Oneworld Publications The Fight for Beauty: Our Path to a Better Future
Book SynopsisWe live in a world where the drive for economic growth is crowding out everything that can’t be given a monetary value. We’re stuck on a treadmill where only the material things in life gain traction and it’s getting harder to find space for the things that really matter but money can’t buy, including our future. Fiona Reynolds proposes a solution that is at once radical and simple – to inspire us through the beauty of the world around us. Delving into our past, examining landscapes, nature, farming and urbanisation, she shows how ideas about beauty have arisen and evolved, been shaped by public policy, been knocked back and inched forward until they arrived lost in the economically-driven spirit of today. A passionate, polemical call to arms, The Fight for Beauty presents an alternative path forward: one that, if adopted, could take us all to a better future. Trade Review‘The Fight For Beauty is a remarkable book: passionate, persuasive and brave.’ -- Robert Macfarlane‘A passionately written clarion call to all who value the quality of beauty in their surroundings. It is a book which should be compulsory reading for all who hold environmental responsibilities in both local and national government.’ * Times Literary Supplement *‘Shines light on those inspired to try to reverse the damage done to wildlife and the landscape in the 19th century…Compelling…It was clearly intended to be an uncomfortable read – and it is.’ * Country Life *‘A book fizzing with ideas and passion…Full of stories of politicians and officials who made a difference for good, it shows that politics matters. I hope it will inspire today’s leaders to fight for beauty’. * The Countryman *‘[A] spirited defence of the British landscape’. * Apollo *‘Few people are better qualified to write the history of the century-old fight to protect the British countryside and point the way to its future than Fiona Reynolds’. * Countryfile Magazine *‘A fascinating story told by someone who has lived and worked at the heart of the struggle for more than 30 years... This deeply inspiring book needs to transform the government of Britain.’ -- Adam Nicolson, author of Sea Room‘Fiona Reynolds writes with clarity, wisdom and passion about a subject in which she has few if any peers. It is an important story in which she argues convincingly that, while Britain of course needs economic progress, the human spirit needs beauty every bit as much. At its heart, her book is a warning against thoughtless depredation authorised by policy-makers who ignore or dismiss this fundamental truth. Despite her forebodings, however, Reynolds is an optimist who believes that we will wake up before it is too late. If so, her masterly cri de coeur will prove to have been an invaluable inspiration.’ -- Jonathan Dimbleby

Atlantic Books Sylvan Cities: An Urban Tree Guide
Book Synopsis'Clever, pretty, fun and informative - what more can a reader ask for?' Sara Maitland, author of Gossip From the ForestWe're surrounded in cities by trees, quiet colossuses that most of us don't know by name. Does that matter? It's certainly possible to appreciate a tree for its beauty, its shade and its shelter without knowing whether it's an alder, an elder, a lime or a beech. But look harder, and we begin to see the beauty beneath the bark - the tales of how trees are integral to medicine and art as they are furniture and firewood; the stories of why wild figs grow on the banks of Sheffield's rivers and why the ash tree is touched with magic and mischief. As well as being an illustrated guide that will help you identify some of the species you see around town every day, Sylvan City is also a potted-journey through our cities' woody places and a literary hunt for where their wild things are.Inviting readers on an intricately illustrated journey into the urban forest, Sylvan City is both a practical guide to identifying twenty of the most common trees standing sentry on our street corners, and a lyrical, anecdotal treasure trove of facts and history, culture and leafy lore.Trade ReviewCharming...lovely...well-written...beautifully illustrated. * Gardens Illustrated *Dulce et utile. (I'm allowed the Latin for "both sweet and useful" here because the botanical science is as sound as the cultural, historical and poetic aspects.) This is a delightful book: clever, pretty, fun and informative - what more can a reader ask for? Even a committed rural dweller like me is impressed. Big thanks to Helen Babbs, who has solved a fair number of my 2019 Christmas present problems already. * Sara Maitland, author of Gossip From the Forest *Full of gems; a manifesto for green cities. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Planet Palm: How Palm Oil Ended Up in
