Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Ardit Gjebreas Projekt Jon
Book SynopsisAs market reforms and migration transformed Albania in the early 1990s, Ardit Gjebrea began mixing traditional folk music with world music and Italian pop. The resulting album, Projekt Jon (1997), provided a new model for songWestern and cosmopolitan, yet firmly rooted in the fertile soil of the nationagainst a backdrop of deepening political uncertainty about the very future of Albania. The Ionian Project announced itself with the frenetic beating of the daullë and the traditional cries of Albania's highland shepherd. This sprawling collaboration between singer-songwriter Ardit Gjebrea, folk singer Hysni Zela, producer Paul Mazzolini, and a team of crack studio musicians in Italy, had an outsized ambition: to transcend the small postsocialist nation-state's borders, imaginatively crafting through sound a new home in Europe for its citizens. But as Gjebrea prepared to launch Projekt Jon, violence prompted by the collapse of widespread pyramid schem

The Library of America Stephen Foster & Co.: Lyrics of the First Great
Book SynopsisStephen Foster is the trunk of the tree of American song. His blackface minstrel songs, including “Oh! Susanna,” “Old Folks at Home” (“Way down upon the Swanee River…”), and “My Old Kentucky Home,” and his parlor ballads, such as “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” and “Beautiful Dreamer,” have inspired composers, songwriters, and performers from Charles Ives and George Gershwin to Ray Charles and James Taylor. Foster devoted as much care and craft to his lyrics as he did to his timeless melodies. In this comprehensive new selection, acclaimed music historian Ken Emerson introduces and annotates the lyrics to more than thirty of Foster’s best and best-known songs. These masterpieces by America’s first full-time professional songwriter, forebear of Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Carole King, and Bob Dylan, have been so deeply absorbed into our culture that they are often assumed to be folk music. Alongside are fifty other 19th-century American popular songs that influenced Foster or that he in turn influenced, from “Home! Sweet Home!” in the 1820s to “Western Home” (the original “Home on the Range”) in the 1870s.About the American Poets ProjectElegantly designed in compact editions, printed on acid-free paper, and textually authoritative, the American Poets Project makes available the full range of the American poetic accomplishment, selected and introduced by today’s most discerning poets and critics.Trade Review“Pop-song scholar Emerson presents 81 such songs in their earliest incarnations in this neat collection, sorting them in categories that, used in their heyday, still make sense: Plantation Melodies, Parlor Songs, Drinking and Temperance Songs, Songs of Protest and Poverty, War Songs, and Comic Songs. . . . Essential Americana.”—Booklist

Chronicle Books Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art * Words and Wisdom
Book SynopsisAmerica's greatest folk singer and songwriter, philosopher, political analyst, and man-of-the-people, Woody Guthrie and his passionate social politics and deep humanity are as crucial in the America of today as they were in the turbulent 1930s and 1940s. He wrote well over 3,000 songs (including 'This Land is Your Land'), yet he was also a poet, painter, illustrator, novelist, journal keeper, and great letter writer. This fresh, intimate, and beautifully designed book tells Woody's story largely through his own personal writing, lyrics, and artwork, bringing his voice urgently to life. Woody's essential self portrait, carefully-curated by Woody's daughter Nora and award-winning music historian Robert Santelli, is supplemented with contributions by Chuck D., Ani DiFranco, Douglas Brinkley, Arlo Guthrie, and others. Featuring never-before-published handwritten lyrics to some of his greatest songs, personal diary entries, doodles, jokes, and piercing insights on politics and justice, this is an undeniable and important celebration of Woody's powerful life's work.

University of Missouri Press The Missouri Harmony Songbook
Book SynopsisWith a history dating back to 1820, The Missouri Harmony was the most popular of all frontier shape-note tune books. The 185 songs in the collection were favorites used in Protestant churches and singing schools, and many were already deeply rooted in American culture by the time of its first publication. The story of the book is the story of a burgeoning nation, with its origins in a St. Louis school (where it was introduced by singing master Allen Carden) and its spread along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. It's said that even Abraham Lincoln and his sweetheart Ann Rutledge sang from The Missouri Harmony at her father's tavern in Illinois. Compilations such as The Missouri Harmony not only helped teach midwesterners to read music but also carried a uniquely American heritage of shaped notes, a system of musical notation that grew out of the singing school movement in eighteenth-century New England. Furthermore, this heritage would be, according to composer Virgil Thomson, ""the musical basis of almost everything we make, of Negro spirituals, of cowboy songs, of popular ballads, of blues, of hymns, of doggerel ditties, and all our operas and symphonies.

Bohlau Verlag Playing Multipart Music: Solo and Ensemble
Book SynopsisEuropean Voices IV presents new perspectives on two basic performance styles of traditional music of Europe: 1) Solo playing on single instruments with the possibility for multipart texture, for instance different bagpipes and bowed instruments. 2) Practices of playing in small ensembles with a leading role of the violin and later of wind instruments, widespread in Central and Eastern Europe. 14 renowned ethnomusicologists from eleven countries offer new insights on style, repertoire, ways of musical thinking and performance behaviour. Their studies are based on historical sources as well as of a vivid exchange with local musicians during in-depth ethnographic fieldwork.
