  • Lima: Architectural Guide

    DOM Publishers Lima: Architectural Guide

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisLima has many more sunny days than its inhabitants claim. The urban layout of its historic centre – the famous checkerboard – is the most perfect Cartesian grid in South America, yet the suburbs are the global capital of informality. Lima society lives in a permanent state of commercial frenzy, yet it has preserved the oldest traditions in the continent. The best-known works of architecture are viceregal and republican, yet pre-Columbian ruins are scattered around the city in a manner that can only be found elsewhere in Cairo. Its modern movement is more cheerful than that of the old continent, midway between Brazil and California. And the invasions, a heterodox and radical phenomenon, have generated an astonishing form of urban development. The book describes more than 160 works, organised in routes that range from the territorial to the neighbourhood scale and are designed to explore the city by boat, car, train, bus, bicycle or on foot. It covers the predominant styles of architecture in each period as well as the remains of the pre-existing landscape and the infrastructures that articulate the city today. Interspersed in the texts are references to the civilising mechanisms that have underpinned the construction of the works, the economic activities that have made them possible, and their public administration. Until now, Lima has shown the world a gloomy, unattractive ambience. Herman Melville described it as 'the strangest, saddest city thou can'st see', César Moro as 'Lima la horrible', and Héctor Velarde as 'Lima la gris'. This guide offers a different picture, one of a vibrant, cheerful and insanely glorious city, with bright colour photographs inviting visitors and residents to see it in a new light.

  • Kyiv: Architectural Guide. 100 Iconic Buildings

DOM Publishers Kyiv: Architectural Guide. 100 Iconic Buildings

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the Euromaidan, Kyiv has been the place where Europe‘s future is decided between East and West. Meanwhile, the hybrid war in eastern Ukraine and on the Crimean peninsula has escalated into an open Russian war of aggression. Significant buildings in the capital Kyiv and vital infrastructure has come under fire. The Kyiv Architectural Guide presents over 100 buildings worth seeing from 100 years of the city‘s history, compiled by Ukrainian architectural historian Semen Shyrochyn. The typical residential complexes of avant-garde architecture, the imposing palaces of the Stalin era, the iconic designs of Soviet modernism, as well as the most significant construction projects built since independence are also expertly presented. In over 300 pages, this architectural guide proves that Kyiv is much more than the capital of Ukraine. Kyiv is an inseparable part of the European community of nations, where mutual respect of values counts more than the power of the strongest. This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty on 24 February 2022.

Book SynopsisThis alternative guidebook for one of the world's most popular tourist destinations explores all five boroughs to reveal a people's New York City. The sites and stories of A People's Guide to New York City shift our perception of what defines New York, placing the passion, determination, defeats, and victories of its people at the core. Delving into the histories of New York's five boroughs, you will encounter enslaved Africans in revolt, women marching for equality, workers on strike, musicians and performers claiming streets for their art, and neighbors organizing against landfills and industrial toxins and in support of affordable housing and public schools. The streetscapes that emerge from these groups' struggles bear the traces, and this book shows you where to look to find them. New York City is a preeminent global city, serving as the headquarters for hundreds of multinational firms and a world-renowned cultural hub for fashion, art, and music. • Politics of Washing

The Crowood Press Ltd Politics of Washing

Book SynopsisThe beautiful city of Venice has been a fantasy land for people from around the globe for centuries, but when Polly Coles and her family left England for Venice, they discovered a city caught between modern and ancient life. The Politics of Washing is a fascinating window into the strange and unique place Venetians call home.Trade Review'No one should go to Venice without reading this book.' Blueguides.com 'No book as thoughtful, perceptive and humane on Venice...has appeared since William Dean Howells wrote his Venetian Life in 1886.' -- Jonathan Keates Times Literary Supplement 'More cerebral than most Venetian travelogues or fictions...Coles clearly has ample knowledge but also the wit to have travelled light.' -- Caroline Jackson The Spectator 'Eloquent.' The New York Times 'A riveting account of ordinary life in an extraordinary place, packed with charming anecdotes that will have readers hooked on Venetian life.' -- Woodburn Independent 'The Politics of Washing is a readable memoir, at times funny, enjoyable, and feels very real.' Luxury Reading 'A funny, humbling tale of one family's attempt to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.' Cayocosta72 Book Reviews Paul White, deputy vice-chancellor, University of Sheffield, is reading Polly Coles' The Politics of Washing: Real Life in Venice (Robert Hale, 2013). "Coles' background is in teaching and anthropology, and she recently moved with her family (including her Italian husband) to Venice. Here she brilliantly unmasks the prejudices and idiosyncrasies of the Venetians themselves, as well as mass tourism's impact on the city. Coping with Italian bureaucracy is never easy, but the added complexities of formal and informal rules governing life in a city that is slowly dying as a real place of residence are fascinating. Recommended for anyone about to visit or revisit Venice: I've been there many times and I now see the city in new ways." -- Paul White Times Higher Education

