    Bradt Travel Guides Suriname

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThis new, thoroughly updated edition of Bradt's Suriname remains the only dedicated English-language guidebook to this emergent and largely unspoiled ecotourism destination and offers by far the greatest depth of coverage available. It is also the first guidebook in any language with a comprehensive section on the Upper Suriname River, an exciting and remote area serviced by around 20 small lodges. Detailed coverage of all accessible parks and reserves is included, including the three main marine-turtle viewing sites and the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), with information geared to people joining organised tours as well as those who prefer the independent travel approach. Also included are detailed maps and town plans - many of which are unavailable in any other resource and have been drawn by the author using GPS specifically for this book. Peaceful and politically stable, Suriname is one of the world's most thinly populated countries. Its Caribbean coastline is famed for its peerless turtle-watching opportunities, while the interior is swathed by a vast tract of pristine Amazonian rainforest, rich in wildlife and accessible only by air or along the tropical waterways that incise it. The guide includes a detailed introduction to the diverse wildlife and intriguing history of the only former Dutch colony in South America, along with detailed regional coverage of the tropical coastline, the Historic Inner City of the culturally diverse capital Paramaribo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the thrilling opportunities for exploration afforded by the jungle-swathed interior.Trade ReviewRecommended reading The Sunday TelegraphTable of ContentsIntroduction PART ONE GENERAL INFORMATION Chapter 1 Background Information Geography and location, Climate, Government, Economy, History, People, Language, Religion Chapter 2 Natural History Flora, Mammals, Reptiles and amphibians, Birds, Invertebrates, Marine life Chapter 3 Practical Information When to visit, Itineraries and highlights, Tour operators, Red tape, Getting there and away, Safety and security, What to take, Money and budgeting, Getting around, Accommodation, Eating and drinking, Public holidays and festivals, Shopping, Media and communications Chapter 4 Health Preparations, On the road PART TWO PARAMARIBO AND THE COASTAL BELT Paramaribo and the coastal belt: an overview, Highlights Chapter 5 Paramaribo History, Getting there and away, Getting around, Tourist information, Tour operators, Safety, Where to stay, Where to eat and drink, Entertainment and nightlife, Shopping, Other practicalities, What to see and do Chapter 6 Commewijne Commewijne Plantation Loop, Matapica Beach, Warappa Creek, Stolkertsijver Chapter 7 Marowijne Moengo, Albina, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, Galibi Nature Reserve Chapter 8 Saramacca, Coronie and Nickerie Groningen, Lower Coppename River, Coronie, Wageningen, Nieuw Nickerie, Bigi Pan Chapter 9 Wanica and Para Lelydorp, Santigron, Domburg, Onverwacht, Paranam and around, Jodensavanne and the east bank, Zanderij and around PART THREE THE INTERIOR The Interior: an overview, Highlights Chapter 10 Brokopondo Bergendal and around, Brownsweg and Stoneiland, Brownsberg Nature Park, Brokopondo and the Afobaka Dam Chapter 11 Upper Suriname Getting there and away, Other practicalities, Atjoni and Pokigron, Downriver from Atjoni, Jawjaw and New Aurora, Pikin Slee, Botopassie and around, Towards Djumu, Kajana and the Gran Rio Chapter 12 The Deep Interior Boven Coesewijne Nature Reserve, Central Suriname Nature Reserve (CSNR), Blanche Marie Falls, Apoera, Avanavero Falls, Arapahu Island, Kwamalasamutu, Kabalebo Nature Reserve, Palumeu and Mount Kasikasima, Upper Marowijne Appendix 1 Language Appendix 2 Further Information Index