Book SynopsisIt's in our instant noodles and chocolate bars, our lipsticks and fuel tanks. But what even is palm oil, and how has it come to dominate our lives so completely? Jocelyn C. Zuckerman travels across four continents and back two centuries to find answers about the most widely used vegetable oil on Earth. The little oil palm fruit has played an outsized role in world history and economic development. But the multi-billion-dollar palm oil business has been built on stolen land and slave labour; it spurred colonisation and swept away lives and cultures. Today, its fires and mass deforestation generate carbon emissions to rival those of entire industrialized nations, and they've pushed animals like the orangutan to the brink of extinction. Combining history, travelogue and investigative reporting, Planet Palm offers an unsettling, urgent look at a global industry that has become an environmental, public health, and human rights disaster.Trade Review‘Planet Palm will and should enrage you. […] Troubling, thoroughly researched and thrilling from beginning to end, [Jocelyn Zuckerman’s] book traverses four continents in a broad sweep of the history, power and politics behind palm oil.’'Planet Palm is an illuminating read, as engrossing as it is informative. Those who take some time with it will understand palm oil as a force of modern history and see just how much of the world map has been stained in red oil.' -- Mongabay

Studies in Photography Surveying the Anthropocene:: Environment and
Book SynopsisA thought-provoking combination of visually powerful imagery and comment *Includes 260 stunning photographs by more than 50 international contributors *Keynote essay by Patricia Macdonald *Features an interview with Dan Bailey and George Monbiot *Includes essays by Robert Macfarlane, Owen Logan, Kate Brown, Siobhan Lyons, Andrew Simms, Natasha Myers, Ayelen Liberona, Jared Diamond, Leslie Hook, Adam Nicolson Surveying the Anthropocene presents a range of approaches to image-making concerning the environment by some of the best artist-photographers working worldwide, alongside texts by some of the most illuminating writers on environmental questions, at a pivotal moment in the human relationship with the planet. Photographic approaches to environmental imagery have altered fundamentally in recent decades, largely as a result of increasing socio-ecological awareness. This insightful international survey, with a strong representation from Scotland, considers the varied range of current working practices of a representative selection of artist-photographers, both renowned and emerging, whose image-making explores human-caused environmental change. It concentrates particularly on work which relates to the types of impact, on climate and the web of life, that are sufficiently significant and globally widespread to appear in the future record of the rocks as a new geological epoch - the Anthropocene. The concept of the Anthropocene has engaged the attention and imagination of a wide range of commentators from very different backgrounds and walks of life. It therefore provides an excellent context in which to discuss, in an open and cross-disciplinary way, the range of responses of artist-photographers and cultural writers to our present global situation of multiple, interconnected environmental and social crises - and the options for human ingenuity in addressing these. University of Wales Press Return to My Trees: Notes from the Welsh
Book SynopsisWhen and how did we humans lose our connection with nature – and how do we find it again? Matthew Yeomans seeks to answer these questions as he walks more than 300 miles through the ancient and modern forests of Wales, losing himself in their stories (and on the odd unexpected diversion, too). Return to My Trees weaves together history and folklore with tales of industrial progress and decay. On his journey, he visits landmarks that once were home to ancient Druids, early Celtic saints, Norman Lords and the great mining communities that reshaped Wales. He becomes immersed in the woodlands that inspired the country’s great legends. At one point he even stumbles upon a herd of television-watching cows. As Yeomans walks, he reflects on these woods’ uncertain future, his own relationship with nature and the global problems we need to solve if humans are to truly make peace with the natural world. from tree-planting in ways that are actually beneficial to the environment and local communities to embedding the value of nature into our financial and economic systems. The result is a fascinating and funny adventure that offers insight into the past, present and future of Wales’s woodlands and shows what the rest of the world can learn from them.

