Book SynopsisAt its zenith, there were 21,000 route miles of railway in Britain. Today the country''s railways deliver more passenger miles than they did at their greatest extent despite a drastic reduction in the size of the network. Those cuts were the result of a campaign by a number of individuals who believed, erroneously as the passing of time has shown, that railways were a thing of the past and an impediment to progress. Although the process of railway closures started early, it gained momentum in the 1950s and in the harrowing years following the publication of the Beeching report. However, as the original research by the authors of this book reveals, it could have been much worse and there were plans to reduce the size of the network even more drastically, to the point where only a few lines would have survived. An understanding of what happened in the past is vital to understanding how today''s railways struggle to meet the demands imposed on them. Trimming at the margins remains an att

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Female Railway Workers in World War II
Book SynopsisDuring World War II women took on railway roles which were completely new to females. They worked as porters and guards, on the permanent way, and in maintenance and workshop operations. In this book Susan Major features the voices of women talking about their wartime railway experiences, using interviews by the Friends of the National Railway Museum. Many were working in 'men's jobs', or working with men for the first time, and these interviews offer tantalising glimpses of conditions, sometimes under great danger. What was it about railway work that attracted them? It's fascinating to contrast their voices with the way they were portrayed in official publicity campaigns and in the light of attitudes to women working in the 1940s. These women talk about their difficulties in a workplace not designed for women-no toilets for example, the attitudes of their families, what they thought about American GIs and Italian POWs, how they coped with swearing and troublesome colleagues, rules about stockings. They describe devastating air raids and being thrust into tough responsibilities for the first time. This book fills a gap, as most books on women's wartime roles focus on the military services or industrial work. It offers valuable insights into the perceptions and concerns of these young women. As generations die out and families lose a direct connection, it becomes more important to be able to share their voices with a wider audience.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Colours in the Sky: The History of Autair and
Book SynopsisIt's impossible to tell the story of Court Line without telling that of Autair, founded by helicopter pioneer William 'Bill' Armstrong. Autair itself was an offshoot of his global helicopter operation, but Bill also had his finger in many aviation 'pies' including a multitude of operations in Africa, where so many aircraft and airlines were created, bought and sold with such prolificacy that even he could not remember the names and how many there were! There is also the background to Court Line's shipping concerns and the Caribbean operations of the hotel chains and regional airline Leeward Islands Air Transport which Court owned for a while. Covered in detail is the introduction, demonstration and use of the Lockheed TriStar wide-bodied airliner, the first of the type used in the Inclusive Tour business. Court Line Aviation and Tom Gullick's Clarksons Holidays brought to the forefront the concept of value-for-money Inclusive Tour holidays following the 'vertical integration' business model whereby owning and controlling each step of the holiday allowed the company to make a small profit at every stage. The orange, pink, turquoise and yellow jets brought flashes of colour to dreary British airports, and quickly streamed a multi-coloured rainbow across European skies to Mediterranean destinations and even further afield. Truly they did indeed put Colours in the Sky!

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Britain's Glorious Aircraft Industry: 100 Years
Book SynopsisGreat Britain's aircraft industry started in 1908, with the first formally registered organisation in the world to offer to design and build an aeroplane for commercial gain'. This was when the Short brothers, Oswald, Eustace and Horace, decided that aeroplanes would overtake balloons as a business opportunity in the aeronautical world and formed the partnership Short Brothers'. From this start, the UK aircraft industry expanded and grew rapidly, going on throughout the rest of the twentieth century to achieve many firsts' in the aeronautical world, with some remarkable technical successes and gaining a reputation to match. There were also setbacks along the way. This book tells the complete story of the 110 years since the start, all the companies formed and the aircraft they produced, highlighting the advances in aeronautical ambition and technology. It is the story of the creation, survival and decline of all one hundred and twenty-three of the aircraft design and construction companies formed between 1908 and 2018. The exhilaration of success and the magic of aviation technology are vividly illustrated by the technical and political birth stories of iconic projects, such as the Cirrus/Gypsy Moths, the Tiger Moth, the flying boats of Imperial Airways, Spitfire, Lancaster, Viscount, Vulcan, Harrier, Buccaneer and many more. The rotary wing industry is not forgotten. The birth of the jet turbine engine and the quest for supersonic speed is included. The stories of the disappointments of failure and disaster, such as the Brabazon, Comet, Princess, Rotodyne and TSR-2, and the growth of international collaboration in Concorde, Tornado, Airbus, Eurofighter Typhoon and other projects are included, in the context of the international scene and domestic politics. The conclusion highlights the prominent reminiscences and speculates on the future of the aircraft industry in Britain.