Book SynopsisAlexandra David-Neel was the first European woman to meet the Dalai Lama and in 1924 became the first to enter the forbidden Tibetan capital, Lhasa. She had already spent a decade travelling through China, living in a cave on the Tibetan border, where she learned about Buddhism from hermits, mystics and bandits.Magic and Mystery in Tibet records the mysterious, magical world David-Neel discovered in Tibet. Among the extraordinary events she describes are the Tibetan mystics who could live naked in temperatures below freezing, the psychic sports practiced in Tibet, the lamas who could run for incredible distances without rest, food or drink and the monks who could defy gravity.Trade ReviewPrecisely the person to explore Tibet... Her accounts of Tibetan religious ceremonies and beliefs are the fullest and best we have. -- The New Yorker * . *A line of women explorers (have) won adulation in far-flung lands... Perhaps the most extraordinary of all was Alexandra David-Neel, the French-Belgian explorer, who travelled to the closed city of Lhasa, and became a Buddhist mystic in the early 20th century. -- The Times * . *Wonderfully lucid. -- Alan Watts * . *A fascinating account of the spiritual training of Tibetan monks and mystics... an intriguing book... Book SynopsisRespected and award winning New Zealand travel writer Peter Janssen uncovers some of the North Island’s unknown treasures that most New Zealanders didn’t even know existed! “I have travelled just about every road and visited every town in the country, but I’m drawn to the quirky places bypassed by travellers and the eccentric characters that have great stories to tell. This book is a varied collection of places that I think are worth a detour,” says Peter. In the South Island, how about a visit to the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, Monkey Island or Sock World? Or our very own ‘Niagara Falls’ which plummets to a deathdefying fall of about half a metre. You can visit New Zealand’s only solar salt works, or Harwood Hole with the deepest and longest cave system in the country or Quartzopolis Town of Light. Worth a Detour is divided into geographic areas, each entry includes descriptions, history, directions and addresses. Book SynopsisThis new thoroughly updated edition of Bradt's Namibia remains the essential guide for a successful visit to this vast country - more than twice the size of Germany but with less than 3% of the population. Written by expert author and long-standing tour specialist Chris McIntyre, this sixth edition incorporates all the most recent changes, including unrivalled coverage of places to stay and eat, from small, personal guesthouses to classy hotels and upmarket game lodges, and detailed information for self-drivers (including personally researched and checked GPS coordinates) as well as for fly-in and guided safaris. There's also in-depth coverage of wildlife and where to see it, including a new full-colour wildlife field guide section, covering mammals, reptiles and amphibians, marine life and birds. Two background chapters covering everything from history and politics to people, ethnic groups and culture are complemented by two chapters on planning, preparation, health and safety and two on the practicalities of getting around and camping and walking in the bush (including canoeing). Helping you to discover Namibia in detail, 13 chapters offer a regional breakdown, from the capital, Windhoek to the Southern Kalahari, Namib desert, Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast, Etosha National Park, and the Kavango and Zambezi regions in the extreme northeast, including excursions into neighbouring Botswana. With sweeping landscapes and empty roads, Namibia has long captured the imaginations of travellers and photographers. Its immense emptiness offers majestic sand dunes, seemingly endless gravel plains, vast tracts of farmland and rugged mountains hiding galleries of ancient Bushman rock art. Add to this the wildlife and the unexpected beauty of the rivers that define the country's northern and southern boundaries, and it's easy to see why Namibia attracts lovers of the great outdoors.Trade ReviewRecommended reading in Travel Africa magazine "Bradt's Namibia travel guide is invaluable for planning an itinerary." Bradt Travel Guides Sao Tome & Principe

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisBradt's São Tomé & Príncipe is the only standalone guide to Africa's second-smallest country, considered by some to be the centre of the world as it is the site of the closest point to the intersection of the Greenwich Meridian and the Equator. In this comprehensively updated third edition, Kathleen Becker - regular tour leader for a major tour operator on São Tomé - provides priceless insider information to the best spots for sleeping, eating and drinking, hiking, watersports, turtle watching and rainforest hikes. Since the previous edition of this guide, a wider choice of accommodation has become available: trendy guesthouses, a surf lodge, a homestay and new plantation tourism on Príncipe to name a few options. Maybe the biggest surprise to visitors is the gourmet food available here, from the 'best chocolate in the world' to the freshest fish, straight from the beach alongside the Equator mark. Meanwhile, Príncipe, São Tomé's jewel sister island, is now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and offers watersports opportunities such as stand up paddle and surfing lessons. Bradt's São Tomé & Príncipe is the perfect companion for independent travellers, wildlife enthusiasts, trekkers, foodies and anyone interested in colonial history and African developments. This indispensable guide to one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots offers sections on background and practical information, followed by four easy-to-follow chapters on São Tomé and a dedicated chapter on Príncipe. It shows the way to plantations lost in time and an organic cocoa cooperative, and also includes local expressions, advice on cultural and medical issues as well as on how to get by on a budget in a destination without backpacker infrastructure. All budgets are catered for, from luxurious chic boutique resorts to city apartments and budget guesthouses.