University of Wales Press Shaping the Wild: Wisdom from a Welsh Hill Farm
Book SynopsisWhat can one Welsh hill farm tell us about how we can help nature to thrive? In recent times, farming has often been viewed as harmful to nature and the environment, causing friction between those wanting to protect wildlife and the farmers whose livelihoods depend on upon the land. Conservationists and governments frequently propose well-meaning ideas and policies to enable farming and conservation to work together, but all-too-often these do not have the intended results. At the heart of this is a lack of understanding about the realities of farming life and managing the land for nature. In this captivating debut, conservationist David Elias explores a farm in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and unpacks what it shows us about the gritty reality of trying to reconcile hill farming and caring for nature. Visiting through the seasons, he forms a deep relationship with the land and the people who work it, coming to understand their particular way of life, history and concerns about the future. It is also a farm rich in nature and he brings his experienced eye to how its habitats and wildlife have been shaped by changing farming practices over the generations. Through lyrical prose and first-hand conversations with farmers, Elias also shows what current government policies have achieved – or not achieved – and why it is so important for us to understand what it really takes ensure farming families remain on the land while simultaneously allowing nature to flourish.

Book SynopsisThis book is of interest to all of you willing to gain perspective both in time and in depth about the global environmental crises we are facing in the Anthropocene as well as pondering potential solutions. Humans are dominating the Earth’s environment and causing global changes in the most recent geologic time called the Anthropocene. Global changes are caused by both natural events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, or caused by humans like global warming and pollution of air, water, and soil. The author documents all types of global changes, beyond climate change, pointing out the risks for humanity when all these changes combine in time. Hans Nelson describes global changes while traveling through an earth scientist’s 60-year global journey. Throughout his memoirs, the author provides many humorous examples of adventures taking place during the scientific studies on land and at sea. He makes suggestions for a sustainable planet and shows that humans worldwide in the past, and can in the future, work together on solutions for global change problems. Springer International Publishing AG Bangladesh I: Climate Change Impacts, Mitigation
Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to provide information to scientists and local government to help them better understand the particularities of the local climate. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges to society. It can lead to serious impacts on production, life and environment on a global scale. Higher temperatures and sea level rise will cause flooding and water salinity problems which bring about negative effects on agriculture and high risks to industry and socio-economic systems in the future. Climate change leads to many changes in global development and security, especially energy, water, food, society, job, diplomacy, culture, economy and trade. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines climate change as: “Any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity.” Global climate change has emerged as a key issue in both political and economic arenas. It is an increasingly questioned phenomenon, and progressive national governments around the world have started taking action to respond to these environmental concerns.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Springer International Publishing AG Great Moments in the History of Life
Book SynopsisA non-technical (but serious) treatment of those parts of Earth history leading up to human history, as well as some pre-historical aspects of humanity. Many “events” in Earth’s history necessarily preceded the emergence of human beings (and intelligence). Geology has provided us with a great deal of information about these various steps on the way to intelligent life, and how and why they were important. Some of these events were on a cosmic scale (no universe – no life!), some were planetological/astronomical (no Earth – no life), some were essentially chemical (how did life emerge in the primordial ocean and why do we have oxygen in the atmosphere?), and some were details of evolutionary history (how did life colonize the land and how did mammals develop?). In this book an enthusiastic professor of geosciences presents a broad introduction from the Big Bang to the present and into the future, lucidly explaining aspects from various disciplines to interested, non-specialist readers.Trade Review“The book would be a wonderful resource for advanced undergraduates or for a graduate-level seminar, as each chapter focuses on a key question regarding life on Earth. … The index is brief; the few images are useful additions to the text. … Summing Up: Recommended. Berghof Foundation Operations gGmbH The Burning Question
