Book SynopsisSymbolic places endow physical spaces with meaning. They impart knowledge about historical events, narrate stories, or stand for specific concerns. While the creation of symbolic places used to be mostly the task of politics and administration, today civil society turns its attention toward such locations. They are of great potential significance, moreover, for urban development—provided they are advanced for the sake of the common good. This book sheds light on the characteristics of symbolic places, their functioning, and the challenges and obstacles they confront. The collected examples range from historically fraught places such as Berlin’s Olympic Grounds all the way to places of collective self-empowerment like the self-managed Navarinou Park in Athens. Contributions by distinguished authors from the fields of history, social science, urban planning, and urban marketing encourage readers to take up recognized— but also controversial— symbolic places. Or, as suggested by the title of this anthology, to actively "make" them through collective discussions and decision-making processes.

Book SynopsisHow can city planners of the green building transition rethink and reuse what already exists, rather than perpetually looking for something new? What planning cultures does an open society need? What points of collaboration are missing between city officials and local stakeholders? This book highlights Mannheim-Käfertal as a compelling case study to explore these questions, given its exceptional transformation driven by the conversion of former military sites in the neighborhood. Through an experimental process, diverse stakeholders are working to establish a social and green center that combines old and new. Cross-agency partnerships, urban development, the creation of public spaces, and interventions at a 1:1 scale are being employed as part of a cooperative strategy for revitalizing existing urban spaces. Piazza Spinelli demonstrates how complex urban environments can be reimagined, developed, and anchored in the local community.

They are urban spaces shaped and characterized by the facades of buildings. In the face of today's climatic requirements, how can we design the city streets of the future to be distinctive and inviting urban spaces? For over a decade, the Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebensfähigkeit der Stadt has dedicated itself to fundamental questions in urban development. The contributions in this volume present discussions from experts in both the theory and practice of a range of different disciplines, as well as from the heads of various German city planning departments, on how the functional and traffic needs of city streets can be combined with their architectural, urban design, and ecological requirements. Birkhauser Die Nachricht, ein Medium: Generische Medialität,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWith her inversion of McLuhan’s famous dictum that the medium be the message, the author attempts to sketch a concept of mediality that is capable of hosting and accommodating the self-referential agility of medialized instrumentality within an element of communicability. Mediality is conceived as virtual dis-positivity, and its core predication is to receive and index the totality of what can be a formally-symbolic, and hence a communicable, object. So conceived, mediality foils purely logical, as well as purely fictional notions of order and is capable of opening up the possibility of a civic architectonics, one capable of articulating its assemblages with polyvalent and discretely variable elements, and in a multitude of competing manners. In this book, the author traces the possibility of such an architectonics from a diagnostic and cultural-historical point of view.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe concept of Layered Morphologies is a theoretical and methodological approach that investigates the coevolutionary nature of architecture and settlements, to propose an organic and integrated approach to their reading, protection and design enhancement. Transcending some usual spatial ontologies and operating across interdisciplinary fields, it promotes a renewed notion of built heritage as historicised architecture, and landscape as a structure of structures, where any act of modification should start from recognising pre-existing signs, typo-morphological structures, and writing of the ground and formal orders. Advancing critical-theoretical propositions while verifying their operational value in the case study of Fenghuang (Shaanxi) - a famous historic and cultural town in China - the methodology reveals a new reading and the potential underlying of Chinese settlements forms. Architectural and urban-rural design projects are not the colonisation of a void (a tabula rasa) but rather an understanding and interpretation of an existing text with its erasures and absences (tabula plena), which also presents the principles for future writings.

