Octopus Publishing Group Riding Out: A Journey of Love, Loss and New
Book Synopsis“A truly inspiring journey that celebrates the healing power of adventure. A must-read.” – Levison Wood “Wonderfully relatable on so many levels. Simon’s wanderlust, mental roller coaster and reactions to a fast-changing world had me enthralled in his journey, but very much reflecting on my own over the past few years. A brilliantly crafted book which holds a mirror up to the world we live in.” - Mark Beaumont "Simon’s cycle ride around his own country is a fine demonstration that adventure and transformation begins on your own doorstep.” - Alastair Humphreys The remarkable and inspirational true story of how one man battled grief and anxiety, one pedal stroke at a time, on a 3,500-mile adventure around Britain In March 2020, as Britain entered its first lockdown, Simon Parker’s life fell apart; his travel journalism career vanished overnight and shortly afterwards he received the tragic news that a close friend had died. With a long-suppressed anxiety disorder starting to rear its head, he turned to the only therapies he knew and trusted: travel and exercise. Setting off on his bike from the northernmost point of Shetland with only a sleeping bag and a camping stove, Simon would end up cycling 3,427 miles around Britain. En route, he would meet hundreds of resilient Britons, who were all, in their own way, riding out the storm just like he was. Even in his gloomiest moments he began to see that a chink of light was never too far away. Riding Out is a story of optimism and hope, and a ground-level portrait of Britain as it transforms from a country in crisis to a nation on the mend. From Shetland to the Scillies, Dover to Durness, Simon learns that life’s sharpest corners are best navigated at the gentle pace of a bicycle.Trade ReviewIf you've recently bought a 'lockdown bike' and realise you've not been using it enough, this inspirational, down-to-earth and touching book may give you a few ideas. * Tom Chesshyre *Simon's cycle ride around his own country is a fine demonstration that adventure and transformation begins on your own doorstep. * Alastair Humphreys *[Riding Out is] both hugely inspirational yet still relatable... Simon's vulnerability at times will show many readers - myself included - that they aren't alone in feeling lost these past 18 months. How he has managed this vulnerability with humour throughout the book drew me in, as did his ability to capture the spirit of the people he met along the way. His ability to describe challenging moments with honesty makes it feel like you're hearing an old friend regale the trip over dinner. * Alex Outhwaite *A truly inspiring journey that celebrates the healing power of adventure. A must-read. * Levison Wood *In Riding Out, Simon Parker holds a humane mirror to a fractured Britain as it adjusts to a strange, isolated new world. * Jon Dunn, author of The Glitter in the Green *Wonderfully relatable on so many levels. Simon's wanderlust, mental roller coaster and reactions to a fast-changing world had me enthralled in his journey, but very much reflecting on my own over the past few years. A brilliantly crafted book which holds a mirror up to the world we live in. * Mark Beaumont *

Granta Books Finding George Orwell in Burma
Book SynopsisIn this intrepid and brilliant memoir, Emma Larkin tells of the year she spent travelling through Burma, using as a compass the life and work of George Orwell, whom many of Burma's underground teahouse intellectuals call simply "the prophet". In stirring, insightful prose, she provides a powerful reckoning with one of the world's least free countries. Finding George Orwell in Burma is a brave and revelatory reconnaissance of modern Burma, one of the world's grimmest and most shuttered dictatorships, where the term "Orwellian" aptly describes the life endured by the country's people. This book has come to be regarded as a classic of reportage and travel and a crucial book for anyone interested in Burma and George Orwell.