Book SynopsisAndrew Gilmour has a deep understanding of global conflicts and in The Burning Question he draws on his personal knowledge gained from years of working in Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, the Middle East, West Africa, and the Balkans to explain how climate change contributes to the intensification of social and political conflict across the world. This is the first ever book-length treatment that analyses the nexus between conflict and climate change, and what can be done to mitigate the dangers. In his roles both at the UN and as the current head of the Berghof Foundation, Gilmour has been an outspoken advocate for human rights. In The Burning Question, he explores the role of public policy, community action, restoration ecology, and technological innovation in mitigating conflicts caused by climate change. RIBA Publishing Regenerative by Design
Book SynopsisHow do we design cities and buildings that metabolise, use living materials and are net positive - that give back more to the planet than they take? Our cities and buildings are a drain on the planet, requiring huge amounts of resources and tracts of land to support their needs, and destroying biodiversity in the process. The idea of living, regenerative buildings is gaining ground - buildings that give back more than they take, providing habitats, ecosystems services (e.g. clean water, clean air), locally-grown food, and putting humans back in touch with the natural world. The climate and biodiversity crisis has driven organisations to set ambitious net zero carbon and ESG targets: however, many are struggling to see how to achieve them and often doing the same thing, but expecting a different result. This book sets out the regenerative building agenda and design principles, showing how buildings, towns and cities could start to have a positive impact on our plane

RIBA Publishing Blueprints for the Soul
Book SynopsisYou know that something is wrong, even if you can't quite put your finger on it. This book tells you why, and how to solve it.There is a lack of beauty and emotion in our built environment. The visual patterns in nature that instinctively satisfy us are being obliterated from our surroundings, which have become progressively monolithic and featureless. We don't question why nature matters. We implicitly understand that nature feeds us metaphorically as well as literally. Nowhere was this more evident than in the lockdowns endured during the earlier stages of the Covid pandemic, where city dwellers became ever more desperate to leave the urban sprawl and get into the green. Human beings are highly attuned to the sensory inputs of the natural environment. On the large scale, we respond to the sight of a captivating view. On the small scale, our senses can come alive at the sight of richly painted flowers, the pungent green smell of freshly cut grass or the song of a blackbird.<

RIBA Publishing Postmodernism
Book SynopsisFirst published in 2017 as Revisiting Postmodernism, this refreshed edition of a seminal text reflects on a design movement that changed our world. Postmodernism invites readers to explore the style in a new light, as the cultural phenomenon that it is, one which thrives on complexity and pluralism. Exploring its expression not only in architecture, but in design, urban planning and placemaking, Postmodernism reflects on the history of the movement and its continuing influence on design practice today.Sir Terry Farrell and Adam Nathaniel Furman present two separate but complementary perspectives of this rich period of architectural history; one account as lived experience from a protagonist and pioneer in the field of postmodern architecture, and the other analysing the movement afresh, through the lens of the 21st century.Shedding new light onto the forces and influences of the time, and offering insight into how these were transforming approaches to architecture both

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Culture of Stopping
Book SynopsisOur culture has no concept of stopping. We continue to build motorways and airports for a future in which cars and planes may no longer exist. We’re converting our planet from a natural one to an artificial one in which the quantity of man-made objects – houses, asphalt, cars, plastic, computers and so on – now exceeds the totality of living matter. And while biomass continues to decline due to deforestation and species extinction, the mass of man-made objects is growing faster than ever. We’re on a treadmill to disaster. To get off this treadmill, argues Harald Welzer, we need to learn how to stop: as individuals and as societies, we need to stop doing what we’re doing and say ‘enough’. We find it hard to do this because our culture has trained us to regard endless escalation as desirable, and we’re reluctant to surrender the material benefits of growth. But as long as the expansive cultural model continues to prevail, there will be no change of course in favour of sustainable and climate-friendly practices and lifestyles. We need a cultural model in which the beauty of stopping is given the recognition needed for the project of civilization to continue. Optimizing processes that are heading in the wrong direction only makes matters worse. Stopping is imperative: it is a human cultural technique that we must re-learn. Only then can we achieve