Book SynopsisThe next generation - the children of Snow White, Cinderella, and others - have lives and stories of their own. And not just long ago and far away but (sort of) here and now! Enjoy!I was going to be a great protagonist. At least that's what my mom, Cinderella, kept telling me. I, however, had my doubts. Unlike most main characters at Lady Agnue's School for Princesses & Other Female Protagonists, I was opinionated, bold, and headstrong. Moreover, for a princess, I had a lot of issues. I'm talking vicious nightmares about people I've never met, a total stalker prince, and a Fairy Godmother for an enemy. But I digress. Because here's the thing about living in an enchanted realm of fairytale characters, crazy junk you never planned on happens all the time. One minute you could be practicing fainting exercises in Damsels in Distress class, sword fighting in a field, or flying on a Pegasus, and the next, BAM! Your book has begun and you're saddled with a prophecy that changes everything.I still don't know if I will be a great protagonist one day. But I know one thing about my fate, for certain. Despite what The Author and the antagonists have in store for me, whatever it costs. . .I'll be the one taking charge of my own story..The Crisanta Knight series - Book 1: Protagonist Bound; Book 2 - The Severance Game; Book 3 - Inherent Fate; Book 4 - The Liar, The Witch, & The Wormhole; Book 5 (to be released in April of 2019 - To Death & Back

Rowman & Littlefield The Fastest Hound Dog in the State of Maine

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPart fable, part folklore, The Fastest Hound Dog in the State of Maine is Yankee story telling at its very best. A man needs a dog to catch long-legged rabbits, so he buys a hound with longer legs than the rabbits. It's the fastest dog he's ever seen--the fastest dog anyone has ever seen. The dog is so fast, in fact, the man takes on the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad in some friendly competition. Hilarity ensues.Based on Maine folklore, and told as only John Gould can tell it, this story rightfully belongs to the times before television, before radio, when folks sat and talked and told stories. Yet it is a story for all times with its humor--warm as a Maine hearth--and distinct Yankee voice.

  • Voices Out of Africa in Twentieth-Century Spanish

Bucknell University Press Voices Out of Africa in Twentieth-Century Spanish

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisVoices Out of Africa in Twentieth-Century Spanish Caribbean Literature is a compelling exploration of how authors of the Spanish Caribbean (Cuba, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico) have incorporated the cultural legacy of Africa into their narrative fictions. This richly articulated study decodes and explores hidden layers of African-derived myths and symbolisms found in many of the major Spanish Caribbean works of prose fiction. Julia Hewitt ranges from the Afro-Cuban short stories of Lydia Cabrera and the historical novels of Alejo Carpentier, to the representation of the figure of the runaway slave—a foundational archetype of the Spanish Caribbean since the sixteenth century—to the contemporary salsa music-inspired narratives of the Puerto Ricans Edgardo Rodríguize Juliá, Luis Rafael Sánchez, and Ana Lydia Vega, and the provocative narratives of the contemporary Cuban writer, Zoé Valdés. Voices Out of Africa is an erudite, yet accessible and exhilarating, account of the multiple layers of the region's cultural expressions. In its scope, it does justice to the wealth and complexity of Caribbean culture; at the same time, it is a work of scholarship and theory that offers a near-encyclopedic perspective on Spanish Caribbean culture. Voices Out of Africa is the sort of book to which scholars and interested laypersons can return again and again to rummage through its pages in search of insights into Afro-Caribbean symbolism, myths, and cultural practices.

  • The OgreOs Progress: Images of the Ogre in Modern

Rowman & Littlefield The OgreOs Progress: Images of the Ogre in Modern

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines how modern French fiction writers have appropriated the ogre figure in order to evoke violence in all its voracity, as well as destructive time, which eats away the moments of our lives as the prototypical ogre of Western literature, Cronus, who devoured his own children. The ogre is a ubiquitous figure that appears not only in mythology and literature but also in real life. For French authors haunted by the horrors of World War II, it symbolizes the abominations of the Nazis and their French collaborators, whose memory has been rekindled in recent years, initiating a national malaise that historians have come to call the Vichy Syndrome. For other writers, the ogre is the sexual deviate who preys upon the innocent. This ogre too has roots in recent history: it began to appear in the 1970s, coinciding with the rise of French feminism, when violence towards women and children finally began to be openly confronted.

