Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Transport Policy
Book SynopsisTransport is a fundamental component of all modern economies. Transport Policy presents a wide ranging collection of previously published articles which aim to provide the reader with an understanding of the main elements of transport policy.Topics covered include: the objectives of transport policy, policy options, policy analysis and, through a series of case studies, policy implementation. This volume will be of particular interest to those academics and policymakers seeking an overview of the most important issues in the modern transport policy arena.Trade Review'The original pagination is kept on top of the present volume for ease of reference, which is most useful . . . The contents are well-chosen, international and covers most pertinent areas of transport economics and policy. It is particularly interesting to read articles from the pre-Thatcher era, saying things ignored at the time . . . This book would be a valuable addition to any reference collection with an interest in transport policy per se, particularly those which do not hold collections of the academic transport journals.' -- Place

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Analytical Transport Economics: An International
Book SynopsisAnalytical Transport Economics opens with a critical examination and overview of the scope of transport economics. Next, the production of transport, travel demand, transport externalities and transport markets are thoroughly analysed. The distinguished group of contributors then examine transport policy, both regarding infrastructure and transport markets. Specific attention is paid to the role of government after deregulation and to the transport policy of the European Union. Transport infrastructure is also analysed in view of its effects on the wider economy. Finally, the role of transport in a number of more specific situations is considered, that is in an urban environment, in transitional economies and in developing economies. This book is a considerably revised version of the well-received European Transport Economics (1993), described as 'A book every transport scientist should have in his possession' - Professor Eddy Van de Voorde, University of Antwerp, Belgium. There are a number of new chapters, a few that had lost their usefulness over time have been omitted, and others have been thoroughly revised and updated. With its strong international focus, academics and advanced students of economics, transport economics and public policy as well as policymakers within government and private enterprise will find this book essential reading.Trade Review'The book is a coherent and well-structured sequence of expositions. It is comprehensive in its coverage of analytical approaches and issues . . . The contributions have been carefully edited and cross-referenced, and should be accessible to a wide audience. The key analytical, empirical and policy research issues currently facing the discipline are flagged throughout. The result is an impressive volume that contributes much to the academic and policy-oriented literature in transport.' -- Aisling Reynolds-Feighan, Papers in Regional Science'. . . the book will be found to be most useful to advanced students.' -- International Journal of Transport EconomicsTable of ContentsContents: Preface Part I: Introduction 1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Flying into the Future: Air Transport Policy in
Book SynopsisFlying into the Future explores the organization of air transport in the European Union. It analyses the nature of the industries supplying air transport services, the institutional structure of air transport services, and impediments to increased efficiency in the provision of air transport. The reduction in institutional barriers and regulations has led to a more efficient provision of air transport services in the EU. This book assesses the improvements in the efficiency of air transport services, and highlights institutional and physical problems impeding further efficiency gains. The authors examine airline operations, and the ability of two or more transport systems to operate effectively in tandem. They also consider how to make the boundaries between different transport networks invisible, as well as discussing issues of national organization and the juridical structures which impede operations. The analysis examines both the internal European Union market for air transport services and the links between it and the rest of the world. Other key issues discussed include: EU air transport developments in the context of global markets comparisons of recent developments in aviation policy between the EU and the United States the problems of congestion in the air transport industry in Europe the growth and significance of airline alliances. The authors not only consider the economics of European air transport but also legal, political, technical and geographical issues. They explore the problems of providing air transport in the context of inadequate information, institutional constraints, inherent market imperfections and imprecise objectives.Flying into the Future will be essential reading for industrialists, policymakers and academics interested in transport economics and transport policy.Trade Review'Overall, the book provides an excellent review of the many complex and often conflicting issues facing EU policymakers in devising appropriate regulatory measures to deal with a rapidly evolving air transport sector and one in which even defining a market is fraught with difficulties. . . . I would have no hesitation in recommending the book to those wishing to gain a detailed understanding of the economic regulation of air transport in Europe.' -- George Williams, Journal of Air Transport Management'Generally, this is a very useful and welcome text, that should be appreciated by both policymakers and the academic community. Balancing theory and empirical detail, it provides a valuable grounding on key aspects of air transport economics, organization and regulation with particular reference to the still-evolving European context.' -- Clive Charlton, Journal of Transport Geography'This interesting book addresses a number of highly topical issues in the airline industry. . . . the book is a timely contribution to the debate on air transport policy, a debate that is taking place the world over. . . . The book makes very interesting reading, especially the chapters on infrastructure and airline alliances.' -- Pat Hanlon, The Economic JournalTable of ContentsContents: 1. Introduction 2. Business Expert Press The New Age Urban Transportation Systems, Volume II: Cases from Asian Economies
Book SynopsisUrbanization is a global phenomenon that hugely constrains existing transportation infrastructure in cities. Urban transportation (UT) challenges are more significant in developing countries with rapid development as the land occupation is dense.Limited urban space and infrastructure fail to meet the increasing traffic demands and to provide reasonable service quality. Therefore betterment of UT systems is more required than ever.Infrastructural development and transportation operations are mainly directed at citizen welfare and it requires huge capital investments. States initiate urban development by inviting private participation so that operational and commercial risks are minimized and quality of execution is better. Several aspects in planning and management of global UT projects are common. But the approach and solutions are typically developed for a local context and relevance. Specific UT challenges are land use planning, socioeconomic distribution, project designing, implementation, financial analysis and governmental policies.A comprehensive background of UT systems, challenges involved and various approaches adopted by different countries are presented along with five real-life Asian cases. The book is aimed as a one-point reference on modern day developments on urban transportation for a readership of consultants, practitioners, developers, policy makers, and academicians