The Crowood Press Ltd Railways of Ayrshire
Book SynopsisIn the early 1800s, Ayrshire was already established as a prosperous, mainly rural agricultural county. The realization that there was abundant coal and (to a lesser extent) iron ore deposits to be exploited, together with the coming of the Industrial Revolution, rendered the area wide open to the 'railway mania' that swept Britain in the mid to late 1800s. The proximity of the county north to Glasgow and south to Carlisle (and thence south) made it an attractive proposition for early railway developers. Gordon Thomson explores the history and development of the railway routes in Ayrshire; how the coming of the railways changed the face of the area and supported the growth of industry. It looks at how services evolved through the eras of LMS, nationalization and privatization, and the preservation and heritage scene in Ayrshire.

Key Publishing Ltd Monarch Airlines
Book SynopsisMonarch Airlines was founded in June 1967 and began operations from Luton Airport in April 1968, using two Bristol Britannias to fly charter flights for package holidays. Supported by Cosmos Tours, Monarch expanded during the 1970s to become one of the UK's largest charter airlines in the 1980s, supporting the growing inclusive tour business. In 1986, Monarch began to operate scheduled flights, marking its gradual transition from primarily a charter airline to a predominantly scheduled operator as customers started to organise their own travel arrangements. A modified low-cost approach was adopted in 2004, and, by 2008, Monarch firmly promoted itself as a low-cost airline. However, significant financial losses were encountered in 2009 and 2011 and, despite several finance rescue packages from the owners, the Monarch Group was sold to private investment company Greybull Capital in 2014. This resulted in a significant downsizing of operations, combining a reduction in fleet size with a shift to Monarch becoming an entirely scheduled low-cost carrier flying only short-haul leisure routes. Although bankruptcy was avoided in September 2016 through major investment in the company, financial problems resurfaced a year later and Monarch Airlines went into administration at the beginning of October 2017. With over 130 images, this book describes the history of Monarch Airlines from its inception in 1967 to its eventual demise 50 years later in 2017.