  • The Irish Fairy Tale: A Narrative Tradition from

Rowman & Littlefield The Irish Fairy Tale: A Narrative Tradition from

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBeginning with a critical reappraisal of the notion of “fairy tale” and extending it to include categories and genres which are in common usage in folklore and in literary studies, this book throws light on the general processes involved in storytelling. It illuminates the fundamental ways in which a culture is formed, while highlighting important features of the Irish narrative tradition, in all its wealth and variety and in its connections with the mythical and historical events of Ireland. The Irish Fairy Tale argues that the fairy tale is a kind of “neutral zone,” a place of transition as well as a meeting place for popular beliefs and individual creativity, oral tradition and literary works, historical sources and imaginary reconstructions, and for contrasting and converging views of the world, which altogether allow for a deeper and more sophisticated understanding of reality. The book focuses on stories by Yeats and Stephens, whose approach to the subject marks the culmination of a long tradition of attempts at linking past and present and of bridging the gap between what appear to be contradictory facets of a single culture. This leads to a comparative study of Joyce’s Dubliners, which illustrates the universal and exemplary nature of the notion of fairy tale put forward in the work.Trade ReviewCarrassi (University of Bari, Italy) contributes to the ever-burgeoning field of fairy tale studies with a densely packed volume that reveals various influences, including narratology, structuralism, archetypal criticism, and Catholicism. His focus is the fairy tale in Ireland from the Celtic period through the Irish Revival to James Joyce. But Carrassi's goal is to go beyond the regional and interrogate and then redefine the fairy tale genre itself. His aim, he writes, ‘is to analyze the relationships that, in a determined space-time context, have been created between two opposed ambits of the narrative tradition ... the oral and popular components and the written and cultured.’ Relying heavily on the foundational works of the field (by, for example, Max Lüthi, Vladimir Propp, Stith Thompson, and Tzvetan Todorov), Carrassi shuns more recent approaches, such as feminist and Marxist analyses. Focusing on what he terms the ‘narrative patrimony’ of Ireland and the ‘congenital narrativity’ of the Irish people, he hypothesizes about the process of composition, the meta-narrativity, and the meanings of the traditional tales. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the late 18th and early 19th centuries, attitudes toward history and national identity fostered a romantic rediscovery of folk and fairy tales. This is the period of the Golden Age of folk and fairy tales, when European folklorists sought to understand and redefine the present through the common tales of the past, and long neglected stories became recognized as cultural treasures. In this rich collection, distinguished expert of fairy tales Jack Zipes continues his lifelong exploration of the story-telling tradition with a focus on the Golden Age. Included are one hundred eighty-two tales--many available in English for the first time--grouped into eighteen tale types. Zipes provides an engaging general Introduction that discusses the folk and fairy tale tradition, the impact of the Brothers Grimm, and the significance of categorizing tales into various types.Short introductions to each tale type that discuss its history, characteristics, and variants provide readers with important background information. Also included are annotations, short biographies of folklorists of the period, and a substantial bibliography.Eighteen original art works by students of the art department of Anglia Ruskin University not only illustrate the eighteen tale types, but also provide delightful—and sometimes astonishing—21st-century artistic interpretations of them.Trade Review"Jack Zipes is back with a massive, beautifully produced volume. It is basically an anthology of mostly translated texts, but with a thirty-seven-page presentation and illuminating introductions to each of the eighteen thematic sections. At the end, we get fifteen pages of short biographies of the collectors of the tales and a twenty-eight-page bibliography of collections, reference works, and criticism. . . . A master in his field has to be congratulated on yet another achievement." --Hans Kuhn, Australian National University, in Journal of Folklore Research"Those with a particular interest in the early attempts at what is now considered the heart of the discipline of folklore will be delighted by what Zipes has gathered. . . . The stories are divided by ATU numbers into eighteen different categories that contain the most well-known tales. . . . Each category has at least seven tales, often more, and Zipes provides each with a concise but helpful introduction that describes the "general format" of the tale type and an overview of its history. The tales themselves are annotated, always including the precise source in which the text was found. Every category begins with the earliest Grimm version of the text and, if possible, a later version of two from the brothers. Also included in the book is a large variety of less familiar versions of tales. . . . I was excited to discover so many tales and tellers I had never come across before. . . . The book has an extensive bibliography, which by itself is an enormous contribution to nineteenth-century fairy-tale scholarship, and, helpfully a section with short biographies of the contributing collectors. . . . The Golden Age of Folk and Fairy Tales fills a neglected gap by gathering the brightest examples of oral fairy-tale collection in its golden age. Such a text aids immeasurably the work of scholars who are interested in both folklore and the nineteenth century but his highly recommended for anyone fascinated by the fairy-tale form and its history." —Brittany Warman, The Ohio State University, in Marvels & Tales: Journal of Fairy-Tale Studies"With the publication of The Golden Age of Folk and Fairy Tales, Zipes has presented us with a rich and comprehensive anthology which functions equally well as a reference/resource book and a textbook, thus being well-suited for both the seasoned researcher and the novice scholar. It seems to lend itself particularly well for use in the classroom. This accessible and highly useful volume will certainly make an excellent addition to the library of any scholar or student interested in folk narratives in general, and folk and fairy tales in particular." —Nada Kujundžić, in Libri & Liberi

