Quercus Publishing Ottoman Odyssey: Travels through a Lost Empire:
Book Synopsis**SHORTLISTED FOR THE STANFORD DOLMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR**Alev Scott's odyssey began when she looked beyond Turkey's borders for contemporary traces of the Ottoman Empire. Their 800-year rule ended a century ago - and yet, travelling through twelve countries from Kosovo to Greece to Palestine, she uncovers a legacy that's vital and relevant; where medieval ethnic diversity meets 21st century nationalism, and displaced people seek new identities. It's a story of surprises. An acolyte of Erdogan in Christian-majority Serbia confirms the wide-reaching appeal of his authoritarian leadership. A Druze warlord explains the secretive religious faction in the heart of the Middle East. The palimpsest-like streets of Jerusalem's Old Town hint at the Ottoman co-existence of Muslims and Jews. And in Turkish Cyprus Alev Scott rediscovers a childhood home. In every community, history is present as a dynamic force.Faced by questions of exile, diaspora and collective memory, Alev Scott searches for answers from the cafes of Beirut to the refugee camps of Lesbos. She uncovers in Erdogan's nouveau-Ottoman Turkey a version of the nostalgic utopias sold to disillusioned voters in Europe and the U.S. And yet - as she relates with compassion, insight and humour - diversity is the enduring, endangered heart of this fascinating region.Trade ReviewA lovely, lyrical and always insightful account that is as much about the present as the past. A joy from start to finish * Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads *Beautifully written with clear-eyed judgements and a sharp ear for fascinating anecdote and memorable characters. Exhilarating and often eye-opening, it shows this crucial region of the world from a new perspective. Essential reading for anyone interested in Turkey and its history * Michael Wood *Alev Scott approaches the crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean by side roads and unfrequented channels. Her book is clear, bright, humane and never disheartened. * James Buchan *Brilliantly written with a real feel for character, the book is a pleasure to read and an erudite lesson in a fascinating chapter of Modern History. An indispensable addition to our understanding of the Middle East today. * Roger Scruton *This is a book full of fun, "I never knew that" moments . . . Scott's mission is not to tell the history of the calamitous way the British and French dismantled the empire. Her aim is to find out whether the bits left behind as Ottoman imperialists became Turkish nationalist have common threads . . . She is fascinated by the survival and difference of forgotten, represses and otherwise threatened minorities -- Richard Spencer * The Times *Moving and amusing * Financial Times *Beautifully written - combines history, travel writing and personal discovery . . . Scott's writing is lyrical . . . She writes with a maturity and insight that belies her age, and is surely a rising star of the literary world. Her overall message is one of optimism. -- Saul David * Telegraph *Despite the bloody histories and ugly contemporary realities she seeks to investigate, Scott is always entertaining. She regales her reader with witty pen portraits. -- Alev Adil * Times Literary Supplement *

Rizzoli International Publications A Book Lovers Guide to New York
Book SynopsisAn illustrated guide to New York City tailored for the book-obsessed explorer showcasing the city's best bookshops; libraries; homes and haunts of world-famous writers; and scenes from literary classics with charming drawings by the famed New Yorker cover artist Pierre Le-Tan.A Booklover's Guide to New York is a love letter to everything literary in New York City. It is a book all about books. The book is an object in itself, designed as the ultimate little tome any book collector would love to acquire, layered with witty Pierre Le-Tan drawings, as well as photographs of some of the most precious bookish locations. Rediscover New York in the most fashionably literate way: whether you are in need of an exceptionally rare edition of your favorite novel (perhaps to be found in the dark and musty backroom of The Center for Fiction), or the most tranquil place to devour a short story on a wintry day (an empty underground food court in a Midtown skyscraper), or if yTrade Review"For this guidebook-cum-personal history, writer Cleo Le-Tan collaborated with her father, the late French artist Pierre Le-Tan, to catalog the city’s many literary landmarks. It includes 200 destinations, both famous (the New York Public Library) and off the beaten path (the Brooklyn where Truman Capote lived and wrote parts of In Cold Blood), as well as interviews with two dozen New Yorkers about their favorite bookish spots." —CURBED NATIONAL"The illustrated guide takes literary lovers on a neighborhood odyssey through NYC, visiting iconoclastic bookstores, hidden literary landmarks, and booze-soaked writer’s haunts while meeting the hotspots' resident