Goose Lane Editions Earthkeeping: Love Notes for Tough Times

Book SynopsisThe author of Alder Music, Gary Saunders returns with an evocative, lyrical, and immersive collection of personal essays on our relationship with nature and with each other. In nine sections, Earthkeeping ruminates on the necessity of love and earthkeeping, on forage fish and robinsongs, and on the stewardship of our ecological landscape. Offering an antidote to the world’s anxiety about climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss, Saunders writes with a deep connection to the natural world and his signature humane zest for life. Lovingly illustrated with Saunders’s own drawings, the result is a joyful, personal, and deeply attentive stroll through an enchanted land of blue and green.Trade Review“The essays in Earthkeeping by naturalist-painter-writer Gary Saunders sum up his rich life in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia from the days of poverty-tinged fly-tying to the cod moratorium, as well as the seal glut, bumblebees and hornets, rural houses and characters, and the unparalleled close-up observation of a dragonfly eating a moosefly. The depth and cumulative value of these essays lies in Saunders’s habit of skilled and repetitive observation. A prophetic afterword echoes his hope for earth’s continuance as a sanctuary for life. This is a book for all of us, how we have lived and where we are going.” -- Annie Proulx, author of Barskins“Secretly we cherish “a moment when Nature’s beauty first smote us.” Gary Saunders reflects upon and investigates his relationship with the natural world, guiding himself to preserve his spiritual and conscious relationship with the world around him while still articulating his own irresponsibilities. Not without warnings, Earthkeeping reveals a kind wisdom and poet’s eye that I revelled in.” -- Boyd Chubbs, author of The Electric City“In Earthkeeping: Love Notes for Tough Times, writer Gary Saunders offers up a series of essays designed as a balm for the general ecological anxiety that is building in most of us, in step with the climate crisis. Saunders’ voice is wary but not panicked. With curiosity, care and humour he tackles the small stories — of roadside flowers, attempted turtle rescues and the merits (or lack thereof) of growing cattle corn — and although the collection creates an ethos for a way of thinking and feeling about the larger world.” -- Erica Butler * Atlantic Books Today *

Caitlin Press Finding Heartstone: A Taste of Wilderness

Book SynopsisWith tenderness and affection, Finding Heartstone captures the psychological, physical, and emotional impact of wilderness living and family tragedy. When Cathy Sosnowsky, her husband Woldy, and their little boy Alex first joined the Hemming Bay Community, a cooperative formed to preserve a large piece of wilderness on a remote coastal island of British Columbia, she found the idea of owning part of an island appealing. But the paradise she envisioned reveals itself as a harsh and hostile environment -- the water too cold to swim, the beaches rocky and jagged. After increasing her family with the adoption of two children, and the building of a communal lodge, Cathy began to recognize the joys a wild environment offers. But when their lives take a tragic turn with the loss of their son Alex to a fatal accident and his siblings to addiction, the couple begins to drift apart. Determined to find a way through the anguish and alienation, Woldy finds his recipe for healing by building Heartstone Lodge with his brother Vic, while Cathy pursues a healing journey through her writing. Ironically, the writing becomes her link to Heartstone Lodge, drawing her back to the support of the community and the wilderness she shared with her children. Through anecdotes of living in nature and the stories of the people and animals of Hemming Bay, a different type of family emerges and Cathy reflects on the imposing presence of those who have departed, some by way of death. After their son Michael returns from eight years in a Chinese jail with a longing for Hemming Bay fish and chips, their family begins to rebuild, re-establishing their tradition of sharing meals as a reminder of summer days spent in the wild. With quiet strength and conviction, Cathy confronts her emotions and reflects on the healing power of nature in this tender memoir.

