Starts in Alchi in the Indus Valley and ends in Phanjila, Wanla, Lamayuru, Nurla or Mangyu Trek 8: Markha Valley, 113km / 9 days. Starts in Spituk, southwest of Leh and ends in Hemis near the Indus Valley Known as Little Tibet; for both its landscape and culture, Ladakh lies at the northern tip of India. The region is bisected by the great River Indus and neighbours Tibet and Kashmir. This quiet corner of the Himalaya has developed a strong trekking culture over recent years for adventurous trekkers. Trekking in this remote, high-altitude region is extremely challenging, as paths are not signed and there are only a limited number of villages. However, its magnificent landscape (a huge area full of limitless trekking possibilities), hospitable people, rich heritage and limited number of tourists make Ladakh an amazing destination. The guide includes background information on local culture, history and religion, as well as all the planning detail you need on crucial aspects such as environmental responsibility, health and safety in the mountains, trekking practicalities and preparation for altitude.Table of ContentsMap key Ladakh and northern India Overview map of the trekking routes Preface Introduction Geology Landscape Climate Plants and animals History Trade routes and tourism Current population Buddhism in Ladakh Planning the trip and the trek What to bring from home Health and fitness Visas and permits Money, insurance and dealing with emergencies Communication Local language Tips on travelling in India What to take on trek Using this guide How to get there Travelling and sightseeing in Ladakh On the trek 1 Kharnak 2 Tsarab Chu 3 Darcha to Padum: the classic trek to Zanskar 4 Round Sultanlango 5 Padum to Lamayuru: the classic trek from Zanskar 6 Padum to Lamayuru via the Kanji La 7 Alchi: A circuit over five passes 8 Markha Valley Appendix A Treks overview table Appendix B Stage summaries Appendix C Some Ladakhi language words and phrases Appendix D Glossary Appendix E Embassies and consulates Appendix F Further reading Index of maps Index of place names

Book SynopsisFor a nation of around 1.3 million inhabitants, Estonia has made a real impression on the world stage since regaining its independence less than two decades ago. In the mid-1980s, it was known, if at all, as a Soviet backwater, but the collapse of Communism saw the emergence of a republic determined to make up for lost time and establish itself as a forward-thinking Western state. For all their love of entrepreneurship, the digital age and all it has to offer, Estonians are quiet and reserved, hardworking, fiercely jealous of their privacy, and lovers of nature. They can seem distant, almost rude on first meeting, but if you make the effort to get to know them, their sincerity and self-deprecating humor shine through. As one businessman who works in Tallinn observed, “an Estonian friend is a friend for life.” Culture Smart! Estonia is for any visitor—whether businessperson, student, or tourist—who wants to understand Estonian society and be culturally prepared for a visit. We trace the country’s turbulent history and try to see how the past has shaped the collective and personal values of today’s Estonians. We look at the Estonian people at work, at play, and at home, and offer tips to help you get along with Estonian colleagues and acquaintances—without any awkward silences!Trade ReviewCulture Smart! has come to the rescue of hapless travellers...' • Coast to Coast (2 ed): St Bees to Robin Hood's

Rucksack Readers Coast to Coast (2 ed): St Bees to Robin Hood's

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEngland's most popular walk runs for 184 miles (296 km) across the north of England from St Bees on the Irish Sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea. It passes through three National Parks - the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors - with fine scenery, welcoming pubs and plenty of accommodation. Devised by the legendary Wainwright, the Coast to Coast attracts walkers worldwide. The new edition is richly illustrated with 150 photographs, many by professional landscape photographer Karen Frenkel. There are 25 pages of colourful new mapping (scale 1:55,000) with cumulative distances, a 25-metre contour interval and points of interest marked. Each section has its own altitude profile, with details of where refreshments are available. Much detail has been added to route descriptions, in many places clarified by extra photographs with custom overlays to clarify route detail. Major route options have been added and mapped, and many updates made. The format is lightweight, robust and rainproof.Trade ReviewThe book is a visual treat, printed in full colour throughout with hundreds of wonderful photos. The spiral bound format makes it easy to use, folding back completely to the open pages. The paper stock is high quality with a shiny, rain resistant finish, so you don’t have to worry about the book falling to pieces when the weather turns bad. ... The route descriptions are much improved from the first edition and tricky sections like Greenup Edge now have special mentions and more detail. The addition of route alternatives in this edition is also a huge improvement. We now have notes and maps for Helm Crag and St. Sunday Crag. The omission of the Helvellyn/Striding Edge route is noted in the book and I agree with the sentiment – this is not a route for your typical C2C walker. The Keld to Reeth leg has high and low level options too, with the low level being treated as the ‘normal’ route – this seems to match the choice made by the majority of C2C walkers now, with only a small percentage of walkers using the high route. -- Stuart Greig * lonewalker.net *Sandra Bardwell's guide is the latest, and possibly best-presented of all. It is spiral-bound, waterproof and gloriously illustrated in colour. Mapping, provided by Footprint, ... is detailed and easy to read; the amount of information about planning and tackling the route is excellently judged, as is the background detail on history, wildlife and AW himself. -- John Manning * tgo magazine *This is one of the very best guidebooks I've ever encountered. It is a beautifullly crafted book which fits neatly into a rucksack. Sandra Bardwell ... is to be commended for producing this well-researched and lovely guide which follows the Wainwright route. ... The maps are excellent: they are very clear and easy to follow. I also like the Facilities along the Route section on page 7 ... -- Joyce Wilson * Keswick Reminder *If [this] book had been available at the time, I could have saved myself hours of retracing footsteps ... The book has comprehensive directions ... as well as very clear and detailed maps for each section. ... All in all, this is an excellent guide which should get the walker from the Irish Sea to the North Sea without putting a foot wrong. It is handsomely turned out and seems tough and durable. -- Brian Gilsenan * Irish Mountain Log *

