exotic." (Financial Times) "Combines a powerful sense of place with an unusually compassionate understanding of human complexity." (Daily Telegraph) "The author has an enviable narrative gift, and there is something magical about her deployment of it." (Guardian) "A spellbinding storyteller." (The Listener)