  • Le Morte D'Arthur

Book SynopsisThis brisk retelling of Le Morte D'Arthur highlights the narrative drive, humor, and poignancy of Sir Thomas Malory’s original while updating his fifteenth-century English and selectively pruning over-elaborate passages that can try the patience of modern readers. The result is an adaptation that readers can enjoy as a fresh approach to Malory's sprawling masterpiece. The book's most famous episodes--the sword in the stone, the cataclysmic final battle--are all here, while lesser-known key episodes stand forth with new brightness and clarity. The text is accompanied by an up-to-date bibliography, including websites and video resources, and a descriptive index keyed--like the retelling itself--to the book and chapter divisions of William Caxton's first printed edition of 1485.Trade Review"I've just finished reading Joseph Glaser's Le Morte D'Arthur. I'm very pleased with it: the introduction is helpful without becoming an extended essay, the suggested reading seems solid and diverse, and the index is VERY useful, even for someone who has read Malory before. At last, a reader can keep all the knights and ladies straight! A fine entry point to a grand text, and when I next have an occasion to teach a course involving chivalry, I'll plan to use this very affordable edition." —Craig Caldwell, Department of History, Appalachian State University"A highly readable, reduced, and modernized Malory. . . . The effective condensation of a seemingly uncontainable network of narratives is an impressive feat. . . . Glaser's storylines are distinct, not dense, his dialogue is concise, not digressive, and his language is unassuming, not luxuriant. While these features do not match most readers' impressions of Malory's style, his Arthurian tales of adventure, love, death, and betrayal are all here for a new readership to relish. "[T]his new narrative brings the intersections of plot lines to the fore, helping readers to see the larger structural connections between seemingly disparate episodes and themes. With some of the density removed, readers can more readily see storylines that often get submerged, such as the ongoing feud between the families of King Pellinor and King Lot that starts, stops, and reignites across multiple books. Glaser even appends a detailed index of characters and important objects that includes short descriptions of their appearances in sequence throughout the text. This index is exceedingly helpful because it highlights unifying themes and character development as well as clearly demonstrates that the main character of the Morte is Lancelot, not Arthur. Whereas Arthur's index entry is approximately a page and a half long, Tristram's is two pages, and Lancelot's is close to three. The index also reveals amusing repetitions and contradictions, including two dead Colgrevaunces and five Elaines." —Alex Mueller, University of Massachusetts, Boston, in The Medieval Review"Glaser's project of modernizing and condensing Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur is refreshingly successful. Both an extremely accessible introduction to the text for beginners and a handy reference tool for experts, the compact volume can easily be enjoyed by all modern readers." —Rachel Levinson-Emley, University of California, Santa Barbara, in Comitatus"Preserves most of the original and provides a simplified reduction for the bewildering array of plot lines and characters who wind in, and out, and often back in again to the narrative thread. Hackett Publishing Company and Joseph Glaser have provided an aesthetically appealing, serviceable, and inexpensive addition to the Malory shelf.” —Katherine Haynes, Aquinas College Nashville, in Sixteenth Century Journal