authors, librarians, collectors and voracious readers along the way." —L'OFFICIEL USA "As Prufrock measured out his life in coffee spoons, some New Yorkers measure theirs in departed bookstores. I weep most for Crawford Doyle, which in 2017 closed after twenty-one years in stately residence on Madison Avenue at Eighty-first Street. But there have been compensations among the heartaches. In 2014, Albertine opened at the French Embassy, on Fifth Avenue and Seventy-ninth Street. The gorgeous store cheekily asserts on billboards that “The best bookstore in France is in New York City.” And Rizzoli, which lost its lease in its double-front townhouse on Fifty-seventh Street in 2014, later reopened on Broadway and Twenty-sixth Street, in a space nearly as grand as the original. Cleo Le-Tan’s A Booklover’s Guide to New York is expressly made for those who view the city’s bookstores as integral to its being. Documenting the shops, sellers, libraries, and bibliophiles of the city, the illustrated book is a worthy addition to any personal collection." —NEW CRITERION "In A Booklover’s Guide to New York, writer Cleo Le-Tan takes a tour of her favorite literary stop-offs, a mix of branch libraries, author hangouts and even street-corner vendors hawking secondhand volumes. Drawings by Le-Tan’s illustrator father, Pierre Le-Tan, add to the analog charm" —WALL STREET JOURNAL "Looking for a romantic escort to stroll the city with this fall? Well, while I don't have anyone to set you up with at the moment, I strongly recommend you get your hands on A Booklover's Guide to New York. A love letter to all things literary, Cleo Le-Tan's new book will walk you through every neighborhood in the city, pointing out the best spots to shop for new, used, and rare titles, the coziest places to settle in for an afternoon of reading, and the landmark stops your favorite authors made before you." —GUEST OF A GUEST "Featuring interviews with notable NYC bibliophiles like Marc Jacobs, Hamish Bowles, Tina Brown and Tavi Gevinson, this illustrated love letter to literary New York showcases the city's best bookshops, libraries and haunts of world-famous writers. Prime coffee-table fare." —PUREWOW.COM

Rowman & Littlefield The Physics of Sailing Explained
Book SynopsisWhat is the best shape for a sailboat? How does turbulence affect a sailboat's movement through the water? Why do some keels have wings? Is it true that some sailboats can sail faster upwind than downwind? Authoritative yet accessible, The Physics of Sailing Explained is the perfect book for all those sailors who want to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of life at sea. It will enable cruisers and racers alike to better grasp how sails, keels, and hulls work together to keep boats afloat, and will sharpen their skills with a more subtle and thorough appreciation of why various boat design features are present and why certain tactics work in certain situations. Anderson outlines the science behind sailing in a way that anyone can understand and benefit from without having to trudge through a physics text or became a naval architect. Concepts are conveyed simply, concisely, and with many examples and illustrations. With the help of this invaluable book, sailors will be better prepared to handle any situations that might arise on the water.Trade ReviewBrian Anderson is well qualified to write on how sail boats sail, being a lecturer in physics as well as a keen cruiser and racer. If you have ever wondered why you were being overtaken by a similar boat to yours which seems to be doing everything you are doing but still managing that extra speed, this book will explain the reason and next time out he may not get in front. A wealth of subjects such as vortex formation, surface resistance, induced drag and even parasitic resistance (not an antibiotics!) are all discussed and explained. The black and white photographs and illustrations complement the text as the reader goes from basics such as a boat s maximum speed is fundamentally determined by its length, to a description of Bernoulli s Principle and the effect of the Coriolis force. Clearly and logically written this is an invaluable book for anyone who wants to do a little more than just messing about in boats. * Cruising *Anderson offers a clear and thorough discussion of sailing, pointed toward people who race their boats but of interest to anyone who sails. Starting with the design of hulls and keels, he analyzes the various ways in which water retards the motion of a boat and shows how they are minimized. He then discusses the physics of sails and the complicated motion of the air that flows around them, and finally the physics of weather and ocean currents. The author shows the general pattern of winds at high and low altitudes and how it is altered by the great land masses, and then follows on how the winds in turn guide the currents below them. There is mathematics, high school style, particularly to explain some surprising aspects of hull shape, but this is neatly segregated into boxes to oblige readers who like to