Trains and railways: general interest Books
Mortons Media Group The Stately Trains Collection
Book SynopsisStately Trains' was born out of one man's passion for vintage carriages. Stephen Middleton was brought up in a railway family. His father, grandfather and maternal grandfather all worked forrailway companies from pre-grouping through to the British Railways era after nationalisation. His father had a First Class pass for rail travel, thus it is no surprise that Middleton junior experiencedregular luxury travel on East Coast Pullmans between Yorkshire and London. At the age of fi ve he longed to be a steward working on the Pullman cars. Fate took him in adifferent direction but that yearning did not leave him and in 1992, after seeing an advertisement in Steam Railway magazine, his enthusiasm for railway carriages was rekindled. The advertisementdrew his attention to an unrestored Great Eastern Railway carriage (No.14) that coincidentally had been used as the district engineer's saloon at Ipswich when his father had started work on therailway there. He made a successful bid and embarked on a restoration journey that was to create a collection of historically signifi cant pre-1914 luxury carriages. These further restorations have included a first class saloon built for the Great North of Scotland Railway in 1894 and three directors saloons, one built for the Lancashire & YorkshireRailway in 1906, one for the London & North Western Railway in 1913 and one for the Great Eastern Railway that dates from 1911. In addition to the Great Eastern Railway's coach (No.14) referred to previously, a family saloon built for the GER (1897) and believed to have been used by Queen Victoria's granddaughter Princess Alice has also been acquired and brought back into use. That royal connection has been reinforced by what is considered to be the jewel in the crown' of the collection in the form of a London & South Western Railway carriage that wasconstructed specifi cally for Queen Victoria's royal train in 1885 and later converted for her personal use during her golden jubilee celebrations in 1887. Still to be restored are another GER family saloon dating from 1877 that was later to be converted for the use of Edward, Prince of Wales and a coach that, when completed, will be the oldest operational Pullman carriage in the world. In the midst of gathering this stock together, Stephen has also restored an 0-6-0 saddle tank, Illingworth, that was built in 1916 and has, during its long career, helped the war effort in both the First and Second World Wars. As a sideline', Stephen and many volunteers have been involved in the purchase and setting up of a charitable trust and subsequent restoration of the 1903 North Eastern Railcar. This is a true pioneer being the fi rst railcar in the world to use internal combustion to drive a generator which in turn powered electric traction motors. Each piece in the collection has had a fascinating history from its construction through its working life and on into preservation. Along the way Stephen has collected many photographs and much information/memorabilia to complete their stories and these form the basis for this book

Sheldrake Press Railways of Britain, The: A Journey Through
Book SynopsisThe railway era began in Britain when steam was king. In the age of petrol and diesel, these once confident, rumbustious railways fell into decline, yet as their fortunes waned, the fascination for trains and all their works grew — and has if anything become more intense as congested roads and high-speed trains have sparked a revival in railway travel. In The Railways of Britain, Jack Simmons sympathetically tells the history of the railways and describes every major aspect of their equipment and operations: permanent way, buildings, locomotives, rolling stock, signalling and labour relations. He also makes journeys through the Pennines, Scotland, Essex and Southern England on which he acts as observer and guide. This third edition of one of the outstanding works of British railway literature has been substantially rewritten, revised and brought up to date. For the first time it has been fully illustrated in colour and black and white with more than 200 photographs, maps and engravings, many of them previously unpublished. Jack Simmons, late doyen of British railways historians, was Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Leicester. The Railways of Britain was first published in 1961 and is his best-known work. His other books include St Pancras Station, The Railway in England and Wales, 1830-1914, Transport Museums in Britain and Western Europe and The Railway in Town and Country as well as two volumes in the 11-volume Visual History of Modern Britain, of which he was General Editor.

Two Rivers Press All Change at Reading: The Railway and the
Book SynopsisIsambard Kingdom Brunel gave Reading an inconvenient station with but a single platform; after four major rebuilds it now has 15. It looks forward to electrification and the possibility of through trains to Heathrow, the City, Essex, North Kent, and even mainland Europe.

Quercus Publishing Marrakech Express
Book SynopsisBack in 1969 when Morocco's ancient capital was a hashish clouded happy mecca, Crosby, Stills and Nash recorded their cheesy (and hopelessly inaccurate) foot-tapping anthem 'Marrakech Express'. A generation on, award-winning journalist, author, and one-time glamrock fan Peter Millar uses what is now the country's best visited tourist destination as the embarkation point for a literally reverse-engineered train journey through this still exotic, diverse and challenging North African country, struggling to maintain its unique blend of tradition and tolerance in the turbulent winds of the Arab Spring.

Mortons Media Group Diesel Part 6: Brush Types 2s
Book SynopsisOne of the main pillars of the new diesel fleet came in the form of the Brush company''s diesel locomotive for mixed traffic work, the ''Type 2'' referring to the power rating of their Mirrlees engines 1,250hp.The name ''Brush'' it has to said is less than stirring after the fashion, say, of ''Deltics'' or ''Warships'' but an entire swath of British Railways, the Eastern Region, relied very heavily upon them for all manner of freight and passenger work; they were even suited to country branches in the wilds of East Anglia. In later years they were used much more widely, from the West Country to the far north of England. They were also long-lived, unlike many of their contemporaries that appeared in the ''Diesel Dawn'' of the 1950s and 1960s; the last was only withdrawn from service in 2017.