a new beginning.Trade Review‘Contemporary societies are shaped by relentless activity. Even though we know that their current trajectory is unsustainable, we no longer know how to stop and turn matters around. Harald Welzer tries to overcome the opposition between individual action and systemic change by showing how a culture of “stopping” emerges from personal experience and life-course events. This is an enabling book: it suggests that much more is often possible than continuation on a career path.’Peter Wagner, Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) and University of Barcelona‘I’d be amazed if there’s one person anywhere in the world who agreed with every single thing in this book, but that’s not the point. The point is this: here, unusually, is someone who really has something to say. His book rings of honesty and unpretentious disclosure. And Welzer is absolutely right: at this desperate moment in human history on this fragile planet, every single one of us needs to think with full seriousness about what we want our own legacy to be. What is your life going to have been for? What do we want to be remembered for? As blinkered narcissists? Or as practical people who dared to dream, who chose not to desecrate their descendants and who were determined to find joy and love in the gloriously quotidian process of our grand little lives? This is the question that Welzer poses unflinchingly to every reader. Don’t read this book if you are not ready to look into the mirror.’Rupert Read, Co-editor of Deep Adaptation and author of Parents for a Future: How Loving Our Children Can Prevent Climate Collapse‘insightful, original, strangely entertaining and unexpectedly personal’The Earthbound Report‘A fascinating, challenging book’Operation NoahTable of ContentsAcknowledgements List of Illustrations I Away from here II Narratives of stopping, and of life III Obituary to the rest of my life IV An immense journey Notes Index

Taylor & Francis Inc The High Cost of Free Parking: Updated Edition
Book SynopsisOne of the American Planning Association’s most popular and influential books is finally in paperback, with a new preface from the author on how thinking about parking has changed since this book was first published. In this no-holds-barred treatise, Donald Shoup argues that free parking has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. Shoup proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking – namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking. Such measures, according to the Yale-trained economist and UCLA planning professor, will make parking easier and driving less necessary. Join the swelling ranks of Shoupistas by picking up this book today. You'll never look at a parking spot the same way again.Trade ReviewDonald Shoup is like Jane Jacobs. He starts by exposing the blind spot of a generation and then marshals a new generation of urbanists to make things right. Oxford University Press Anthropocene
Book SynopsisClimate scientists, geologists, ecologists, and archaeologists recognize the profound effects of human activity on Earth, though whether and how this should be recognized as a formal geological epoch - the Anthropocene - remains under debate, Erle Ellis describes how the Anthropocene concept is affecting the sciences, humanities, and politics.Trade ReviewIn this Very Short Introduction, Professor Ellis illustrates the issues of establishing a new epoch beautifully and also gives an excellent history of the Anthropocene's development as an idea. * Jonathan Scafidi, Geoscientist *This little book provides a refreshing read ... Every geography teacher would benefit from reading this short introduction, not least for the powerful knowledge it lends for understanding human relations with, and actions on, the environment. * Duncan Hawley, Geography Magazine *[an] excellent, concise and foundational book * Jim Richardson, Eyes on Earth *Ellis provides us with an authoritative introduction to the Anthropocene ... a fascinating and erudite book" * Leslie Sklair, LSE Review of Books *An easy-to understand new release offers a compact introduction to the age of man * Tanja Traxler, Der Standard *Anthropocene: A Very Short Introduction provides an exceptionally well-organized, sufficiently detailed, and encompassing overview of why the Anthropocene should be clearly recognized, in some form, as an unprecedented time in Earth history ... My initial reaction after reading Ellis's contribution was to think about just how enlightened our world would be if everyone would read this book. * John Geissman, Reports of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) *an interesting, succinct and concerning exposé that explains both the controversy and the science of the Anthropocene. * GrrlScientist for Medium *An excellent in"roduction to this still controversial concept * David Lorimer, Paradigm Explorer *Ellis offers an insightful discussion of our role in shaping the planet, and how this will influence our future on many fronts. * Michael Svoboda, Yale Climate Connections *This is a welcome addition to the Very Short Introductions series and would be a cheap, useful addition as a reference work to anyone concerned as to how we are transforming our world. * Jonathan Cowie, Science Fact & Science Fiction Concatenation *Ellis's slim book does an excellent job of cutting through the complexity [of the topic]. He has produced an impressive overview of the Anthropocene concept as both a scientific and cultural discussion ... Overall the book is fair, comprehensive, and clearly written. * Nicole E. Springer International Publishing AG Handbook of Climate Change and Biodiversity