sail in a light breeze. This book will surprise many who think there is not much about boat design that is not obvious. * CHOICE *Books on the how and what of sailing abound, but few go into great depth to answer the why questions why sailboats behave as they do and the physical properties involved. The Physics of Sailing Explained by Bryon Anderson attempts to answer some of these questions. A thin little book at fewer than 150 pages, The Physics of Sailing Explained is not intended for physicists or for yacht and sail designers. It is, however, intended as a basic primer for those interested in gaining a better understanding of the fundamental principles of sailing, and therefore a better appreciation of the sport as a whole. Anderson explores, in layman terms, the mechanics of such phenomena as lift, resistance, turbulence and weather. Our familiar friends Bernoulli and Coriolis are given due treatment, as are such lesser-known names as Reynolds and Van der Waals. A professor of physics at Kent State University, Anderson backs up some of the more important theories with hard equations for the mathematically inclined. Fortunately, knowing these derivations are not necessary to understanding the text. Illustrations, while rather simple from a graphic-design standard, help further explain the principle. * Sailing *Table of ContentsIntroduction I. Hulls 1. Hull Speed 2. Surface Resistance 3. Faber & Faber The Rule of the Land
Book SynopsisIn the wake of the EU referendum, the United Kingdom's border with Ireland has gained greater significance: it is set to become the frontier with the European Union. To uncover its secret landscape, with a troubled past and an uncertain future, Garrett Carr travelled Ireland's border on foot and by canoe. This invisible line has hosted smugglers and kings, runaways, peacemakers, protestors and terrorists, revealing the tumult of a border, changing the way we look at nationhood, land and power. From encounters with border dwellers to uncovering rituals, hidden pathways and ancient monuments, this book presents the borderland as a unique realm of its own, and asks what it holds for the future.

Bradt Travel Guides North Macedonia
Book SynopsisBradt's North Macedonia remains the only standalone English-language guidebook to this increasingly popular destination available outside the country. Originally written by Thammy Evans, a political analyst who lived there for five years, this new edition has been thoroughly updated and restructured to make it even easier to use by Philip Briggs, arguably the world's most experienced guidebook writer. Coverage of national parks has been increased and hiking information has been fully integrated to make it more accessible to casual users. Introductions to many points of interest have been expanded to give more of an overview of what the attractions are and there are several new and redrawn maps. Of all the new countries formed following the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991, North Macedonia was the only one to attain independence without bloodshed. This is a small land that offers huge variety to travellers, from the oldest lake in Europe to soaring forest-swathed mountain ranges and from the millennia-old Neolithic rock observatory at Kokino and Roman mosaics at Heraclea, to dozens of historic and actively-used mediaeval monasteries and mosques. North Macedonia's urban centrepiece and main port of entry is the capital Skopje, now home to a wealth of Ottoman buildings, a lively culinary scene, and several world-class museums, while the main tourist hub is the pretty lakeshore town of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its wealth of medieval churches and other architectural gems. A trio of national parks provide refuge to brown bears, grey wolves, the rare Balkan lynx and a wide variety of birds. And wherever you go, welcoming family-run tavernas and lively pavement cafés serve authentic traditional cooking and locally produced wine that ranks as probably the most affordable anywhere in the European Balkans. Wherever you go and whatever your interest, this is a country that offers countless rewards to independent-minded travellers and those who want to get away from the crowds. And with Bradt's North Macedonia, you'll find everything you need for a successful trip.Trade ReviewRecommended reading Wanderlust MagazineTable of ContentsIntroduction PART ONE GENERAL INFORMATION Chapter 1 Background Information Geography, Climate, Natural history and conservation, History, Government and politics, Economy, People, Language, Religion, Education, Culture Chapter 2 Practical Information When to visit, Highlights and suggested itineraries, Tour operators, Red tape, Getting there and away, Maps and tourist information, Health, Security and safety, What to take, Money and budgeting, Getting around, Accommodation, Eating and drinking, Public holidays and festivals, Shopping, Arts and entertainment, Outdoor pursuits, Media and communications, Business, Buying property, Cultural etiquette, Interacting with local