Book Synopsis"This masterful translation of one of the most popular books of world literature makes available to an English readership the animal tales known collectively as Kalila and Dimna. Named after the two jackals of Pancatantra fame, this collection of stories is based on a 12th-century Persian translation of an 8th-century original Arabic rendition by Ibn al-Muqaffa‘. Set within a frame narrative of counsels given to the Raja of India by his Brahmin minister, the engaging tales about cats and mice, storks and crabs, tortoises and geese, owls and crows, and princes and ascetics, function as cautionary illustrations of human predicaments and all-too-human vices and virtues. Far from being a collection of children’s fables, Kalila and Dimna is a Machiavellian mirror for princes containing advice on how to preserve oneself from one’s enemies and get ahead at court and in life. The dialogues that constitute the bulk of the narrative harbor a dramatic immediacy, exerting a powerful effect even on a modern-day reader." —Maria Subtelny, University of TorontoTrade Review"Kalila and Dimna is an important work of world literature that pertains to several areas of intellectual inquiry: the history of literary translation, cultural exchange, animals and allegory, and mirrors for princes. Thackston’s translation of this classical Persian text is elegant and idiomatic, and the multiple prefaces are useful in tracking the movement of this work across cultures. This is a book that can be enjoyed by students, scholars, and general readers alike." —Sunil Sharma, Boston University

Book SynopsisThe magical land of Xanth is in peril in this follow-up to Board Stiff by New York Times–bestselling author Piers Anthony. “It occurs to me that you folk are no ordinary group,” the troll said. “We're on a special mission to eliminate the last of the anti-pun virus. We are a bit unusual.” Astrid Basilisk-Cockatrice is the daughter of anonymous parents who whiled away a dull minute by generating her on a warm compost pile, then went their own deadly ways, never to see her or each other again. She found herself a soul, but her gaze is fatal and her touch is toxic. That’s not so strange in the Land of Xanth, where everyone has a unique magical talent, and charms, curses, and enchanted puzzles lie around every corner. Now, Astrid and her companions are finishing the cleanup of a virus that ravaged the puns of Xanth, and new Quests are already popping up. For instance, Astrid is attempting to fulfill her mission in life, if only she can figure out what that is. And then there’s the missing Question from the Good Magician’s Book of Answers. Not to mention the small matter of a Demon Wager regarding the impending destruction of Xanth. But it’s nothing Astrid and her motley crew of lovely maidens and strapping men can’t handle . . . they hope. Piers Anthony delivers another tale set in the bestselling world of Xanth, filled with magic, surprises, adventure, and a few puns. Here’s what the author has to say about his new book: “Five Portraits is a kind of sequel to Board Stiff in that it picks up where the other leaves off, with the same characters. Apart from that, it’s one of my favorites within the series. There’s something about Astrid Basilisk that appeals to me: a very pretty girl whose very glance is deadly, yet she’s a nice person whose selfless effort to save five difficult children from future Xanth is thoroughly worthy. I also like the theme of the power of unlikely friendship. Not just Xanth, but Mundania, too, would be better if there were more such friendships.”Trade Review“Piers Anthony is one of those authors who can perform magic with the ordinary. . . . [He] is a craftsman.” —A Reader’s Guide to Science Fiction
