    Book SynopsisThrough the analysis of several commemorative acts in space, matter and image, namely museums and memorials, this book reflects on the ways in which architecture as a discipline, a practice and a discourse represents the Holocaust. In doing so, it problematises how one presents an extreme historical case in a contemporary context and integrates the historical into actuality. By examining several cases, the book defines the issues faced by various architects who dealt with this topic and discusses their separate and distinctive approaches. In each case, it analyses the ways in which the cultural and political contexts of commemoration led to a different interpretation of the condition. Focusing on the Ghetto Fighters' House, the world's first Holocaust museum; Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem; the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington; and the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, the book discusses how the representation of history by architecture creates a Trade Review'In this personal, yet deeply learned exploration of Holocaust commemoration on the cusp of "new media," Eran Neuman examines an age when physical memorials and architectural representation of Holocaust memory become something else altogether. Shoah Presence: Architectural Representations of the Holocaust is a sensitive meditation on the ways aesthetic spaces in the landscape conjure internal memory spaces within us.' James E. Young, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA ’This book studies Holocaust museums on the premise that their location away from the site of trauma poses an intriguing set of representational, philosophical and even political problems. Neuman’s brilliant and thorough analysis brings the reader into the heart of the multi-layered contestations about what architecture should or should not do in these contexts.’ Mark Jarzombek, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USATable of ContentsIntroduction: Holocaust Commemoration and Architectural Representation; Chapter 1 Dwelling in Monumentality: Presence and Memory in the Ghetto Fighters’ Kibbutz; Chapter 2 Monumental Holocaust Landscapes at Yad Vashem; Chapter 3 “The Events you are about to Experience are Real”: Authenticity at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum; Chapter 4 Diagramming Memory: Peter Eisenman’s Holocaust Memorial in Berlin; epi Epilogue: Presencing the Holocaust;

    Book SynopsisAlmost all museums hold photographs in their collections, and museum professionals and their audiences engage with photographs in a myriad of ways. Yet despite some three decades of critical museology and photographic theory, and an extensive debate on the politics of representation, outside art museums, almost no critical attention has been given specifically to the roles, purposes and lives of these photographs within museums. This book brings into focus the ubiquitous yet entirely unconsidered work that photographs are put to in museums. The authors'' argument is that there is an economy of photographs in museums which is integral to the processes of the museum, and integral to the understanding of museums. The international contributors, drawn from curators and academics, reflect a range of visual and museological expertise. After an introduction setting out the range of questions and problems, the first part addresses broad curatorial strategies and ways of thinking about phTrade Review’This most needed volume represents a highly inspiring investigation into the role of photography as object and tool of representation in museums and archives today. Through a comprehensive selection of contributions by an interdisciplinary variety of authors - all drawing on hands-on experience - this volume fills up a void in photography and cultural studies. It is a must-read for everyone working with the materiality and meaning of photography.’ Mette Sandbye, University of Copenhagen, Denmark ’We have been needing a book like this for a long time. Looking at what photographs do, and could do, in museums, it beautifully fills a gap that has for too long stayed open in the literature on museums, museum practice, representation and photographs. On these pages we see photographs as acts of remembrance, as haunting, as absent, as representational forms and as much more besides. And throughout, this essential new volume not only explores the work of photographs in museums, but also makes a significant contribution to far wider debates on the processes of representation.’ Sandra Dudley, University of Leicester, UKTable of ContentsList of Figures, Notes on Contributors, Acknowledgements, Introduction, The Affective Photograph, Curatorial Strategies 1: Working Images, Curatorial Strategies 2: Photographi Art Works, Curatorial Strategies 3: Contested Stories, Working In The Real World, Digital Environments and Photograph Collections, Index

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd British Art for Australia 18601953

