Book SynopsisThe Tibetan Book of the Dead: Awakening Upon Dying, with introductory commentary by Dzogchen Buddhist master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, is a new translation of the ancient text also known as The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate State. Both a practical guide and intriguing historical, cultural, and spiritual document, this new version incorporates recent discoveries that have allowed for a better translation of previously ambiguous passages.   Revealing a set of instructions designed to facilitate the inner liberation of the dead or dying person, the book provides a guide to navigating the bardo--the interval between death and rebirth. Originally composed by Padmasambhava, an important Indian master of the eighth century, the Tibetan Book of the Dead was concealed in Tibet until it was discovered in the fourteenth century by Karma Lingpa, a famous Tibetan tertön (discoverer of ancient texts). Describing in detail the characteristics and fantastic visions of each stage beyond death, the book includes invocations to be read aloud to the dying person, to help his or her successful journey toward the stage of liberation.   Chögyal Namkhai Norbu''s introduction clarifies the texts from the Dzogchen point of view and provides a scholarly summary of the ancient material based on his oral teachings and written works. In addition, material from several of Namkhai Norbu''s more recent written works and oral teachers have been added, including an essay on the four intermediate states after death entitled Birth, Life, and Death. A full-color 16-page insert of traditional Tibetan art highlights Tibet''s unique aesthetic wisdom.

Book SynopsisThis book is a reverberant homage to the country of Tibet which inhabits and inspires the author. It is also a living testimony to the pilgrims who ambulate this holy land, a circumstantiation of their ardent faith, and of their desire to be free from the samsaric cycles and of the karma that perpetually propels and nourishes the Dharma Path of the earth''s ever-recurrent planetary rounds. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Tibetan district of Tsari with its sacred snow-covered peak of Pure Crystal Mountain has long been a place of symbolic and ritual significance for Tibetan peoples. In this book, Toni Huber provides the first thorough study of a major Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage center and cult mountain, and explores the esoteric and popular traditions of ritual there. The main focus is on the period of the 1940s and ''50s, just prior to the 1959 Lhasa uprising and subsequent Tibetan diaspora into South Asia. Huber''s work thus documents Tibetan life patterns and cultural traditions which have largely disappeared with the advent of Chinese colonial modernity in Tibet. In addition to the work''s documentary content, Huber offers discussion and analysis of the construction and meaning of Tibetan cultural categories of space, place, and person, and the practice of ritual and organization of traditional society in relation to them.Trade Reviewan extremely valuable contribution both to the study of religion and ritual in general and to Tibetan studies in particular ... Specialists and nonspecialists alike will benefit from several readings of this work. Its rich accounts of tantric cosmology, ritual regimes, and local lifeways are accessibly written with relatively few technical terms, yet supplemented with long footnotes and a glossary of Wylie transliterations for all Tibetan words rendered phonetically in the text ... overall though, this work is a ground breaking and important that should be required reading for all students of Tibet, Asian Studies, pilgrimmage, and religion and ritual in general. * Charlene Makley, Journal of the American Academy of Religion *

Book SynopsisThe Tibetan Book of the Dead is one of the texts that, according to legend, Padma-Sambhava was compelled to hide during his visit to Tibet in the late 8th century. The guru hid his books in stones, lakes, and pillars because the Tibetans of that day and age were somehow unprepared for their teachings. Now, in the form of the ever-popular Tibetan Book of the Dead, these teachings are constantly being discovered and rediscovered by Western readers of many different backgrounds--a phenomenon which began in 1927 with Oxford''s first edition of Dr. Evans-Wentz''s landmark volume. While it is traditionally used as a mortuary text, to be read or recited in the presence of a dead or dying person, this book--which relates the whole experience of death and rebirth in three intermediate states of being--was originally understood as a guide not only for the dead but also for the living. As a contribution to the science of death and dying--not to mention the belief in life after death, or the belieTrade ReviewDr. Evans-Wentz, who literally sat at the feet of a Tibetan lama for years in order to acquire his wisdom...not only displays a deeply sympathetic interest in those esoteric doctrines so characteristic of the genius of the East, but likewise possesses the rare faculty of making them more or less intelligible to the layman. * Anthropology (on the previous edition) *Table of ContentsForeword by Donald S Lopez Jr ; Suggested Readings ; Preface to the 1960 Paperback edition ; Preface to the Third Edition ; Preface to the Second Edition ; Preface to the First Edition ; Book I, Part I: The Bardo of the Moments of Death ; Book I, Part II: The Bardo of the Experiencing of Reality ; Book II, Part I: The Sidpa Bardo ; Book II, Part II: The Process of Rebirth ; Afterword: The Long Life of 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead' by Donald S Lopez Jr. ; Index

  • Oxford University Press Inc Ocean of Reasoning

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTsong khapa (14th-century) is arguably the most important and influential philosopher in Tibetan history. An Ocean of Reasoning is the most extensive and perhaps the deepest extant commentary on Nagarjuna''s Mulamadhyamakakarika (Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way), and it can be argued that it is impossible to discuss Nagarjuna''s work in an informed way without consulting it. It discusses alternative readings of the text and prior commentaries and provides a detailed exegesis, constituting a systematic presentation of Madhyamaka Buddhist philosophy. Despite its central importance, however, of Tsong khapa''s three most important texts, only An Ocean of Reasoning remains untranslated, perhaps because it is both philosophically and linguistically challenging, demanding a rare combination of abilities on the part of a translator. Jay Garfield and Ngawang Samten bring the requisite skills to this difficult task, combining between them expertise in Western and Indian philosophy, and fluency in Tibetan, Sanskrit, and English. The resulting translation of this important text will not only be a landmark contribution to the scholarship of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, but will serve as a valuable companion volume to Jay Garfield''s highly successful translation of The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThanks to the international celebrity of the present Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhism is attracting more attention than at any time in its history. Although there have been numerous specialist studies of individual Tibetan texts, however, no scholarly work has as yet done justice to the rich variety of types of Tibetan discourse. This book fills this lacuna, bringing to bear the best methodological insights of the contemporary human sciences, and at the same time conveying to non-specialist readers an impression of the broad domain of Tibetan religious and philosophical thought. For over a millenium a Tibetan Buddhist intelligentsia produced a vast literature in which they explored the legacy of Indian (and to a lesser extent Chinese) Buddhism, often with exceptional rigor and creativity. At the same time, they also articulated perspectives and raised questions that reflected a distinctly Tibetan heritage, above and beyond the impetus derived from foreign sources. The views they generated,Trade Review"...a marvel of erudition....this is a fascinating and informative book."--Parabola "This is an unusual, stimulating piece of scholarship. It is exhaustively researched, linked deeply and broadly to the larger discussions circulating through Tibetan studies and the histories of religions. It is fair-minded in relation to its sources, critical of traditional historiography without being belligerent. Not only will scholars of Tibetan Buddhism benefit from this work, but also historians of Tibet generally, practitioners of tantric Buddhism, philosophers and mythologists should have this book on their shelves."--Transcendent Philosophy
