John Murray Press The Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount
Book SynopsisThe long-awaited final volume of the trilogy by Patrick Leigh Fermor. A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water were the first two volumes in a projected trilogy that would describe the walk that Patrick Leigh Fermor undertook at the age of eighteen from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. 'When are you going to finish Vol. III?' was the cry from his fans; but although he wished he could, the words refused to come. The curious thing was that he had not only written an early draft of the last part of the walk, but that it predated the other two. It remains unfinished but The Broken Road - edited and introduced by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper - completes an extraordinary journey.Trade ReviewNobody could do the job better than the book's editors. Colin Thubron is a travel writer of Leigh Fermor's calibre, Artemis Cooper is his masterly biographer . . . It contains wonderful passages of purest Leigh Fermor . . . Time and again he gives us vivid glimpses of encounters along the way - priests and peasants, the squalors of the back country, high life in Bucharest - and this virtuoso display is embedded as always in his astonishing range of learning . . . full of fun, kindness, easy learning, sophistication and innocence . . . a gently fitting conclusion to his tumultuous masterpiece -- Jan Morris * Mail on Sunday *This is a major work. It confirms that Leigh Fermor was, along with Robert Byron, the greatest travel writer of his generation, and this final volume assures the place of the trilogy as one of the masterpieces of the genre, indeed one of the masterworks of post-war English non-fiction -- William Dalrymple * Guardian *Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper have put this book to bed with skill and sensitivity . . . Friends and fans, acolytes, devotees and disciples can all rest easy. It was worth the wait -- Justin Marozzi * Spectator *The editors have done a fine job * Literary Review *It is magnificent. Cooper and Thubron have done an immense service in bringing the book to publication, for it unmistakably stands comparison with its remarkable siblings. The prose has the glorious turbulence and boil of the first two books, and the youthful magic of his 'dream-odyssey' is still potent * Robert MacFarlane, The Times *A fitting conclusion to his masterpiece . . . This book is momentous * Mail on Sunday *The pages are filled with brilliant evocations of his life on the road, none richer than the time he spent in a Romanian broth . . . It is a fitting epilogue to 20th-century travel-writing and essential reading for devotees of Sir Patrick's other works * The Economist *I set off along The Broken Road laden with expectations that I would have to make allowances. Yet almost from the off, I realised that I would have no use for these. Here was a wealth of descriptions that only Leigh Fermor could have conjured up . . . In a stroke of brilliance, Thubron and Cooper have included the separate diary that Leigh Fermor kept of the month he spent exploring Mount Athos in Greece immediately after leaving Istanbul. So, the Athos diary, aglow with rich experience, finally brings the journey to its rightful end in the spiritual heart of the country that was to prove, though the young author did not yet know it, Leigh Fermor's "real love and destination" * New Statesman *This is a picaresque essay, a virtuoso tapestry of anecdote in the author's best tradition * Country Life *The first two volumes were a joy to read, not least for Leigh Fermor's ability to recapture in later life the intense excitement of being a young man lighting out. The latest book offers similar joys . . . Also evident are another of the joys of the earlier books - the pyrotechnics of his writing. Exuberance is expressed in heightened suggestions . . . it captures the joy of the open road, the fresh view he gives of Europe as it began to show the stresses that led to world war, and the glimpses of a long-lost life and innocence * Observer *The Mount Athos diary - untampered with by his older self - reminds us what an extraordinary young man he was . . . This early style is more immediate, more youthful; a pleasure to read in a wholly different way from the later magnificence * Financial Times *A road trip that is as illuminating as it is incomplete made by a traveller, warrior and jewelled stylist * Independent *There is plenty to enjoy, so much so that the reader often forgets to wonder how much is true, and how much the revisionist work of an inventive and poetic mind . . . the pleasure lies in its combination of erudition, exuberant speculation, lively anecdote and meticulous, picture-painting language . . . Gorgeous imagery, granted, yet it is in Leigh Fermor's disarming cameos that The Broken Road excels * Sunday Times *His literary executors have topped, tailed and polished with such sympathy and skill that their interventions cannot be detected. This is pure Paddy: these are his feelings, perceptions and responses, his the observations, his the descriptions, consummate in a phrase, acute and intense when extended to paragraph or page; this is his style yet it is in