  • Mercedes-Benz W114 and W115: The Complete Story

The Crowood Press Ltd Mercedes-Benz W114 and W115: The Complete Story

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe W114 and W115 models were enormously successful for Mercedes-Benz, and their sales in nine years of production between 1967 and 1976 almost equalled the total of all Mercedes passenger models built in the 23 years between 1945 and the time of their introduction in 1968. There were many reasons for this success, but perhaps the most important was that Mercedes expanded the range to include a simply vast amount of variants including four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines, four-cylinder diesels; saloons, coupes and long-wheelbase models. With around 200 photographs, this book features the story of the design and development of the W114 and W115 ranges. It gives full technical specifications, including paint and interior trim choices; includes a chapter on the special US variants; gives production tables and model type codes and explores the Experimental Safety Vehicles developed from these cars. Finally, there is a chapter on buying and owning a 114- or 115-series Mercedes.Trade ReviewThis book does a very good job of bring these cars back into the spotlight. Written by the ever dependable James Taylor, it delivers his usual recipe of thorough and clearly set out history plus lots of technical details. Illustrated with numerous photos from the Mercedes-Benz archive and other sources, this is a great source of information for anyone interested in these highly competent and subtly elegant cars. -- Chris Bass * Mercedes-Benz Club Gazette *The prolific James Taylor throws the spotlight on the often-overlooked W114/5s in a release that definitely lives up to its The complete story billing. The absorbing extras, such as the review of conversions from Binz and Crayford as well as many other less-well-known firms, including a rather aesthetically challenged turquoise double-cab pick-up from Argentina, that make this book seem very good value for money. * Classic & Sports Car *The Crowood Press has been on a roll with excellent books covering Mercedes-Benz model histories. Their latest issue covering the W114/W115 sedans and coupes from late 1960s through the mid-1970s continues their tradition of strong work. James Taylor has been writing about cars since the 1970s and it really shows in this work. Careful research and thorough coverage are evident throughout the book. * Star magazine, the Mercedes Benz Club of America *

  • Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3: The Complete

The Crowood Press Ltd Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3: The Complete

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 3-cylinder Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 were developed to compete with Honda’s forthcoming 750cc motorcycle. Initially they did not compare well – although very fast, they lacked sophistication and their quirky styling was offputting – and the decision was made to suspend production. This was not the most auspicious start, but a fightback was initiated and in 1971 the factory race team had a triumphant year including placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Daytona 200. With over 250 photographs, the full rollercoaster-ride history of these bikes is described, including: how the bikes came to be, including a timeline of significant events; a year-by-year account of the evolution of the bikes, through the T150, T160 and Rocket 3; the story of the Hurricane; the full racing history and, finally, the Triumph 3-cylinder bikes today.Trade ReviewEstablished author Peter Henshaw has gone to great lengths to interview those who were involved in design manufacture and marketing of the bikes as well as doing extensive research that has more than added to the well-know facts that have been rehashed repeatedly over the past few years in books and magazines. This new information is all catalogued in the bibliography at the rear of this hardback. At £25.00 it is still worth adding to your library as there is a lot of new information that has been unearthed, making it an important addition to your knowledge base. -- Ian Kerr, reviewer Desmo 261 * Desmo magazine *

The History Press Ltd Narrow Boat

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1944, and now reissued with new black-and-white illustrations and a foreword by Jo Bell, Canal Laureate, this book has become a classic on its subject, and may be said to have started a revival of interest in the English waterways. It was on a spring day in 1939 that L.T.C. Rolt first stepped aboard Cressy. This engaging book tells the story of how he and his wife adapted and fitted out the boat as a home, and recreates the journey of some 400 miles that they made along the network of waterways in the Midlands. It recalls the boatmen and their craft, and celebrates the then seemingly timeless nature of the English countryside through which they passed. As Sir Compton Mackenzie wrote, ?it is an elegy of classic restraint unmarred by any trace of sentiment? for a way of life and a rural landscape that have now all but disappeared.

Book SynopsisA first-hand account of the life of travel writer Dervla Murphy in which she tells of her early life in Lismore, Co. Waterford, in her rather unusual household. Her father was the county librarian and her mother a chronic invalid. An only child, Dervla was allowed from the age of seven to freely roam on her own. At ten, she cycled ten miles to a local mountain, climbed it, then lost herself on the way down, and was forced to stay out all night - much to the distress of her parents. Living in a house that was crumbling around their ears, she reveals how her family hid a Republican who was later hanged, how she tested herself (with hot water) to increase her pain threshold, how she avoided an insane and shrieking maid, who was convinced that Dervla's parents were fried eggs, and how she helped another maid give birth under the kitchen table. An early love of books and writing, led her to enter a writing competition arranged by a local newspaper, and she won first prize for five weeks in a row.

    David & Charles BMW Boxer Twins: All air-cooled R45, R50, R60,

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThere are lots of books about the classic BMW Boxers; their history, performance, lineage, and the minutiae of its specification. But none of them concentrate entirely on telling you what to look for when buying one secondhand. That's what this book is about - it is a straightforward, practical guide to buying a used Boxer twin. It doesn't list all the correct colour combinations for each year or analyse the bike's design philosophy - there are excellent books listed at the end of this one that do all of that - but it will help you avoid buying a dud. Point by point, it takes the reader through everything that needs looking at when buying a Boxer, plus spares prices, which is the best model to buy for your needs, and a look at auctions, restorations and paperworkThe last of the 'classic' air-cooled Boxer twins, these bikes are now collector's items, and many have been saved, restored and continue to be ridden - this book tells the reader how to be part of the Boxer's ongoing story.Trade ReviewIt's a fair little book that will help prospective buyers explore the more serious BMW Boxer puzzle, problems and pleasures that await them.- Sump. This little book covers all the 'airheads' with the exception of the GS series, from 1969 to 1994. As with the other titles in this long-running series, the BMW Boxer twins version covers all the consideration of buying one ... all handy knowledge and reading this book prior to any purchase decision could well pay off in the long run.- Old Bike Australasia. Peter Henshaw has won to the real experts on the marque and model to come up with a detailed, step by step guide of what to look for when buying on of the machines covered. It is a straightforward, practical guide to buying a used Boxer twin and, it this is your intended purchase, it is well worth reading beforehand and haven in you pocket to save buying a pup making the purchase price cheap!- Ian Kerr. The Essential Buyer's Guide series, this time about the BMW Boxer Twins (except the GS models) from 1969 to 1994. Written by Peter Henshaw, is the well-illustrated cloth (size 14x19.5cm soft cover) especially practical: what are the strengths/weaknesses of the different models, how are the components provided, what do you need to keep in mind if you want to buy a Boxer, and so on. Certainly for those who are not yet familiar with the BMW Boxers, but have their eye on such a model, this 60-page book is very useful. At the back is a list of models, production period and frame/engine numbers (until 1984 were the same) so you can quickly see if the papers are (hopefully!) with the engine. - Het Motor Rijwiel.