Book SynopsisThis book comprehensively describes essential research and projects on climate change and biodiversity. Moreover, it includes contributions on how to promote the climate agenda and biodiversity conservation at the local level. Climate change as a whole and global warming in particular are known to have a negative impact on biodiversity in three main ways. Firstly, increases in temperatures are detrimental to a number of organisms, especially those in sensitive habitats such as coral reefs and rainforests. Secondly, the pressures posed by a changing climate may lead to sets of responses in areas as varied as phenology, range and physiology of living organisms, often leading to changes in their lifecycles (especially but not only in reproduction), losses in productivity or even death. In some cases, the very survival of very sensitive species may be endangered. Thirdly, the impacts of climate change on biodiversity will be felt in the short term with regard to some species and ecosystems, but also in the medium and long term in many biomes. Indeed, if left unchecked, some of these impacts may be irreversible. Many individual governments, financial institutes and international donors are currently spending billions of dollars on projects addressing climate change and biodiversity, but with little coordination. Quite often, the emphasis is on adaptation efforts, with little emphasis on the connections between physio-ecological changes and the lifecycles and metabolisms of fauna and flora, or the influence of poor governance on biodiversity. As such, there is a recognized need to not only better understand the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, but to also identify, test and implement measures aimed at managing the many risks that climate change poses to fauna, flora and micro-organisms. In particular, the question of how to restore and protect ecosystems from the impact of climate change also has to be urgently addressed. This book was written to address this need. The respective papers explore matters related to the use of an ecosystem-based approach to increase local adaptation capacity, consider the significance of a protected areas network in preserving biodiversity in a changing northern European climate, and assess the impacts of climate change on specific species, including wild terrestrial animals. The book also presents a variety of case studies such as the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, the effects of climate change on the biodiversity of Aleppo pine forest in Senalba (Algeria), climate change and biodiversity response in the Niger Delta region, and the effects of forest fires on the biodiversity and the soil characteristics of tropical peatlands in Indonesia. This is a truly interdisciplinary publication, and will benefit all scholars, social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies engaged in research and/or executing projects on climate change and biodiversity around the world.Table of ContentsWater Management and Climate Change in the Focus of International Master Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean.- Mangrove Conservation Policies in the Gulf of Guayaquil.- Biodiversity Issues Should be Better Taken into Account in the Energy Transition.- Approaches to Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity Assessment in Belarus.- Community Action for Biodiversity and Forest Conservation and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Wild Coffee Forests (CAFA).- Impact of Climate Change on Sawfly (Suborder: Symphyta) Polinators in Andalusia Region, Spain.- Coffee, Climate and Biodiversity: Understanding the Carbon Stocks of the Shade Coffee Production System of India.- Implications for Biodiversity of Potentially Committed Global Climate Change (from Science and Policy).- Ensuring Co-Benefits for Biodiversity, Climate Change and Sustainable Development.- Sustainable Hydropower: using Ecosystem-based Adaptation to increase local Adaptation Capacity in Brazil.- The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative as an Adaptive Response to Climate Change.- Saving the Last Endemic-Church Forests in Ethiopia: The Case of Lake Tana Biosphere Reserve.- Factors Affecting Communication and Information Sharing for Water Resource Management in Lake Victoria Basin (LVB).- Climate Sentinels Research Program: Developing Indicators of the Effects of Climate Change on Biodiversity in the Region of New Aquitaine (South West, France).- Introducing Spatio-Temporal Conservation Units: Models for Flexible Optimization of Species Persistence under Climate Change.- The Impact of Climate Change and Variability on Wild Terrestrial Animals in Selected Rural Coastal Regions of Kenya.- Biodiversity Risks for Belarus Connected with the UV Climate Change.- The Impact of Forest Fire on the Biodiversity and the Soil Charactersitics of Tropical Peatland.- Promoting Climate Agenda and Biodiversity Conservation at the Local Level: A Case for Nepal’s Rural and Urban Municipalities.

