Hirmer Verlag Eduardo Terrazas (Spanish Edition): Cosmos
Book Synopsis"Cosmos" offers new approaches on the stunning art works of Eduardo Terrazas (* 1936). Four well known authors present a multidisciplinary vision on the artists ongoing series "Possibilities of a Structure". Which suggests at once a curiosity in the fabric of our universe and a profoundly human hope for an underlying rationality behind the chaos of the world. Eduardo Terrazas has explored a lifetime’s worth of questions about the nature of the universe through the microcosm of his images. He derives his visual reflections with a basic geometric structure and a technique that is inspired by the Huichol tablas from Mexican indigenous tribes. His highly colourful and playful series "Possibilities of a Structure" – of which Cosmos is a subseries – has been an ongoing project since 1974 and comprises over 650 works until today: an artistic exploration of the boundaries of the infinite.

Hirmer Verlag C.C. Wang: Lines of Abstraction
Book SynopsisC.C. Wang (1907–2003) is best known as a preeminent twentieth-century connoisseur and collector of pre-modern Chinese art, a reputation that often overshadows his own art. Lines of Abstraction brings attention to Wang’s artistic experimentations. Spanning seven decades, the catalog focuses on the artist’s distinctive synthesis of Chinese literati ink art and American postwar abstraction. Born to a family of scholar-officials at the twilight of the Qing dynasty, Wang mastered the traditional ink and brush techniques in Republican China and immigrated to New York City. There he sought to perfect the literati painting, a genre associated with Chinese artist-intellectuals that blends calligraphy, painting, and poetry. Drawing inspiration from this historic art form, as well as New York’s artistic climate in the wake of World War II, he advanced breakthrough transformations in ink painting. Held twenty years after the artist’s death, a 2023 exhibit of Wang’s art was hosted by two venues, one at Hunter College and the second at the University of Minnesota. This exhibition catalog includes one hundred color images and features contributions by Daniel Greenberg and Joseph Scheier-Dolberg.

Hirmer Verlag Komar and Melamid: A Lesson in History
Book SynopsisAmong the most compelling artists in the history of conceptual art, the Russian-Americans Komar and Melamid used humor and irony to lambaste Soviet officialdom. With new scholarship and full-color illustrations, the book explores their journey from working under an oppressive regime to finding new subjects in the US for their provocative critique. From the invention of Sots Art, a conceptual movement that emerged in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union, to their sardonic Most Wanted Paintings project, based on market research, to the end of their joint career in the US, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid challenged viewers with provocative, witty and ironic art. Lavishly illustrated the book includes the latest scholarship on the duo and historically important texts, offering a renewed interpretation of the artists’ social and political concerns.

Hirmer Verlag Re-Connect: Art and Conflict in Brotherland
Book SynopsisTransnational artistic creation has become a matter of course in our globalized world. But what did migrant art production look like in the GDR? The volume highlights, among other things, the cultural diplomacy of the GDR and its effects, employment relationships of contract workers and taboo racism. Foreign artists from the socialist brother countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Israel or Uruguay studied at the art academies of the GDR. What became of them and why they are not mentioned in retrospectives on GDR art? Their works are now the center of attention. At the same time, the history of immigration and the memory of reunification are told from the perspective of East German migrants.

Hirmer Verlag Arnulf Rainer: Rosarot Himmelblau
Book SynopsisMaster of overpainting – experience the fascinating oeuvre of Arnulf Rainer. The art of Arnulf Rainer (*1929) is baffling. The “black overpainting”, with which he covers previous work, is world famous. We overlook the fact that overpaintings in red, blue, green and white also exist and thus that colour always belonged to his means of expression, as this volume vividly demonstrates. Characteristic of Rainer’s work is not only the use of paint, but also the way that he applies it, as the energetic use of physical strength in his hand and finger paintings from the 1970s and 1980s shows. At the end of this period he changed over to a more transparent painting method and used broad brushes to apply the paint like a veil. The visually stunning publication presents works from widely differing series, including Blattmalerei, Engel, Geologica, Goya, Landschaften, Mikrokosmos and Makrokosmos.

Artguide s.r.o. Proof - Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein, Robert
Book SynopsisFeaturing works by Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein and Robert Longo, Proof offers insight into the singularity of vision through which artists can reflect the social, cultural and political complexities of their times. Spanning eras and continents, each of these artists witnessed the turbulent transition from one century to another, experiencing the seismic impacts of revolution, civil rights movements and war. While Goya served church and king, Eisenstein the state, and Longo emerged during the rise of the contemporary art market--the dominant benefactors of each period--they all rose to prominence through developing nuanced practices that challenged expectations. With commissioned essays by journalist, activist and author Chris Hedges, artist Vadim Zakharov and Garage Chief Curator Kate Fowle, plus an interview with Longo, this book is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name.

Skira The Secret of the Gondola
Book SynopsisA masterpiece by Canaletto leads a young art historian on the trail of an unsolved mystery. A young art historian pursuing academic success. A painting by the most famous eighteenth-century painter of vedute, Canaletto. A gondola once possibly belonging to the poet Robert Browning – and who else before him? These are the key elements of the novel. When Jeremy Allyn is assigned Canaletto’s Vedute by his teacher as the topic for his dissertation – a subject many have already written about – he realizes he must find an original perspective. He therefore decides to focus on Canaletto’s figures, a secondary feature of his celebrated architectural scenes. This marks the beginning of an adventure with unexpected turns that will lead Jeremy to make some astonishing discoveries and to uncover a crime which had remained buried for centuries.
