Key Publishing Ltd Irish Railways: 100 Years
Book SynopsisThe 100 years since the Irish Free State was set up in 1923 has seen enormous change, both in society and on the railways. The creation of a border did the railways no good, prompting an upsurge in smuggling, and, with the exception of the few busy trunk lines from Dublin, the rise in motor vehicles threatened the future of the railways. The railways responded by developing lightweight railcars, some of which can still be seen in preservation. Post-1945, General Motors diesel-electric locomotives put paid to steam in the Republic, whilst Northern Ireland's railway network has diminished and freight traffic is now all but extinct. Still, the belated realisation of the danger posed to the environment has produced forward-looking endeavours, with government encouragement. The electric Dublin Area Rapid Transport (DART) of the modern era has thus helped give back city streets to pedestrians, and continues to expand. With over 190 pictures, both classic and modern, this volume explores the past, present and future of Ireland's evocative railways.

Key Publishing Ltd Metroline
Book SynopsisWhen London Buses Ltd's subsidiary companies were privatised in 1994, northwest London-based Metroline passed to its management. The company promptly took over Atlas Bus in 1995 and then n doubling its size in 1998 with the acquisition of neighbouring MTL London. A new livery of red with a deep blue skirt set Metroline apart from its rivals, and in 2000 a powerful but unusually hands-off patron was secured with the company's sale to Delgro (later ComfortDelgro) of Singapore.Since then, Metroline has held its own as a dependable TfL contractor, continuing to expand with the acquisition of Thorpes and Armchair in 2004 and pulling off an even bigger coup in 2013 when First London's western portfolio was acquired as Metroline West. In terms of vehicles, the London Transport inheritance had all gone by 2004 and low-floor purchases moved to hybrids, including Borismasters, and now to electric buses. With over 250 colour pictures, this book is the first of a new series that explores the major

Amber Books Ltd Ancient Egypt: The Cradle of Civilisation
Book SynopsisFrom the Neolithic cave paintings in Wadi Sura – created long before it was a desert when the region was savannah grassland – to the Valley of the Kings to the rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, and from the vast temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor to the funerary mask of Tutankhamun and, of course, to the pyramids and the Sphinx, Ancient Egypt is a hugely colourful guide to the surviving wonders of Egyptian antiquity. Today the exceptional beauty and scale of the antiquities is legendary, drawing millions of visitors to Egypt’s monuments each year. Arranged by region, the book takes the reader along the ancient settlements that were established on the banks of the River Nile. Through beautiful photographs and expert captions, the reader gains an understanding of how ancient Egypt developed its trade links and became such a powerful and wealthy force across North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Alongside the world-famous places, there are also fascinating, lesser-known entries, such as the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the bent pyramid at Dahshur and the Statue of Khaefre. Featuring monuments and obelisks, hieroglyphics and jewelry, funerary masks, tombs and mausoleums, mummies of cats and statues of falcon-headed gods, Ancient Egypt includes 160 outstanding photographs and captions.Table of ContentsIntroduction Old Kingdom Giza Pyramids The Great Sphinx Great Pyramid of Khufu Queens’ Pyramids Khufu Ship, Giza Pyramid Complex Sheikh el-Balad, Saqqara Necropolis Mastaba of Seshemnefer IV, Giza Plateau Pyramid of Khaefre, Giza Plateau Menkaure Pyramid, Giza Triad of Menkaure Pyramid of Djedefre, Abu Rawash Pyramid of Neferirkare Kakai, Abusir Pyramid of Djoser, Saqqara Mastaba of Rahotep Tomb of Mereruka, Saqqara Bent Pyramid, Dahshur Red Pyramid Saqqara Necropolis Pyramid of Unas Pyramid of Meidum Cave of the Swimmers, Wadi Sura Narmer Palette Middle Kingdom Mortuary Temple of Mentuhotep II, Deir el- Bahari Pyramid of Amenemhat III (Black Pyramid), Dahshur Pectoral of Amenemhat III Pyramid of Amenemhat I, Lisht Osiride Pillar of Senusret I Obelisk of Senusret I, Heliopolis Pyramid of Senusret II Tomb of Senusret III, Abydos Pectoral of Princess Mereret, Funerary Complex, Dahshur Beni Hasan Rock Tombs Tomb of Khnumhotep II Egyptian Soldiers, Tomb of Mesehti, Asyut Stela of Abkau, Abydos Colossal Statue of Mentuhotep II, Deir el-Bahari White Chapel of Senusret I, Karnak New Kingdom Pharaoh Rameses II, Memphis Tomb of Horemheb, Saqqara Necropolis Temple of Seti I, Abydos Statue of Rameses II, Memphis Statue of Thutmose III, Karnak Festival Hall of Thutmose III, Karnak Temple of Khonsu, Karnak Chair of Princess Sitamun, Luxor Colossi of Memnon, Luxor Red