Rutgers University Press Port Newark and the Origins of Container Shipping
Book SynopsisContainer shipping is a vital part of the global economy. Goods from all around the world, from vegetables to automobiles, are placed in large metal containers which are transported across the ocean in ships, then loaded onto tractor-trailers and railroad flatbeds. But when and where did this world-changing invention get started? This fascinating study traces the birth of containerization to Port Newark, New Jersey, in 1956 when trucker Malcom McLean thought of a brilliant new way to transport cargo. It tells the story of how Port Newark grew rapidly as McLean’s idea was backed by both New York banks and the US military, who used containerization to ship supplies to troops in Vietnam. Angus Gillespie takes us behind the scenes of today’s active container shipping operations in Port Newark, talking to the pilots who guide the ships into port, the Coast Guard personnel who help manage the massive shipping traffic, the crews who unload the containers, and even the chaplains who counsel and support the mariners. Port Newark shines a spotlight on the unsung men and women who help this complex global shipping operation run smoothly. Since McLean's innovation, Port Newark has expanded with the addition of the nearby Elizabeth Marine Terminal. This New Jersey complex now makes up the busiest seaport on the East Coast of the United States. Some have even called it “America’s Front Door.” The book tells the story of the rapid growth of worldwide containerization, and how Port Newark has adapted to bigger ships with deeper channels and a raised bridge. In the end, there is speculation of the future of this port with ever-increasing automation, artificial intelligence, and automation.Trade Review"A must-read if one is to understand the shipping world of today." — Power Ships Magazine " Angus Gillespie has done it again: written a book that is as informative as it is exciting." — Michael A. Rockland, Professor Emeritus of American Studies, Rutgers University "Port Newark takes a fresh look at the often-overlooked history of containerization, beginning with its inception in 1956. Gillespie’s writing is free of academic jargon, richly illustrated, and readable. Port Newark is essential reading for all maritime aficionados."— Daniel A. Dermer, Central Jersey Council, Navy League of the United States "Angus Gillespie tells a riveting story that includes political intrigue, labor conflict, crime, racial strife, charity work, and the impacts of globalization. The narrative of Port Newark, one of the busiest ports on earth, is about a small point on the map. Yet its story is the story of the consumer world we live in."— Simon J. Springer International Publishing AG Post Pandemic Facilitation of Air Transport:
Book SynopsisFrom early 2020 for a period of two years at the end of which this book was written, air transport suffered unprecedented setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic may eventually fizzle out into another flu like occurrence, the restraint with which air transport services were offered would remain with us for a while with some practices being sustained, particularly those pertaining to public health. One of the main areas of air transport that was and will be affected significantly by the changed circumstances - is facilitation – a subject that is regulated by the Chicago Convention of 1944 and its Annex 9. This book looks in depth at the Annex as it will be applied in a post pandemic world, against its legal, socio-political, and economic impacts, addressing the Standards of the Annex on clearance of aircraft; entry and departure of passengers; and the carriage of cargo. It also discusses some critical aviation events in 2020 and 2021 that occurred as they relate to facilitation of air transport. Some of the key areas discussed are the role of ICAO; issues of public health as they relate to air transport; security of travel documents; smuggling of persons; digital technology and rights of the passenger; unruly passengers; carriage of disabled passengers; relief flights and repatriation flights; and facilities at airports.Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1. IAEA Format and Content of the Package Design Safety
Book SynopsisRequirements for the safe transport of radioactive material are established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2018 Edition. Packages intended for the transport of radioactive material have to be designed to meet applicable national and international regulations. For package designs that require approval by a competent authority, the documentary evidence of compliance with the applicable regulations is commonly known as package design safety report (PDSR). For package designs that do not require competent authority approval, a PDSR would also be an appropriate form of documentary evidence of compliance with the Transport Regulations. This Safety Guide provides recommendations on the preparation of a PDSR to demonstrate compliance of a package design for the transport of radioactive material with the Transport Regulations. This Safety Guide is intended for use by applicants for approval of package designs (when package designs are subject to competent authority approval) as well as by package designers and/or consignors (when package designs do not require competent authority approval). Regulators will benefit from the common structure for the competent authority assessment process, and designers and consignors will find a consistent approach to justify the compliance of a package design with the regulatory requirements.

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies A Time Bomb for Global Trade: Maritime-related
Book SynopsisWhat is being done to counter threats of maritime terrorism and how effective are the safeguards? The author presents evidence that Al-Qaeda aims to disrupt the seaborne trading system, the backbone of the modern global economy, and would use a crude nuclear explosive device or a radiological bomb to do so if it could get its hands on either, and position it to go off in a key port-city, shipping strait, or waterway. Improving maritime security is especially important for the United States, Canada, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, and for China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and other economies in East Asia that have extensive seaborne trade. It is doubly vital for the world's largest container transshipment hubs cum seaports like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Rotterdam. This book discusses the major threats to seaborne trade and its land links in the global supply chain, their potential impact, the new security measures in place or pending for ships, ports and cargo containers, and recommendations for preventing or handling a catastrophic terrorist attack designed to disrupt world trade.
