  • Sri Lanka

    Bradt Travel Guides Sri Lanka

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe new seventh edition of Bradt's Sri Lanka remains the most detailed and comprehensive guidebook to this alluring island nation. Written by Philip Briggs, one of the world's most experienced and highly regarded guidebook writers, this thoroughly updated guide provides detailed coverage of every aspect of this diverse and compact country, from idyllic tropical coastlines to mist-shrouded tea plantations and time-warped colonial homesteads. Alongside in-depth sections on all major beach resorts, archaeological sites, historic towns and national parks, it introduces adventurous travellers to intriguing lesser-known sites and emergent destinations inaccessible for decades prior to 2009, when the civil war ended. Beach holidays are a year-round attraction, while fantastic Buddhist-affiliated UNESCO World Heritage Sites range from the massive dagobas of Anuradhapura, built in pre-Christian times on a scale rivalling Egyptian pyramids, to Dambulla's exquisitely painted cave temples. Wildlife-viewing opportunities abound, and this guide provides unparalleled, illustrated advice on making the most of these. Asia's densest elephant and leopard populations thrive in an extensive network of national parks, complemented by fine whale and dolphin-watching, and 450 bird species including 30 occurring in no other country. Extensive hotel and restaurant listings, covering everything from exclusive boutique hotels to shoestring homestays, have been cherry-picked based on the author's personal inspection of hundreds of properties countrywide. Sri Lanka's increasingly renowned cuisine features strongly, as does its growing focus on wellness tourism including Ayurveda therapies. This guidebook differs further from competitors by catering for truly independent travellers, providing 70-plus visitor-focused maps covering all major towns and resorts, clear directions for public transport, and off-the-beaten-track information. Following a tourist boom in the south, and the gradual opening of the north and east to independent travel, tourism jumped 15% in the two years to 2018. Following COVID-19 and a 2019 terrorism incident, Sri Lankan tourism is again welcoming visitors, with infrastructure benefitting from recent investment in trains, which provide comfortable, efficient and inexpensive public transport. Whether you're into wildlife, culture, beaches or cuisine - and whether you seek luxury or budget travel - Bradt's Sri Lanka will address your every need for an enjoyable visit to this bewitching and varied country.Table of ContentsIntroduction PART 1 GENERAL INFORMATION Chapter 1 History and Background History, Government and politics, Economy, National flag, People, Language, Religion, Education, Culture Chapter 2 The Natural World Geography and climate, Natural history and conservation Chapter 3 Practical Information When to visit, Itineraries, Tour operators, Tourist information, Red tape, Getting there and away, Security and safety, What to take, Money, Budgeting, Getting around, Accommodation, Eating and drinking, Public holidays and festivals, Shopping, Media and communications, Cultural etiquette Chapter 4 Health and Safety Preparations, Common medical problems, Other safety concerns PART 2 COLOMBO AND SURROUNDS Chapter 5 Colombo History, Orientation, Getting there and away, Getting around, Crime and safety, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Bars and nightlife, Shopping, Other practicalities, What to see and do, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Muthurajawela Wetland Sanctuary Chapter 6 The Coast from Negombo to Kalpitiya Negombo, Waikkal, Chilaw and surrounds, Puttalam, The Kalpitiya Peninsula Chapter 7 Inland of Colombo The A1 towards Kandy and Kurunegala, Kurunegala and surrounds, Avissawella and the Kelani Valley Railway Chapter 8 The Western Resort Coast: Bentota, Kosgoda and Hikkaduwa Kalutara and surrounds, Bentota and surrounds, The coast from Kosgoda to Ambalangoda and Madu Wetlands, Hikkaduwa, PART 3 THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE Chapter 9 Dambulla, Sigiriya and Surrounds Dambulla, Historic sites south and west of Dambulla, Sigiriya, Habarana, The elephant parks: Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Chapter 10 Polonnaruwa History, Orientation, Getting there and away, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Other practicalities, Tour operators and bicycle hire, What to see and do, Around Polonnaruwa Chapter 11 Anuradhapura and Surrounds History, Getting there and away, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Other practicalities, What to see and do, Mihintale Monastery, Thanthirimale Temple, Wilpattu National Park PART 4 NORTHERN AND EASTERN PROVINCES Chapter 12 Northern Province Mannar Island, Jaffna Chapter 13 Eastern Province When to visit, Further information, Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Batticaloa, Ampara and Gal Oya National Park, Arugam Bay PART 5 KANDY AND THE HILL COUNTRY Chapter 14 Kandy and Surrounds History, Getting there and away, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Other practicalities, What to see and do, Mahiyanganaya and surrounds Chapter 15 High Hill Country: Adam's Peak, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, Hatton, Adam's Peak and Nallathanniya, Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains National Park, Haputale, Bandarawela, Ella Chapter 16, Low Hill Country: Kitulgala, Ratnapura and Sinharaja Kitulgala, Ratnapura, Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Kanneliya Forest Reserve PART 6 GALLE AND THE DEEP SOUTH Chapter 17 Tissamaharama and the Southern Safari Circuit Embilipitiya, Udawalawe National Park, Wellawaya, Buttala, Kataragama, Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Yala National Park, Bundala National Park, Hambantota Chapter 18, The Southern Resort Coast: Tangalle, Matara and Weligama Bay Tangalle, Towards Matara, Matara and surrounds, Mirissa, Weligama and Midigama Chapter 19, Galle and Surrounds History, Getting there and away, Getting around, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Other practicalities, What to see and do, Unawatuna and the Rumassala Peninsula, The coast east to Koggala Appendix 1 Language Appendix 2 Glossaries General glossary, Annotated glossary of key historical, legendary and mythical figures Appendix 3 Further information Index