Chapel of Hatshepsut, Karnak Solar Court, Luxor Great Hypostyle Hall, Karnak Luxor Temple Temple of Merenptah Victory Stele of Merenptah, Thebes Tomb of Thutmose III, Theban Necropolis Hathor Chapel, Temple of Thutmose III, Deir el-Bahari Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Deir el-Bahari Tomb of Ramose, Theban Necropolis Funerary Mask of Tuya, Theban Necropolis Tomb of Tutankhamun, Valley of the Kings Ramesseum, Theban Necropolis Osirian Statues, Temple of Hatshepsut, Deirel-Bahari Tomb of Nefertari, Valley of the Queens Medinet Habu Tomb of Seti I, East Valley of the Kings Side Chamber, Tomb of Seti I Great Temple, Abu Simbel Temple of Nefertari, Abu Simbel Late Period City of Tanis, Nile Delta Tomb of Psusennes I, Tanis Stature of Osiris, Tomb of Psamtik, Saqqara Statue of Isis, Tomb of Psamtik, Saqqara Funerary Mask of Psusennes I, Tanis Ushabtis, Al-Ghoreifa, Tuna al-Gabal Sarcophagus of Wennefer, Memphis Avenue of Sphinxes, Luxor Gate of Nectanebo I, Temple of Amun, Medinet Habu Avenue of Sphinxes, Luxor Tomb of Pabasa, Hatshepsut’s Temple, Deir el-Bahari Tomb of Pabasa, Hatshepsut’s Temple, Deir el-Bahari Head of Shabataka Temple of Hibis, Kharga Oasis Tomb of Baenentyu, Bahariya Oasis Greco-Roman Period Catacombs, Kom el-Shoqafa, Alexandria Catacombs, Serapeum, Amoud Al Sawari Kom el-Dikka, Alexandria Villa of the Birds, Kom el-Dikka Fort Babylon, Nile Delta Temple of Athribis Pompey’s Pillar, Alexandria Temple of Sobek-Re, Dionysias, Faiyum Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, Alexandria Roman Temple, Qasr Qarun, Faiyum Wine Cistern, Roman Farm, El Heiz Oasis Roman Fort, Daydamus, Eastern Desert Temple of Hathor, Dendera Ceiling, Great Hypostyle Hall, Dendera Dendera Light, Temple of Hathor Temple of Khnum, Esna Temple of Edfu Temple of Kom Ombo, Aswan Temple of Philae, Aswan Temple of Mandulis Temple of Kalabsha

Book SynopsisAn engaging portrait of Hampstead Heath – a place rich not just in natural wonders but in history and monuments, emotions and memories, people and places. 'I enjoyed every inch of the way, from Parliament Hill to the Pergola... A late-life little masterpiece' Ferdinand Mount 'A love letter, both to the Heath and to his late wife' Islington Tribune 'An affectionate book which blends personal anecdote, history and interviews' Ham & High The eight hundred acres of Hampstead Heath lie just four miles from central London; and yet unlike the manicured inner-city parks, it feels like the countryside: it has hills and lakes, wild spots and tame spots. Hunter Davies has lived within a stone's throw of Hampstead Heath for more than sixty years and has walked on it nearly every day of his London life. For him, it is not just a place of recreation and relaxation but also a treasure-house of memories and emotions. In The Heath, he visits all parts of this, the largest area of common land in Britain's capital city: from Kenwood House to the Vale of Health, from Parliament Hill to Boudicca's Mound, and from the Ladies Bathing Pond to the fabulous pergola. As he walks, Davies talks to the diverse array of individuals who frequent the Heath: regulars; visitors; dog walkers; stall holders at the weekly farmer's market; famous faces having their morning stroll; twenty-first-century hippies spreading peace, love and happiness.Trade ReviewAn affectionate book which blends personal anecdote, history and interviews with key players from The Heath and Hampstead Society and City of London Corporation, to swimmers and dog walkers * Ham & High *A love letter, both to the Heath and to his late wife... Granta Books Fishing In Utopia: Sweden And The Future That
Book SynopsisFrom the 1960s to the 1980s, Sweden was an affluent, egalitarian country envied around the world. Refugees were welcomed, even misfit young Englishmen could find a place there. Andrew Brown spent part of his childhood in Sweden during the 1960s. In the 1970s he married a Swedish woman and worked in a timber mill while helping to raise their small son. Fishing became his passion and his escape. In the mid-1980s his marriage and the country fell apart. The Prime Minister was assassinated. The welfare system crumbled along with the industries that had supported it. Twenty years later, Andrew Brown travelled the length of Sweden in search of the country he had loved, and then hated, and now found he loved again.Trade Review'... Mr Brown's prose is as clear and bewitching as the lake waters which he learns to fish ... Readers who know the Nordic countries will delight in the author's keen ear and eye for the nuances of language, landscape and social customs' - Economist' - he is a deft writer with a real descriptive talent and a humorous touch - this is an affectionate and insightful portrait, offering a much deeper understanding of the country than the usual, often politically motivated, tendency to stereotype' - Financial Times'Fishing in Utopia is a lament for a lost Eden. But it is more than that. Essentially it is a story of modern rootlessness and the search for something to believe in. The fact that that something turns out, absurdly, to be fishing only makes it more tragic. I can see it becoming a cult book, and not just among anglers' - Sunday Times 'His evocations of his early years in the country are miracles of sensuous recollection' - Telegraph

