Book SynopsisAn introduction to pedagogy of dissensus. A pedagogy of dissensus is informed by the dissensual characteristics of art. The book includes both theoretical foundations and examples of how the theory is unfolded in different contexts ranging from educational practice to arts-based research. Motivated by the author's long-held interest in the role of art in society in general and education in particular, it is a vital new contribution to arts-based approaches to education. Referencing philosophers and theorists such as Jacques Rancière, Gert Biesta, Dennis Atkinson, and Helga Eng, Lisbet Skregelid demonstrates why art matters because of its ability to create necessary disturbance and resistance in education. In this book, she argues that art has something to offer education because it challenges existing norms, has no definitive answers, and contributes to new ways of seeing both oneself, others, and one's surroundings. Placing art at the center and enabling dissensus in education can

Book SynopsisA celebration of the work of contemporary architect David Rockwell, who works at the intersection of architecture and performance This unique insight into the projects and philosophy of renowned architect and Tony Award-winning set designer David Rockwell explores the remarkable range of his work, from restaurants and hotels to museums and Broadway stages. It is the first book to shine a spotlight on the relationship between architecture and performance and features contributions from leading voices and talents in fields as diverse as architecture, lighting design, and the culinary arts. David Rockwell's fascination with theater has long informed his built work. Drama explores the core principles that Rockwell uses to enhance the impact of his architecture, with contributions from experts across the creative world - from record producer Quincy Jones to chef José Andrés. It's both an exciting new insight into the work of an important contemporary architect and a compelling case for the virtues of interdisciplinary collaboration.Trade Review"Full of arresting images... Infused throughout the book is a relentlessly optimistic view that life can be made better and more beautiful if we start by simply designing better spaces, especially where people meet." - Associated Press "Get a behind-the-scenes peek into how some of the world's most spectacular sets come to fruition" - Elle Decor "What most distinguishes David Rockwell's work is its theatricality - its staging, scripting and razzamatazzing - and this book makes the point that, like spectacle, the ephemeral heightens the emotional impact of real life." - Design Observer "As its striking blue, curtain-like cover suggests, Drama embodies the excitement and anticipation of the theater. It is both a definitive collection of Rockwell Group's works and a compelling manifesto for multi-disciplinary collaboration. It distils the magic inherent in both theater and architecture and encourages us to look at creativity in a more personal, human-centered way." - Broadway World "Drama takes you on a journey of the art of imagining the drama of design." - Julie Taymor, director and writer of theater, opera and film "David Rockwell captures, in words, the way architecture on stage can place you in a moment in time - the same way seeing the sweep of the Brooklyn Bridge can evoke breathtaking drama. He explains it, and you sigh and say, 'Yea, that's exactly right. I get it.'" - Whoopi Goldberg "For the Soundtrack of America concert series [featured in Drama] that launched at The Shed NYC, David Rockwell and Adam Stockhausen designed a raw set that welcomed and united audiences and artists." - Steve McQueen "David Rockwell is a great leader and a great inspiration in the field of architecture, design, theatre design, and, well, you name it. He is a voracious creator, but he is an equally great listener with boundless curiosity. Drama shows you all sides of this great talent." - Frank Gehry

Book SynopsisMusic is an art form but also a social activity. It is a part of every human society, contributing to community, culture, and a sense of group identity. It is also fundamental to individual identity and personal well-being. In Music, Eugene Beresin traces the possible applications of musical expression for human health and happiness. At the heart of Music are powerful examples from the lives of real individuals, families, and populations. These stories cover a myriad of ages, instruments, situations, and purposes, to convey the universal power of music to help us all get more out of life. Offering practical ideas for integrating musical practice into a wide range of settings from the medical to the personal, Beresin provides a compelling evocation of the healing power of music. It is a must-read for practitioners, teachers, counsellors, and lovers of the art form.Trade ReviewMusic and the arts reach around all corners of the world and into all corners of our life and Dr. Eugene Beresin details many aspects of their purpose and importance in his book Arts For Health: Music. I think this is important information to share and it reinforces what all of us musicians and artists already know…that the arts (regardless of their type), when done with the right intention, are healing arts. -- Jeff Coffin, 3x Grammy winning saxophonist, composer, educator, author. Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Ear Up Records founder, The Mu’tet.Music is certainly a pleasurable and universal part of the human experience, but is it really possible that harms could be assuaged through harmonies, symptoms soothed by symphonies, remedies found in rhythm? As an expert Harvard physician, healer, and musician, Dr. Gene Beresin makes a forceful and persuasive case that the answer is a resounding, “yes” - scientifically elucidating and affirming music’s psycho-biological therapeutic effects and uncovering its power to heal. Informative, instructive, inspirational, students, clinicians, patients, and family members, will find solace and joy here. -- John F. Kelly, PhD, ABPP Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Director of the Recovery Research Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA USA. Award-winning songwriter, singer, musician, and producer. If you are in the group of people that think music is ancillary to your life - or extracurricular or non-essential - but have been waiting for someone to prove you wrong, look no further! Dr. Eugene Beresin has comprehensively, and in simple language, dispelled any hypothesis of the kind in his book, Arts For Health: Music. From heartfelt personal testimonies to factual medical data, this book beautifully explains the effect music universally has on humanity and why it’s important for individual well-being. It is a must have for all music teachers, students and professionals, as it gives language to what we innately already know. -- Terri Lyne Carrington - Grammy Award winning, drummer/composer/producer/activist, who is played with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Al Jarreau and many others.Music has a visceral, transcendent power that cuts across language, culture and age, and it can help us connect to each other, as well as to our innermost selves. In Arts For Health: Music, Gene Beresin has created a fantastic reminder of and argument for music’s power to lead us to healthier, more connected, and more fulfilling lives. -- Chris Eldridge - Grammy winning acoustic guitarist with Punch Brothers, Julian Lage. Anthem Press Occupational Devotion: Finding Satisfaction and

