  • Taylor & Francis Housing Design Quality

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book directly addresses the major planning debate of our time - the delivery and quality of new housing development. As pressure for new housing development in England increases, a widespread desire to improve the design of the resulting residential environments becomes evermore apparent with increasing condemnation of the standard products of the volume housebuilders. In recent years central government has come to accept the need to deliver higher quality living environments, and the important role of the planning system in helping to raise design standards. Housing Design Quality focuses on this role and in particular on how the various policy instruments available to public authorities can be used in a positive manner to deliver higher quality residential developments.Table of ContentsPart 1: The Context for Delivering Quality 1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Structural Design for Architects

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst Published in 2017. An architect is not usually responsible for producing detailed structural calculations and drawings, unless the building concerned is very small and simple. Where the architect can be most effective in the field of structural design is in the clarity of the manner in which suggested solutions, in the form of schematic designs, are put to a structural engineer. It is vital that an architect can propose forms from which the structural engineer need not deviate, to the extent that the original design concept is violated. It is also important that he or she is able to make an informed and rational choice between apparently unrelated structural systems. The theme of this book therefore arises from the necessity for an architect to possess an extensive structural vocabulary, based on a clear understanding of the relevant underlying principles. Although written mainly for practising architects, it is hoped that the book will also provide a fresh perspective on the subTable of ContentsIntroduction 1 Physics and Mathematics in Architecture 2 Materials and Form 3 Behaviour of Basic Structural Elements 4 Beam and Truss Systems 5 Portal Frames and Arches 6 Suspension and Cable-Stayed Systems 7 Cantilevered and Continuous Beams 8 Circular and Square Plan Forms

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Evaluating British Urban Policy Ideology Conflict

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the Conservative government of the late 70s introduced its stringent spending policy, a ''value for money'' ideology has dictated most new approaches to policy management. As a result, monitoring and evaluation have become an integral part in the policy process. Focusing on the experience of British Urban Policy, this book examines the theoretical and practical issues in the monitoring or evaluation of public policy. It argues that as a result of the ''value for money'' ideology influencing urban policy in Britain, various conflicts have arisen in both policy and implementation, and compromises have had to be made. By exploring the experiences of monitoring and evaluating urban policy, the book examines key issues such as changing approaches, the interface between monitoring and evaluation, and the utilization of monitoring information and evaluation studies. It concludes that a long-term evaluation strategy is required in order to improve the utility value of evaluation studTrade Review'It draws on evidence from the City Challenge programme to make valuable wider suggestions about the nature of monitoring and evaluation. It has important messages both for policy makers in central government and for local partnerships involved in regeneration on the ground. Given the government's renewed aim to regenerate cities that was spelled out in the Urban White Paper, this is a book that will prove both timely and important.' Professor Brian Robson, Manchester University, UKTable of ContentsContents: Introduction. Part I: Monitoring and Evaluation: A Review of Three Decades: Evaluation of urban policy; The development of output and performance monitoring. Part II: Monitoring and Evaluation in Practice: Monitoring and evaluation - government approach; Monitoring and evaluation - local practice; Local experience - Bradford City challenge; Local experience - Hulme City challenge; Perceptions and reality - a comparison of views between partnerships and the government; Conclusions; Bibliography; Index.

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Household Waste in Social Perspective Values

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe principal barrier to the introduction of more sustainable disposal methods has previously been thought to be the lack of both available knowledge and an awareness of the benefits and ease of these systems. Illustrated by an in-depth analysis of waste reduction, reuse and recycling behaviour in Exeter, Devon, this volume questions these assumptions. It not only provides a fresh examination of the previous (mainly US-focused) research into the underlying determinants of waste management behaviour from a geographical perspective, but also develops a new theoretical model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. Linking three broad categories: environmental values, situational characteristics and psychological factors, the book provides a timely evaluation of research on household waste management, develops an original analytical model and demonstrates the utility and importance of focusing on individual attitudes.Trade Review’This book is essential reading for anyone involved in or interested about local sustainability, particularly the management of municipal solid waste. It comprises a thorough exploration of how people make choices in their use of the environment, and breaks new ground in our understanding of environmental citizenship. It provides new insights into how people might be encouraged to do their bit to make their households and communities more sustainable places.’ Professor Paul Selman, University of Gloucestershire, UKTable of ContentsContents: Introduction: the waste problem in social perspective; The social-psychological perspective I: environmental values and attitudes; The social - psychological perspective II: structure and situation; The social-psychological perspective III: psychological influences; Social psychological models of waste behaviour: conceptualizing action; The Exeter study I: data collection and description; The Exeter study II: multivariate analyses; A framework for advancing theory and policy?; Conclusion: household waste in social perspective; Bibliography.

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Taking Space Seriously Law Space and Society in

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis perceptive study investigates the different ways in which the state deals with various social groups through the mechanisms of space. By means of case studies involving three social groups within Israel''s multicultural society - the Sephardim, the Bedouin-Arab minority and the ultra-Orthodox community of Jerusalem - the different roles played by political space in legal analysis are revealed and analyzed. Issachar Rosen-Zvi then unearths the unifying logic underlying the disparate legal treatment of political space, brought to light by the case studies. The law treats political space differently depending on the social group involved, an attitude that, the author argues, can be traced back to early Zionist thinking. He concludes that a reform of local government law is required, to correct the segregated system of political space and the separate and unequal distribution of political power and economic resources that accompany it.Trade Review'This is an insightful and original study of the way in which politics, culture, and tradition, have molded the legal and political definitions of space within Israeli society. It's techniques and methods are rich in implications, that go far beyond the confines of the case-studies which form the body of the book. The book will be of great value to scholars who are interested in the politics of Israel, and also to those who are concerned more generally with the relationship between a legal system and the society in which it is located.' Professor Lawrence M. Friedman, Stanford University, Stanford California, USA 'This is a subtle, thoughtful and original treatment of how Israeli law has dealt with social group conflicts and hierarchies in the context of land use and political jurisdiction - an impressive study in the new interdisciplinary field of law and geography.' Professor Thomas C. Grey, Stanford Law School, USA '...highly original, penetrating and stimulating analysis of Israeli experience.' The Law and Politics Book Review '...illustrates how the space concept is used by different social groups to increase or consolidate their political and economic power.' International Journal of Environment and PollutionTable of ContentsContents: Introduction; Invisible spaces: the case of the Arab-Jews; The re-emergence of space: the case of the Bedouin; Spaces of ambivalence: the case of the ultra-orthodox; Spaces of identity: Zionist ideology and the social production of political space; Toward a reform of local government law; Epilogue; Bibliography; Index.