Book SynopsisContemporary construction practice presents a shift in emphasis from thinking about the design team in isolation, to considering the project team as a collaborative whole: client, design team, and contractor. This approach requires greater consideration of how the project team is procured and assembled – and Assembling a Collaborative Project Team provides a range of in-depth and invaluable methods for ensuring that this essential task is carried out effectively. It will bring a range of benefits to any project – from facilitating BIM-ready teams, to better construction programming, and reducing risk through ensuring a watertight contractual framework. Many of the methods presented here are likely to become ingrained in the way all projects are coordinated. It shows that the best way of assembling a collaborative team is by establishing the team at the outset in manner that ensures that each party is fully aware of what they need to do and when, and by agreeing how this will be achieved.Table of ContentsAssembling a Collaborative Project Team

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAdrift on the Ark is a collection of personal essays by Margaret Thompson that offers a straightforward study of the complex relationship between human beings and the natural world. The essays look at a wide range of beings--from spiders to peacocks--and cover issues such as our irrational phobias, our fascination with zoos, and the myths and stories we have created around the other occupants of this earth. They also observe the joy animals bring to us as our pets and the altruistic relationship between caregivers and companions. With lively anecdotes and engaging portraits of the animals who have enriched Margaret''s life, these entertaining and personal essays serve a double purpose: as a reminder of our place in the natural order and our intricate connections with animals; and as a warning about how much we stand to lose by ignoring our responsibilities for all life on earth. Meant to inspire and motivate, Adrift on the Ark is an enchanting reflection on the beneficial relationship between humans and other animals.

Academic Foundation Eco-Imperialism: Green Power, Black Death

Book SynopsisThis book should have been written years ago. It reveals a dark secret of the ideological environmental movement. The movement imposes the views of mostly wealthy, comfortable Americans and Europeans on mostly poor, desperate Africans, Asians and Latin Americans. It violates these people's most basic human rights, denying them economic opportunities, the chance for better lives, the right to rid their countries of diseases that were vanquished long ago in Europe and the United States. Even worse, in league with the European Union, United Nations and other bureaucrats, the movement stifles vigorous, responsible debate over energy, pesticides, biotechnology and trade. It prevents needy nations from using the very technologies that developed countries employed to become rich, comfortable and free of disease. And as a consequence, it sends millions of infants, children, men and women to early graves every year. The ideological environmental movement is a powerful $4-billion-a-year US industry, an $8-billion-a-year international gorilla. Many of its members are intensely eco-centric, and seem to believe that wildlife and ecological values are more important than human progress or even human life.

  • How to Save Our World: The Ultimate Spiritual

Aspekt B.V., Uitgeverij How to Save Our World: The Ultimate Spiritual

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisMany books have been written about how we might save life on Earth. Some people believe that saving the Earth will cost 125 billion dollars while others claim that 1000 billion dollars will not be enough to achieve that goal. The solution as described in this book will not cost a penny! Indeed, all people will get the possibility for enlarging inner wisdom and material welfare. Forming a better future requires a different way of thinking, a different way of living together. That is the message of this book. On scrutinising the history of the world, one may discover a number of remarkable issues which are typical for human development. It determines the state of affairs in our present society and reveals a number of serious problems putting our entire world at risk. This situation is giving rise to a number of possible future scenarios which do not seem to be all that bright and shining. Are we going to let this happen? Does mankind want to evolve like plants and animals or do we want to show that we are intelligent creatures determined to shape our own future? Look at the positive developments in our current society and look at the results a spiritual society may offer. The spiritual society may provide different objectives and principles and might genuinely solve problems. Thus, it might be a world of love in which people strive to be in balance with our planet as well as with the universe. This ideal future might become a real world in which the term ''together'' refers to warm human values instead of purely economic ones. Your future, our world?

Book SynopsisREIMAGINING A CLEANER, GREENER, CARBON-FREE WORLD! The current global energy use, with its overwhelming dependence on fossil fuels, has taken global warming to dangerous levels. Climate change is already hitting us hard, through adverse effects on global food availability, biodiversity, rising sea levels and extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and floods. In the last decade, a major transformation the transition to clean, affordable and sustainable energy from the sun and the wind is beginning to address these challenges. Fossil Free provides a concise introduction to the challenges, realities and complexities of the global and local energy industry, as well as the trends and forces driving the energy transition. It explains how improved electricity infrastructure, decentralized smart grids, electric vehicles, energy storage and market design are already providing clear pathways for the transition towards green, efficient, affordable and secure renewable energy across the energy-use chain: extraction, conversion, transmission, distribution and end use. For over a decade, Sumant Sinha has had a ringside view of the energy scenario. Having founded and helmed India''s leading clean energy company, his understanding of the global energy landscape and climate change brings a unique, holistic perspective on energy. With Fossil Free, Sinha shares his vision for energy which is not only clean, but also practical and affordable.