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe idea of occupational devotion, or devotee work, was conceptualized and incorporated in the serious leisure perspective as one of the two serious pursuits. The other pursuit is serious leisure itself, with both forms being anchored in activities that are immensely appealing and fulfilling. Despite such desirable qualities the serious pursuits constitute a minority of all work and leisure, these two domains being dominated by disagreeable work and hedonic casual leisure activities. The devotee occupations serve as full-time or part-time livelihoods for people fortunate enough to have found them. Such work has so far been observed to exist in four sectors of the economy: the liberal professions, consulting occupations, craft-like trades, and creativity-based small businesses. In ways set out in this book, devotee work roots in serious leisure, even while many participants in the latter have no desire to pursue the former.Trade Review“For almost half a century, Professor Robert Stebbins has led the way in terms of helping other people defi ne and determine the boundaries of their systematic pursuit of leisure. Having found ourselves in the midst of a life-changing global pandemic, this insightful and thought-provoking addition to the existing knowledge base could not have come at a more opportune moment in time. This represents a must-read for those who have found themselves questioning their why.” —Dr. Richard Keith Wright, School of Sport and Recreation, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand“This book will make a worthwhile contribution to the discipline of leisure studies, where the literature on this specifi c topic of occupational devotion remains relatively less developed. In my estimation, this book is poised to provide novel insights into the nature of occupational devotion, which advances serious leisure theory.” —Dr. Rodney Lim Thiam Hock, Lecturer in Marketing and E-Commerce, Swinburne University of Technology, AustraliaTable of ContentsList of Illustrations; Preface; Acknowledgments; Chapter 1 Serious Pursuits; Chapter 2 Liberal Professions; Chapter 3 Consultants; Chapter 4 Skilled Trades and Crafts; Chapter 5 Small Businesses; Chapter 6 Conclusions; References; Index.

Tate Publishing Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHenri Matisse (1869 - 1954) is one of the leading figures of modern art. His unparalleled cut-outs are among the most significant of any artist's late works. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors as his primary technique to make maquettes for a number of commissions, from books and stained glass window designs to tapestries and ceramics. Taking the form of a 'studio diary', the catalogue re-examines the cut-outs in terms of the methods and materials that Matisse used, and looks at the tensions in the works between finish and process; fine art and decoration; contemplation and utility; and drawing and colour.

Book SynopsisAn important and timely survey of work from the late 1960s through to the present, focusing on artists who draw on their own experiences to create works that challenge accepted or stable definitions of gender. Kiss My Genders celebrates more than 30 international artists whose work explores and challenges traditional gender categories. The book features works from the late 1960s through to the present, and focuses on artists who draw on their own experiences to create works that challenge accepted or stable definitions of gender. Working across painting, installations, sculpture, text, photography and film, many of these artists treat the body as a sculpture, and in doing so open up new possibilities for gender, beauty and representations of the human form. The publication includes texts from writers, theorists, curators, poets and artists who have made key contributions to thinking in the field. From pop culture and gender dissidence to the embrace of the ‘monstrous’ or ‘freaky’, from the politics of pose to transfeminism and politics on the street, each of these writers throws light on a different way of seeing. In addition to original texts by Amrou Al-Kadhi, Paul Clinton, Charlie Fox, Jack Halberstam, Manuel Segade and Susan Stryker, the book reprints a key text by artist Renate Lorenz and includes poetry by Travis Alabanza, Jay Bernard, Nat Raha and Tark Lakhrissi. Also featured is a roundtable discussion between a selection of artists and exhibition curator Vincent Honoré.