    Book SynopsisTraditional postcolonial scholarship on art and imperialism emphasises tensions between colonising cores and subjugated peripheries. The ties between London and British white settler colonies have been comparatively neglected. Artworks not only reveal the controlling intentions of imperialist artists in their creation but also the uses to which they were put by others in their afterlives. In many cases they were used to fuel contests over cultural identity which expose a mixture of rifts and consensuses within the British ranks which were frequently assumed to be homogeneous. British Art for Australia, 1860â1953: The Acquisition of Artworks from the United Kingdom by Australian National Galleries represents the first systematic and comparative study of collecting British art in Australia between 1860 and 1953 using the archives of the Australian national galleries and other key Australian and UK institutions. Multiple audiences in the disciplines of art history, cultural histTrade Review"British Art for Australia makes a valuable contribution to the histories of Australian art collecting and Anglo-Australian cultural identity. In addition to enriching an understanding of Australian galleries, it will also provide a useful point of comparison for studies investigating the collections development of institutions in other former British settler societies, such as Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. Potter’s study is well supported by extensive archival research."--Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide"The book provides a nuanced reading that contributes to our understanding of the complexities of cultural exchange that underpinned the development of the British collections of Australia’s state galleries."--The Burlington Magazine"Potter is thorough in his documentation of how British artworks contained monarchist and imperialist meanings, with depictions of dramatic historical and military events, which were attractive to self-appointed trustees and self-chosen benefactors of the galleries who came from conservative empire-loyalist civic and business elites. ... Potter makes an original contribution to our art history when he explores how the preferences of the galleries as to what artworks were to be acquired were influenced by debates in Australia."--Australian Historical Studies"Matthew Potter’s British Art for Australia contests the still prevalent view that Australia was a "dumping ground" for unfashionable and second-rate British art from the Victorian period until the middle of the twentieth century, when Australia was finally confident enough in its own cultural identity to consign these embarrassing purchases to storage. Instead, Potter argues convincingly that Australian cultural institutions actively sought out the best the British art world had to offer even though they were often constrained by issues of distance and cost, but certainly neither by retardataire taste nor lock-tugging acquiescence to metropolitan dictates."--Art History"The volume summarizes an enormous amount of detailed archival research that draws upon the national gallery archives and includes annual and trustee reports, newspapers, and journals, as well as other more general accounts. This provides an invaluable reference for those in the field ... Potter is to be commended for producing an extensively researched, thought-provoking, and convincing account of the previously overlooked area of acquisitions of British art for Australia."--Victorian StudiesTable of ContentsChapter One: British Art for Australia, 1860-1953: An IntroductionChapter Two: ‘Work that would meet the taste of the Colonists’: British art for Antipodean BritonsChapter Three: ‘The civilization of the people’: Australian national galleries and civic humanismChapter Four: ‘A more extended area for English art’: The British world and the imperial art market Chapter Five: ‘The best equipped agent, with as free a hand’: advisors and selectors of British art for AustraliaChapter Six: ‘A Sop to Cerberus’: Collecting the British Old Masters in AustraliaChapter Seven: ‘One of the many Colonial Delusions’: Australian national galleries and British Landscape PaintingChapter Eight: ‘No highly desirable Pre-Raphaelite picture should be spared from home’: the antipodean pursuit of a British acmeChapter Nine: ‘The gap that is steadily widening’: the acquisition of ‘insular’ British Modernism by Australian national galleries, 1900-1953Chapter Ten: Conclusions

    Book SynopsisMuseum activity has, in recent years, undergone major and rapid development in the Arabian Peninsula, with the regeneration of existing museums as well as the establishment of new ones. Alongside such rapid expansion, questions are inevitably raised as to the new challenges museums face in this region and whether the museum, as a central focus of heritage preservation, also runs the risk of overshadowing local forms of heritage performance and preservation. With contributions from leading academics from a range of disciplines and heritage practitioners with first-hand experience of working in the region, this volume addresses the issues and challenges facing museums in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Yemen and the UAE. It focuses on the themes of politics, public engagement and the possibility of a new museum paradigm which might appropriately reflect the interests and culture of the region. Book SynopsisA transporting and illuminating voyage around the globe, through classic and modern literary works that are in conversation with one another and with the world around them *Featured in the Chicago Tribune''s Great 2021 Fall Book Preview * One of Smithsonian Magazine''s Ten Best Books About Travel of 2021*Inspired by Jules Verne’s hero Phileas Fogg, David Damrosch, chair of Harvard University’s department of comparative literature and founder of Harvard’s Institute for World Literature, set out to counter a pandemic’s restrictions on travel by exploring eighty exceptional books from around the globe. Following a literary itinerary from London to Venice, Tehran and points beyond, and via authors from Woolf and Dante to Nobel Prize–winners Orhan Pamuk, Wole Soyinka, Mo Yan, and Olga Tokarczuk, he explores how these works have shaped our idea of the world, and the ways in which the world bleeds into literature. To chart the expansive landscape of world literature today, Damrosch explores how writers live in two very different worlds: the world of their personal experience and the world of books that have enabled great writers to give shape and meaning to their lives. In his literary cartography, Damrosch includes compelling contemporary works as well as perennial classics, hard-bitten crime fiction as well as haunting works of fantasy, and the formative tales that introduce us as children to the world we’re entering. Taken together, these eighty titles offer us fresh perspective on enduring problems, from the social consequences of epidemics to the rising inequality that Thomas More designed Utopia to combat, as well as the patriarchal structures within and against which many of these books’ heroines have to struggle—from the work of Murasaki Shikibu a millennium ago to Margaret Atwood today. Around the World in 80 Books is a global invitation to look beyond ourselves and our surroundings, and to see our world and its literature in new ways.

