Book SynopsisA facsimile edition of Bradshaw’s fascinating guide to Europe’s rail network. Bradshaw’s descriptive railway handbook of Europe was originally published in 1913 and was the inspiration behind Michael Portillo’s BBC television series ‘Great Continental Railway Journeys’. It is divided into three sections: timetables for services covering the continent; short guides to the best places to see and to stay in each city; and a wealth of advertisements and ephemeral materials concerning hotels, restaurants and services that might be required by the early twentieth century rail traveller. This beautifully illustrated facsimile edition offers a fascinating glimpse of Europe and of a transport network that was shortly devastated by the greatest war the world had ever seen.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Wicklow Way was the first long-distance walking trail to be established in Ireland. Coming in at 130km (81 miles), the route traverses the county of Wicklow, from Marlay Park on the outskirts of Dublin to Clonegal, just over the county border in neighbouring Carlow, and can be comfortably completed in a week. The guide also details several adjacent trails that can be interchanged with the main route, and short detours off-route (also described) lead to welcoming villages offering accommodation and a range of other facilities. The route is presented in seven stages, each with an overview followed by clear route description and mapping. There are elevation profiles and notes on local points of interest. In addition to background information about the county's history, geology, plants and wildlife, you will find all the information you need to walk the route, with helpful advice on transport, accommodation and kit. Accommodation listings, useful contacts and a glossary of Irish place-names can be found in the appendices. Wicklow is a county of varied landscapes: mountains and sweeping uplands offer extensive views, whereas other stages take you through verdant glens and past scenic lakes. The area is rich in both culture and history, with the ancient Monastic City at Glendalough a special highlight. And of course, there are characterful villages and pubs where you can experience true Irish hospitality. The Wicklow Way has plenty to commend it and is a great way to explore this wonderful county.Table of ContentsMap key Overview map Route summary table Introduction Geology Scenery History Wildlife Plantlife Wicklow Mountains National Park Travel to and from the Wicklow Way When to walk Accommodation Food and drink Money matters Communications Daily schedule What to pack Waymarking and access Maps of the route Emergencies Using this guide The Wicklow Way Day 1 Marlay Park to Knockree Day 2 Knockree to Oldbridge Day 3 Oldbridge to Glendalough Day 4 Glendalough to Glenmalure Day 5 Glenmalure to Moyne Day 6 Moyne to Boley Bridge Day 7 Boley Bridge to Clonegal Appendix A Accommodation list Appendix B Useful contacts Appendix C Irish place names

Simon & Schuster A Course Called Scotland

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * “One of the best golf books this century.” —Golf Digest Tom Coyne’s A Course Called Scotland is a heartfelt and humorous celebration of his quest to play golf on every links course in Scotland, the birthplace of the game he loves. For much of his adult life, bestselling author Tom Coyne has been chasing a golf ball around the globe. When he was in college, studying abroad in London, he entered the lottery for a prized tee time in Scotland, grabbing his clubs and jumping the train to St. Andrews as his friends partied in Amsterdam; later, he golfed the entirety of Ireland’s coastline, chased pros through the mini-tours, and attended grueling Qualifying Schools in Australia, Canada, and Latin America. Yet, as he watched the greats compete, he felt something was missing. Then one day a friend suggested he attempt to play every links course in Scotland and qualify for the grTrade Review“One of the best golf books this century.” —Golf Digest “Tom Coyne has a knack for setting impossible tasks for himself. . . . Mr. Coyne is back at it again with A Course Called Scotland. This time he avails himself of cars, planes, and ferries, but the task he sets is no less preposterous: to play 107 courses in 56 days. . . . Readers who enjoyed Mr. Coyne’s rollicking Irish book will be interested to learn how their fearless travel guide has fared in the intervening years. . . . There’s no less wit in the writing—British weather forecasts, he concludes, are ‘as useful as ashtrays on motorbikes’—and almost as many well-rendered characters, both locals he meets and friends and readers who join him along the way. . . . All the famous courses are here: St. Andrews, Dornoch, Turnberry, Carnoustie. But even seasoned golf travelers will be unfamiliar with many of the courses Mr. Coyne finds. He tees it up where nature carved holes that no architect would dream of, where 12 holes instead of 18 suit the members just fine, and where munching sheep, not mowers, keep the fairway grass short. Does he discover the secret to the game? He finds several, including, most practically, ‘never, ever give up.’ ” —John Paul Newport, The Wall Street Journal “They said it couldn’t be done—that he’d never be able to top Ireland. But with Scotland, he did it. Damn you, Tom Coyne!” —Michael Bamberger, author of Men in Green “A fast-moving, insightful, often funny travelogue encompassing the width of much of the British Isles . . . One of the reasons A Course Called Scotland works so well is because Coyne extended an offhanded invitation to listeners of a radio show to join him in Scotland. . . . The eclectic cast of characters who pop up throughout the story underscore the deep connections forged through travel.” —Golfweek “Coyne has a wonderful way of making the reader feel a part of the quest. You experience his trials and tribulations as well as the sense of wonder and awe that comes with playing golf in Scotland.” —Chicago Tribune “There is a purity in the Scots’ game that isn’t about manicured greens or a ball’s ‘spin rate.’ Coyne admires their ‘homemade’ swings that merely focus on getting the golf ball around the course and in the hole. He becomes convinced that perfection is an illusion, though a powerful one. He slowly accepts his limitations, one day at a time, swing after swing.” —Bloomberg “Tom Coyne’s much-anticipated follow-up to his fun book A Course Called Ireland lived up to my high expectations. Who wouldn’t be jealous of Coyne’s adventures getting to play every links in Scotland? He mixes well his commentary on the courses with the historical significance of each place he visits. This is a must-read.” —Golf Advisor “The author entertains us with accounts of foul weather, fair friends (one of whom got hit in the face with a drive), and astonishing courses, some dating back centuries. . . . Golfers and golf-o-philes will gobble this down.” —Kirkus Reviews “In this witty and charming follow-up to A Course Called Ireland, Coyne continues living a golfer’s dream by playing every links course in Scotland, golf’s birthplace. . . . Enthusiasts will revel in Coyne’s eloquent narration of his course-by-course adventures, while casual fans might be tempted to pick up their clubs a little more often.” —Publishers Weekly “Fighting through physical exhaustion, self-doubt, homesickness and spates of nasty weather, Coyne knocks out 111 full or partial rounds on 107 courses, sometimes three rounds a day, in his search for the ‘secret’ of great golf. It’s no secret that his passion for the game (and life) shows through on every page, and we get to follow his every step through modern golf’s birthplace.” —Golf Tips Magazine “News of a new tale by Tom Coyne is always reason to celebrate—assuming you love golf, irresistible storytelling, a cast of colorful characters and a poignant journey through the birthplace of the game. Lots of us share Tom’s Mitty-dream of running away to the great links lands and the lesser known coastal gems of Scotland. But he’s masterfully accomplished the feat with his charming pilgrimage around the game’s Holy Land that unfolds as smoothly as a fine single malt. Coyne's trademark wit, humor, unerring ear for the locals, and deep knowledge of the game are on full display, rendering this a poetic journey you won’t soon forget.” —James Dodson, author of Final Rounds Praise for A Course Called Ireland "There is no golf trip like an Irish golf trip, and Tom Coyne has risen to meet that road. I look forward to reading this again. Pack it with your sticks." —Bill Murray "Equal parts touching, wry, and hilarious." —The New York Times "Witty and winning . . . A joy from start to finish." —The Wall Street Journal "Like the country itself, Coyne's book is an affable ramble through a charmed land." —Chicago Tribune "A Course Called Ireland explores the history of the land being traveled and pauses for tales both tall and short, as well as, in this case, for pub songs. Coyne finds plenty of all of the above from Kilkee to Kerry, the long way. Golfers reading this book may wish they'd been walking by Coyne's side." —Boston Globe "A delightful and fun book." —Minneapolis Star-Tribune "A really good read." —The Modesto Bee

Book Synopsis70 years of passion. 70 years, in which the enthusiasm for sporty driving, advanced technology and sensual design has created something very special. Is it a coincidence that more than 70 percent of all Porsche cars ever built are still on the road today? There can only be one answer when you gather together the highlights from seven decades of sports car construction - not in a well-tempered museum, but in the places for which they were created: road and track. What if you had to get a 918 Spyder to Germany via the snowbound passes of northern Italy? What would it be like to rerun the legendary record-breaking lap of the Nordschleife in Stefan Bellof's 956? Can you bring a 906 to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca under your own steam? This may sound like a shimmering daydream, but it turns into a tribute to 70 years of brand history, captured in unparalleled images. Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisIf you are thinking of buying a sports car you could enjoy every day, the E85 and E86 BMW Z4 should be top of your list. With well proven and great sounding engines, excellent handling and a choice of Roadster or Coupe body styles, choosing the right Z4 will give you years of pleasurable motoring, but how do you know which is the right one? With the help of this buyer's guide, marque expert David Smitheram describes how to spot a bad car quickly, and how to assess a promising Z4 like a professional. Packed with good advice, from learning the differences between each model (including the M and Alpina Roadster models), running costs, through paperwork, vital statistics, valuation, details of the Z4 community, to whether the car will suit you and your lifestyle. With accompanying colour photos this is the complete guide to choosing, assessing and buying the original BMW Z4.Trade ReviewWritten by David Smithery, who is doing a great job running the Z4 Register at the moment. With his knowledge gained because of his motorsport activities, he seemed a perfect candidate to produce a book on the buying of a Z4. The book itself is well written and very informative, and covers all Z4 models Roadster and Coupes produced between 2003 and 2009, including the 'M' and Alpina models. It starts off giving a brief history of the Z4 with a few facts and figures. The the following chapters start off by asking if the Z4 is the right car for you to own, giving you some of the pros and cons of owning a Z4 car. So who would buy this book? Anyone who is in the process of buying or even thinking about buying a Z4; it will give you great information, and will give you all of the points to look out for when you see a car that you think may be a good purchase. If you are in the market for a Z4 there is los of advice and tips to help with your purchase. Would recommend. - Straight Six Magazine. One of the newest cars to