Bradt Travel Guides South American Handbook
Book SynopsisSouth America will uplift your senses with the tropical sun rising over a palm-fringed beach, or a bracing wind blowing off the southern ice fields. Light can be blinding on the high-altitude salt flats, or dense and green in the rain forest. The gentle scent of the ripe guava fills the countryside, but the fire of chilli from that innocent-looking jar will electrify your taste buds. Explore the cities of prehispanic civilizations and the churches of colonial times, immerse yourself in the present with its celebrations and social dilemmas. Where past and present mix, there are festivals, crafts and gastronomy, from the humble potato in its umpteen varieties to the most sophisticated of wines. If you are looking for something more active, throw yourself off a giant sand dune into a lake, or climb the highest mountain. Walk in the tree-tops of the rainforest, at eye level with birds and monkeys, dance in an Andean village square to a solo violin, or to techno brega in a warehouse-sized club in Belem. Whatever South America inspires you to do, you will find that there is no limit to the passion that it fires within you. In this era of countless websites which bring images and information from every barrio and pueblito, the South American Handbook gives the details on how to navigate between each place, big or small. It is a celebration of the spirit of adventure and independence that characterizes travel in this part of the world. Drawing on the expertise of correspondents in the region and the experiences of travellers, this 94th edition of the Handbook provides the thread from Acandi to Ushuaia and everywhere you may wish to stop off in between. The guide provides comprehensive coverage of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, the Guianas, and the Falkland Islands. * Extensive coverage of the most famous and lesser-known sites, from the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu and iconic Christ the Redeemer to the wilderness of the Guianas and rolling hills of Uruguay * Highlights section so you know what not to miss * Practical information on how to get to each country and around, plus suggested itineraries to help you plan your trip, whether you are travelling for a week or a month * Well-researched cultural and historical background sections available as an online resource * Tips for travelling with your kids * Overview map for each country and region which includes 'Don't miss' destinations, local information on how to get around and detailed street maps where relevant * Authoritative advice and recommendations to ensure you find the best accommodation, restaurant or local tour operator Footprint's legendary South American Handbook covers the continent in amazing detail, enabling you to explore for yourself. From spectacular carnivals to shuddering glaciers, this guide will open your way to the irresistible spirit of the world's greatest continent.Trade ReviewI took the 1990 edition of the SAH - a lovely little brick of a book with a jaguar on the front - with me when I went to live in Buenos Aires and took it all over Argentina with me on my many trips. For all its listings and facts, I never really thought of it as a practical guide; for me it was more of a dream-Bible, the wispy thin pages full of possibilities of travel and exploration. It got nicked when I was in Salta and I was inconsolable. -- Chris Moss The TelegraphTable of Contents1) Planning your trip 2) Argentina 3) Bolivia 4) Brazil 5) Chile 6) Colombia 7) Ecuador 8) Paraguay 9) Peru 10) Uruguay 11) Venezuela 12) Guianas 13) Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas 14) Practicalities 15) Colour Maps

Rucksack Readers Kintyre Way (4 ed)
Book SynopsisThis fully waymarked trail runs for 101 miles/162 km southward from the beautiful natural harbour of Tarbert to Macrihanish, near the Mull of Kintyre. Criss-crossing the entire peninsula, you pass castles, abbeys and prehistoric remains, sometimes walking along rugged coastline, sometimes high on forestry tracks with glorious views over Arran, the Firth of Clyde and towards Ireland. You will enjoy many wildlife sightings in this peaceful area, famous as Scotland only "mainland island". Since it opened (2006) the route has changed in places. The 2023 edition of this essential guidebook contains all you need to plan and enjoy your holiday: 11 pages with mapping showing the whole route (1:70,000); the Way step-by-step, with summaries of distance, terrain and refreshment stops; habitats and wildlife; whisky-making in Kintyre; side-trip to the island of Gigha; and planning information for travel by car, ferry, bus and plane. The book is printed on rainproof paper throughout, and has over 90 colour photographs.Trade ReviewThe route is clearly described, lest any marker posts have disappeared, and there are references to features of interest such as archaeological sites along the route. This description, and the photos, will be particularly helpful for newcomers to Kintyre, because they will know what to expect. On the other hand, walkers on the sections Claonaig to Clachan and Machrihanish to Dunaverty should also carry an Ordnance Survey map, because the maps in this book are useful for planning purposes but not for navigation on the ground. And the book isn't merely practical. It's beautifully illustrated with colour photos that will surely tempt strollers and island-hoppers as well as serious hikers to visit Kintyre. The historical background, economic activity and the making of Scotch whisky are all described in clear language that makes it a pleasure to read. Excerpt from a review at Amazon.co.uk I am really enjoying "every step" of the Way; it's an excellent book with so much intricate detail ... The photographs are unique, and would make a good Argyll calendar. For me, the book evokes many memories, for I've lived in these parts all my life, and they beckon me back. Oro Editions Athens Unveiled: A Portrait of Late 19th-Century
Book SynopsisEvery year millions of travellers arrive in Athens eager to catch a glimpse of the ancient city and savour its classical heritage. But what about the late nineteenth century Athens with her neoclassical buildings, wide avenues and literary salons? An Athens where music wafted from King Otto’s palace and the aristocracy waltzed under crystal chandeliers. A city of dignitaries, scholars and architects drawing plans and reworking them, leaving their mark on every dimension of the young capital. An Athens where commoners hovered around dimly lit fires and children played in the mud amidst the ancient ruins. Where criminals settled disputes with drawn knives and prostitutes roamed the ports luring sailors into filthy, smoke-filled taverns. Where Greek refugees lived in wind-swept streets with no sewers or running water, singing about their troubles under the stars. An Athens where intellectuals, writers, poets, and artists converged in local cafés planning the future of the newly founded nation, discussing philosophy, literature, and their shared passion for reclaiming Greece for the Greeks. Athens Unveiled pays homage to the people, streets, and neighbourhoods of late nineteenth century Athens, where some of the finest neoclassical buildings still stand next to abandoned mansions, brothels, and old factories; where people still bargain the prices of clothes and produce on the old streets of commerce and where young artists create powerful murals, bringing everything about the city into sharp focus.Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION 9 ATHENIAN RENAISSANCE 21 FORGOTTEN GLORY 75 THE HEART OF COMMERCE 129 NEIGHBORHOODS OF ILL REPUTE 185 A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN 239 MUSEUM INDEX 285 MURALISTS 293 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 297
