Book SynopsisThis is not simply a guidebook to the Acropolis Museum: by presenting the works of art exhibited in the museum, it endeavours to resynthesize the history of the Sacred Rock as part of the cultural and the wider historical process of Athens. Following the sequence of the visitor’s tour of the museum, it is lavishly illustrated with photographs, as well as with numerous plans and reconstruction drawings, which enable the reader to understand each of the fragmentarily preserved works in its context. It also answers many of the questions raised in the discerning reader’s mind: what was the size and the population of ancient Athens? what is the meaning of the beasts represented on the large Archaic pediments? what do the Korai statues represent? why did the Erechtheion become so complex and what was the role of the Karyatids? why was the temple of Athena Nike built in the Ionic order? what led Pericles and his advisers to opt for the specific building programme and how were the major public works financed? why was it decided to place an Ionic frieze on the Doric Parthenon? what political messages were transmitted to Sparta through the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon?Table of ContentsATHENS IN THE MUSEUM BASEMENTS ASCENDING… to the exhibition space and the slopes of the Sacred Rock HOUSES AND MINOR SANCTUARIES Τhe sanctuary of Nymphe The Asklepieion The sanctuary of Dionysos and the theatre THE ACROPOLIS PREHISTORY THE ARCHAIC ACROPOLIS Τhe pediments Τhe ex-votos The korai THE ACROPOLIS DURING THE PERSIAN WARS Works in the ‘Severe Style’ THE CLASSICAL ACROPOLIS ΜONUMENTS OF THE SACRED ROCK OUTSIDE THE MUSEUM THE PROPYLAIA THE TEMPLE OF ATHENA or WINGLESS NIKE ΤHE ERECHTHEION The Karyatids and the frieze EX-VOTOS ON THE ACROPOLIS THE PARTHENON Historical and political background Architectural features THE SCULPTED DECORATION The metopes The frieze The role of the frieze Frieze and art Frieze and politics The coloration of the monuments Τhe pediments Stylistic and interpretative approach The akroteria of the Parthenon Τhe cult statue Ideology and politics in the Acropolis monuments BIBLIOGRAPHY

Kapon Editions The Church of Christ the Saviour, Thessaloniki:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe small Byzantine church of the Soter (Christ the Saviour) stands on modern Egnatia Street in Thessaloniki, to the west of the arch of Galerius. Its name is preserved from the Ottoman period in the oral tradition alone. Tradition also provides the information that the people of Thessaloniki, particularly families who had lost children, used to baptise their infants in the small church and give the child the name of the Soter invoking his protection for their children. This short monograph on the little church of Christ the Saviour in Thessaloniki, is a brief account of the findings of the archaeological excavation that was carried out as part of the work of restoration of the damage caused during the 1978 earthquake. Special emphasis is placed on the iconographic and stylistic analysis of the wall paintings of the monument. The objective is to give prominence to the theological and artistic value of this significant, though little known, Byzantine monument in the second most important city of the Byzantine empire. Book SynopsisThe Itinerary of a Collector: The Vasilis Korkolopoulos Collection Greek language text, c. 100 colour illustrations. Vasilis Korkolopoulos seeks to rescue from oblivion rare items of folk art covering the entire spectrum of human activity in the recent past (weapons, cartridge pouches, amulets, watches, etc.). Leaving no stone unturned, he searches for the thread that will lead him back to forgotten layers of Greek culture and the Greek psyche. Consequently, simply to browse through the pages of the catalogue of his collection is rather more than just a lesson in good taste: it familiarises the reader with the symbolical vocabulary that created and gave expression to the fantasy world of Modern Greeks. The collection is given a special character and a wider significance precisely by the care shown by its creator for Greek cultural self-awareness, to which the present volume also aspires to give prominence. Prologue by Professor Angelos Delivorrias, Director of the Benaki Museum. Book SynopsisThis is the first official guidebook to the site of ancient Corinth published by the ASCSA in over 50 years, and it comes fully updated with the most current information, colour photos, maps, and plans. It is an indispensable resource for the casual tourist or professional archaeologist new to the site. The guide begins with a history of Corinth and its excavations and then presents two tours. The first takes visitors through the archaeological site from the Temple of Apollo to the Forum, the Fountain of Peirene, and more. The second tour covers the ancient monuments outside the fenced area of the site, including the Odeion, the Theatre, and the Asklepieion, and then the various remains of ancient Corinth located within and outside the ancient Greek walls, including the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore and the Lechaion Basilica. Short bibliographic notes for many entries lead the reader to fuller descriptions of monuments, objects, and concepts; a glossary is also provided. Interspersed in the text are topographical notes and focus boxes on special topics such as geology, Pausanias, St. Paul, and prehistoric Corinth and the Corinthia. Greek language editionTrade ReviewThe authors as well as the ASCSA design team have produced a highly functional guidebook to help lay and professional visitors to engage with the extensive excavated and visible remains. The monuments are brought to life by plans, reconstructions, historic photographs, and color images. This will be an invaluable aid to interpret what can be seen on the ground, and will serve as a model for guides to other archaeological sites. David Gill, BMCR 2018.12.05.

Book SynopsisThis expansive book reveals the great diversity and range of art of the Arab lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and later South Asia. Published to coincide with the historic reopening of the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum's Islamic Art Department, it presents nearly three hundred masterpieces from one of the finest collections in the world. The works range chronologically from the origins of Islam in the seventh century through the nineteenth century, and geographically from as far west as Spain and Morocco to as far east as India. Outstanding miniature paintings and illuminated manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, carpets, glass, and metalwork reflect the mutual influence of artistic practice in the sacred and secular realms. Many of these beautiful objects display the rich traditions of calligraphy, vegetal ornament (the arabesque), and geometric patterning that distinguish the arts of the Islamic world. With seven informative essays and almost three hundred catalogue entries-supplemented by introductory essays on the collection and its display-this handsome and comprehensive overview will enlighten the specialist and the general reader alike.Trade Review"This publication is the most ambitious of its type for some years. Of the numerous surveys of Islamic art already available, this is probably the most comprehensive and scholarly while at the same time being quite accessible... With entries by a host of scholars of different nationalities, the task of achieving consistency must have required considerable editorial discipline. This has been achieved."--Apollo

The American University in Cairo Press Abu Simbel: A Short Guide to the Temples

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe three-thousand-year-old rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel and the story of their rescue from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s are almost as familiar worldwide as the tale of the gold funerary mask and brief life of the boy king Tutankhamun. Yet although they are among the most celebrated, visited, and photographed archaeological sites in the world, the two temples are among the least understood by the visitor. In this lucidly written, beautifully illustrated guide, Nigel Fletcher-Jones explains the main features of both temples, discusses what they teach us about ancient Egypt during the reign of Rameses II (1265–1200 BC), and illustrates which gods and goddesses were worshipped here. With over 50 new photographs, drawings, and diagrams, and packed with fascinating insights, Abu Simbel: A Short Guide to the Temples is an indispensable companion and souvenir to one of the world’s great archaeological sites.Trade Review"Impressively informed and informative, Abu Simbel: A Short Guide to the Temples is a pleasure to simply browse and will prove to be a welcome addition to personal, professional, community, college, and university library Egyptology, Egyptian History, and Travel collections."—Midwest Book ReviewTable of Contents1.