receive Veloce's guide's, the Z4 isn't old enough to have suffered significant corrosion, so the typical guide to common rust spots isn't applicable here. Nonetheless, there's still plenty in this book, not only in things to look out for, but also in the myriad options and variants that BMW graced the Z4 with. A must for the prospective Z4 buyer, particularly those not sure of exactly which Z4 they want, taking you from passing admirer to model expert. be warned: you'll definitely end up wanting a Z4M. - Classic Car Weekly. I believe the content is accurate and a good reflection of owning and driving the marque. Its a very informative guide to anyone thinking of buying a Z4. I liked the mixture of photographs presented, the tips for buying and owning, the little quirks that were discussed (like the poor design of roof motor and how to fix it), and also the statistics at the end of the book. I believe this is a must for anyone seriously thinking of owning a Z4. - www.z4-forum.com. One of the latest additions to the always-useful Essential Buyers Guide series of books is a BMW Z4 edition, written by David Smitherham. This 64-page, A5, perfect-bound, colour book is said to be the world's only published Z4 buyers guide, and covers every E85 and E86 Z4 model there had been, including the rare Z4M and Alpina versions. It's a great read and should prove valuable to would-be and existing Z4 owners alike. – BMW Car.Table of ContentsIntroduction - the purpose of this book 1 Is the Z4 the right car for you? - Roadster or Coupe? 2 Cost Considerations - affordable or a money pit? 3 Living with a Z4 - Will you get along together?..... 4 Relative Values - Which model for you? 5 Before you view - be well informed 6 Inspection equipment - these items will really help 7 Fifteen minute evaluation - walk away or stay? 8 Key points - where to look for problems 9 Serious evaluation - 60 minutes for years of enjoyment 10 Auctions - Another way to buy your dream 11 Paperwork - correct documentation is essential! 12 What's it worth? - good value? 13 Do you really want to restore? - it could cost more than you think 14 Paint problems - What's behind the shine? 15 Problems due to lack of use - Z4s need exercise too! 16 The Community - Z4 owners are friendly and enthusiastic 17. With over 350 pages of detailed description and 40 maps, this remains the definitive source of information to a country that is often described as the whole of West Africa in microcosm. This new edition includes details of the rapidly changing transport situation, notably the opening of the new international airport and the first bridge to span the Gambia River. All regions of the country are covered, including detailed information on access to Senegal's national parks, with detailed maps, itineraries, and practical information on transport, accommodation and eating for each region. Senegal boasts a variety of landscapes and cultures that belie its compact size. Book SynopsisAmerican Muscle Cars features stunning historic and contemporary photography and offers a thorough chronology of this classic car's evolution from the 1960s to the present.Trade Review"Author Darwin Holmstrom expertly tells the story in an informative and interesting way that make this book fun to read. Darwin's expertise is drawn from his experience of having written, co-written, or contributed to over thirty books with car or motorcycle subjects. The excellent text is matched with 260 color and 55 black and white photos. Dozens of original factory photos are complimented by the work of well-known automotive photographer Tom Glatch. Glatch's large, high quality photos bring these colorful muscle cars to life." * Examiner.com *"Not just another coffee-table picture book, this is a thorough, well-researched, multi-brand history of American performance." * Muscle Car Review *"Holmstrom and Glatch churn up the memories in their book with some great factory archive information with no shortage of photographs." * San Diego Union Tribune *"American Muscle Cars is a fantastic book, sized perfectly for any coffee table. The writing is informative yet thrillingly engaging, creating an extremely rare occurrence: a coffee-table book that is still fun to read straight through. Holmstrom is often irreverent (note the "clackers" use mentioned above), but is so in a charming, funny way which allows him to simply say what he means—the best example is when describing what post-WWII babies wanted from their cars: sex appeal. Overall, American Muscle Cars is a well-written, well-laid-out, entertaining read that would be a joyful addition to any auto enthusiasts' book collection." * TheNewsWheel.com *"Auto enthusiast Darwin Holmstrom says that when he was growing up in the Midwest, boys his age were just as interested in muscle cars - sporty models with powerful engines - as they were in girls. New 52, he laments the demise of the vehicles. His new book "American Muscle Cars" (Motorbooks, $50), offers a history, including classics like the Pontiac GTO, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Their equivalents today are more sophisticated luxury vehicles like the Aston Martin or Maserati. But for Mr. Holmstrom, they just aren't the same. "A real muscle car doesn't have 19 air bags," he says. "It just has a big, powerful engine that makes your heart stop every time you stomp on the accelerator." * Wall Street Journal *

The histories of Japan, Okinawa and the entire Pacific region are crucially intertwined; therefore the review of this fascinating chain of islands is crucial to understanding all of East Asia. Few people can point to Okinawa on a map, yet this tiny island sitting between China and Japan is a hub for international affairs. Ninety percent of all U.S. military forces in Japan are located on Okinawa, and more than 500,000 military personnel and their families have lived there. In Okinawa: The History of an Island People, noted Eastern affairs specialist George Kerr recounts the fascinating history of the island and its environs, from 1314 A.D. to the late twentieth century.
