JRP Editions Doug Aitken - Alpha: Man as House

Book SynopsisI became restless with the flat surface of the screen so the work gradually evolved into the rest of the space, says Doug Aitken of his multichannel film work. Lately he has been projecting from multiple points onto a single structure. And he has turned from wide-open and lonely landscapes (Electric Earth, Diamond Sea) to wide-open and lonely people (new skin). The protagonist of the surreal Alpha, played by cult actor Udo Kier is both: as he travels, he dematerializes and becomes the space that he inhabits. Luckily for readers, Aitken is as bored with the square shape of the conventional book as he is with the conventional screen: this collection of Alpha images, accompanied by text from the artist, is bound in the shape of a head in profile.

Book SynopsisThe Hot Seat is made from a series of drawings that focus on the impermanence of the physical things we perceive in our reality. The destruction of these objects is motivated simultaneously by the primitive desire to see things destroyed, the resentment of existence and our inability to control the effects of nature.Tim Lahan is a graphic artist and illustrator based in the USA who splits his time between commercial work and personal projects that include everything from self-publishing to painting. His work has been featured/collected in many different places in print, online, and in the physical world including places like Printed Matter, The New York Public Library, and the MoMA Library.

Book SynopsisThe children's book Would you rather. by English Author and Illustrator John Burningham was first published in 1979. Christoph Elias Meier and Mara Züst took Burningham''s incantation one step further and adapted the book's meaning so that it asks about the essence of the things. Now these things, often forgotten about, but nevertheless populating our world, can be grasped by pondering wonderful and ample questions. This creates a game of foolish ventures, mental leaps and revocable choices, accompanied by fascinating illustrations made out of sand by Carolina Cerbaro. Christoph Elias Meier studied history, politics and political economics and runs the writing and thinking studio schreib-service. ch. He is also part of the Wrongbrothers INC. Mara Züst studied history, art history and visual communications. She works as an artist, mediator and researcher and is the person in charge of the estate of Andreas Züst which runs the Bibliothek Andreas Züst, Oberegg (AI). Carolina Cerbaro studied visual communications and works as a graphic designer and artist. She is specialized in print and wallpainting. Furthermore she works as a mediator. They all live and work in Zurich.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisParis-based artist Caroline Ventura explores gestures, forms, and colors as well as their combinations and concepts in various media such as painting, drawing, mural art, and photography. The artist bookMore Beautiful Than They Arepresents drawings Ventura has created almost daily since 2020. In her drawings, Ventura combines a treasure of memories, encounters, forms, and symbols from her interior world with elements of pop and everyday culture. The artist inquisitively searches for the moment in which tension arises and magic happens. She juxtaposes graphic gestures, overlays forms and materials, allowing colors to clash and setting in connection what does not necessarily belong together. Page by page, Caroline Ventura searches for visual analogies from a subjective perspective to structure the ambivalences that characterize our relationships. The book that is designed by Dorothee Dähler features texts by Laura Breitschmid and Claire Hoffmann and a photographic essay by Dominik Hodel.

This volume presents four hundred and nine photographs found in publications on prehistoric art for contemplation, understanding, conjecture, incomprehension and misunderstanding.Peter Piller has been working with found images, photography and drawing since the 1990s. Book SynopsisIn 1962 at the age of 71, Joseph E. Yoakum (18911972) reported having a dream that inspired him to draw. Thereafter the retired veteran began a daily practice and over the next 10 years produced some 2,000 works. Yoakum was born into poverty, had very little schooling, and at an early age left home to join a circus. He wound up working with several circuses, traveling across the United States as well as abroad and becoming intimately familiar with the world's various landscapes. These experiences would provide the foundational memories that fueled his deeply spiritual vision decades later. When he began to put that vision to paper in his apartment on Chicago's South Side in the early 1960s, Yoakum quickly developed a unique visual language, independent and distinct from other artists in the city, such as those involved in the flourishing Black Arts Movement or the up-and-coming Chicago Imagist group. His drawings predominantly landscapes in ballpoint pen, colored pencil, pastel, a

Book SynopsisBorn in Quimper (Brittany) in 1971, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art. In 1996, his Vase Soliflore took its place in the Centre Pompidou's permanent collection. Giulio Cappellini noticed his work at the Paris Salon du Meuble in 1997, giving him the opportunity to create his first pieces of industrial design, and he was awarded the Grand Prix du Design by the City of Paris. Shortly after, he was joined by his brother Erwan and they began ongoing partnerships with international design brands around the world which are still going today. Ronan Bouroullec set up his Paris-based design studio with his younger brother, Erwan, in '99. For over two decades, the internationally acclaimed duo have co-created iconic designs for the likes of Vitra, Hay, Flos, Cassina, Ligne Roset, Magis, Mutina Established & Sons and Kvadrat. Their designs are held in some of the world's most coveted permanent collections, exhibitions have been devoted to their work, and monographs have been published, cataloguing some of their outstanding creations. Alongside their joint recognition, Ronan's drawings have been featured in many solo exhibitions including Giorgio Mastinu Fine Art (Venice, 2018), Galerie kreo, (Paris, 2019), Licht Gallery (Tokyo, 2021) and Casa Mutina (Milan, 2021-2022) - as well as group exhibitions such as Objects of Desire - Surrealism and Design 1924-Today', (Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany, 2019; CaixaForum Barcelona, Spain, 2020; CaixaForum Madrid, Spain, 2020-2021) and Un printemps incertain, invitation à 40 créateurs', (Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, 2021). His drawings can be found in a number of major private and international collections, notably the Art Institute of Chicago. Ronan Bouroullec is represented by Galerie kreo, in Paris and London. Whilst the Bouroullecs' collaborative designs involve a rigorous and complex process of research and testing, Ronan's personal work offer no interferences, no plans. Drawing which has been a regular activity since early childhood occupies an important place in his daily life. Today, his drawings are instinctive and exude freedom.

