Book SynopsisThe Göttingen Handel Festival had to be canceled in the anniversary year 2020, apart from a few digital substitute events, like almost all other music festivals. This also affected the annual symposium and the lecture, which each make up the main part of the GHB. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the Handel Society decided to keep the GHB published on a regular basis. The present volume therefore brings together, inspired by the anniversary year, five independent contributions that are dedicated to particular aspects of Handel's reception in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This includes a documentation of the Göttingen anniversary exhibition from 2020. Oskar Hagen's text adaptation of Handel's 'Rodelinda', which was created for the Göttingen performance in 1920, will also be republished for the occasion.

Contact with a French-influenced court musician would also have recommended a stay in Paris; in the German-speaking area, stays in Dresden, Wolfenbüttel or Vienna would also have been conceivable. A trip to London, on the other hand, was not completely isolated, but unusual enough. It was the aim of last year's Handel Symposium to further narrow down and sharpen these music-specific requirements. Book SynopsisDer vorliegende Band ist eine Arbeit zu musikalischen Aspekten der Koptischen Liturgie, die Musik der christlichen Gemeinschaft Agyptens. Die Musik einer der altesten christlichen Kulturen wird in der koptologischen sowie musikologischen Literatur nur wenig erwahnt und oft sogar ganz weggelassen. Aus den reichhaltigen Melodien der koptischen liturgischen Musik wurden die Melodien der Psalmodia gewahlt zu Analysen und musikalischen Transkriptionen. Die verschiedenen kirchlichen Festtage kennzeichnen sich durch verschiedene Melodien auf denselben Texten. Die Arbeit ist dreiteilig und besteht im ersten Teil aus einer kurzen Ubersicht uber die koptische Musikgeschichte, einer Einfuhrung in das nachtlichen Ritual Psalmodia mit ihren verschiedenen Auffuhrungen, aus Gesprachen mit Teilnehmern an dem Ritual Psalmodia, einer Literaturubersicht und Notationsbeispielen zeitgenossischer Ausfuhrenden. Der zweite Teil enthalt die Analysen der verschiedenen Festtagsmelodien, die in der Psalmodia zur Verwendung kommen. Verschiedene Interpretationen werden miteinander verglichen. Auffallend an den Analysen sind die musikalischen Formeln aus denen die verschiedenen Melodien wie mit farbigen Mosaiksteinen zusammengestellt sind und die Positionen an denen sie in den Melodien gefunden wurden. Im dritten Teil befinden sich die Transkriptionen der analysierten Melodien in westlicher Musiknotation. Auf einer dazu gefugten CD ist eine Auswahl der Gesange zu horen, wobei historische Aufnahmen abgewechselt werden mit Aufnahmen wahrend der Zeremonien oder mit Tonbandern, die Kantoren fur ihre Studenten zu Studienzwecken aufgenommen haben.

Book SynopsisAccidentals in Renaissance music have long been a problem for performers and editors, for they are often not fully prescribed in Franco-Flemish music. In the 20th century, a set of ‘rules of musica ficta’ were assembled to describe performers’ practice in the 15th and 16th centuries, but the three primary rules contradict each other when applied to the repertory. The conflict forces one or more rules to be set aside in certain passages. Typically, modern editors sacrifice the linear rule in favor of harmonic aspects. The modern preference relies on a medieval concept—the exclusion of mi contra fa—which the author challenges. When the prohibition against mi contra fa is removed from singers' concerns, and understood as a rule aimed at composers—one they took delight in breaking at times—a proper balance between the three rules is regained, and an incisive and expanded harmonic world is revealed.
