Anthem Press Captain Philip Beaver's African Journal
Book SynopsisIn 1805, naval officer Captain Philip Beaver (1766–1813) published his African Memoranda: Relative to an Attempt to Establish a British Settlement on the Island of Bulama, on the Western Coast of Africa, in the Year 1792. Beaver’s text in this modern scholarly edition provides an absorbing testimony of his efforts to assist British colonisers in establishing their African settlement. Despite the colonial ambitions of this project, the ‘Bulama Committee’ members were reformists at heart. Their high-minded intentions in purchasing the island and settling it were to demonstrate the anti-slavery principle that propagation by ‘free natives’ would bring ‘cultivation and commerce’ to the region and ultimately introduce ‘civilization’ among them. Beaver’s journal tells the extraordinary account of how the colonists’ ambitions to benefit the African economy and set a precedent of humanitarian labour for the slave-owning lobby in Britain led to the extraordinary emigration of 275 men, women and children in order to put their humanitarian ideals into practice.Trade Review‘Captain Philip Beaver’s utopian ambition was to end Britain’s slave trade by growing tropical pro-duce on a West African island. This excellent edition of his journal, a key document for understand-ing abolitionism, describes the outcasts who signed up for his radical republic, as well as the tragic idealism of this Romantic-era colonising enterprise.’ — Deirdre Coleman, author of Romantic Colo-nization and British Anti-Slavery‘A fascinating account of a disastrous attempt to establish a colony of freed former slaves and poor white folk on an island off the African coast, superbly annotated and introduced by Carol Bolton. A must for anyone studying or teaching the anti-slavery movement and the history of African colonisation.’ — Tim Fulford, Professor of Eng-lish, De Montfort UniversityTable of ContentsList of figures; Acknowledgements; Notes on the Text; Table of Weights and Measures; Introduction; Preface; Author’s Introduction; Part I; Part II; Part III; Appendices; Notes; Bibliography; Index

Channel View Publications Ltd Film-Induced Tourism
Book SynopsisThis research-based monograph presents an introduction to the concept of film-induced tourism, building on the work of the seminal first edition. Many new case studies exploring the relationship between film and TV and tourism have been added and existing cases have been updated. The book incorporates studies on film studio theme parks, the impact of film-induced tourism on communities and the effect of film on tourists’ behaviour. It introduces new content including film-induced tourism in non-Western cultures, movie tours and contents tourism. The book is an essential resource for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of tourism, film and media studies.Trade ReviewSue Beeton has produced a seminal book on film-induced tourism, describing in a clear and stimulating way how this exciting research field has evolved over the years. While different theoretical approaches to film-induced tourism are discussed, most chapters leave from a practical, business-based perspective. This combination makes her book not only interesting but highly relevant as well. -- Stijn Reijnders, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the NetherlandsThis edition of Sue Beeton’s book is truly the only reference you will need to understand film tourism in all its complexities and subtleties. Expanded, updated, more conceptually robust and more case studies makes the book a must read. -- Bob McKercher, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong KongThis new edition of Sue Beeton’s landmark volume is much more than a book on film-induced tourism studies. It is not only the world’s latest handbook to understand the puzzling phenomena of tourism in the very complex media environment of the 21st century, but also potentially one of the most important reference books to study how destination management, community planning and intercultural communication should function in the advanced information society of the future. -- Takayoshi Yamamura, Hokkaido University, JapanSue Beeton’s new edition of Film-Induced Tourism provides a necessary and fresh outlook while being simultaneously complex, well researched and entertaining. -- Ina Reichenberger, University of Wellington, New Zealand * Journal of Tourism Futures, 2018 *...this is an excellent book which succeeds in untangling the many and varied tourism aspects of film and television and effortlessly combines applied theory, academic reflection and personal insight with considerable panache. This accessible book is required reading for anyone wanting to develop research in this area and certainly for academics who are keen to incorporate film tourism within a module or indeed to develop a teaching resource around the topic. -- Simon Curtis, University of Westminster, UK * Tourism Planning & Development, 14:3, 443-445 *Owing to its scientific grounds, the book is a must-have for researchers in the field of creative industries and cultural tourism development, but its simplicity of language complemented with good practice examples makes it highly recommendable also to cultural tourism practitioners and planners. -- Daniela A. Jelincic, IRMO, Croatia * Culturelink, May 2017 *Table of ContentsIntroduction to the Second Edition Part One: Introduction to Film-Induced Tourism 1. Popular Media and Tourism 2. Book SynopsisCorinna Sargood, who illustrated Patience Gray?s Honey from a Weed, spends several months each year in Mexico with her partner, Richard, a furniture maker. They live a simple life, renting a home in the Village in the Valley, south of Mexico City, a life she began in her fifties. When Corinna was fifty, she first travelled to Mexico, with Richard, her partner of a few months standing. She had a commission to illustrate a book by the novelist Angela Carter.?Angela Carter had asked me to make another series of lino cuts to illustrate the second Virago Book of Fairy Tales that she was editing. As I had calculated that it would take about 3 months to complete, it seemed a good opportunity to decamp to another country and to work there. Angela was a great friend of mine.?Corinna and Richard just took a few clothes hoping to establish their first home together. Most of the time they ended up with leaking roofs, dirt floors that became a sea of mud when they stepped out of bed, and the only shower a bucket of water en plein air, behind a make shift plastic sheet. The book is a love story, a memoir and a travel diary. In addition, the book contains Corinna?s escapades in Italy as a young woman.Corinna and Richard now live in Frome, Somerset, where they live a creative life, illustrating and making furniture, in their seventies.

