Book SynopsisOrgan transplantation has revolutionized the treatment for end-stage organ failure. Immunosuppression is still a major approach currently used in the prevention and treatment of allograft rejection. Both editors Dr. Chen and Dr. Qian have been contributing to preclinical evaluation of immunosuppressants for more than 25 years in North America. Experts from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and Brazil contributed 23 chapters to this book, providing details of immunological basis in transplantation. They also describe six classes of immunosuppressive agents (calcineurin inhibitors, mTOR inhibitors, JAK-STAT inhibitors, antiproliferative agents, costimulation blockers and corticosteroids), as well as ischemia/reperfusion injury treated agents. Additionally, the new development of cell therapy in the induction of transplant tolerance is introduced. This book provides many important references for the research direction of novel immunosuppressants. Readers that will find this book useful include transplant physicians, surgeons, nurses, immunologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, medical students, residents and trainees in transplantation.

Book Synopsis“[A] remarkable journey.” —The TelegraphThe incredible life story of legendary cardiac surgeon and scientist Magdi Yacoub, an outsider who succeeded against the odds Veteran journalists Simon Pearson and Fiona Gorman follow the remarkable life of heart surgeon Magdi Yacoub from his formative years in Egypt, through spectacular success at Cairo University, to his long and distinguished career in Britain. Although at times he clashed with the medical establishment in London, Yacoub pioneered great advances in heart surgery. He was knighted in 1992, and in 2014, he was awarded the highest honor in the gift of the Queen, the Order of Merit.Written with unprecedented access and drawing on extensive interviews and research, the biography recounts how Yacoub transformed the treatment of children with congenital heart disease. He performed some of the first heart transplants in Britain and the first heart-lung transplants in Europe. At London’s Harefield Hospital, he created the greatest heart transplant center in the world. Among his patients are men and women who are still thriving more than thirty-five years after he gave them new hope. This story is also about science, the development of new medical techniques, and a deeper understanding of how the human body works. Today, at an age when most people have long since retired, Yacoub is still pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding and surgical know-how. He is also taking heart surgery to places that until now have had little access to cardiac treatment, developing centers of excellence across Africa, including in Egypt, where his hospital in Aswan has an international reputation, and a new center is rising in Cairo.Yacoub’s life is one of triumph and tragedy, success and failure, fierce criticism and high praise—it is also an enthralling journey through the worlds of scientific research and medical politics and ethics at the highest levels.Trade Review“Chronicling his remarkable journey from Belbeis, an ancient fortress city on the Nile delta, to becoming one of the world’s most famous Egyptians . . . the book not only lays bare his surgical successes but also the challenges he faced along the way.”—The Telegraph"The reason that he has finally consented to an authorised biography now after all these years is not, he stresses, out of self-aggrandisement, but in the hope that it will inspire others to follow in his footsteps."—The National"His legacy is one of innovation and saved lives. . . . an outsider who went on to have a career of firsts."—Channel 4 News"Whether or not you are interested in the medical field, Yacoub’s tale will impassion anyone striving to create a more just and honourable society."—The New Arab"This is a story of a life well lived. Sir Magdi Yacoub has transformed medical practice and improved the lives of millions of people. He did this with intellectual creativity, determination, and a deep commitment to serving humanity."—Minouche Shafik, President, Columbia University“From humble beginnings as he followed his surgeon father across Egypt, to achieving the highest honors in the UK, Magdi Yacoub’s story exemplifies the values of hard work, innovation, and humanity. His passion for science and his unrivaled surgical wizardry are only surpassed by his core belief that every human life holds equal value. This book will undoubtedly inspire generations of young people all around the world to fulfill their most ambitious dreams.”—Valentin Fuster, Physician in Chief, Mount Sinai Hospital"This book recounts how a brilliant and determined young Egyptian became a great pioneer and global champion of cardiac surgery. Through his skills in the operating theater and his indefatigable energy he’s directly saved thousands of lives. And through his intensive commitment and compelling advocacy of hospitals and research his Chain of Hope charity has saved many more—especially in Africa. Magdi Yacoub’s immense achievements richly deserve honor and celebration, and this fine book tells us all why."—Martin Rees, author of If Science is to Save Us"Amazing stories"—Alhurra"An unconventional biography"—Groks Science ShowPRAISE FOR MAGDI YACOUB:"Magdi has changed our definition of what is possible."—Gordon Brown, former UK Prime Minister"The world’s leading cardiac surgeon"—The Sunday Times"Renowned heart specialist Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub"—The Guardian “Recognized as one of the great pioneers of heart transplant surgery”—BBC Radio"The Leonardo da Vinci of cardiac surgery"—Peter Alivizatos, MDTable of ContentsForeword Dame Mary ArcherAcknowledgments Introduction1. Book SynopsisThe first human organ transplant in 1950 at a suburban hospital is the focus of The Graft: How a Pioneering Operation Sparked the Modern Age of Organ Transplants. The book examines the controversies the operation generated and the progress medicine has made in organ transplantation.Trade Review"The Graft is a warmly written account of the kidney transplant performed in 1950 at a small Catholic hospital (Little Company of Mary) in Chicago by a team of skilled doctors. The case, subsequently reported in JAMA, involved a patient with polycystic kidney disease who experienced early graft function followed by rejection within months but maintained adequate native renal function to live another five years. The lead surgeon, Richard Lawler, did not perform additional transplants, but this index case prompted both support and criticism from the medical and ethical communities, perhaps spurring academic medical centers to develop an immunological basis for transplantation. The history of this case is explained in medical laymen's language and provides more thorough documentation of the details than previously published. The story of that particular transplant and the people and institution involved is followed by discussion of the medical and ethical considerations of transplantation, and a sample of transplant surgeon stories, and a summary of some of the historical policy developments in transplantation that followed. It is of particular interest that a Catholic hospital in Chicago in 1950, run by nuns, provided the institutional support for a highly innovative surgical procedure for the time. The narrative is engaging and personal, written by a relative of the surgeon Lawler." - Stuart J. Knechtle, M.D., William R. • Voices of Teenage Transplant Survivors:

