Book SynopsisJan Morris (then James) first visited Trieste as a soldier at the end of the Second World War. Since then, the city has come to represent her own life, with all its hopes, disillusionments, loves and memories. Here, her thoughts on a host of subjects - ships, cities, cats, sex, nationalism, Jewishness, civility and kindness - are inspired by the presence of Trieste, and recorded in or between the lines of this book.Evoking the whole of its modern history, from its explosive growth to wealth and fame under the Habsburgs, through the years of Fascist rule to the miserable years of the Cold War, when rivalries among the great powers prevented its creation as a free city under United Nations auspices, Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere is neither a history nor a travel book; like the place, it is one of a kind. Jan Morris''s collection of travel writing and reportage spans over five decades and includes such titles as Venice, Coronation Everest,

Book SynopsisWritten by an enthusiast with many years’ experience of working on classic British motorcycles but with little experience of working on these iconic machines this book covers the complete dismantling, refurbishment, and rebuilding of two Tridents: a 1973 Triumph T150V and a 1975 Triumph T160. This immensely helpful book covers all parts of the rebuild in great detail; parts that other manuals gloss over, leaving the restorer confused and frustrated. From the simplest of jobs, such as removing the fuel tank, through to detailed explanations of rebuilding the engine and carburettors, this manual is an absolute must for any enthusiast contemplating working on their Triumph or BSA triple. Over 650 colour photographs and detailed text descriptions clarify every stage ... engine, gearbox, clutch, electrics, frame, wheels, forks, swinging arm, brakes, instruments ... the whole bike! Highly readable and entertaining, the author readily admits to the various pitfalls and mistakes he makes in order for others to avoid them. Designed to sit alongside existing workshop manuals, this book is intended to help the owner complete a full restoration of their beloved triple. Sportier models incorporating turbochargers were also released, for those looking for an additional adrenaline rush. After thirty years, there's now a resurgence of interest in the CX models, both from restorers and custom builders, with aftermarket cafe racer kits available, too. Fonthill Media Ltd British Trolleybuses in Colour

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Last Decade of British Trolleybuses in Colour covers the general demise of the British trolleybus from 1961 to 1972 when the last Bradford trolleybus entered the Thornbury Works for the final time on 26 March 1972. Gripped by a fascination of trolleybuses, John Bishop and Malcolm Keeping decided to capture the vehicles on both cine-film and colour transparencies. Having seen the demise of their 'home town trolleybuses', both authors travelled the country photographing the remaining trolleybus systems, including the capital cities of Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow and London. The photographs not only capture the vast array of colours of the vehicles, but the changing scene of the so called 'Swinging Sixties' when attitudes relaxed dramatically. Since these colourful days, the scene has changed even more so when the local government in the Seventies altered municipal operations becoming companies and many changed names or disappeared altogether. Therefore, this book records far more than just the demise of the trolleybuses, but changes in society as well.

Book SynopsisThe age of exploration was drawing to a close, yet the mystery of the North Pole remained. Contemporaries described the pole as the ‘unattainable object of our dreams’, and the urge to fill in this last great blank space on the map grew irresistible. In 1879 the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds and amid a frenzy of publicity. The ship and its crew, captained by the heroic George De Long, were destined for the uncharted waters of the Arctic. But it wasn’t long before the Jeannette was trapped in crushing pack ice. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew found themselves marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest supplies, facing a seemingly impossible trek across endless ice. Battling everything from snow blindness and polar bears to ferocious storms and frosty labyrinths, the expedition fought madness and starvation as they desperately strove for survival. Trade Review‘Tells the extraordinary story of this little known expedition in Hampton Sides’ well-honed style – meticulous research shoring up a fast-paced narrative’. * Financial Times *‘A stirring story… a brilliant exposition of narrative non-fiction: moving, harrowing, as gripping as any well-paced thriller but a lore more interesting because it is also true’ * The Times *'A splendid book in every way... a marvelous nonfiction thriller.' * Wall Street Journal *‘[Sides] is a scrupulous researcher who has mined all the primary material, including extensive journals and medical logs carried home by survivors, and he quotes judiously, interleaving the narrative with heartbreaking extracts from letters written by De Long’s young wife’ * Spectator *'A vivid tale of exploration set in a howling, deadly wilderness.' -- T.J. It became known as the Amazon in Sweden and the 121 and 122S in export markets, the latter denoting a more sporty derivative. With its elegant, timeless styling the Amazon broke new ground for Volvo - and for passenger cars as a whole. This new book covers the complete story of Volvo Amazon, from 1956 onwards, including full production histories, comprehensive specification details, and over 250 photographs. Book SynopsisThe four-cylinder Austin-Healey 100 sports car had already made a big name for itself by the time the 2.6-litre six-cylinder 100/6 arrived in 1956. This came as a 2+2 seater, joined in 1958 by a two-seat version, and both were replaced by the more powerful 3000 model in 1959, again offered as a two-seater or 2+2, and available with disc brakes. The Mk II 3000, launched in 1961, could be had either as the limited-production 132bhp two-seater with triple carburettors and side screens, or as the less spartan 2+2 convertible with wind-up windows, and the final version was the 2+2-only1964 Mk III, now with 150bhp, a wooden dash and better appointments. All these "Big Healeys" are as much admired today as when they were new, and here marque expert Bill Piggott gives full details of correct specification and equipment for all these cars, backed up by in-depth colour photography of outstanding examples of all models and variants. • Tibetan Foothold