many ways a youthful text, its core the adventure of a very young man, its embellishments the experience, curiosity and wisdom of his older self * Evening Standard *What a poignant and somehow fitting finale for a legendary procrastinator. It was certainly worth the wait * National *This final leg, through Romania and Bulgaria rounds off a classic trilogy * i *For readers of the other two books, to see the odyssey at last (almost) concluded, will naturally be irresistible. For everyone else there is the discovery of a unique writer * Sunday Express *The final volume confirms the trilogy as one of the 'masterpieces' of English travel writing * Week *A scintillating continuation of the prodigious walk that took the young Leigh Fermor right into the heart of magically different pre-war Europe and beyond . . . his journey is complete, his world task accomplished, with the whole undertaking as thick in marvels as Aladdin's cave * Irish Times *The perfect present for anyone with wanderlust * Good Housekeeping *The third unfinished volume of Leigh Fermor's enchanted journey through Mitteleuropa is here at last * TLS Books of the Year *Glorious . . . Artemis Cooper and Colin Thubron created THE BROKEN ROAD from a rejected essay on walking (15 times the size requested of Paddy), some failed drafts and a pair of flimsy travel journals. But the author is arguably more present in their loving editorial hands . . . than in any of his other books. There is also that infectious enthusiasm for the road and the lived experience, for spoken language, oral knowledge and for everything Byzantine and Greek * Daily Telegraph, Best Books of the Year *His epic journey's erudite conclusion will not disappoint his many fans * Saga *Offers a fascinating glimpse of a lost time and talent * Financial Times, Books of the Year *My favourite book this year was the final, unfinished and posthumous volume of Patrick Leigh Fermor's walking trilogy . . . it is every bit as masterly as Between the Woods and the Water * Observer, Books of the Year *Glorious . . . Artemis Cooper and Colin Thubron created The Broken Road . . . but the author is arguably more present in their loving editorial hands . . . than in any of his other books. There is also that infectious enthusiasm for the road and the lived experience, for spoken language, oral knowledge and for everything Byzantine and Greek * Daily Telegraph, Books of the Year *Offers a fascinating glimpse of a lost time and talent * Financial Times, Books of the Year *Its rich depictions and liquid language make this a masterpiece to savour * Sunday Express *In magnificent prose [Patrick Leigh Fermor] describes liaisons with countesses in crumbling castles, changing landscapes, now lost forever, and the delight of a young man with nothing but himself and his quest for adventure. Travel writing at its most sublime * Daily Express *His award-winning biographer Artemis Cooper and travel writer Colin Thubron have painstakingly and sensitively worked on Paddy's draft of the final leg of his epic journey and ghosted a wonderful account of his swashbuckling journey . . . It conjures up a life that's unimaginable in more cautious modern times and is beautifully written * Daily Mail *Like many really good things, it's hard to say why The Broken Road, the final volume of Patrick Leigh Fermor's account of his walk from Holland to Constantinople, is so satisfying. But it is * Mail on Sunday *

Book SynopsisOne icon meets another: For true automotive enthusiasts, it was no surprise that the paths of Aston Martin and René Staud would cross at some point. The British brand’s meteoric success story began almost exactly 110 years ago. Its claim of building road-ready racing cars has always remained intact. In this new edition of the best-selling book, multiple award-winning automotive photographer René Staud presents breathtaking new photographs of both old and present-day models — even those knowledgeable about the brand will discover stories not yet heard. Text in English and German.Trade Review"A book of which we are very proud to present, the cream of the crop, is dedicated to DB models like David Brown who relaunched the brand with legendary cars like James Bond's DB5." - Playboy France

Pan Macmillan Exile on Front Street: My Life as a Hells Angel
Book SynopsisSo many days I felt like a god, drunk with freedom and power, riding a motorcycle I’d crafted with my own two hands with that winged skull on my back. George Christie was president of the notorious Ventura charter of the Hells Angels for three decades. While Sonny Barger was the club’s reckless leader, George was the negotiator, the spokesman. In Exile on Front Street he takes us on an action-packed ride through his years as a Hells Angel, from the bloody brawl that started the war with the Mongols to learning that a contract had been taken out on him by the head of the Outlaws. He describes the brotherhood and the betrayals, being targeted by the Feds and his stretches in prison. He also reveals how the club changed, why he decided to leave for the sake of his family and how the leadership turned on him. Now Christie has decided to set the record straight in this hard-hitting account of what it means to be a Hells Angel through good times and bad.