  • A Dialogue Between Architecture and Landscape: Pu

Tongji University Press A Dialogue Between Architecture and Landscape: Pu

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisChinese architect Pu Miao has long explored the development of modern Chinese architecture from a localised perspective. As he has learned from his practice, the integration of architecture and landscape promises to be one of the main directions for localisation. This volume selects 15 architectural designs from Miao’s practice since the 1990s; 12 of them have been constructed and written about in international and Chinese professional journals and books. The building types include restaurant, retail, exhibition, worship, residence, education, and public facilities. The projects illustrate four modes of integrating buildings and landscape: using outdoor spaces as alternatives for indoor activities; architecture and landscape each playing a unique role in a functional pair; architecture partially taking the form of landscape; and gardens as urban public spaces in a building. Through detailed analyses of design concepts, a large number of building photos and drawings (including wall sections for some projects), this book acts not only as a virtual tour of these places, but also provides meticulous design documentation. Today, it is very rare for an architect to practice by him/herself. Pu Miao has proved that such a traditional craftsman’s mode of practice is still possible; more than that, he inspires us to see that the modes of architectural practice need not to be as uniform as many believe. There are actually many possibilities, as long as you dare to imagine and to try. Perhaps Pu Miao’s initial objective was to control the building detailing as much as possible, which he has accomplished, but meanwhile he has also become a special banner of independent practice in China. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe traditions of paper architecture derive from French and Italian designs of the eighteenth century and avant-garde projects produced in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s. The latter were denounced at the time for their detachment from reality, practice, and ideology, which made them unsuitable for promoting the building of socialism In the early 1980s, a group of students at Moscow Architectural Institute found a way around the censor and began sending entries to Japanese ideas competitions. They immediately started winning. Yuri Avvakumov was one of the key figures in the paper architecture movement of the time and amassed a large collection of works by his friends and colleagues. As well as an introductory essay by Avvakumov, the book includes a selection of press cuttings, many of which are translated to English for the first time. Paper Architecture. Super Book House Romance of Red Stone: An Appreciation of Ornament

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is an appreciation of architecture of Islam in India. Indo-Islamic architecture is characterised by the prolific use of sandstone -- red stone. It is the culmination of the long tradition of Islamic art that came into bloom right from the faith''s first expansion beyond the Arabian Peninsula in the late seventh century. All the great Mughal emperors were prolific commissioners of monuments and their architecture thus remained the finest representation of this syncretion. Mughal architecture has been rich in ornament, almost at times overwhelming the architecture itself. With lively pictures, giving you a feeling of actually experiencing them, the book is divided into three major sections -- Islamic ornament, Common forms in Islamic ornament, and Mughal architecture. Indeed a tribute to the Islamic architecture in India. A musthave book for all who love Mughal architecture. The pictures present a feast of craftsmanship, as an enduring romance with shape and stone, in its unending variations. For a visitor to these buildings, the photographs allow a return, a recollection of architecture as a phenomenon, giving a sensual experience of the visit, a feel for the infinite craft. Mustansir Dalvi''s text complements Pitkar''s photographs by guiding the reader to an understanding of the variety and symbolism of ornamental forms that grace Islamic architecture, especially in the Indian context. Ornament in its many manifestations transforms the architecture, dematerializing immense monuments into elegant jewel-boxes. Dalvi shows how artisan and patron came together in India in a unique integration of two divergent world views and cultures to create a lasting syncretism of Islamic and Hindu traditions that reached its zenith in the architecture of the Mughal period.

Book SynopsisThe central idea behind this book is to gather knowledge and experiences about strategies and processes that are based on Universal Design philosophy and principles from three different fields: architecture, product design and from within information and communication technologies (ICT). The contents of this book examine a key question: What is meant by a Universal Design strategy and how can these approaches be developed, understood and practised within the different design disciplines? To examine this question, architects, educators, researchers, product designers, those working in professional design organisations and researchers from ICT were invited to reflect on their own thoughts and practices and to write about the design processes and principles they use to create Universal Design solutions. The book is aimed at a variety of audiences typically including postgraduate students in design and architecture, designers, architects, engineers and business leaders or managers who are working with Universal Design in some way.

Book SynopsisLucien Hervé (1910-2007) was one of the great architectural photographers of the 20th century. His methodological and conceptual patterns were reflected in his work, which includes a long collaboration with Le Corbusier. In 1958 he launched the project for a photobook on the monastery of El Escorial commissioned by the RM publishing house in Barcelona, and a year later, during a trip around Spain, a second commission on popular Mediterranean architecture arose. Although they remained unpublished, both works were the object of constant revision by the photographer throughout his life. Sixty years later, both photobooks are published, preceded by specialised texts by architects Javier Mosteiro and Marco Iuliano. The publication is completed by a volume in which Iñaki Bergera and art historian Horacio Fernández offer us an overview of the artist's life and investigate the relationship between these two projects. Aarhus University Press Catalyst Architecture