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDervla Murphy's first epic journey from Ireland to India by bicycle, "Full Tilt", is a complete adventure in itself. It is also the first volume of a trilogy of experience that continues with Tibetan Foothold. For the young Irish woman, once she had got herself to India by July 1963, immersed herself in the life of the sub-continent, working for six months in an orphanage for Tibetan children in the refugee camps of Northern India. Here, she fell in love with the 'Tiblets' - the cheerful, tough, uncomplaining, independent and affectionate children of the new Tibet-in-exile. Dervla vividly describes day-to-day life in the camps where hundreds of children are living in squalor while a handful of dedicated volunteers do their best to feed and care for them, attempting to keep disease at bay with limited resources. She pitches in with a helping hand wherever it is needed and finds time to visit the Dalai Lama and his entourage. Dervla's heart-rending account is interwoven with her own observations on the particular cultural and social problems associated with trying to help a people who have lived in isolation from the rest of the world and she becomes a perceptive witness to the inner realities and sometime inadequacies of aid-work. First published in 1966, "Tibetan Foothold" not only confirmed Dervla's status as a traveller, but also revealed her to be a truly independent voice and an acute observer of politics and society.

Leaving her two-year-old daughter behind with her sister, Agatha set sail at the end of January and did not return until December, but she kept up a detailed weekly correspondence with her mother, describing in detail the exotic places and people she encountered as the mission travelled through South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Canada. The extensive and previously unpublished letters are accompanied by hundreds of photos taken on her portable camera as well as some of the original letters, postcards, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia Trade Review‘A compelling, entertaining and joyful read. It is the people she meets along the way for whom she saves her best prose… It is they, and her wonderful descriptions of them, that make this book as enjoyable as any of her novels.’ – SUNDAY EXPRESS ‘The 32-year-old Agatha is confident, full of laughter, and sharply observant. She misses none of the local gossip… We can see an author gathering material for future use – the courting couples, elderly clergymen, spinsters, male secretaries, gouty ex-army officers, and vamps with kohl-ringed eyes, who form Agatha Christie’s typical cast of characters. The long sea voyages, sleeping compartments and dining cars will become the train in Murder on the Orient Express or the paddle steamer in Death on the Nile.’ – DAILY MAIL

Book SynopsisThe East Highland Way is a detailed and descriptive guide to the route developed by Kevin Langan in 2007. Beginning in Fort William and culminating in Aviemore, the trail forms a new link route between the northern end of the West Highland Way and the southern end of the Speyside Way. In addition, the route joins with the Great Glen Way at its southern point in Fort William, making this a new challenge for seasoned walkers and amateurs alike. Not only an illustrated route description, Langan also details the plethora of wildlife to be spotted along the way in each section of the walk. The book also provides information on the various historical attractions with which the route intersects, including Old Inverlochy Castle and Kingussie’s Ruthven Barracks. Langan’s route has been optimised to engage with accommodation where possible, and these accommodation options are included in the guide.Trade ReviewThere is a real need for alternative routes and The East Highland Way offers not only an alternative, but a highly attractive and challenging walk in its own right. - CAMERON McNEISH Because this is a largely unwaymarked route, the quality of the guidance on offer is much more important than it would be on a waymarked route, and it is fair to say that Kevin Langan has produced a route guide that includes everything you could possibly want within a very small and beautifully produced package. Despite the book being small enough to fit into your pocket it packs in a wealth of excellent colour photography alongside maps produced specifically to show the route, and detailed instructions that read as if they have actually been produced on the ground and at the time, and which helpfully highlight possible navigational pitfalls. This really is an outstanding little book which can be recommended without reservation. - UNDISCOVERED SCOTLAND