Book SynopsisCovering 500 years of Ghana's history, The Ghana Reader provides a multitude of historical, political, and cultural perspectives on this important West African nation, emphasizing Ghana's enormous symbolic and pragmatic value to global relations and its ethnic and cultural diversity. Trade Review"Konadu and Campbell have edited a volume that traces the complexity of Ghana, and its overall representation of a stable African state, in a series of short but insightful entries. . . . The editors have done an excellent job in allowing all sections of Ghana, from farmers, slave traders, and intellectuals to imperialists, to speak and thereby represent Ghana’s evolution to a modern nation-state that exemplifies the challenges and opportunities that face not only Ghana, but all of Africa. Highly recommended. All levels/libraries." -- T. M. Reese * Choice *"There is no doubt that The Ghana Reader's rare documents and publications are indispensable to the understanding of Ghana's historical, cultural, and political narrative.... The Ghana Reader is a treasure trove of information." -- Kwaku Nti * Journal of Global South Studies *"[A] wonderful introduction to Ghana and its people, stretching all the way back to prehistoric times. Opening this book to virtually any page yields a judiciously selected text that reveals something about Ghana. . . ." -- Nicolas van de Walle * Foreign Affairs *"Overall the selection and presentation of texts works very well in the rich collection. Its readability is strengthened by the editors’ introduction, helpful outlines prior to each of the sub themes, suggestions for further reading, sources, and an index. The collection will appeal to casual readers of cultural or touristic persuasions, who will undoubtedly find something of interest to pursue further, as well as students and scholars of Ghana or sub-Saharan Africa.... [T]he aims of the Reader are accomplished well and it thoroughly succeeds in providing varied and contrasting illuminations of the country we know today as Ghana." -- Paul Stacey * African Studies Quarterly *"A celebration of the dynamism, complexity, and allure of Ghana. . . . The book appeals to a broad range of disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and is exemplary of the kind of text that can foster transdisciplinary teaching and scholarship. It is written in a style that is accessible to an undergraduate audience but is also appropriate for graduate education, and will appeal to those that seek to better understand a country with a fascinating and multifaceted history, politics, and culture." -- Jacqueline Ignatova * African and Black Diaspora *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments xiii Introduction 1 I. Book SynopsisBirds of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao is the essential guide for anyone traveling to those islands. It showcases the more than 280 species seen on Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao and provides descriptions of and directions to the best places to bird, from the famous white sand beaches to hidden watering holes to the majestic national parks.Trade ReviewThis guide to the more than 280 bird species seen on Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao is accessible to both beginners and experts. In this work that serves as both a site guide and a field guide to the islands' birds, readers will find excellent maps and illustrations along with detailed bird descriptions. The section on conservation adds awareness of the threats to the birds and to the habitats on which they rely. This reliable and enjoyable resource is recommended to public libraries. -- Thomas E. Baker * American Reference Books Annual *The authors are professional musicians(!), obviously accomplished birders, and well-published authors, and they have produced a really nice book here—although it is not typical of many modern guides. The first 95 pages present detailed information for finding the best birding areas on each island, as well as available amenities (which is very helpful). Approximately 280 species of birds occur in the area, and these are listed and discussed in the middle 190 pages, a considerable departure from text and illustrations occurring on the same page. Species discussions include a brief description, mention of similar species, conservation status, and known range. Following the discussions, 59 attractive color plates contain paintings of all species. The final few pages consider bird conservation on the islands. This book is an absolute must for birders traveling to the islands, but the restricted coverage area will limit desirability for many North American libraries, except those with extensive ornithological holdings. * Choice *Table of ContentsIntroductionThe IslandsSite GuideAnatomical FeaturesSpecies AccountsColor PlatesBird ConservationAnnotated List of Species