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book raises a discussion in regard to architecture''s role as a catalyst for urban development. Through studies of eight architectural projects in large cities on four different continents, the focus is placed on how architecture can promote the enriching experiences of the tolerant, the democratic, the learning and the experience rich city. In other words: The city worth living in, worth supporting and worth investing in. The projects operate with a mix of design programs, organised so that they invite diverse user groups to a variety of activities. Visual and other sensuous architectural effects frame the interaction between the projects and the human activities within their urban context -- an interaction that indicates a direction for a new narrative about the potential of place. The book is written for everybody with an interest in architecture and urban life in large cities and is a must-read for students of architecture, urban design, town planning, urban geography, urban sociology and aesthetic studies.

  • Performative Urban Design

Aarhus University Press Performative Urban Design

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book seeks to identify emerging trends in urban design as they are reflected in the city''s architecture and spatial design. A ''cultural grafting'' of the inner city is taking place, and urban development is pursuing an intense city life, in which architecture and art are playing a catalytic role. On the one hand, this development has focused on massive investments in ''corporate architecture''. On the other hand cities have invested heavily in new cultural centres and performative urban spaces that can fulfil a growing desire for entertainment and culture. The anthology Performative Urban Design addresses these issues through three lenses: Sense Architecture; Place Making; Urban Catalyst. The articles identify the relevant theoretical positions within architecture, art and urban strategies, and they demonstrate the concepts and methodological approaches drawn from practical experience.

    Silvana Luisa Lambri: Autoritratto

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLuisa Lambri’s art revolves around the human condition and its relationship with space, touching on areas such as the politics of representation, architecture, the history of abstract photography, modernism, feminism, identity and memory. The title of the exhibition presented at PAC, in Milan, is a tribute to Carla Lonzi who, in 1969, published “Autoritratto”, a collection of interviews with avant-garde artists that revealed their private sides. In the same way, Lambri constructs personal and intimate readings of the subjects of her photographs and encourages a dialogue between the observer, the work of art and the space. Light, time and movement play an important role in her work, where slight differences reflect the artist’s movement within the space. Lambri uses architecture to create her images, rather than images to document architecture, revealing negligible details of modernist architecture or iconic minimalist sculptures. At PAC, her works relate to the unique qualities of the architecture designed by Ignazio Gardella, for which the exhibition was specifically developed. Text in English and Italian.

    Skira Naked Architecture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNaked Architecture Valerio Paolo Mosco An account of one of the most interesting phenomena of contemporary architecture: the return to the structure and methods with which contemporary constructions are realized. Over the last ten years architecture would seem to have rediscovered engineering. Now that the Postmodern period, in which the structure of buildings was camouflaged by coverings of every kind, has passed, architecture today seems to have undressed, almost as though wishing to show how it is made (and to render this spectacular). On the other hand, the rediscovery in recent years of plastic form has brought about a closer relationship between architects and engineers. In the wake of the phenomenon that is the work of Santiago Calatrava, figures of engineer-architects have emerged such as Cecil Balmond, Sasaki and Guy Nordenson, who have been able to give a strongly "engineering-oriented" guise to ever more complex building sites. To this we must add the rise of new issues, such as that of environmental engineering, which has changed from being a specifically technical sphere to one of many other realms of knowledge, not least the aesthetic. If, therefore, there is a phenomenon today that is able to hold together the various expressions of contemporary architecture, it is precisely this return to the structure and methods with which it is realized.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, a number of protagonists of Italian modern architecture provide vivid dialogues – here taken to mean ‘the talking of the soul with itself’ – on how they perceive the interaction between idea, design and construction. Drawing on these personal views, Dialogues on Architecture explores the relationship that exists between the poetic and the technical-scientific spheres in architecture, underlining their complementary and conflictual natures. Dialogues on Architecture rejects the interpretation of architecture as orientated exclusively towards the end result and reconnects the previously interrupted narratives that follow a design from its conception to its completion. Featuring texts from Franco Albini, Lodovico B. di Belgiojoso, Guido Canella, Aurelio Cortesi, Roberto Gabetti & Aimaro Isola, Ignazio Gardella, Vittorio Gregotti, Vico Magistretti, Enrico Mantero, Paolo Portoghesi, Aldo Rossi, Giuseppe Terragni, and Vittoriano Viganò.