Book SynopsisThe book makes a systematic attempt to explore the environmental history of Darjeeling during the British colonial period (1835-1947), which profoundly transformed the environment of Darjeeling by introducing commercial control over the natural resources. After the foundation of Darjeeling as the hill station for the low-income groups of British administration living in Bengal and Burma, the place was transformed into a social, recreational and commercial centre for the British authorities. The railway construction boom, introduction of tea plantation, the growth of a commercial market for timber and increasing demands for fuel and building materials depleted the forest cover. The less explored regions of Darjeeling attracted the adventure-thirsty Britons. A series of investigations were made on the marketable products, the condition of roads, and quality of soil of these regions. The ethnographic, geological, botanical and zoological study of the Darjeeling was started by the colonial officials in the nineteenth century.

  • Oxford University Press Humans versus Nature

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the appearance of Homo sapiens on the planet hundreds of thousands of years ago, human beings have sought to exploit their environments, extracting as many resources as their technological ingenuity has allowed. As technologies have advanced in recent centuries, that impulse has remained largely unchecked, exponentially accelerating the human impact on the environment. Humans versus Nature tells a history of the global environment from the Stone Age to the present, emphasizing the adversarial relationship between the human and natural worlds. Nature is cast as an active protagonist, rather than a mere backdrop or victim of human malfeasance. Daniel R. Headrick shows how environmental changes--epidemics, climate shocks, and volcanic eruptions--have molded human societies and cultures, sometimes overwhelming them. At the same time, he traces the history of anthropogenic changes in the environment--species extinctions, global warming, deforestation, and resource depletion--back to the age of hunters and gatherers and the first farmers and herders. He shows how human interventions such as irrigation systems, over-fishing, and the Industrial Revolution have in turn harmed the very societies that initiated them. Throughout, Headrick examines how human-driven environmental changes are interwoven with larger global systems, dramatically reshaping the complex relationship between people and the natural world. In doing so, he roots the current environmental crisis in the deep past.Trade ReviewThose of us who teach world environmental history will find this a nearly essential textbook, yet the work is valuable to anyone teaching world history. It may allow whole new environmental units to be placed easily into an existing course framework. At the very least, practitioners can consult chapters to incorporate specific examples or ideas more fully into their surveys. In the end, Headrick's work is the best textbook on global environmental history to date. * Thomas Anderson, World History Connected *...the ultimate reference work on global environmental history. * Eric L. Jones, University of Buckingham, EH.net *Headrick's book is the most comprehensive global environmental history in existence. It synthesizes vast knowledge from several scholarly disciplines into a coherent story of the 300,000-year human adventure on -- and with -- Earth. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, John Gatta argues that the religious import of American environmental literature has yet to be fully recognized or understood. Making Nature Sacred explores how the quest for ''natural revelation'' has been pursued through successive phases of American literary and intellectual history. It shows how the imaginative challenge of ''reading'' landscapes has been influenced by biblical hermeneutics. Though focused on adaptations of Judeo-Christian religious traditions, it also samples Native American, African American, and Buddhist forms of ecospirituality. It begins with Colonial New England writers such as Anne Bradstreet and Jonathan Edwards, re-examines pivotal figures such as Henry Thoreau and John Muir, and takes account of writings by Mary Austin, Rachel Carson, and many others along the way. The book concludes with an assessment of the spiritual renaissance underway in current environmental writing, as represented by five noteworthy poets and by authors such as WendelTrade Review...outstanding merits. At times, the scope of the work attains the encyclopedic. The discussion of lesser known authors and poets opens spaces of interest somewhat removed from a purely religious dimension. * Consciousness , Literature and the Arts *

