Book SynopsisExperience 60 of the world's greatest adventures on water - from sailing the Nile by felucca and cruising the Canadian Arctic, to exploring Pitcairn Island by cargo ship. With detailed accounts of each route, beautiful photos and practical tips on how to plan your own voyage, Amazing Boat Journeys will help you discover a more rewarding way of travelling. From the seafaring Polynesians to the Chinese Age of Discovery, travel by water shaped the world. That same spirit of exploration compels Lonely Planet writers today to travel by cargo freighter and fishing vessel to the world's most remote islands; to hop onto mailboats in the Bahamas; or to experience life on a historic sail-powered windjammer. These journeys are eclectic and wide-ranging, from the wonder of a glass-bottomed boat ride through Florida springs to the ease of a thatch-roofed kettuvallam exploring Kerala's famed backwaters. Old-fashioned paddlesteamers ply the length of the Mississippi in the style of the 1800s, and cruise ships on the Yangtze feature enthusiastic karaoke in Mandarin. Off-the-beaten-path cruises include Antarctica and Papua New Guinea. On the opposite end of the spectrum from a weeks-long journey over open seas is the charm of seeing a city from the water, whether crossing Victoria Harbour via Hong Kong's classic Star Ferry, viewing the banks of London from the Thames, or traversing Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River. Each trip includes authoritative commentary, awe-inspiring photography, and details of life on board the vessel, similar routes, and how to make the trip happen. Book SynopsisIn Cruise Confidential, Brian David Bruns spills the dirt -- or in this case, the dirty water -- on those romantic, fun-filled vacations at sea. His hilarious chronicle of the year he spent working for Carnival Cruise Lines takes readers down into the areas where the crew works and lives, leaving readers gasping with laughter as they're assaulted nonstop with events that range from the absurd to the utterly bizarre. Stewards fighting over food. Cutlery allowances and other nonsensical rules. What the crew calls those onboard (no, it's not "passengers"). And of course, the sex. An abundance of ready, willing, and able bodies eager for action on a vessel replete with nooks and crannies leads to love in some mighty strange, and seemingly impossible, places. Breezy, entertaining, and informative, Cruise Confidential is essential reading for those planning a cruise or for anyone who just needs a good laugh.

Book SynopsisJourneying by river provides the perfect opportunity to discover new places or see a new side of a familiar destination. Presented here are 50 remarkable and memorable trips chosen because of the stunning scenery they pass through as well as the historic and cultural sites that can be visited from side excursions. Some cover lengthy trips such as a cruise on the Danube that passes through ten countries from its source before emptying into the Black Sea; others are shorter but have a strong, unifying theme, such as Portugal's Douro River that was built on viticulture. In Southeast Asia, the leisurely pace of a river trip along the Yangtze, Mekong or Ayeryawaddy Rivers allows time to take in the ancient cultures and exotic landscapes. Beautiful countryside, wine-rich valleys and dramatic gorges are the highlights of a river journey; the scenery is constant and ever changing. But as well as the natural wonders, there are also remarkable man-made engineering feats to experience as you pass through intricate lock systems or under state-of-the-art bridges. All the important landmarks and cities, scenery and architecture are described for each journey, and each one is illustrated with a route map.

Book SynopsisIn 2011, almost 11 million passengers took a cruise from a U.S. port. Media reports about passenger personal safety while aboard cruise vessels -- including those related to the January 2012 grounding of the cruise vessel Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy, which resulted in 32 deaths -- combined with the increasing number of passengers taking cruises has raised questions about passenger safety and security. With the enactment of the Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA) in 2010, cruise vessels that visit U.S. ports were required to meet certain security and safety requirements, such as having rail heights of at least 42 inches and reporting allegations of certain crimes to the FBI. GAO was asked to review cruise vessel safety as well as security issues -- related to keeping passengers safe from crime. This book reviews the extent to which the cruise vessel industry and federal agencies have implemented the CVSSA, and any actions taken following the Costa Concordia accident to enhance the safety of cruise vessels visiting U.S. ports.