A must-read and must-have reference for any practising logistics and supply chain professional." * Raghu Ramachandran, Founder, 13 Colony Global and former Director of the Strategic Enterprise Fund, UPS *"Given the rapid rate at which logistics systems and supply chains are evolving both technologically and managerially, the new edition of this excellent review of innovation in the field is particularly welcome. To my knowledge, no other book is so comprehensive, up-to-date and insightful in its assessment of the major developments currently reshaping the way in which goods are distributed." * Professor Alan McKinnon, Professor of Logistics at Kuehne Logistics University and Emeritus Professor of Logistics at Heriot Watt University *"This latest edition is a very valuable read for anyone working in the supply chain. Appreciating and adopting innovation is key to business performance, and to saving our planet." * Nick Wildgoose, CEO, Supplien Consulting and former Global Supply Chain Product Leader, Zurich Insurance *"This latest edition demonstrates how innovation can contribute in a positive way to address disruption throughout global supply chains. It is important that the digital journey continues to develop and I warmly recommend this book to any reader that might be interested in innovations within global supply chains." * Cecilia Strokirk, Project Manager Seamless Transports & Logistics, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden *"This second edition of Logistics and Supply Chain Innovation provides the most up-to-date, essential and comprehensive 'What You Need to Know' about future directions for Logistics and Supply Chain, including practical insights on how to deal with the strategic supply chain priorities for the post-pandemic world - namely, Resilience, Sustainability and Digitalization." * Mark Millar, Supply Chain Thought Leader and Author, 'Global Supply Chain Ecosystems' *"With the ongoing supply chain crisis resulting from COVID-19, one might have thought that John Manners-Bell and Ken Lyon would have to rewrite their 2018 first edition of Logistics and Supply Chain Innovation. In reality, events have confirmed the importance of the key issues already covered in their 2018 edition. Without the technological and organizational advances we have seen in logistics over the last decade and analyzed in the book, COVID-19 would have had a far worse negative impact on global trade and supply chains. In their second edition, the authors eloquently update the reader on key developments in supply chain models, technologies, digitalization, sustainability imperatives, and markets. The reader is guided through the recent past towards an outlook and future directions. A timely book, which will be important for policy makers and practitioners who have become ever more aware of the crucial importance of supply chains for today's trade and development." * Jan Hoffmann, Head, Trade Logistics Branch, Division on Technology and Logistics, UNCTAD *"There is never a dull moment in the planning and moving of material and the authors prove just that. Disruptive innovation is a story without an ending and this presentation of the broad subject matter entices readers to continue to breakout, influence, and build something new." * Dr Don Clark, Principal, DC Maritime Systems *"Digging from the extensive knowledge and hands-on experience of its authors, this book provides a thorough analysis of technological and business model innovations in supply chains and logistics. Providing an overview of major trends, from containerization a few decades ago to more recent developments in, for instance, IOT, big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain and autonomous vehicles. It helps the reader understand the profound transformations that are affecting the supply chains and logistics industry, and what this could mean for the future. An excellent publication, and a lively reading thanks to a wide variety of examples and case studies." * Anne Miroux, Faculty Fellow, Emerging Markets Institute, Cornell University and former Director of the Division on Technology and Logistics, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development *Table of Contents Chapter - 00: Introduction; Section - ONE: The impact of innovation and disruption on the supply chain; Chapter - 01: The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the anatomy of innovation; Chapter - 02: Breaking the paradigm; Chapter - 03: Lessons from the past; Chapter - 04: Disruption to the post-Covid-19 supply chain and logistics industry; Section - TWO: Transforming supply chain models; Chapter - 05: The direct-to-consumer model and its implications for logistics; Chapter - 06: Alternative downstream retail distribution models; Chapter - 07: On-demand delivery and crowd-shipping; Chapter - 08: Innovating to meet the challenge of urban distribution; Chapter - 09: The disruptive power of e-retailing; Chapter - 10: Amazon – The ultimate disruptor; Chapter - 11: 3D printing and the transformation of upstream supply chains; Section - THREE: New technology development and adoption; Chapter - 12: The Internet of Things, Big Data and artificial intelligence; Chapter - 13: Control towers and supply chain visibility; Chapter - 14: Blockchain in supply chains; Chapter - 15: The disruptive potential of robots and automation in the warehouse; Chapter - 16: Autonomous vehicles and delivery robots; Section - FOUR: Digitalization of logistics markets; Chapter - 17: Digital road freight and warehousing platforms; Chapter - 18: The digitalization of international freight forwarding; Chapter - 19: Disrupting trade finance; Section - FIVE: Innovating for sustainability; Chapter - 20: The role of new technologies in mitigating climate change; Chapter - 21: A guide to alternative propulsion systems; Chapter - 22: Designing smart and circular supply chains; Chapter - 23: ‘Shifting to Green’ survey; Section - SIX: Future directions for global supply chains; Chapter - 24: The ‘Great Reset’; Chapter - 25: Conclusion