people, Travelling positively PART TWO THE GUIDE Chapter 3 Skopje History, Getting there and away, Getting around, Tourist information, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Entertainment and nightlife, Shopping, Other practicalities, Activities, What to see and do, Around Skopje Chapter 4 Polog and Mavrovo Tetovo, Popova Sapka ski resort and mountain range, Gostivar, Mavrovo National Park, Debar, Around Debar, Kicevo Chapter 5 Lake Ohrid and Galicica National Park Ohrid town, The lakeshore south of Ohrid, Galicica National Park, Struga, Other short trips from Ohrid and Struga Chapter 6 Pelagonia, Prespa and Pelister Bitola, Pelister National Park, Lake Prespa, Prilep, Around Prilep, Krusevo Chapter 7 The Lower Vardar and Tikves Winelands Veles, Stobi Ruins, Negotino, Kavadarci, Demir Kapija, Valandovo, Gevgelija, Kozuf ski resort, Lake Dojran Chapter 8 Stip, Strumica and the Southeast Stip, Kocani, Delcevo, Berovo, Strumica, Around Strumica Chapter 9 Kumanovo and the Northeast Highlands Kumanovo, East from Kumanovo, Kriva Palanka, Kratovo, Around Kratovo Appendix 1 Language Appendix 2 Glossary Appendix 3 Further Information Index

HarperCollins Publishers South and West
Book Synopsis From one of the most important chroniclers of our time, come two extended excerpts from her never-before-seen notebooks – writings that offer an illuminating glimpse into the mind and process of a legendary writer. Trade Review‘Didion at her most fascinatingly unfiltered, recording folksy vernacular at a motel pool, having G & Ts with Walker Percy, and searching fruitlessly for Faulkner’s grave in an Oxford cemetery … her riffs on everything from Gertrude Atherton to crossing the Golden Gate bridge for the first time in three-inch heels captures the thrill of a writer discovering her richest subject: the American mythologies that governed her own romantic girlhood, a yearning for an MGM-style heritage that never really was – a yearning that feels freshly perilous in its delusions.’ Vogue ‘Every era needs better criticism … And so it’s been a relief to read [South and West], investigating the South and its “vertiginous preoccupation with race, class, heritage, style and the absence of style”’ Adam Thirlwell, TLS, Books of the Year ‘Let your heart skip a beat. For here be new writing from the mind behind The Year of Magical Thinking and The White Album – Joan Didion. But this isn’t just for Didionites … For an understanding of certain parts of modern America, it still has eerie resonance … An insight into the process of a writer who can truly be referred to as an icon’ Emerald Street ‘A compelling book — rooted utterly in a past now all but lost to us, while also incredibly timely and relevant … It bears the hallmarks of Didion’s sparkling prose’ Los Angeles Review of Books ‘You'll learn more about America's future from Didion's 40-year-old field notes than you will from tomorrow's newspaper’ Esquire ‘There’s a universal rule against reading someone else’s diary – but in this case, it’s not just OK, it’s required reading’ Marie Claire ‘The power of Didion’s work is on striking display in this slender volume … Didion’s notes are remarkably polished and slicing; they shimmer with dark implications’ Booklist ‘Here are many of the splendid, sharp-eyed sentences for which [Didion] has long been admired … An almost spectral text haunted by a past that never seems distant’ Kirkus Reviews

David & Charles How to Build Motorcycle-engined Racing Cars
Book SynopsisIf you are aspiring to build a racing car, How to Build Motorcycle-engined Racing Cars could be the book that you've been waiting for! Tony Pashley revisits the path that he took in the Pashley Project articles in Race Tech magazine during the design and construction of two successful hillclimb cars, but this time in great detail, with a view to enabling the reader to carry out a similar exercise for themselves. Although hillclimb and sprint cars are the focal topic, a lot of the book is applicable to race cars in general. The cars under discussion in the book are powered by motorcycle engines, which are meeting with great success in the smaller racing car classes. The total process of building a car is described, beginning with the selection and procurement of the engine. Chassis and suspension design is covered in a simplistic but adequate manner as the author's aim is to minimize the inclusion of involved calculations. Two recipes for chassis construction are illustrated in detail, along with guidance on the processes of construction and a description of the required equipment. Following on from this, the fabrication of the suspension is explained. Further chapters are dedicated to the remaining aspects of the vehicle, covering transmission, brakes, fuel and coolant systems, and electrics. The book is heavily illustrated with 200 photographs and extensive explanatory diagrams and tables. It is a vital addition to any would-be kit car builder's library.Trade ReviewThis book is a vital addition to any would be kit car builders library. Historic Racing & Technology