Taylor & Francis Designing Landscape Architectural Education
Book SynopsisNo single project or endeavour is immune to the issues that the climate crisis brings. The climate crisis encompasses a broad register of symptoms â increased global temperatures and sea-level rise, droughts and extreme bushfire events, salinification and desertification of fertile land, and the list goes on. It reveals and amplifies complex causal relationships that are inherently present and traverse scales, sectors and communities divulging a range of impacts and inequalities. This publication asks designers and academic practitioners to describe their own work through an ecological lens, and then to articulate design approaches for developing new practices in landscape architecture teaching.Designing Landscape Architectural Education: Studio Ecologies for Unpredictable Futures, the Landscape Architecture Design Studio Companion, serves as a resource for academic practitioners in the preparation and delivery of design-research studios and students seeking guidanceTrade Review"Where has this collection been? The provocative voices gathered here offer both comprehensive and timely strategies for landscape architectural education yet to be presented together.Expansive yet precise, the authors—who represent a variety of disciplines and fields— deftly entangle intellectual frameworks with innovative studio pedagogies that engage the challenges and opportunities of the climate crisis. This body of design studio research will surely catalyze new modes of action by both academics and professionals that focus on making a just and healthy world, not simply saving it."Julia Czerniak, Professor of Architecture, Syracuse University; Creative Director, CLEAR RLA ASLA"This book is a milestone in the world of landscape architecture education. Our planet is experiencing rapid change, and scant lessons can actually be gleaned from history at this stage. The question is rather how to direct studio teaching towards the unknown in a decisive and proactive way. With a broad array of experts in ecology, plant physiology, materials, sensing and digital processes, this reader offers design solace in an unforeseeable age."Christophe Girot, Professor of Landscape Architecture, ETH Univeristy Zurich"At this fluid moment when we are contemplating the future of education in landscape architecture, this collection provides a rich and provocative field of approaches on which to draw. While apparently anachronistic in the 21st Century research university, studios are represented in their flexible ability to address complex issues across geography and society. We need this collective reflection to shore up our commitment to the studio form as well as to explore tomorrow’s problems."Professor Elizabeth Mossop, Dean, Faculty of Design Architecture and Building, University of Technology Sydney"This rigorously organized yet wonderfully diverse book is a resource for academic practitioners in creating new design studio pedagogies to address the symptoms and systems of the climate crisis and an unpredictable future. For students, it reveals insight into potential learning tools and methodologies. Thirty-three contributions are organized around five ‘threads’ of inquiry, which build an ethical momentum underpinned by new values."Alex Wall, Design Critic in Landscape Architecture, Graduate School of Design, Harvard UniversityTable of ContentsForewordCharles WaldheimPrefaceRosalea Monacella and Bridget KeaneStudio EcologiesRosalea Monacella and Bridget KeanePart 1: Material Ecologies1. PM Press Abolishing Fossil Fuels
Book SynopsisClimate destruction is a problem of political power. We have the resources for a green transition, but how can we neutralize the influence of Exxon and Shell? Abolishing Fossil Fuels argues that the climate movement has started to turn the tide against fossil fuels, just too gradually. The movement’s partial victories show us how the industry can be further undermined and eventually abolished. Activists have been most successful when they’ve targeted the industry’s enablers: the banks, insurers, and big investors that finance its operations, the companies and universities that purchase fossil fuels, and the regulators and judges who make life-and-death rulings about pipelines, power plants, and drilling sites. This approach has jeopardized investor confidence in fossil fuels, leading the industry to lash out in increasingly desperate ways. The fossil fuel industry’s financi

Oxford University Press The Plough that Broke the Steppes Agriculture And Environment On Russias Grasslands 17001914 Oxford Studies In Modern European History
