Book Synopsis "A unique look at a unique culture. If you're trying to figure the Japanese out, this book provides another important piece of the puzzle."—Terrie Lloyd, Founder & Publisher, Jap@n Inc.; CEO LINC Media, TokyoIn Japan: A Guide to Traditions, Customs and Etiquette veteran Japanologist Boye Lafayette De Mente unlocks the mysteries of "Kata"—the cultural forms that shape and define Japanese etiquette, character, and world view to this day. These forms are responsible for creating the unique traits and talents which distinguish the Japanese people. Kata governs virtually all interactions in Japan and remains the key to understanding Japanese customs, business etiquette, and daily communication.De Mente's 70 essays include:"The Art of Bowing""The Importance of the Apology""The Compulsion for Quality""Exchanging Name Cards""The Dangers of Speaking English""The Ritual of Tea"In these short, clear essays, De Mente unravels the complexities of Japanese culture by exploring the origin, nature, use, and influence of Kata in Japanese life. By delving into Japanese history and the collective Japanese psyche, readers will experience the modern expressions of this ancient culture and specific way of thinking.Trade Review"Even long-time students of Japan will find the book illuminating and thought-provoking." --Sam Jameson, former Tokyo Bureau Chief of the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times"The book explores many important aspects of Japanese society. With help from his book, visitors will certainly better understand the people and their culture." --Travel Pulse"In Japan, the process of accomplishing a goal is just as significant, if not more significant, than the actual result--a notable contrast to the West. De Mente defines kata as the 'way things are supposed to be done,' and he educates readers on how the concept has shaped Japan throughout its history and the present. […] Japan: A Guide to Traditions, Customs and Etiquette is really an exploration of the Japanese psyche. " -- JQ Magazine

Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe best field guide to observing and understanding the behavior of African mammals and an indispensable tool for naturalists traveling to Africa! The Second Edition has been fully revised and includes a new preface. The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. Other features include: Expert Illustrations Useful maps showing major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks An extensive glossary Tips on wildlife photography A list of organizations working to protect African wildlife "The best behavioral field guide ever."—Sy Montgomery, author of Tamed and Untamed "The book is more than a field guide; it is a valuable tool for conservation."—Kathryn S. Fuller, President, World Wildlife Fund (U.S.A.)Trade ReviewLibrary Journal- Anyone who goes on safari will want to make room in his or her suitcase for this treasure. Estes, who is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute as a research associate, spent over eight years doing fieldwork in Africa and over 17 years leading safaris. His admirable qualifications as an expert on the social ecology of African mammals are reflected in the text, which describes approximately 86 species of African mammals. Introductory chapters give practical advice on how to observe animals, including tips on using binoculars and photographic equipment. Other chapters are arranged by standard taxonomic classification. Estes first covers the characteristics of families and subfamilies and then goes into even more detail on the individual species, charting behaviors one can expect to see and the usual context or meaning. Icons illustrating the behaviors effectively take the reader to a description of the behavior being observed. Appended to the text are a brief suggested reading list, addresses of major wildlife organizations, a glossary of terms, and a thorough index. The only "fault" with this exceptionally well-written and researched book is its size. With a 6 9 trim and some 470 pages of text, this is a fairly large, hefty volume to pack on safari--but it is worth the extra effort, as nothing compares with it. Essential for any traveler to Africa, any student of animals or behavior, any zoo visitor, and any size public library.Table of Contents1. Social and Mating Systems 2. Observing African Mammals 3. Passionate for the animals of the Kalahari, Allison works as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. As he serves the whims of his wealthy clients, he often has to stop the impulse to run as far away from them as he can, as these tourists are sometimes more dangerous than a pride of lions. No one could make up these outrageous-but-true tales: the young woman who rejected the recommended safari-friendly khaki to wear a more fashionable hot pink ensemble; the lost tourist who happened to be drunk, half-naked, and a mTrade Review"Allison's infectious enthusiasm for both the African bush and his job showing its wonders to tourists is readily apparent." --Booklist "His misadventures make Whatever You Do, Don't Run an absorbing read. . . . Book SynopsisAn identification guide to the birds and marine mammals of the Antarctic Peninsula, Drake Passage, and Beagle Channel. It enables visitors to this region - newcomer and seasoned traveler alike - to identify the penguins, whales, seals, seabirds, and other wildlife they encounter on their journey.Trade Review"A must have guide for those visiting Antarctica!"--Ian Paulsen, Birdbooker Report "An eminently practical, accurate, useable and indispensable field guide perfect to bring on your Antarctic cruise. Or even just to keep on your bedside table... There's a lot of information effortlessly packed into this little powerhouse of a guide... When it comes time to cruise, though, Antarctic Wildlife, A Visitor's Guide is the one to grab."--Cathy Taibbi, Examiner.com "It's difficult to appreciate far off consequences of things like melting polar ice-caps, rising ocean levels, and other effects that happen far away or too slowly for the eye to see. That's one reason why I think books like James Lowen's Antarctic Wildlife, A Visitor's Guide are so important. They help provide context for and appreciation of the Antarctic as more than an abstract concept... Antarctic Wildlife is a window offering a view of the southern end of the world... By revealing its treasures, Lowen reminds us why even the most remote places on Earth are worth defending."--Brad Sylvester, Yahoo! News "Spectacular. It covers all wildlife within Antarctica, not just birds. But for the birders reading this, the section on birds is done well."--Jerry Liguori, Utah Birders blog "The identification text is split into two sections, one basic summary for the amateur and beneath this a more detailed description for the avid enthusiast. The supporting images are excellent, chosen for clear field identification, and it's impressive to note that the author took many of them himself... This is an excellent field guide, well laid out with photos and easy-to-access information... It will definitely accompany me on my next trip to Antarctica."