Signal Books Ltd Walking Class Heroes: Pioneers of the Right to
Book SynopsisThe twentieth anniversary of the Countryside & Rights of Way (CRoW) Act in 2020 provides a good opportunity to look back on the doughty band of campaigners who fought for so long to give ramblers their cherished right to roam. This century-old battle brought to the fore a number of larger-than-life characters who were prepared to go to extreme lengths--in some cases even imprisonment--to reclaim the right of access which were taken from the people by the hated Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This book describes the life and work of twenty of these "wilderness warriors", retelling the battles they fought against seemingly intractable politicians and the Establishment and includes memories of personal encounters by the author with many of them. From the nature-loving romantic poet John Clare and access pioneers such as Tom Stephenson and Benny Rothman, to present-day activists and writers such as Jim Perrin, Fiona Reynolds and Kate Ashbrook, Walking Class Heroes describes the contributions made by philanthropists, writers and political militants. Their battlegrounds included the Peak District, Dartmoor and Scotland and their tactics encompassed campaigning journalism, legal dexterity and even mass trespass. Some are no longer with us of course, but several others are continuing the fight for the same kind of public access to the countryside currently enjoyed by our neighbours in Scotland and the rest of Europe. Roly Smith was recently described by a reviewer as "one of Britain's most knowledgeable countryside writers". He has written over ninety books on the British countryside and is vice-president of the Outdoor Writers' and Photographers' Guild, having been its president for twelve years, and is also a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. A journalist by training, Roly was Head of Information Services for the Peak District National Park for thirteen years, where he became known as "Mr Peak District".

Penguin Random House South Africa The Cape Town Book: A Guide to the City's
Book SynopsisThe Cape Town book presents a fresh picture of the Mother City, one that brings together all its stories. From geology and beaches to forced removals and hip-hop, Nechama Brodie, author of the best-selling The Joburg book, has delved deeply into the hidden past of Cape Town to emerge with a lucid and compelling account of South Africa's first city, its landscape and its people. The book's 14 chapters trace the origins and expansion of Cape Town - from the City Bowl to the southern and coastal suburbs, the vast expanse of the Cape Flats and the sprawling northern areas. Offering a nuanced, yet balanced, perspective on Cape Town, the book includes familiar attractions like Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch and the Company's Garden, while also giving a voice to marginalised communities in areas such as Athlone, Langa, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. Many of the images in the book have never been published before, and are drawn from the archives of museums, universities and public institutions. This beautifully illustrated, information-rich book is the definitive portrait of the wind-blown, contradictory city at the southern tip of Africa that more than three million people call home.