Emerald Publishing Limited Voices of Teenage Transplant Survivors:

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile the physical and emotional trials of waiting on transplant lists are featured in popular media, the struggles recipients face years after surgery are not. Voices of Teenage Transplant Survivors introduces illness narratives from an unrecognized patient population: recipients of heart, liver, and kidney transplants. Offering unique narratives by adolescents who use poetry to explore issues surrounding the changing body, independence, identity, and mortality, the book showcases a message of healing and voices of hope amid uncertainty. Illuminating the physical, psychological, and existential challenges confronted by adolescents for which organ rejection and side effects loom in their future, Sample details the poetry workshops where these adolescents articulated experiences silenced by family, friends, and the culture of medicine. She includes close readings and analyses of their writings, along with writing prompts and references to narrative medicine theory. This powerful book offers something new for medical and health professionals, medical humanities researchers, students, and the public.Trade Review‘Through her stories of remarkable young transplant survivors, Susan Sample weaves a tapestry that illuminates distinctive, intimate concerns about identity, body image, belonging, hope, survival and mortality. This book is essential reading for adolescents and young adults with chronic or terminal illness—and for their parents and health-care professionals.' -- -Kimberly R. Myers, MA, PhD, Professor of Humanities and Medicine, Penn State College of Medicine, USAIt is increasingly recognized internationally that poetry can play a major supportive role both for patients of all ages as well as for their responsible health professionals. This inspirational book curated by Professor Susan Sample adds to this important message, with its insights through poetry by teenagers into their lives before and after heart, kidney, and liver transplants. This book should interest communities around the world concerned with organ replacement, whether young or older patients or their families, or responsible health professional staff and students. -- Donald RJ Singer MD, FRCPThe subtitle, “Miracle-Like,” well captures the spirit and achievement of Susan Sample’s Voices of Teenage Transplant Survivors. Sample presents poems written by adolescents participating in poetry workshops at the summer Youth Transplant Camp program near Salt Lake City. In a series of short chapters, she carries the reader into the workshop process, introducing many of the young poets and placing their work in context. One young man writes of his anger, “It makes me want to hit / something. That’s better / than someone.” A young woman with a liver transplant proudly affirms, “My scar is my scar. / It has personality. / It bubbles and dances when I laugh.” These poems clearly illustrate the power of poetry to heal and the indominable spirit of youth. Poems of insight, honesty, and wit you won’t forget. -- Jack Coulehan M.D., Emeritus Professor of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine, and Senior Fellow of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University, USADr Sample documents her work at a transplant survivors' summer camp, coaxing poetry from teens who don’t read it, but who have plenty to say about their 'miracle-like' experiences post-transplant. She describes brave young people whose aching drive toward supervivere, (above +to live) bursts forth in striking poetic images and metaphors that blend the surreal with the mundane. The chapter 'Our Scars, Our Selves' unpacks an atypical adolescent identity formation in simple terms. JD writes of dying and returning to life three times, concluding that 'My time is now, and I am here.' We can learn much about resilience from these teen-aged poets. -- Johanna Rian, PhD, Program Director, Dolores Jean Lavins Center for Humanities in Medicine, Mayo ClinicTable of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisTransplanting hands -- a model of composite tissue grafting -- began in Lyons in November 1998 with the transplant of one hand and then, in January 2000, of two, both with the support of the Mérieux Foundation. Advances