Bergverlag Rudolf Rother La Palma walking guide 71 walks: 2020
Book SynopsisThe greenest of the Canary Islands awaits the walker with more variety of landscapes than can be found in any other similarly small region in the world. Wide valleys, wild gorges and crater landscapes, pine- and laurel forests, banana plantations, cascades and waterfalls form a rich contrast with one another. The walking here is superb and the dark-black beaches, beautiful as they are, pale into insignificance in comparison to the offerings of nature which in all corners of the island surprise you with ever-changing scenery. The island offers incomparably pleasant strolls between gleaming lava beaches, lush laurel woods and cloud-ringed ridges. And ever-present is the deep blue Atlantic. La Palma is made for the walker who loves nature and seeks adventures away from the noisy beach resorts and cheap tourist attractions. This guide presents the walker with a wide range of enjoyable walks incorporating every region on the island: from physically demanding excursions into the rugged barrancos in the north to the romantic scenery of the setting sun on the 2000 metre peaks, not to mention the truly phenomenal volcano route; from gentle walks through bright green pine forests and across dark lava streams to the most spectacular destination on the island: the giant unspoilt landscape of the Caldera de Taburiente, surrounded by thousand metre high precipices, one of the greatest erosion craters in the world. This Rother guide is the most comprehensive and popular walking guide to La Palma and has been the definitive guide for many years. The present edition has been totally revised and now extended to include 69 walks an all-round successful guide, excellently illustrated with maps (scale 1:50,000), which will arouse your curiosity and can be highly recommended to all mountain lovers on La Palma.

Orion Publishing Co And On That Bombshell
Book Synopsis I was Top Gear''s script editor for 13 years and all 22 series. I basically used to check spelling and think of stupid gags about The Stig. I also got to hang around with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. It didn''t feel like something you should get paid for. From the disastrous pilot show of 2002 to the sudden and unexpected ending in 2015, working on Top Gear was quite a rollercoaster ride. We crossed continents, we made space ships, we bobbed across the world''s busiest shipping lane in a pick-up truck. We also got chased by an angry mob, repeatedly sparked fury in newspapers, and almost killed one of our presenters. I realised that I had quite a few stories to tell from behind the scenes on the show. I remembered whose daft idea it was to get a dog. I recalled the willfully stupid way in which we decorated our horrible office. I had a sudden flashback to the time a Bolivian drug lord threatened to kill us. Muswell Press Mermaid Singing
Book SynopsisIn 1951 the Australian writers Charmian Clift and George Johnston left grey, post-war London for Greece. Settling first on the tiny island of Kalymnos, then Hydra, their plan was to live simply and focus on their writing, away from the noise of the big city. The result is two of Charmian Clift's best known and most loved books, the memoirs Mermaid Singing and Peel Me a Lotus. Mermaid Singing relays the culture shock and the sheer delight of their first year on the tiny sponge-fishing island of Kalymnos. Clift paints an evocative picture of the characters and sun-drenched rhythms of traditional life, long before backpackers and mass tourism descended. On Hydra, featured in the companion volume, Peel Me a Lotus, Clift and Johnston became the centre of an informal community of artists and writers including the then unknown Leonard Cohen who lodged with them, and his future girlfriend Marianne Ihlen.Trade Review'These are blissful reissues that will bring Grecian heat and light to your life, and much more besides' Editor's Travel Choice. The Crowood Press Ltd Lotus Elise and Exige 1995-2020: The Complete
Book SynopsisNamed after Elisa, the granddaughter of Lotus's owner at the time, Romano Artioli of Bugatti fame, the Lotus Elise was launched at the Frankfurt Show in 1995. In the subsequent twenty-five years it has not only established itself as the embodiment of what Lotus stands for, it retains a unique place in the international sports car market. No other manufacturer came up with a car to seriously rival the Elise, nor the Exige, in terms of handling dexterity on both road and racetrack, and it aptly characterizes the definition of a sports car. Written in Johnny Tipler's inimitable style this book includes a detailed evolution of the Elise and Exige, including full specification tables; interviews with key individuals involved in their design and development, including Richard Rackham, Gavan Kershaw, Neil Thomas, Russell Carr, Barney Hatt and Andy Pleavin; Elisa Artioli on her namesake, its past and future; motor sport adaptions and successes and finally, driving experiences on road and track. The production of the Elise and Exige was sustained through four corporate upheavals. Now in Geely ownership, the future for Lotus looks bright.Trade ReviewFor those of you who worship at the Lotus Elise and Exige altar - Hallelujah - your King Johnny Bible has arrived. White Star Legendary Sailboats
Book SynopsisThrough an extraordinary selection from the Beken Marine Photography Archive of the work of four generations of famous photographers (the Beken family), this book retraces the fundamental stages of the evolution of the unsurpassable 'Beken style', bringing together some of the most artistic images of sailboats ever shot. These wonderful and legendary pictures, accompanied by detailed texts and plentiful information, will lead the reader through time, to discover the wonderful world of yachting photography. The Bekens began their love affair with marine photography in 1888, when Alfred Edward (1855–1915) moved from Canterbury (Kent) to the Isle of Wight with his son Frank (1880–1970). He purchased a pharmacy in Birmingham Road in the seaport of Cowes, a town that was already famous for international yacht racing and for the world's oldest regular regatta, the renowned Cowes Week. Alfred and young Frank started shooting photographs to capture sailing yachts at their best, and racing yachts in action, a real challenge at that time as it still is today. These beautiful photographs started being sold in the pharmacy as souvenirs, and in the space of a few years they would have caught the attention of the world of yacht racing and sailing aficionados, earning the Beken family a large number of followers all over the world for the extraordinary quality of their images. Queen Victoria, King George V, and most recently the Duke of Edinburgh awarded the company a Royal Warrant for excellence. Frank's artistic inheritance was carried on by his son Keith (1914– 2007), who succeeded him in the creation of fantastic sailboats photographs. Today, Kenneth Beken (b. 1951, the fourth in the line of family photographers), together with yacht master Peter Mumford, is leading the way in the latest digital photography, and creating wonderful colour images: "Now that digital cameras and printers are as good as the traditional darkroom methods," he says, "the company has gone totally digital." Today the Beken Marine Photography Archive features more than 200,000 different photographs of incalculable value, from historical monochrome masterpieces to contemporary digital images of the highest quality and technical perfection.