Book SynopsisThis is the first environmental history of Russia''s steppes. From the early-eighteenth century, settlers moved to the semi-arid but fertile grasslands from wetter, forested regions in central and northern Russia and Ukraine, and from central Europe. By the late-nineteenth century, they had turned the steppes into the bread basket of the Russian Empire and parts of Europe. But there was another side to this story. The steppe region was hit by recurring droughts, winds from the east whipped up dust storms, the fertile black earth suffered severe erosion, crops failed, and in the worst years there was famine. David Moon analyses how naturalists and scientists came to understand the steppe environment, including the origins of the fertile black earth. He also analyses how scientists tried to understand environmental change, including climate change. Farmers, and the scientists who advised them, tried different ways to deal with the recurring droughts: planting trees, irrigation, and cultivating the soil. More sustainable, however, were techniques of cultivation to retain scarce moisture in the soil. Among the pioneers were Mennonite settlers. Such approaches aimed to work with the environment, rather than trying to change it by planting trees or supplying more water artificially. The story is similar to the Dust Bowl on the Great Plains of the USA, which share a similar environment and environmental history. David Moon places the story of the steppes in the wider context of the environmental history of European colonialism around the globe.Trade ReviewRare is the book that casts Russian history in an almost wholly new light. * Financial Times 2013 Books of the Year *Moon's book is an extremely important contribution to Russian and environmental histories, and can be used in advanced undergraduate as well as graduate courses. * Mark Bernard Tauger, American Historical Review *With this book, David Moon contributes significantly to the environmental history of the Russian and Soviet empires ... The book is thoroughly supported by extensive archival, journal and other research. I recommend it for students of European history, environmental history, Russian history and agricultural history. * Paul Josephson, European History Quarterly *The Plough That Broke the Steppes is an important contribution to the global history of grassland ... Moon's work is both immensely readable and scholarly with a broad historical sweep and interdisciplinary scope. He brings life to scholarly, scientific, and practical agricultural debates on the steppes * Elizabeth Walden, Environmental History *This stimulating book is the first environmental history of the Russian steppe, a flat plain that stretches from Western Russia to Mongolia, north of the Black and Caspian Seas ... Recommended. * N.M. Brooks, CHOICE *In this impressively researched and compellingly argued book, David Moon elevates this problem of what to do with the fertile yet fragile belt of grasslands in Russia's south to one of the enduring 'cursed questions' of the country's history ... Throughout the book Moon evokes his personal experiences on the steppe. These environmental encounters clearly aided his historical thinking and provide vivid examples for the reader. Coming to know the grasslands themselves helped him write this insightful and lasting contribution to environmental and imperial Russian history. * Andy Bruno, History *In the context of current discussions on the causes of climate change and the search for sustainable forms of agriculture, this work is a credit. * Katja Bruisch, Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas *yet another wonderful and ground-breaking book from David Moon ... Throughout, Moon retains a moderate and scientific tone. * Christopher Read, English Historical Review *Table of ContentsPART I: UNDERSTANDING THE STEPPE ENVIRONMENT; PART II: UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE; PART III: COMBATING THE STEPPE ENVIRONMENT?

Oxford University Press Is the Planet Full
Book SynopsisWhat are the impacts of population growth? Can our planet support the demands of the ten billion people anticipated to be the world''s population by the middle of this century? While it is common to hear about the problems of overpopulation, might there be unexplored benefits of increasing numbers of people in the world? How can we both consider and harness the potential benefits brought by a healthier, wealthier and larger population? May more people mean more scientists to discover how our world works, more inventors and thinkers to help solve the world''s problems, more skilled people to put these ideas into practice? In this book, leading academics with a wide range of expertise in demography, philosophy, biology, climate science, economics and environmental sustainability explore the contexts, costs and benefits of a burgeoning population on our economic, social and environmental systems.Trade ReviewIts [the book's] strengths lie in collecting together the diverse opinions of different thought leaders to provide a holistic interdisciplinary discourse around how we treat the planet and each other.
