Cambridge University Press Leaves from Three Ancient Qurans Possibly PreOthmanic
Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1914, this book contains a transcription of leaves from three Arabic Qurans, purchased in Egypt in 1895. Lewis and Mingana date the sections to pre-Othmanic Islam, and each reveal surprising variations in the original Quranic texts. This book, which was controversial at the time of its first publication, will be of value to anyone with an interest in early Quranic palimpsests and Islamic history.Table of ContentsLeaves from three ancient Qurans, possibly pre-'Othmanic, with a list of their variants.

Rowman & Littlefield Fables of the Ancients Folklore in the Quran
Book SynopsisThe scholarly identification of formulas and folktales in the Qur'an represents a novel approach to the world-famous religious text. Not only does it provide insight into the basic composition of this sacred document, but also pinpoints and makes accessible many of its principal themes.Trade ReviewAn acclaimed scholar-folklorist Dundes analyzes this ancient charter book [Qur'an] with precision and academic insight. Concise yet thorough, this work includes numerous references as well as an exceptional bibliography and index. Highly recommended. * Library Journal *Anyone who has ever had occasion to consult a concordance of the Qur'an will not have failed to notice the high degree to which phrases and sentences are repeated, often verbatim, throughout the holy text. Arguing that such repetitions are 'formulas,' and applying Milman Parry and Albert B. Lord's oral-formulaic theory to the Qur'an, Professor Alan Dundes has broken new ground with his folkloristic approach to that book. The issue will surely be debated for many years to come. -- James T. Book Synopsis We are pleased to announce the launch of the Journal of the International Qur'anic Studies Association (JIQSA). In support of the association’s mission of fostering scholarship on the Qur'an, the journal will publish twice annually. Articles will be rigorously peer-reviewed through a double-blind review process, with reviewers appointed by the Co-Editors and the international Editorial Board. The journal is being launched at a time of particular vitality and growth in Qur'anic Studies, and its primary goal is to encourage the further development of the discipline in innovative ways. Methodologies of particular interest to the journal include historical-critical, contextual-comparative, and literary approaches to the Qur'an. We welcome articles that explore the Qur'an’s origins in the religious, cultural, social, and political contexts of Late Antiquity; its connections to various literary precursors, especially the scriptural and parascriptural traditions of older religious communities; the historical reception of the Qur'an in the west; the hermeneutics and methodology of Qur'anic exegesis and translation (both traditional and modern); the transmission and evolution of the textus receptus and the manuscript tradition; and the application of various literary and philological modes of investigation into Qur'anic style and compositional structure.

Peeters Publishers Dionysius Bar Salibi: A Response to the Arabs
Book SynopsisDionysius bar Salibi's apologetic treatise, "A Response to the Arabs", is the longest and most comprehensive dispute text with Muslims that exists in Syriac. Its main purpose is to acquaint the reader with the essential facts pertaining to Islam and to provide apologetic arguments intended to refute the challenges of Islam to the Christian faith. What sets Bar Salibi's treatise apart from other Syriac dispute texts is the information it contains concerning the history and doctrinal development of Islam. The first two discourses deal with the prophet Muhammad, the emergence of Islam, the "Qurian", and the origins and characteristics of the main Islamic schools of thought. The central beliefs of the Christian faith are explained and defended. The third discourse (chapters 25-30) is made up of the most extensive collection of quotations from the "Qurian" translated into Syriac that exists in any known Syriac dispute text. A parallel column contains Bar Salibi's observations and refutations.