in immunosuppression made possible some unusual transplants of tissue, such as bones, knee-joints, femurs and larynx. From these stemmed the first attempts to transplant hands. This book looks at the long-term results of reattaching hands that have been accidentally amputated. It reviews all the problems -- technical, immunological, nervous, functional and psychological -- that surgeons encountered during and after the transplants. Surgeons, transplant experts, immunologists, dermatologists, psychiatrists, neurophysiologists, physiotherapists and re-education experts will also find here answers to their ethical and legal questions about removing tissue from donors, as well as information about composite tissue grafts in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the past, liver resections and liver transplantations were performed by different surgical teams, with very little interplay between the two. However, the evolution toward more complex operations called for an increasingly intense interaction between these surgical techniques: split liver and living donor liver transplantation have become popular in the transplant community, utilizing the Coinaud segmental anatomy in a very sophisticated way, while portal and arterial resection and reconstruction have become indispensable methods for treating Klatskin tumors infiltrating the hepatic hilum. This book offers a complete overview of the connections between liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. It focuses on ex situ techniques for resection of tumors at the suprahepatic confluence, with or without venous reconstruction, and on total vascular exclusion of the liver with the aid of a venovenous bypass that should be a surgical option for referral centers in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. By taking into consideration the development of minimally invasive liver surgery, it will introduce readers to a variety of new perspectives such as: vascular exclusion techniques with or without extracorporeal circulation, hemodynamic implications and lessons learned from liver transplant surgery, and technical details on pediatric transplantation and its informative role in modern biliary tract surgery. • Patients’ Lived Experiences During the Transplant

Springer International Publishing AG Patients’ Lived Experiences During the Transplant

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book was envisioned by bedside nurses caring for transplant and cellular therapy patients as a way to teach novice nurses and health care colleagues about the care required for this complex patient population. The nurse authors recruited an oncology nurse practitioner, transplant physician, nurse scientist and expert in medical humanities and health studies to join the project team. The dedication of the team and the willingness of the patients to contribute to the project, has led to a unique case study approach focused on the lived experience of patients and care partner(s) during the transplant/cellular therapy journey. The case studies are unique in that they encompass a qualitative narrative developed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and the inclusion of the individual's actual medical and nursing care from their health record. At every step along the trajectory of the illness, the medications and care received are described, interspersed with the voice of the patient and care partner(s) sharing their experiences. The chapters follow the individual patients and their care partner(s) through all phases of their illness. The interviews were conducted, and case studies written by the bedside clinical nurses. Visual art and prose created by patients and care partner(s)s are included in the chapters. The book also includes an introduction written by the nurse authors, a methods chapter on the inclusion of IPA in a case study, and poignant epilogue. The premise of nursing support for survivorship is woven throughout the book, highlighting how giving back aids in recovery identity. This book, full of beautiful artworks and poems, is the work of clinical nurses devoted to improving care for their patients by sharing the patient stories with others. It introduces a unique approach to the case study which could be replicated and applied to any diagnosis.Table of ContentsForeword by Susan K.