  • Oxford University Press Nature of Design

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe environmental movement has often been accused of being overly negative--trying to stop progress. The Nature of Design, on the other hand, is about starting things, specifically an ecological design revolution that changes how we provide food, shelter, energy, materials, and livelihood, and how we deal with waste. Ecological design is an emerging field that aims to recalibrate what humans do in the world according to how the world works as a biophysical system. Design in this sense is a large concept having to do as much with politics and ethics as with buildings and technology. The book begins by describing the scope of design, comparing it to the Enlightenment of the 18th century. Subsequent chapters describe barriers to a design revolution inherent in our misuse of language, the clockspeed of technological society, and shortsighted politics. Orr goes on to describe the critical role educational institutions might play in fostering design intelligence and what he calls a higher Trade Review"David Orr backs his talk with tactics and deeds that include his own actions. He convinced Oberlin College to construct a science building that 'did not impair human or ecological health somewhere else or at some later time.' That was a big order and not easily done, but he attracted and organized the multi-talented team that did it.... The chapter labeled 'Education, Careers, and Callings' is particularly fine, and presents...solid suggestions for doable changes in education that will be considered radical by many ecologically illiterate educators, but are certainly the way to go. Good stuff, easily read." --J. Baldwin, Whole Earth, Fall 2002"The creativity of thought displayed is refreshing when compared to the hundreds of texts that criticise current practice without offering substitutes. And Orr's understanding of the role pysical surroundings play in human thinking inspires a vital alternative to the technological fundamentalism constricting so much current thought."--EcologistTable of ContentsI. Book SynopsisYou will never look at your cell phone, TV, or computer the same way after reading this book. Maxwell and Miller not only reveal the dirty secrets that hide inside our beloved electronics; they also take apart the myths that have pushed these gadgets to the center of our lives. With an astounding array of economic, environmental and historical facts, Greening the Media debunks the idea that information and communication technologies (ITC) are clean and ecologically benign. In this compassionate and sharply argued book, the authors show how the physical reality of making, consuming, and discarding them is rife with toxic ingredients, poisonous working conditions, and hazardous waste. Book SynopsisThe Tigris and Euphrates rivers run through the heart of the Middle East and merge in the area of Mesopotamia known as the cradle of civilization. In their long and volatile political history, the sixteenth century ushered in a rare era of stability and integration. A series of military campaigns between the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf brought the entirety of their flow under the institutional control of the Ottoman Empire, then at the peak of its power and wealth. Rivers of the Sultan tells the history of the Tigris and Euphrates during the early modern period. Under the leadership of Sultan Süleyman I, the rivers became Ottoman from mountain to ocean, managed by a political elite that pledged allegiance to a single household, professed a common religion, spoke a lingua franca, and received orders from a central administration based in Istanbul. Faisal Husain details how Ottoman unification institutionalized cooperation among the rivers'' dominant users and improved the expTrade ReviewIn this superb study, Husain attributes the Ottoman success in capturing and controlling this vast region in part to the empire's ability to harness the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates and manage the ecology of the area.... To write on such a complex topic with authority and clarity, Husain performed extensive research...[and is] well versed in the intricacies of environmental science, including hydrology, botany, and the study of germs and diseases. He demonstrates that a proper understanding of how environmental conditions influenced historical change requires studying the interaction between humans, rivers, climate, and disease. The utility of his interdisciplinary approach is in full display....Husain is able to tackle long-term and large-scale questions even though he starts from a well-focused time and place. His excellent work opens paths and provides a model for other scholars. * Reşat Kasaba, Journal of Interdisciplinary History *An empirically rich and methodologically sophisticated study that makes high-stakes contributions to various historiographies...In certain cases, the strength of some of Husain's arguments come from his ability to situate Ottoman practices of environmental management within larger contexts that non- specialists can appreciate....Husain deserves much credit for being able to weave such a remarkably complex (and fascinating) story for a region of the Ottoman Empire whose history is notoriously difficult to examine on account of a dearth of archival sources, particularly in Iraq—one of the many unfortunate results of wars in recent decades....Written in lucid and accessible prose, Rivers of the Sultan also serves as a model for how to write the environmental history of rivers. * Isacar Bolaños, Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies *Faisal Husain redresses the silence on the first two centuries of Ottoman rule, the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with this impressive