Bradt Travel Guides Lapland
Book SynopsisThis thoroughly updated fourth edition of Bradt's Lapland is the only standalone guidebook in English to this wintry wonderland, a region spanning the northernmost fringes of Norway, Sweden and Finland where there are as many reindeer as people, it never gets dark in summer and never gets light in mid-winter. In this new edition, expert author James Proctor covers all the latest developments, including the most up-to-date information on where to see the Northern Lights (Lapland is the best region in the world for Northern Lights viewing) and where to go husky sledding, reviews of the treehouse hotels which have sprung up across the region, the latest details of how to fly directly to one of the Europe's most far-flung destinations from the UK and USA, plus information on a wide range of summer and winter adventures, from hiking and wild swimming to snowmobiling, wilderness stays and staying in the Icehotel. Everybody has heard of Lapland. Everybody knows it's the home of Father Christmas. Yet remarkably few people can accurately pinpoint Lapland on a map. Bradt's Lapland lifts the lid off this little-known, enigmatic region and shows that there's much more to Lapland than the man with the long white beard and the red suit. This is a land of elemental beauty with plenty to offer anyone who's looking to explore the great outdoors without the great crowds. Lapland is vast and empty, a place of indigenous villages, sweeping forests, mighty waterfalls - the raw side of nature here is the region's defining and inescapable characteristic and no visit is complete without leaving the creature comforts of the nearest town well behind. Whether on an organized tour or travelling independently, Bradt's Lapland is the essential travel companion.Table of ContentsContents Introduction The Bradt definition of Lapland - and its origins PART ONE GENERAL INFORMATION Chapter 1 Background Information Geography and climate, Natural history, History, Government and politics, Sámi economy, People, Language, Religion and mythology, Culture Chapter 2 Practical Information When to visit, Highlights - and distances, Suggested itineraries, Tour operators, Red tape, Getting there and away, Health, Safety, What to take, Money and budgeting, Getting around, Accommodation, Eating and drinking, Public holidays and festivals, Shopping, Arts and entertainment, Photography, Media and communications, Time 39, Cultural etiquette PART TWO THE GUIDE Chapter 3 Swedish Lapland: Luleå to Riksgränsen Luleå, Boden, Harads and Treehotel, Storforsen Rapids, Arvidsjaur, Arjeplog, Northwest to Jäkkvik and Vuoggatjålme, Jokkmokk, Gällivare, Ritsem and the Stora Sjöfallet National Park, Kiruna, Icehotel and Jukkasjärvi, Abisko and around Chapter 4 Narvik and the Islands Narvik, The islands: Vesterålen and Lofoten Chapter 5 From the Gulf of Bothnia to the Arctic Ocean Tornio, Haparanda and around, Pajala and around, Muonio and around, Kaaresuvanto and Karesuando, Kilpisjärvi and Treriksröset Chapter 6 Finnish Lapland: Rovaniemi to the Finnmark Plateau Rovaniemi and around, Northwest from Rovaniemi: towards Kautokeino, Kautokeino, Northeast from Rovaniemi: towards Inari and Karasjok, Inari and around, North from Inari: Kaamanen, Utsjoki and Karasjok, East from Rovaniemi Chapter 7 Norwegian Lapland: Tromsø to Kirkenes Tromsø, Alta and around, Hammerfest, Towards the North Cape, North Cape, Moving on from the North Cape: towards Kirkenes, Kirkenes Appendix 1 Language Appendix 2 Glossary of Finnish, Norwegian, Sámi and Swedish terms Appendix 3 Further Information Index