Cicerone Press The Cambrian Way: Classic Wales mountain trek -
Book SynopsisDubbed 'the mountain connoisseurs' walk', the Cambrian Way stretches 479km between the mighty castles of Cardiff in the south and Conwy on the north coast. Traversing the heartland of Wales, the challenging route crosses the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains and Snowdonia, passing through two national parks and visiting many of the country's iconic summits, including Pen y Fan, Pumlumon, Cadair Idris and Snowdon itself. It can be walked in three weeks (or in shorter sections) and is suitable for experienced hillwalkers with sound navigational skills. The guide presents the route in 21 stages, offering comprehensive route description illustrated with OS 1:50,000 mapping and elevation profiles. Details of accommodation and facilities are provided, along with a helpful trek planner showing their distribution along the route: although the trail passes through remote areas, it is possible to stay under a roof every night - though camping is also a possibility, should you prefer. There are background notes on Wales's history and geology and local points of interest, and a glossary of Welsh place-names, useful contacts and accommodation listings can be found in the appendices. From the Black Mountains to the Rhinogau, Glyderau and Carneddau, the route takes in lofty ridges, striking peaks and picturesque lakes. There are also fascinating glimpses into the country's ancient and more recent past: Iron Age hillforts, Norman castles, a Cistercian abbey, the Chartist Cave and relics from the mining industry. Offering superlative scenery, the Cambrian Way is a celebration of some of the best mountain walking Wales has to offer and promises a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in these celebrated landscapes.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Route summary table Introduction The mountain connoisseurs' walk Wales, its history, people and language Geology and landscape Plants and animals When to go Travel Accommodation Kit Waymarking and navigation Food, water and supplies Emergencies Using this guide The route Stage 1 Cardiff to Machen Stage 2 Machen to Pontypool Stage 3 Pontypool to Abergavenny Stage 4 Abergavenny to Capel-y-ffin Stage 5 Capel-y-ffin to Crickhowell Stage 6 Crickhowell to Storey Arms Stage 7 Storey Arms to Glyntawe Stage 8 Glyntawe to Llandovery Stage 9 Llandovery to Tŷ'n-y-cornel Hostel Stage 10 Tŷ'n-y-cornel Hostel to Claerddu Stage 11 Claerddu to Ponterwyd Stage 12 Ponterwyd to Dylife Stage 13 Dylife to Dinas Mawddwy Stage 14 Dinas Mawddwy to Bwlch Llyn Bach Stage 15 Bwlch Llyn Bach to Barmouth Stage 16 Barmouth to Cwm Bychan Stage 16/17A Bad-weather route to Moelfryn following Taith Ardudwy Way Stage 17 Cwm Bychan to Maentwrog Stage 18 Maentwrog to Beddgelert Stage 19 Beddgelert to Pen-y-Pass Stage 20 Pen-y-Pass to Llyn Ogwen Stage 21 Llyn Ogwen to Conwy Appendix A The checkpoints Appendix B Glossary of Welsh words and places on the Cambrian Way Appendix C Useful contacts Appendix D Accommodation list

Cicerone Press Trekking the GR7 in Andalucia: From Tarifa to
Book SynopsisThe GR7 is one of Europe's longest GR long-distance routes, stretching from Tarifa, the southernmost town of continental Europe, through Spain, Andorra and France to Alsace. This guide presents the Andalucian section of the route, which offers well over 700km of fantastic walking through the diverse landscapes of one of Spain's most evocative regions. The route splits at the small village of Villanueva de Cauche, and the guide describes both the northern and southern variants. Although walking is on good footpaths, country tracks and, occasionally, minor roads, some of the stages are long and can involve considerable ascent, meaning that a good level of fitness is required. The full Andalucian GR7 takes well over a month to walk; however, the guide also includes suggestions for highlight sections that can be walked in a week or fortnight. In addition to clear route description, mapping and elevation profiles, the guide provides background information on local history, plants and wildlife, and advice for planning your trip, such as when to go, what to take and where to stay. The route showcases Andalucia's rich history and culture and varied landscapes, which include pine forests, semi-arid desert, snow-capped peaks, fertile plains, lush valleys, olive groves, cultivated terraces and hills of cork woodland. Historic towns and traditional whitewashed villages offer overnight accommodation and a chance to sample local cuisine.