Book SynopsisThe medieval city of Ypres will forever be associated with the Great War, especially by the British. From 1914 to 1918 it was the key strongpoint in the northern sector of the Western Front, and the epic story of its defence has taken on almost legendary status. The city and the surrounding battlefields are also among the most visited sites on the Western Front, and Paul Reed's walking guide is an essential travelling companion for anyone who is eager to explore them either on foot, by bike or by car. His classic book, first published as Walking the Salient over ten years ago, is the result of a lifetime's research into the battles for Ypres and the Flemish landscape over which they were fought. He guides the walker to all the key locations - Ypres itself, Yser, Sanctuary Wood, Bellewaarde Ridge, Zillebeke, Hill 60, Passchendaele, Messines, Kemmel and Ploegsteert are all covered. There are walks to notable sites behind the lines, around Poperinghe, Vlamertinghe and Brandhoek. And, for this second edition which he has revised, updated and expanded, he has provided new photographs and included two entirely new walks covering the Langemarck and Potijze areas.Walking Ypres brings the visitor not only to the places where the armies clashed but to the landscape of monuments, cemeteries and villages that make the Ypres battlefields among the most memorable sites of the Great War.

Transylvania (the ''land beyond the forest'') is a wild, wooded, intensely romantic region, filled with mountains and gorges, myths and legends, dragons, bears, wolves - and vampires. Bram Stoker called it ''one of the wildest and least-known parts of Europe'', a description that remains true today. Book SynopsisDog-friendly Weekends is the first all-encompassing, practical and inspirational guidebook to dog-friendly holidays in Britain. Not only does it cover dog-friendly accommodation and pubs, but most importantly, each chapter offers a well-rounded weekend away, with recommendations on attractions where the dog is allowed and great walks for all abilities. Travel journalist and dog-travel expert Lottie Gross has spent several years travelling thousands of miles around Britain with her canine companions sifting out places which are truly dog-friendly from those which are simply dog-tolerant. Drawing on her experiences, and on her research as the Times Expert Traveller dog-friendly writer, she has come up with a unique guidebook that pinpoints all the best places to go and things to do when travelling around Britain with your dog. Going on holiday without your dog is never the ideal solution, which is why this book offers inspiration for 50 dog-friendly weekends away in Britain, including museums where you can take the dog inside on a rainy day, heritage railways where the dog rides free, and countless excellent walks the whole family can enjoy. Island-hopping, city breaks, and coast and countryside romps are all included, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands. This is also a useful, practical guide that addresses the questions all dog-owners have to consider when travelling with their pets. Is there space by the table for my dog? Can the dog come down to breakfast? Can the dog be left in the room? Each place included has been vetted (no pun intended) by the author, whose first-hand experience is supplemented with contributions from experts on safe and responsible travel with your dog, ensuring every owner is well equipped to give the whole family a memorable break away.Trade Review'This is the travel guide you need... Book SynopsisSmitten by Scotland since