Book SynopsisMusic and sound shape the emotional content of audio-visual media and carry different meanings. This volume considers audio-visual material as a primary source for historiography. By analyzing how the same sounds are used in different media contexts at different times, the contributors intend to challenge the linear perspective of (music) history based on canonic authority. The book discusses AV-Documents (analysis in context), methodological questions (implications for research, education, and popularization of knowledge), archives of cultural memory (from the perspective of Cultural Studies) as well as digitalization and its consequences (organization of knowledge).

Book SynopsisMusic and Democracy explores music as a resource for societal transformation processes. This book provides recent insights into how individuals and groups used and still use music to achieve social, cultural, and political participation and bring about social change. The contributors present outstanding perspectives on the topic: From the promise and myth of democratization through music technology to the use of music in imposing authoritarian, neoliberal or even fascist political ideas in the past and present up to music's impact on political systems, governmental representation, and socio-political realities. The volume further features approaches in the fields of gender, migration, disability, and digitalization.Table of ContentsAmbivalences in Music and Democracy: Introductory Remarks; Part 1: From Recorded Democracy to Digital Participation? Part 2: Political Impacts of Bourgeois Music Culture; Part 3: (Non‐)Democratic Participation in Popular Music and Performance Cultures; Part 4: Sonic Implications of Political Changes.

Book SynopsisResearch on electronic dance music communities has been initiated by scholars in the fields of sociology, cultural studies, public health research and others. Linguistic aspects, however, are rarely considered. Anita Jóri fills this gap of research and suggests a new perspective by looking at these communities as a discourse community. She gives an overview of the language use and discourse characteristics of this community while applying a mixed methodology of linguistic discourse analysis and cultural studies. The book is aimed at researchers and students in the fields of applied linguistics, popular music, media, communication and cultural studies.Table of ContentsAcknowledgement; List of Abbreviations; Introduction; Theoretical Investigation; Research Aims and Questions; Methods; Analysis; Summary of Analysis and Research Findings; Final Conclusions and Future Considerations; References; Sources of Linguistic Data; Attachments.

Book SynopsisIf pictures can be sexist, can analysing sound reveal sexism, too? Where is the language to discuss sexism in music? L.J. Müller tackles these important questions in their 2018 German book titled Sound und Sexismus, which was awarded the IASPM 2019 book prize. Analysing the voices of Kurt Cobain, Kate Bush, Björk and others, Müller demonstrates how gender is performed vocally and interacts with gendered aspects of embodiment and affect. The book is written from a strongly positioned and personal feminist perspective and is appealing to readers from various backgrounds -- singers, producers, music lovers, as well as academics and anyone with an interest in feminist takes on pop culture.

Book SynopsisCan sound be perceived independently of its social dimension? Or is it always embedded in a discursive network? POSTCOLONIAL REPERCUSSIONS explores these questions in form of a collective conversation. The contributors have collected sound stories and sound knowledge from Brazil to Morocco, listened to resonances from the Underground and the Pacific Ocean, from Popular Music and speech recognition. The anthology gathers heterogeneous approaches to emancipatory forms of ontological listening as well as pleas for critical fabulation and a practice of care. It tells us about opportunities, perspectives and the (im)possibility of decolonised listening.Table of ContentsInstead of an Editorial; A Conversation on Race, Sound, and the Im/possibility of Decolonised Listening; Playing it Back. On that occasion he was celebrated with the festschrift Musikvidenskabelige kompositioner (Musicological compositions). As Head of the Music and Theatre Department Niels Krabbe is a key figure in Danish musicology and in the musical world in general. The collection at the Royal Library is second to none in Scandinavia due to its comprehensiveness, depth and importance, which goes way beyond the borders of the country. The festschrift contains 46 contributions in the fields of music, musicological research, librarianship, social history, cultural history, and history of reception, which are characteristic of Krabbe''s approach.

Book SynopsisText in English, Danish & German. On 19 April 2008, professor John D Bergsagel celebrated his 80th birthday, and three weeks later -- on 8 May -- Professor Heinrich W Schwab attained the age of 70. The Department of Musicology at the University of Copenhagen and The Royal Library have decided to acknowledge the excellence of these two scholars by a double Festschrift, A due. Both have been working at the Music Department of the University of Copenhagen and have collaborated with The Royal Library on various projects. This publication contains contributions from 44 colleagues, who thus -- in topics covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day -- give their voice in the honouring of the two scholars for their musical scholarship. As it may be seen from the table of contents, the publication covers a broad range both in time and in topics, which are all included in the scholarly sphere of Bergsagel and Schwab.

    15 in stock

    3 in stock
