At the start of World War I, the Royal Navy's forces were amalgamated into a single entity, the Grand Fleet, and stationed in Scapa Flow, Orkney. In 1917 it was reinforced further by a powerful American squadron. In this book, based on extensive primary source research, naval expert Angus Konstam assesses the Grand Fleet's ships, technology, organization, command and intelligence, and how it fought. While ship-for-ship its German counterparts were better designed, as a combined fleet Admiral Jellicoe's armada was unstoppable. Cicerone Press Trekking in Mallorca: GR221 - The Drystone Route
Book SynopsisThis guidebook describes the GR221, a 140km (87 mile) long-distance trail through northwestern Mallorca, from Port d'Andratx to Pollença. Also known as the 'Ruta de Pedra en Sec' ('the Drystone Route'), the GR221 is a celebration of Mallorca's limestone heritage, taking in many historic drystone structures as it traverses the rocky peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana. Following old stone-paved paths and mule trails, it showcases the region's beautiful landscape of mountains, forests and cultivated terraces, as well as its spectacular coastline. The GR221 can be walked in 1-2 weeks, although the guide also covers 3 alternative start-points and 3 alternative finishes, which would allow for a shorter trek. The main route is presented in 10 stages of 8.5-20.5km (5-13 miles), with a handful of optional detours to bag neighbouring summits. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:25,000 mapping and inspirational photography, plus a wealth of information on local points of interest. Accommodation and travel are also thoroughly covered: the trail boasts good transport links and plentiful facilities on route, with accommodation in welcoming mountain villages and the occasional 'refugi'. A comprehensive introduction offers the opportunity to discover more about the region's diverse plants and wildlife and unique history and culture, and an English-Spanish-Catalan glossary can be found in the appendix. With a favourable climate and stunning scenery, the Serra de Tramuntana has much to tempt the walker. David & Charles BMW Z3 1996-2002
Book SynopsisThis book releases one of the best-kept secrets of the sports car world - the BMW Z3, the latest generation of the traditional small sports car, with the advantages of being based on a tried and tested model range produced by a manufacturer of high quality cars with enviable service and spares support.Designed in Bavaria, styled in California, and built in South Carolina, the Z3 caused generations of motoring writers to dismiss it as a toy sports car, fit only for 'Estate agents, hairdressers and footballers wives,' but is it really so bad?As the Z3 becomes a modern classic, potential buyers have little information to help them sort out the best cars from the others, most Z3 books being a combination of history and data. This guide shows what to expect and what to look for, written against a background of prolonged ownership and Z3 knowledge.Containing a wealth of Z3 information, practical inspection and driving evaluation hints, this book will help potential buyers through the process of finding the car they want, whether it is to be a summer runner or a car to keep and cherish.Trade ReviewVeloce's extended range of Essential Buyer's Guides now includes the affordable BMW Z3 roadster. With the Z3s now selling for below GBP1000, this book can ensure that you really do get to enjoy the bargain roadster experience with reduced risk of nasty surprises.- Richard Kilpatrick- Classic Car Weekly. The first few pages look at the Z3 in general: whether it is the right car for your needs, how expensive the parts and servicing are, what you need to know about the different models, etc. Once you decide a Z3 might fit your bill, the book offers a fairly comprehensive 15-minute evaluation (Walk Away or Stay), followed by the meat of the guide, which is a 10-page section entitled 'Serious Evaluation' that includes a road test. It is a very practical list of items to consider, with a marking system for each to help keep your assessment an objective one. It could be useful for sellers, too, to give them an idea of what potential buyers will be checking out. – New Zealand Classic Car.Table of ContentsIntroduction & ForewordContents1.Is a BMW Z3 right for you? 2.Cost considerations 3.Living with a BMW Z3 4.Relative values 5.Before you view 6.Inspection equipment 7.Fifteen minute evaluation 8.Key points 9.Serious evaluation 10.Auctions 11.Paperwork 12.What's it worth? 13.Potential problems 14.Lack of use problems 15.The BMW Z3 community 16.Vital statistics Index