Cicerone Press Spain's Sendero Historico: The GR1: Northern
Book SynopsisThe GR1 (Sendero Historico) is a long traverse of northern Spain from west to east over 1250km of remote country and mountain walking. The waymarked route runs through the Pyrenean foothills from Puerto de Tarna at the western end to near L'Escala on the Mediterranean coast. Arguably one of Spain's best long-distance paths, it follows gently graded paths, making a long but easy walk suitable for a reasonably fit walker. The complete trail requires around 53 days to complete end to end, but the guidebook splits the route into 7 sections, each with a start or endpoint that can be easily reached by train or bus, allowing walkers to explore the route in manageable chunks. The guidebook also describes how to extend the route to Finisterre and the Atlantic using GR routes. Providing all the information you will need, the guide combines practical information about planning your own itinerary, when to go, cuisine and terrain with general information about the varied geology and history of the area. Route description is accompanied by contoured mapping and stage and section summary information, as well as detailed information about any accommodation available en route.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Introduction Topography of the route Climate and vegetation Agriculture and wildlife History What the trails are like Staying in Spain Eating in Spain When to go Breaking the GR1 into chunks Planning your walk What to take Finding your way Using this guide The Sendero Historico 1 Puerto de Tarna to Reinosa Stage 1 Puerto de Tarna to Salamon Stage 2 Salamon to Prioro Stage 3 Prioro to Camporredondo de Alba Stage 4 Camporredondo de Alba to Cervera de Pisuerga Stage 5 Cervera de Pisuerga to Brañosera Stage 6 Brañosera to Reinosa 2 Corconte to Berantevilla Stage 1 Corconte to Pedrosa de Valdeporres Stage 2 Pedrosa de Valdeporres to Salazar Stage 3 Salazar to Paresotas Stage 4 Paresotas to Bóveda Stage 5 Bóveda to Espejo Stage 6 Espejo to Fontecha Stage 7 Fontecha to Berantevilla 3 Berantevilla to Olite Stage 1 Berantevilla to Peñacerrada Stage 2 Peñacerrada to Bernedo Stage 3 Bernedo to Santa Cruz de Campezo Stage 4 Santa Cruz de Campezo to Los Arcos Stage 5 Los Arcos to Larraga Stage 6 Larrage to Olite 4 Olite to Murillo de G#xe1;llego Stage 1 Olite to Uju#xe9; Stage 2 Uju#xe9; to Sos del Rey Católico Stage 3 Sos del Rey Católico to Petilla de Aragón Stage 4 Petilla de Aragón to Biel Stage 5 Biel to Murillo de G#xe1;llego 5 Murillo de G#xe1;llego to Graus Stage 1 Murillo de G#xe1;llego to Loarre Stage 2 Loarre to Bolea Stage 3 Bolea to Arguis Stage 4 Arguis to Nocito Stage 5 Nocito to Paúles de Sarsa Stage 6 Paúles de Sarsa to Ligüerre de Cinca Stage 7 Ligüerre de Cinca to Tierrantona Stage 8 Tierrantona to Salinas de Trillo Stage 9 Salinas de Trillo to Graus 6 Graus to Gironella Stage 1 Graus to Lascuarre Stage 2 Lascuarre to Puente de Montañana Stage 3 Puente de Montañana to Àger Stage 4 Àger to Hostal Roig Stage 5 Hostal Roig to Messan#xe9;s Stage 6 Massan#xe9;s to Oliana Stage 7 Oliana to Cambrils Stage 8 Cambrils to Sant Llorenç de Morunys Stage 9 Sant Llorenç de Morunys to Sant Lleïr de la Vall d'Ora Stage 10 Sant Lleïr de la Vall d'Ora to L'Espunyola Stage 11 L'Espunyola to Gironella 7 From Gironella to the coast Stage 1 Gironella to Lluç#xe0; Stage 2 Lluç#xe0; to Alpens Stage 3 Alpens to Ripoll Stage 4 Ripoll to Sant Pau de Segúries Stage 5 Sant Pau de Segúries to Oix Stage 6 Oix to Besalú Stage 7 Besalú to Banyoles Stage 8 Banyoles to Orriols Stage 9 Orriols to Sant Martí d'Empúries Appendix A Route summary tables Appendix B A Spanish coast-to-coast Appendix C Useful contacts

Sunflower Books Slovenia and the Julian Alps Sunflower Guide: 75
Book SynopsisThe go-to Slovenia travel guide travel guide for discovering the best walks and car tours. Strap on your boots and discover Slovenia on foot with the Sunflower Slovenia travel guide. And on the days when your feet may have had enough, enjoy some spectacular scenery on one of our legendary car tours. The Sunflower Slovenia guide is indispensable for hiking in Slovenia or seeing Slovenia by car. ‘Small is beautiful’ certainly applies to Slovenia, which is only half the size of Switzerland. With a population of just two million, the landscape is still essentially rural. The jagged snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps contrast with fertile valleys, full of colour and activity. Porous limestone rock has created the karst landscape; typical features can be seen everywhere and are exciting to explore — from underground rivers emerging as cascading waterfalls to narrow gorges, caves and rock arches. The mountain valleys are immaculate, with strips of vegetables and corn amidst the hayfields and orchards. There are hop-growing areas and beautiful vineyards. Amongst these industrious people one senses an orderly contentment and a feeling that everything is in tune with nature. Tour Slovenia by car or on foot; the opportunities are endless. This book covers the whole country except for the very northeast and southeast; there is an emphasis on the Julian Alps, with a large-scale touring map. Whatever your age or ability we’ve got some glorious walks and car tours to ensure you have a memorable holiday in Slovenia. Inside the Sunflower Slovenia guide book you’ll find: * 75 long and short walks for all ages and abilities – each walk is graded so you can easily match your ability to the level of walk * Topographical walking maps – give you a clear sense of the surrounding terrain * Free downloadable gps tracks – for the techies * Satnav guidance to walk starts for motorists * 6 car tours and fold-out touring map – for easy reference on your tour * Strolls to idyllic picnic spots – enjoy our recommendations for where to picnic along the way * Timetables for public transport – ideal if you want to link two walks or avoid hiring a car on your holiday * Online update service for the latest information Whether you tour the island by car or explore on foot, we look forward to showing you around.

September Publishing A Ride Across America
Book SynopsisAs a child Simon Parker had always thought of America as the golden land. A place of adventure, culture, innovation, progress and independence. Despite one botched attempt (he blames the weather) he had never explored it as fully as he wanted. Frustrated by the shallow headlines focusing only on Trump, guns and divisions, Simon Parker decided it was now or never. He wanted to see if the America of his teenage dreams existed. If he wanted to explore the roads of the remaining wildernesses, meet ordinary people behind the click-bait news posts, then this year - before the 2024 election - was the year to do it. Travelling at a cyclist''s pace, tag teamed by inquisitive birds of prey, staying with old acquaintances in towns and farmlands, visiting rodeos, churches, cook-outs and diners he found a land and a people of huge generosity, but also of both immense consumption, poverty and disenfranchisement. A land whose portrayal become vastly over-simplified and underestimated. A fascinating - and frequently funny - tale of one man cycling the breadth of America.