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Route summary table Author's preface Introduction The GR7/E4 Andalucia The GR7 in Andalucia Shorter itineraries Historical context Plants and wildlife When to go Getting there Getting back Luggage transfer Accommodation Food and drink Water Equipment Money Language Waymarking Maps and GPS Staying safe Using this guide The common route Cadiz province Stage 1 Tarifa to Los Barrios Stage 2 Los Barrios to Castillo de Castellar Stage 3 Castillo de Castellar to Jimena de la Frontera Stage 4 Jimena de la Frontera to Ubrique Stage 5 Ubrique to Montejaque via Villaluenga del Rosario Malaga province Stage 6 Montejaque to Arriate via Ronda Stage 7 Arriate to Ardales Stage 8 Ardales to El Chorro Stage 9 El Chorro to Valle de Abdalajis Stage 10 Valle de Abdalajis to Antequera Stage 11 Antequera to Villanueva de Cauche The northern variant Stage 12A Villanueva de Cauche to Villanueva del Trabuco Stage 13A Villanueva del Trabuco to Villanueva de Tapia Stage 14A Villanueva de Tapia to Villanueva de Algaidas Stage 15A Villanueva de Algaidas to Cuevas de San Marcos Cordoba province Stage 16A Cuevas de San Marco to Rute Stage 17A Rute to Priego de Cordoba Stage 18A Priego de Cordoba to Almedinilla Stage 19A Almedinilla to Alcala La Real Jaen province Stage 20A Alcala la Real to Frailes Stage 21A Frailes to Carchelejo Stage 22A Carchelejo to Cambil Stage 23A Cambil to Torres Stage 24A Torres to Bedmar Stage 25A Bedmar to Jodar Stage 26A Jodar to Quesada Stage 27A Quesada to Cazorla Stage 28A Cazorla to Vadillo Castril Stage 29A Vadillo Castril to Coto Rios Stage 30A Coto Rios to Pontones Stage 31A Pontones to Santiago de la Espada Stage 32A Santiago de la Espada to Puebla de Don Fadrique The southern variant Stage 12B Villanueva de Cauche to Riogordo Stage 13B Riogordo to Ventas de Zafarraya Granada province Stage 14B Ventas de Zafarraya to Alhama de Granada Stage 15B Alhama de Granada to Arenas del Rey Stage 16B Arenas del Rey to Jayena Stage 17B Jayena to Albunuelas Stage 18B Albunuelas to Niguelas Stage 19B Niguelas to Lanjaron Stage 20B Lanjaron to Soportujar Stage 21B Soportujar to Pitres Stage 22B Pitres to Trevelez Stage 23B Trevelez to Cadiar Stage 24B Cadiar to Yegen Stage 25B Yegen to Laroles Stage 26B Laroles to Puerto de la Ragua via Bayarcal Stage 27B Puerto de la Ragua to La Calahorra Stage 28B La Calahorra to Narvaez via Charches Stage 29B Narvaez to Zujar Stage 30B Zujar to Benamaurel Stage 31B Benamaurel to Cullar Stage 32B Cullar to Orce Stage 33B Orce to Huescar Stage 34B Huescar to Puebla de Don Fadrique Appendix A Facilities table Appendix B Spanish-English glossary Appendix C Further information Appendix D Further reading

Brewin Books The Worcester and Birmingham Canal: Chronicles of
Book SynopsisThe Worcester and Birmingham Canal, some thirty miles long, was created from 1791, when it was authorised by Act of Parliament, to 1815 when it was completed 24 years later. Although intended as a broad canal for barges and having five broad tunnels, it was eventually completed with narrow locks due to financial difficulties. From Gas Street Basin at the Birmingham end it passes through the suburbs of Edgbaston, Selly Oak and Kings Norton, then through the long West Hill Tunnel and via Hopwood and Alvechurch through countryside to Tardebigge, all this section being on the Birmingham Level. Then it descends in stages via fifty-six narrow locks and two barge locks to the River Severn at Diglis via Stoke Prior, Hanbury Wharf, Dunhampstead, Oddingley, Tibberton, Blackpole and the eastern suburbs of Worcester City. The earlier chapters of this book trace in detail the successive stages reached in making the canal and the reservoirs needed to safeguard the water supplies of millowners, the financial and other problems faced, and the saga of the Tardebigge Boat Lifi. Later chapters cover the history of the canal following its completion, its use for both commercial and pleasure purposes, its administration and management, its upkeep and maintenance, its involvement with railways, and the various industries and amenities which were established beside it, Three of the final chapters feature past and present places and items of interest located along the canal from Birmingham to Worcester. Of special interest throughout is the impact the canal had upon the lives of countless people, those involved in its construction, those who lived and worked on the boats, those who were employed by the Canal Company as engineers, lock-keepers and maintenance men, people who worked in canalside factories, shops, public house, boatyards, and on wharves, and those concerned for the welfare of canal boat families and their animals.Trade Review"Alan has produced a superb, and beautifully illustrated, definitive history of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal." - Chris Daniels, Waterways World. "Alan White's book is a very comprehensive account of the canal and has to be regarded as a definitive work." - Stanley Holland, Canals & Rivers.