    Book SynopsisThe sculptural history of the long 1980s has been dominated by New British Sculpture and Young British Artists. Arguing for a more expansive history of British sculpture and its supporting infrastructures, these twenty-three vivid and enthralling interviews with artists, curators, dealers and facilitators working then demonstrate the interconnected networks, diversity of ideas and practices, energy, imagination and determination that transformed British art from being marginal to internationally celebrated. With a substantial introduction, this timely volume provides valuable new insights into the education, work, careers, studios, infrastructures and exhibitions of the artists and facilitators, substantially enlarging our understanding of the era.Trade ReviewThrough twenty-three thoughtful interviews, Imogen Racz’s book surveys the legacies, wit, and energy of British art in the 1980s. The reflections of artists and producers narrate how this decade formed new networks and, importantly, how artists started to democratise art in Britain. * Lisa Le Feuvre, Executive Director, Holt/Smithson Foundation, USA *This immensely readable collection of interviews sheds light on an overlooked decade. Racz’s warm yet incisive questioning elicits enlightening responses, from astute analyses of individual practices to contextual reflections. A vibrant scene emerges, one fuelled by the actions of a wider network of protagonists than is often acknowledged. * Natalie Rudd, Senior Curator, Arts Council Collection, UK *This fascinating and important book re-examines and reframes the narrative of British sculpture in the 1980s, a decade that saw seismic changes as British artists began to be internationally recognised and exhibited. Racz’s interviewees include many of the leading artists, curators and facilitators of the time and their testimony is a vivid record of what it was like to live and work as an artist and of how this changed in the course of the decade and beyond. The difficulties faced by women artists, not only as a result of prejudice but also owing to complex debates about the representation of the female body, come through strongly. The book is particularly engaging when artists speak about their working methods, the sources of their ideas and the experience of making. For all the financial and other limitations of the decade, the reader has the impression that this was a time of freedom, the burgeoning of ideas and a joy in making. The book is essential reading for scholars of this period of art history and will also appeal to anyone interested in the development of art practice in the UK. * Patricia Townsend, artist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and author of Creative States of Mind: Psychoanalysis and the Artist’s Process (2019) *Imogen Racz’s timely and important account of British Art of the Long 1980s unsettles easy narratives of an era recent enough to be part of living memory but long enough ago to enable reflective contemplation. Caught at a moment when the memory of this era threatens to disappear (two of her interviewees are no longer with us), Racz’s book is crafted around a series of vivid, enthralling and sometimes surprisingly candid interviews. By slightly lengthening the timespan and, most revealingly, talking to practitioners, curators, dealers and facilitators who were enmeshed in this history, Racz’s account allows a subtle realignment of the usual co-ordinates. Rather than explode the myths of “New British Sculpture” or the “YBAs”, she reveals underlying connections in the networks of the time and repositions sculpture and object-based practices allowing a more complexly connected history to be revealed. * Joy Sleeman, Professor of Art History and Theory, UCL Slade School of Fine Art, UK *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Introduction Rasheed Araeen, Artist, curator and writer Susan Hiller, Artist Robin Klassnik, Artist and Director of Matt’s Gallery Bill Woodrow, Artist Alison Wilding, Artist Jacqui Poncelet, Artist Richard Deacon, Artist Katherine Gili, Artist Nicholas Pope, Artist Roger Malbert, Art Officer at the Arts Council, then Head of Hayward Gallery Touring Jonathan Harvey, Co-founder and Chief Executive of Acme Studios Mikey Cuddihy, Artist Kate Blacker, Artist Richard Wilson, Artist Antonia Payne, Director of Ikon Gallery, 1981 to 1988 Hilary Gresty, Curator of Kettle’s Yard 1983 to 1989 Veronica Ryan, Artist Langlands & Bell (Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell), Artists Cathy de Monchaux, Artist Laura Ford, Artist James Lingwood, Curator, then Co-director of Artangel Karsten Schubert, Art Dealer Abigail Lane, Artist Afterword Index