childhood, travel writer Rebecca Gibson moved to Moray and started exploring her new home region on foot to produce this new title in Bradt's award-winning series of Slow travel guides to UK regions. Walkers, cyclists, wildlife lovers, families, history and folklore enthusiasts, and foodies are all catered for, with coverage of a wide range of attractions. As the only comprehensive guidebook to North East Scotland in print, it also contains all the practical information you could need to plan and enjoy time in this thrillingly diverse yet largely under-explored part of Britain. This region of mountains and coasts, ancient Caledonian pine forests and salmon-rich rivers harbours much to enthral and surprise. Long famous among hillwalkers, mountaineers and nature lovers, the Cairngorms is the UK's largest National Park and holds five of its six tallest summits - but also abounds in fairy folklore. Balmoral Estate has been a royal residence since Queen Victoria's reign, while Aberdeenshire - with its unique language, Doric - has Scotland's highest density of castles and numerous Pictish stone circles among an astounding 30,000 sites of historical and archaeological interest. Between Inverness and Aberdeen lies the less-familiar region of Moray, which hosts the world's most northerly population of bottle-nosed dolphins, Scotland's oldest independent museum, and Forres, where Shakespeare's Macbeth met the three witches. Here the Scots language and culture are celebrated through gatherings such as fire festivals. This guidebook's Slow approach to travel fits with a growing ethos of sustainability in this part of Scotland, from Findhorn Ecovillage to a celebration of locally sourced, artisan and organic food alongside the well-known products of whisky, Aberdeen Angus beef and River Dee salmon. Key heritage attractions are described in intimate detail - but so too are opportunities to see some of Scotland's most special wildlife, from pinewood-dwelling crested tits to high-altitude specialists like ptarmigan. Whether you are keen to visit castles or indulge in whisky-tastings amid Britain's highest concentration of distilleries, to hike among Cairngorm's remote mountains or to stride boldly along miles upon miles of coastline, discover North East Scotland with Bradt's unique Slow guide.Table of ContentsGoing Slow in NE Scotland Practical Information The Guide Chapter 1 Cairngorms National Park: West Chapter 2 Cairngorms National Park: East Chapter 3 Central Moray Chapter 4 Moray Coast Chapter 5 Banff & Buchan (Aberdeenshire) Chapter 6 Formartine & The Garioch (Aberdeenshire) Chapter 7 Marr (Aberdeenshire) Chapter 8 Aberdeen City Appendices Accommodation Index

Both these routes cross the hills of the island's interior and can be combined to make an interesting longer walk.Table of ContentsPreface Map key Overview map Introduction How to get there The best time to walk Parking Accommodation Public transport Climate Tides and times Maps and compasses Geology Nature along the footpaths History Raad ny Foillan: The Way of the Gull Douglas to Castletown via Langness Castletown to Port St Mary Port St Mary to Port Erin Port Erin to Peel Peel to Kirk Michael Kirk Michael to Point of Ayre Point of Ayre to Ramsey Ramsey to Laxey Laxey to Douglas The Millennium Way Ramsey to Crosby Crosby to Castletown Bayr ny Skeddan: The Herring Way Peel to Round Table Round Table to Junction with the Millennium Way Junction with the Millennium Way to Castletown Appendix A Glossary of Manx words Appendix B Selected bibliography Appendix C Route summary Appendix D IOM Coastal Footpath accommodation list