Book SynopsisWhite noise escapes from the 3rd floor of an opulent building located in the Eaux-Vives district. In an apartment, converted into a laboratory, hum a whole bunch of complicated machines linked together by a tangle of multicolored electrical wires. In the middle of all this mess, wrapped in transparent plastic sheets, a new experience will take place in a few moments. Indeed, for the first time in history, a team of researchers will be able to precisely decode the creative process of an artist. Plunged into an artificial coma, the Genevan painter Josse Bailly wears a sort of motorcycle helmet, from which colorful cables spring. At the end of the test, Bailly's abundant pictorial practice will no longer have any secrets for the scientists present. The mechanism of his artistic frenzy, this true fury to paint, will be translated in an intelligible and logical manner. Suddenly, a crackling sound is heard. Eyes rolling back, Bailly suddenly sits up square on the massage table transforme

Book SynopsisStamatis Papazoglou detects, collects, combines, destroys and reassembles. His paintings, collages and assemblages are congeries of fragments of our consumer society and the clear design of contemporary abstract painting. It creates multi-layered, complex imagery in which time and space overlap and intertwine. Stamatis Papazoglou is a material anarchist. In his pictorial universe any existing product hierarchy has been abolished. He taints and alienates the perfect and gives the devalued a new brilliance. Nearly anything can become the raw material of his art. The classic canvas, plastic sheeting, Perspex plates, wood panels of various shapes and color, but also a sheer wall may provide a potential painting background. From a doormat which has been used as a spray template over parts of torn billboards, the handle of a paint roller, photographs, broken stretchers, cut up pieces of old pictures, rubber bands, shelf brackets; all this stuff comes into consideration to function as a direct or indirect material.

Book SynopsisBEDU completes Jim Mangan''s trilogy on the subject of rebirth, which includes the series Winter''s Children and Color''d. Photographing models running completely and utterly naked (this is a consistent theme throughout the series) through the sands of the Sahara Desert, his dreamy photographs capture the very essence of inhibition, nature and freedom. Being Jim''s debuting project as a photographer (before he worked in the snowboarding industry before boldly quitting to pursue his life long ambition to be a photographer) Bedu demonstrates a clear step away from the colour dominated images of both Winter''s Children and Color''d and thus his progression and potential as a photographer. BEDU was shot in the Little Sahara Desert, Utah with the following models: Celine Boucher, Spencer David, Chris Van Dine, Alex Graves, Jenny Hong, Vlada Kleynburg, Corigan Kushma, and Peter Sutherland.

Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite Ixiptla Volume I

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Nahua concept of ixiptla derives from the particle xip, meaning skin, coverage or shell. A natural outer layer of tissue that covers the body of a person or animal, the skin can be separated from the body to produce garments, containers for holding liquids or parchment as a writing surface.Originally a Nahua word, ixiptla has been understood as image, delegate, character, and representative. Ixiptla could be a container, but also could be the actualization of power infused into an object or person. In Nahua culture, it took the form of a statue, a vision, or a victim who turned into a god destined to be sacrificed. Without having to visually appear the same, multiple ixiptlas of the same god could exist simultaneously. The distinction between essence and material, and between original and copy vanishes. This edition of Ixiptla is focused on the trajectory of objects collected and produced by archeologists plaster molds, facsimiles, drawings, photographs, and scale models , in an attempt to capture and replicate material evidences left by time; these objects emerge from a specific moment in time, producing a doppelgänger of the original milieu, which then takes its own course. For this first issue, a group of anthropologists, archaeologists, artists, and writers have been invited to reflect on the role of the model, the copy, and reproduction in their areas of research and practice.Ixiptla is a new biannual journal about trajectories of Anthropology, it has been initiated by the artist Mariana Castillo Deball. The first issue is published on the occasion of Expedite Expression, 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin, 2014.

Book SynopsisPublished by the CAPC musee d'art contemporain de Bordeaux in collaboration with BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE, this reference book surveys the history of the independent publishing house Beau Geste Press (BGP) through the publications of its founding members Felipe Ehrenberg, Martha Hellion, David Mayor and Chris Welch, and of the numerous visitors to its rural outpost - visual poets, neo-Dadaists and artists affiliated with the Fluxus movement - from 1971 to 1976. A 'catalogue de-raisonne' of all the printed matter produced by BGP, it is complemented by critical essays and first-hand texts that explore the working methods (economy and autonomy of production, distribution of books via post) and document the international influence of this short-lived 'community of duplicators, printers, and artisans'. Designed by Studio Manuel Raeder and edited by curator Alice Motard, this richly illustrated 472 page-book follows on from the exhibition Beau Geste Press, shown at CAPC from 2 February

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisYou ever read the back of a book and blah blah blah words and more words, and function. Poets depend on the emotional character of words. Manuals depend on the instructiveness of words. Yet words can be pronounced backwards or cut up and given new meaning, they can be looked at for their mathematical value, pondered over how they change in translation or seen as hiding messages within them. Therefore the various groupings of the same words can be made to perform completely different tasks. Shouldn't this be in italian? This book is not about words. Words can't describe what is going on in this book. Not all books are holy. Some fill holes. Some bridge gaps, some balance objects, hide things, make good kindling. Dear Sir/Madam, words fail me. If we were closer I would take you by the hand and show you what we could do. There are different ways to use the world. There are different ways to use the word.