Elsevier Science General Aviation Aircraft Design
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Gudmundsson has set a benchmark for textbooks on aircraft design. Within its declared bounds this book is remarkably comprehensive, with introductory material, clearly presented mathematical tools with assumptions and derivations, notes on when and where to apply them and numerous real-world examples. Gudmundsson truly has a feel for design, something he tries to convey throughout, describing each task, the nature of the designer’s approach and the wide-ranging set of constraints to be addressed. As well as all the analytical work described above, aircraft design requires graphic skills. A real pleasure in this book is the high quality of the illustrations; Gudmundsson is right to be proud of them. Of the many textbooks on aircraft design this is my favourite. The author’s declared aim remained, as with the first edition, to gather information and procedures helpful to the designer. He has achieved this to a very impressive standard. By including all aspects, even organisation and management of the process, he has made this a valuable and comprehensive ‘go-to’ reference source." --John M Robertson, CEng MIMechE MRAeS, RAeS General Aviation GroupTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisWithin the developed world, airlines have responded to the advice of advocates for corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER) to use the intertwined dimensions of economics, society and environment to guide their business activities. However, disingenuously, the advocates and regulators frequently pay insufficient attention to the economics which are critical to airlinesâ sustainability and profits. This omission pushes airlines into the unprofitable domain of CSERplus. The author identifies alleged market inefficiencies and failures, examines CSERplus impacts on international competition and assesses the unintended consequences of the regulations. Taylor & Francis Will Sustainability Fly
Book SynopsisWhile international negotiations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been less than satisfactory, there is a presumption that a significant level of multi-lateral commitment will be realized at some point. International air and marine travel have been left to one side in past talks because the pursuit of agreement proceeds on the basis of commitment by sovereign nations and the effects of these specific commercial activities are, by their nature, difficult to corral and assign to specific national jurisdictions. However, air travel is increasing and, unless something is done, emissions from this segment of our world economy will form a progressively larger percentage of the total, especially as emissions fall in other activities. This book focuses on fuel. The aim is to provide background in technical and policy terms, from the broadest reliable sources of information available, for the necessary discourse on society's reaction to the evolving aviation emissions profile. It cTrade Review'While dealing professionally with the current technologies for generating biofuel, the book also points towards broader, philosophical questions about ecological justice and what we might owe to the future. It is a well-researched and well-written book and it contributes to the important dialogue about how we can fly without changing our planet irrevocably.'Dr Ben Daley, Policy School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Aerospace Table of ContentsWill Sustainability Fly?

Gill Tony Ryan Irelands Aviator
Book SynopsisTony Ryan was one of the greatest Irishmen of the twentieth century.Ingenious, driven and sometimes reckless, his sheer spirit and adventurousness made him Ireland's Aviator. Born in a railwayman's cottage in County Tipperary he rose to enormous success. Ryan set up the airline leasing company, Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA), which quickly became the largest such enterprise in the world. But it famously crashed and burned and Ryan lost almost everything. What remained was a little airline called Ryanair which was chronically loss making. Ryan set about turning Ryanair around, putting in one of his assistants, Michael O'Leary, to help knock it into shape. The rest is history.Richard Aldous gives an irresistible insight into the machinations of the man who epitomised what it means to be an entrepreneur.Fascinating'The Sunday TimesMasterful'The Sunday IndependentReveals the warts as well as the successes of the Tipperary native' Trade Review"A former head of Aer Lingus, Michael Dargan has observed: 'The magnitude of Tony Ryan's success is baffling. The historian may record it, but he can hardly explain it.' Richard Aldous makes a good stab at it." -- Joe Carroll * The Irish Catholic *"Failure and redemption are themes peppered throughout this book as Mr Ryan's ambition, hard work, luck and stubbornness led him to grow a global aircraft owning and leasing entity followed by the world's most profitable low cost carrier." -- Joe Gill, Director of Corporate Broking at Goodbody, Finance Dublin‘Tony Ryan biographer Richard Aldous weaves a tapestry of tales about Ryanair's (and the entrepreneur's) fortunes (…). With Aldous having explored the late Tony Ryan's life in the capacity of an official biographer, it's fair to say that one approaches a work such as this with a strong degree of trepidation. Forebodings of a fawning eulogy abounded. But it does reveal the warts as well as the successes of the Tipperary native. -- John Mullingan * Irish Independent *Somehow he managed to leave them still loving him anyway. -- Patricia O’Neill * Irish Independent *It gives an irresistible insight into the machinations of the man who helped to create what is now Ireland's second biggest company - Ryanair. -- John Mulligan * Sunday Independent Review *Tony lived lavishly and elegantly and was a larger than life character who only knew how to play high risk. This often had disastrous consequences, but his tenacity and determination to succeed are the real lessons of this book and as the nation strives for recovery Tony Ryan’s story is an inspirational one. * The Nationalist *

The History Press Ltd Liverpools Last Ocean Liners
Book SynopsisAt one time, Liverpool''s landing stage was so busy that ships would be literally queuing in the Mersey to discharge and embark passengers. However, the period from the late 1940s saw both the golden age of Liverpool shipping as well as the decline of its passenger trade. From the early 1960s, though, Liverpool''s passenger trade entered a decline that was unstoppable. The Jet Age had seen the loss of much of its trade and shipping line after shipping line moved away from the port or stopped its ships sailing and sold them for scrap or service with foreign lines. John Shepherd tells the story, using the memories of those who sailed in them, of the last liners to use Liverpool.