Rucksack Readers Cleveland Way (2 ed)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Cleveland Way is one of England's oldest and best-loved National Trails. It runs for 108 miles (174 km) around the North York Moors National Park, starting inland at Helmsley, offering panoramic views over the vales of York and Mowbray and from the Cleveland Hills. After reaching the coast at Saltburn, it heads south along the dramatic sea cliffs, with their tales of shipwrecks and smugglers, to end at Filey. The route features prehistoric burial mounds, ancient castles, abbeys and Roman remains, with more recent traces of industrial history. Vast areas of heather moorland are host to intriguing wildlife. The Cleveland Way is easily accessible by public transport and is divided into easy stages by villages of character with friendly pubs and accommodation. Above all, the walker is welcomed with warm Yorkshire hospitality. The second edition of this guidebook contains all you need to plan and enjoy your Cleveland Way walk: updated route descriptions, background on geology, pre-history and history, illustrated information about wildlife, mapping of the entire route on 11 pages at 1:82,500, information about public transport and travel. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 95 colour photos and is printed on rain-resistant paper.Trade ReviewThe guide is a testament to excellent research, writing and photography. -- Malcolm Hodgson * Cleveland Way Trail Manager *This Rucksack Readers guidebook maintains their high standards. The pages on heritage are good with a fine section on the geology of the area and the iron and alum which were mined in the areas through which the path passes. The illustrations are superb and there are 90 colour photos which means that on completion you can refresh your memory of the walk. I particularly like the section on the History of the Cleveland Way which highlights the work of the pioneers as much of the walk has been used from the early days of leisure walking in England. In future l will be using this guide when on the Cleveland Way … because l like this book which has all the information that l need in a compact format which can be easily used on windy days. -- From an online blog * Bill's Walks. *I knew Alan Falconer and Bill Cowley, both authors of guides to the Cleveland Way. ... I’ve visited and written about virtually all the places mentioned in the new guidebook. I am greatly impressed by its facts, figures and presentation of the Cleveland Way. -- The late W R Mitchell * Editor of The Dalesman *

Reardon Publishing The Cotswolds illustrated Town & Village Guide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn A - Z illustrated Town and Village guide to what you can see in the Cotswolds, with word and pen the Author brings to life this wonderful part of England, show and explaining what you can see as you explore the Cotswolds. From the strange sounding Cotswold towns and villages with this guide you will be shown sides of the Cotswolds that the average visitor often misses, the text is brought to life with well over 100 pen and ink sketches of Gargoyles and Hobbit like church entrances, Public monuments to medieval punishment tools, Castles to Magic stones, a life time of local knowledge has gone into this book. The beauty of the Cotswolds is not new, it is not something that has just come about recently, it is, you might even say, as old as the hills themselves. But it is not only beauty to be found in these hills, they are also rich in history, the Romans came, stayed a while and then left. They were about the first to leave us monuments of their advanced way of life that we can understand today, then came the Saxons, the Danes and the Normans. Each left something by which to remember them. In more recent times great houses have been built and are there for all to see. The Cotswolds intriguing, majestic, even cruel in its own way. There is a bigness that is breathtaking, especially during the summer, a loneliness that can be frightening during the winter, but always a grandeur, as powerful as an exciting tale that not one little bit must be missed. Perhaps early man found the excitement of these hills a good reason for settling in them. They offered a natural fortification in many instances for settlements, often with views over the valley of the Severn, where animals could be hunted and fish caught in the river. It is hoped that your visit to the Cotswolds will be most enjoyable, and if, with the help of these pages, more memorable, then the object of this publication will have been achieved

This long distance circular walking route takes in the very best of the Peak District from the wilds of Kinder Scout to the dramatic Eastern Edges, gentle pastoral landscape of Chatsworth and the beautiful limestone dales of the White Peak. Starting and finishing at Hayfield, Stage One of this walking route skirts around Kinder Scout then heads through the Woodlands Valley to Hathersage. Stage Two traces the Eastern Edges southwards high above the Derwent Valley to reach Baslow. Stage Three is gentler, with a stroll through Chatsworth Park then across the mystical landscape of Stanton Moor to Youlgrave. Stage Four heads up through the beautiful limestone valleys of the White Peak to Tideswell. Stage Five explores Eyam before heading over to Castleton. Stage Six traverses the famous Great Ridge over to Edale and then follows the packhorse route back to Hayfield. 'Travel Book of the Week' in the "Mail on Sunday" when it was first published in summer 2007 and book number 5 in "The Inn Way..." series of walking guidebooks from the award-winning publisher of "The Inn Way" and "Walking Weekends" books.

Book SynopsisFollowing the success of "A Pocket Guide to Snowdonia's best Mountain Walks" published in 2007, Mara Books have launched Carl Rogers' new book "Mountain and Hill Walking in Snowdonia", a two-volume in-depth pocket sized guide to mountain walks in the Snowdonia National Park. Every hill group in the National Park is covered in detail and the book is lavishly illustrated in full colour with the author's photographs and relief maps. Volume 2 covers the lesser-known southern half of Snowdonia - Moelwynion, Rhinogydd, Arenig, Arans, Cadair Idris and Dyfi hills, as well as outlying areas like the Tarrens, Snowdonia's southern-most summits, and the Berwyns, lying just outside the National Park boundary. Every summit of note in Snowdonia is covered by at least one route, all the routes are full-day circular walks and include some low-end scrambles. The routes are a mix of well known 'classic rounds' such as the Snowdon Horseshoe and Moel Siabod, as well as many lesser-known routes and summits. Each route is described in detail and is accompanied by a full colour relief map as well as information on official parking, distances and height gained.