Book Synopsis"Robert Hughes is probably the best - and certainly the most accessible - art critic in the world . . . in Barcelona his art-historical and his sociological talents converge in what is often a dazzling collage of Catalan peculiarities" FREDERICK RAPHAEL, Sunday TimesA modern homage to a proud, cosmopolitan city where Gaudí, Picasso and Miró learned how to break all the rules. Before Spain there was Catalunya, a thriving maritime empire with its own language and Barcelona as its capital, last bastion of resistance to Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Exploring 2000 of the city's history, Robert Hughes takes us down the Ramblas, through the "intestinal windings" of the ancient Gothic Quarter, past the bountiful Boqueria market to the Eixample, showcase of the daring, mannered architecture of Catalan modernisme, before resting at Gaudí's celebrated Sagrada Familia: crazy, unfinished symbol of this fiercely independent city of extremes."The pace is brisk, the narrative grasp cool, firm and confident . . . Hughes' prose has the 'capriciousness, symbolic precision and stylistic punch' he attributes to Catalan moustaches" HILARY SPURLING, Daily Telegraph"Nobody has ever represented Catalonia's character more powerfully, or illustrated its claims to self-destiny more persuasively, than Robert Hughes in this monumental work" JAN MORRISTrade ReviewNobody has ever represented [Barcelona's] character more powerfully, or illustrated its claims to self-destiny more persuasively, than has Robert Hughes in this monumental work -- Jan Morris * Los Angeles Times *Whether untangling the unlikely legends of Wilfred the Hairy or tangling with the likes of Antoni Gaudi, Hughes has shaped Catalan art, architecture and politics into the ultimate guidebooks -- David Newnham * Guardian *A wonderful book, by far the best yet to have appeared in the current flood of books on Spain - and one that fills a genuine gap -- Martin Gayford * Sunday Telegraph *Barcelona is unlikely to be rewarded with a better history than this. Robert Hughes is a master of the big canvas, scooping up the detail of social, economic, political and artistic life and producing images of captivating richness * Sunday Times *

John Adamson Publishing Consultants Footloose in France: 2023
Book SynopsisThe book begins by the North Sea. It is a late summer's afternoon, and a bright sun has dispersed the greyness of the day. Two Englishmen are enjoying a swim off the Essex coast when all at once both have the feeling that they are back at the French seaside. They find themselves starting to tell each other of their youthful experiences of living in France. The adventures they narrate follow one after another like waves rolling onto the shore. Clive, coming from London, had found himself spending a year deep in the French countryside within sight of the western Pyrenees; John, hailing from Devon, had ended up living for a while in the City of Light within sight of the Folies Bergere. Outsiders though they were, they momentarily became part of French society, their adventures fuelled by the culinary delights of their adopted land. They tell their tales with humour and relish as they recall their initiation into the French way of life of decades ago - and how it shaped their own.Trade Review"I predict this slim volume will become a quiet best seller. It has all the quirky fun of an authentic adventure, a trove of fascinating real-life tales - whilst it reveals the real France in all its remarkable differentness." -- Anne Garvey, Cambridge Critique; "The incidents and experiences [the authors] relate are very sympathetic to me, and induce a measure of nostalgia." -- Sir Quentin BlakeTable of ContentsFrontispiece; Prologue; 1.
