IAEA Format and Content of the Package Design Safety
Book SynopsisRequirements for the safe transport of radioactive material are established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2018 Edition. Packages intended for the transport of radioactive material have to be designed to meet applicable national and international regulations. For package designs that require approval by a competent authority, the documentary evidence of compliance with the applicable regulations is commonly known as package design safety report (PDSR). For package designs that do not require competent authority approval, a PDSR would also be an appropriate form of documentary evidence of compliance with the Transport Regulations. This Safety Guide provides recommendations on the preparation of a PDSR to demonstrate compliance of a package design for the transport of radioactive material with the Transport Regulations. This Safety Guide is intended for use by applicants for approval of package designs (when package designs are subject to competent authority approval) as well as by package designers and/or consignors (when package designs do not require competent authority approval). Regulators will benefit from the common structure for the competent authority assessment process, and designers and consignors will find a consistent approach to justify the compliance of a package design with the regulatory requirements.

United Nations Climate change impacts and adaptation for coastal
Book SynopsisGiven the strategic role of seaports and of other coastal transport infrastructure as part of the global trading system and the potential for climate-related delays and disruptions across global supply chains, enhancing the climate resilience of key transport infrastructure is a matter of strategic economic importance. Legal and regulatory approaches, as well as policies and plans are going to be key to efforts at facilitating effective risk and vulnerability assessments and providing a supportive framework for adaptation action at all levels. Guidance, standards, best practices, methodologies and other tools in support of adaptation are urgently required, and targeted capacity building is going to be critical, especially for the most vulnerable countries. This includes SIDS, which depend on their ports and coastal airports for food and energy needs, external trade and - crucially - tourism, which typically accounts for a major share of GDP. Against this background and drawing on UNCTAD's related work, since 2008, this compilation of policies and practices has been prepared to contribute to bridging a knowledge gap with regards to climate change impacts and adaptation for coastal transport infrastructure. The compilation presents examples of legal and policy approaches, as well as of reports, studies and guidance to support climate risk, vulnerability and impact assessment, and the development of effective adaptation response measures for coastal transport infrastructure, with a view to informing and inspiring policy makers, national authorities, transport managers, infrastructure owners, and other interested stakeholders in their efforts..

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies A Time Bomb for Global Trade: Maritime-related
Book SynopsisWhat is being done to counter threats of maritime terrorism and how effective are the safeguards? The author presents evidence that Al-Qaeda aims to disrupt the seaborne trading system, the backbone of the modern global economy, and would use a crude nuclear explosive device or a radiological bomb to do so if it could get its hands on either, and position it to go off in a key port-city, shipping strait, or waterway. Improving maritime security is especially important for the United States, Canada, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, and for China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and other economies in East Asia that have extensive seaborne trade. It is doubly vital for the world's largest container transshipment hubs cum seaports like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Rotterdam. This book discusses the major threats to seaborne trade and its land links in the global supply chain, their potential impact, the new security measures in place or pending for ships, ports and cargo containers, and recommendations for preventing or handling a catastrophic terrorist attack designed to disrupt world trade.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Bioevaluation Of World Transport Networks
Book SynopsisSlime mould Physarum polycephalum is a monstrous single cell well known for its task-solving abilities — solves computational geometry and logical problems, navigates robots and generates music.The slime mould could also build motorways, highways and expressways. It is used to analyse transport networks of Africa, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Iberia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, UK and USA. The largest cities are represented by oat flakes and the slime mould is inoculated in a capital. When all oat flakes are covered by the slime mould, the structure of the protoplasmic networks formed are analyzed. In the laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses, intriguing country-specific properties of the motorway networks are uncovered and compared with the man-made and slime mould networks. They are studied as proximity graphs, leading to hierarchies of complexity and bio-rationality of the motorways.The book will inspire novel and original thoughts, paradigms and approaches for re-evaluation of historical findings on the emergence of ancient roads and will help to design future transcontinental pathways. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Concepts Of Transportation Economics
Book SynopsisTransportation is the world's largest invisible industry. Modern society is completely dependent on transportation to sustain its way of life, and it is all around us constantly. Yet the economics of transportation is a mystery to most people. Why do air fares rise and fall? Why do urban transit systems struggle to survive and require such large public subsidies? Why does freight transport cost more to move in one direction than an equal distance in another? Why is the government so heavily involved in transportation? Concepts of Transportation Economics provides explanations to these queries and many more, as well-renowned experts in the field, Barry E Prentice and Darren Prokop interpret the unique dynamics underlying transportation through the lens of applied economics, and demonstrate that the operations of transportation are completely logical and obvious once the concepts that underlie business decisions and consumer reactions are explained.Table of ContentsCommunications and Technical Change; Logistics and Economics of Technological Change in the Supply Chain; Freight versus Passenger Demand for Transportation; Elasticity of Derived Demand for Transport; Role of Transport in Trade; Laws of Variable Proportions and Scale; Direct Costs and Scale Economies; Cost Economies and Traceability; Cost Relationships: Joint, Common and Constant Costs; Elasticity of Supply; Modal Supply Characteristics; Markets and Competition in Transportation; Externalities, Public Supply and Marginal Cost Pricing; Social Costs and Benefits; Spatial and Temporal Pricing in Transportation; Fronthaul and Backhaul Pricing; Peak Load Pricing; Congestion Cost Pricing; Price Discrimination; Transportation, Investment and Generalized Cost; Cost Benefit Analysis and Investment in Infrastructure; Intermodal Competition; Location and Land Settlement; Site Rents, Industrial Location; Gateways, Hubs and Trade Corridors; Transportation and Government Policy; Regulation and Deregulation; Taxation and Subsidization; Issues of Economic Development; Regulatory Enforcement and Compliance; The Role of Fines; Adverse Selection and Moral Hazard;