--Luxury Travel Review "Thanks to this book, I now want to go to Antarctica more than ever! And if (hopefully, when) I go, it will not be without this book. Antarctic Wildlife: A Visitor's Guide should be required for any cruise-based visitor to the great white continent. And if you want to risk being compelled to pay big bucks to go on such a cruise, I'd also recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in the wildlife of Antarctica."--Grant McCreary, Birder's Library "Recommended for either the real-world or armchair traveler interested in the natural history of the Antarctic... Portable and approachable."--Jean E. Crampon, Library Journal "With a soft flexible binding perfect for thrusting into a knapsack, this book is a primer for all manner of wildlife one might encounter on the seventh continent... Features glorious full-color photos and is chocka-block with charts and indices, tips on choosing a cruise and the best spots to seek out wildlife, as well as an examination of the environmental threats to the region's indigenous residents. With a lively map as end papers, this book works just as well for the armchair traveler as for the hearty explorer."--Christopher Schoppa, Washington Post "This handy ID guide comes as a timely aid to anyone venturing into the Southern Oceans. It covers the areas usually included in tour itineries, from the southern Tip of Argentina to Antarctica proper. The book uses a photo-montage style for the illustrations, an increasingly popular method, which works well here and covers everything from lichens through to whales and birds, so a truly comprehensive guide. Essential for anyone visiting the area."--About Birds, British Trust for Ornithology "Ideal guide for the first-time visitor... The moment you pick up this book it feels good ... exceedingly well-chosen images... Buy it and then start saving for your trip!"--Birdwatch "[D]oes the job admirably... [S]tunning colour plates... [D]etailed and yet written in an easy-to-read and interesting way."--World Birdwatch "I could write this review in just two simple sentences. If you have already experienced the Antarctic, then after reading James Lowen's visitors' guide, you will be packing your bags and booking your next visit. If you haven't been there before, you will still be packing your bags and booking your visit. It's as simple as that. Antarctic Wildlife is a clean, concise and very practical guide to the wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula, Drake Passage and Beagle Channel... A refreshing view of this fascinating continent."--David Lindo, Birdwatching Magazine "[A] fantastic guide ... rich in photography... [T]he penguin behaviour gallery is a joy."--Birds "[S]pecifically designed for anyone travelling from Ushuaia to the Antarctic and who has even the slightest interest in wildlife."--Wildlife Extra "[D]efinitive identification guide... [E]asy-to-use... [O]ne-of-a kind guide... [M]ust-have guide for those visiting Antarctica!"--Guardian.co.uk "[T]akes a quite different approach from that of all previous guides to the area... [H]igh-quality photographic images, skillfully arranged... [F]or those with a general interest in natural history and wanting a small guide, the book succeeds admirably."--British Birds "This book joins a short list of good quality guides that concentrates on the Antarctic region... [H]undreds of superb illustrations... If you are headed far, far south, you will certainly want to have this attractive, informative, and handy book with you."--Avian Review "The book is a must for wildlife enthusiasts who are planning a trip to the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic. However, someone with an interest in this part of the world will find it a nice addition to their library."--FHB, Wildlife Activist "Those of us planning a trip to Antarctica will take this book along and turn to it first when an identification question arises. Those who have already been to Antarctica will wish this book had been with them."--Barbara Williams, IOS Wings Over the Prairie "For those who are contemplating that once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Antarctic, this book provides a handy photographic guide to the birds and mammals that you are likely to encounter... It will be invaluable on deck. It provides more than enough information to satisfy the general visitor, and would serve very well as a field guide for birders."--Birding World "I would ... recommend this book to travellers and experienced naturalists, as the information on the natural history of the area is very good."--Geoff Catpentier, Ontario Birding News "This is a well-done guide and an excellent purchase for academic and large public libraries."--Frederic F. Book SynopsisDervla Murphy's first epic journey from Ireland to India by bicycle, "Full Tilt", is a complete adventure in itself. It is also the first volume of a trilogy of experience that continues with Tibetan Foothold. For the young Irish woman, once she had got herself to India by July 1963, immersed herself in the life of the sub-continent, working for six months in an orphanage for Tibetan children in the refugee camps of Northern India. Here, she fell in love with the 'Tiblets' - the cheerful, tough, uncomplaining, independent and affectionate children of the new Tibet-in-exile. Dervla vividly describes day-to-day life in the camps where hundreds of children are living in squalor while a handful of dedicated volunteers do their best to feed and care for them, attempting to keep disease at bay with limited resources. She pitches in with a helping hand wherever it is needed and finds time to visit the Dalai Lama and his entourage. Dervla's heart-rending account is interwoven with her own observations on the particular cultural and social problems associated with trying to help a people who have lived in isolation from the rest of the world and she becomes a perceptive witness to the inner realities and sometime inadequacies of aid-work. First published in 1966, "Tibetan Foothold" not only confirmed Dervla's status as a traveller, but also revealed her to be a truly independent voice and an acute observer of politics and society.

Book SynopsisOne of the world’s most beloved writers and New York Times bestselling author of A Walk in the Woods and The Body takes his ultimate journey—into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer. In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail—well, most of it. In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand—and, if possible, answer—the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds. A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.