study....Husain relates this fascinating tale of environmental control and ecological disaster in a clear and compelling style. His marshalling of diverse sources is impressive and convincing. Although this is ostensibly on the Ottoman administration of Iraq, its value transcends that region in providing key insights into how the empire managed its diverse and far-flung territories. It is also a cautionary tale for the present, arguing that the ecological future of climatically challenged regions requires, if not an overarching imperial control, then multinational cooperation. * Bruce Masters, American Historical Review *Husain is able to tackle long-term and large-scale questions even though he starts from a well-focused time and place. His excellent work opens paths and provides a model for other scholars. * Reşat Kasaba, Journal of Interdisciplinary History *Rivers of the Sultan... offers a fascinating glimpse into the political, social and economic histories of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. * Usman Butt, Middle East Monitor *Faisal Husain sets himself a truly formidable goal: to write an integrated history of the Ottoman Empire in the Tigris-Euphrates watershed. To succeed requires a polymath's grasp of hydrology, botany, irrigation, grazing, shipping, climate, fiscal affairs, and political structures. Against the odds, he triumphs and with a verve and elegance of exposition that makes this a model of interdisciplinary, environmental history. * James C. Scott, Yale University *Original and deeply researched, Rivers of the Sultan is both an important new history of Ottoman Iraq and a major contribution to Middle East environmental history. Combining ecological, social, and political perspectives, it offers vital insights into the nature and transformation of Ottoman rule. * Sam White, author of The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire *In this exemplary study, Faisal H. Husain analyzes the Ottoman Empire's management of the Tigris and Euphrates. Rivers of the Sultan reconstructs insightfully the ecological relations between the imperial center and its Eastern periphery and brings to life a lively history of various historical actors, from Ottoman governors, to cultivators of crops, to tribal confederations, who benefited from the rivers and their management. The book reminds us how the maintenance of law and order, the control of wealth, the politics of infrastructure, and the movements of grains and arms were deeply intertwined into the history of water itself. A fascinating exploration of irrigation, wetland exploitation as well as of natural disaster, famine and floods, this book changes the ways in which we evaluate Iraq's past and present. * Orit Bashkin, University of Chicago *Rivers of the Sultan is a significant contribution to defining intra-imperial relations by grounding the analysis in environmental studies. * Annie Greene, University of Chicago, USA, International Journal of Maritime History *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction Part I: The Amphibious State Chapter 1: Fortresses Chapter 2: Shipyards Part II: The Water Wide Web Chapter 3: Arable Lands Chapter 4: Grasslands Chapter 5: Wetlands Part III: The Rumblings of Nature Chapter 6: Havoc Chapter 7: After the Flood Conclusion Appendices Notes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisThis path-breaking study open the way for a better understanding of the environmental conflict, showing how language can be seen to shape our view of what environmental politics is really about and how those perceptions can differ between countries. The book identifies the emergence and increasing political importance of ''ecological modernization'' as a new concept in the language of environmental politics. This concept, which has come to replace the antagonistic debates of the 1970s, stresses the opportunities of environmental policy for modernizing the economy and stimulating the technological innovation. Combining abstract social theory with detailed empirical analysis, the author illustrates the social and political dynamics of ecological modernization in a detailed analysis of the acid rain controversies in Great Britain and the Netherlands. The book concludes by reflecting on the institutional challenge of the environmental politics in the years to come.Trade ReviewHajer establishes once and for all the importance of attending to the discourse dimension of public policy, and in this respect his is a truly pathbreaking work. * Policy Sciences *This superb book is one of the few successful attempts to apply contemporary sociological thinking to a detailed empirical case-study in the environmental sphere in a way which is genuinely enlightening for policy-makers as well as for academic social science disciplines ... Such challenging questions are a fitting conclusion to an excellent book. * Global Environmental Change *Maarten Hajer has delivered a book that is remarkable for its comprehensiveness and its incisiveness ... this volume establishes a firm foundation for the study of ecological modernisation and serious scholars of environmental policy will derive immense benefit from the author's astute insights. * Environmental Values *this is an important book which will interest many political scientists apart from those focusing on the environment ... There are excellent summary tables and a model of an index. For environment specialists, there are fresh insights on issues such as risk; the role of scientists and scientific data; and the emergence - with its institutional repercussions - of ecological modernization as the dominent way of conceptualizing environmental problems. The way he draws from German and Dutch primary and secondary sources is especially valuable. * Stephen C. Young, University of Manchester, Political Studies *