Book SynopsisVirginia Woolf’s many novels, notably Night and Day (1919), Jacob’s Room (1922), Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931), transformed ideas about structure, plot and characterisation. The third child of Leslie and Julia Stephen, and sister of Vanessa (later Bell), Woolf was a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group: that union of friends who revolutionised British culture with their innovative approach to art, design and society in the early years of the twentieth century. Portraiture figured greatly in Woolf’s life. Portraits by G.F. Watts and photographs made by her aunt, Julia Margaret Cameron, furnished rooms in which she lived. Written portraits were produced in the family home; her father, Leslie Stephen, published short biographies of Samuel Johnson, Pope, Swift, George Eliot and Thomas Hobbes, while editing the first twenty-six volumes of the Dictionary of National Biography. Throughout her life, Woolf, a sharp observer and a brilliant wordsmith, composed memorable vignettes-in-words of people she knew or encountered, and was herself portrayed by artists and photographers on many occasions. Illustrated with over a hundred works from public and private collections, documentary photographs and extracts from her writings, this book catches Woolf’s appearance and that of the world around her. It also points to her pursuit of the hidden, the fleeting and the obscure, in her desire to understand better the place and moment in time and in history in which she lived. In charting some of the milestones in Woolf’s life, author Frances Spalding acknowledges the seen and unseen aspects of her subject; the outer and the inner, the recognisable and the concealed.

Book SynopsisAt a time when state assistance to the arts sector has come under considerable scrutiny both in Europe and the United States, this book comprehensively examines the evolution of, and rationale for, state involvement with the so-called 'high' arts on both continents. This book offers an overview of the key economic issues arising in relation to the state and the arts in these regions, with a detailed analysis of the European and American models of state assistance to the high arts sector.John O'Hagan examines in detail the various channels - regulation, taxation and direct expenditure - through which the state interacts with the arts and compares and contrasts the experiences of America and Europe. Regulatory measures considered include the guarantee of artistic freedom, copyright, resale royalties for artists, and trade restrictions. He also considers taxation measures to support the arts, including deductions for charitable contributions to the arts, property tax exemption, and relief on artists' income. The discussion on direct expenditure covers state ownership of institutions, revenue funding and matching grants as well as new avenues of expenditure such as community arts/arts centres, and new revenue sources for this expenditure, such as lottery funding. Finally the book covers the non-profit making arts sector, and examines why it, and not the commercial sector, receives private and state funding. The State and the Arts will be indispensable for students and academics of public and social policy, cultural economics and public management. It will also be of considerable interest to policymakers and key players in the arts sector.Trade Review'O'Hagan has taken on a difficult task indeed in trying to sort through the evidence on the state and the arts. He has opened the door to numerous potential research papers, and made clear the need for much more work to be done in the area of data classification and collection. He has also done the valuable task of pulling together previous research from a variety of sources, many of which will not be familiar to economists. I will be consulting this book often.'Table of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Introduction Part I: Policy Rationale: Why the State gets Involved 2. Non-Private Benefits 3. Book SynopsisThis book draws on the lived experience of sounds capacity to move and shake us in direct, subtle and profound ways through speech, location sound, and music in documentary film. The associative, connotative and sheer emotive power of sound has the capacity to move and shake us in a myriad of direct, subtle and often profound ways. The implications of this for its role as speech, location sound, and music in documentary film are far-reaching. The writers in this book draw on the lived experience of sounds resounding capacity as primary motivation for exploring these implications, united by the overarching theme of how listening is connected with acts of making sense both on its own terms and in conjunction with viewing. The resulting thirteen essays of Soundings: Documentary Film and the Listening Experience cover films made from WWII to the present day in locations across Europe and the Americas, and in styles ranging from political propaganda, industrial promotion and educative exposition, to more aesthetically-driven films taking their bearings from avant-garde art. The authors draw on their experience in scholarly research, practice-as-research, and in the aesthetic and technical practice of documentary filmmaking. This mix of perspectives aims to widen and deepen the outlook of the recent and growing academic interest in the topic of documentary film sound.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Stories from a stay at the Arena Hotel; Weave Me a Rainbow; ˈThe march, the march of colour and patternˈ: Music and cinematography at the service of the creative promotion of the 1960s Scottish woollen industry; Sonicules: Designing drugs with sound: approaches to 69 sound design for flm, audiovisual performance and interactive sonifcation; Auralising Action Space: channelling a sense of play in 85 documentary sound design; ˈThe flm looks like how Ornette soundsˈ: Shirley Clarkeˈs music documentary Ornette: Made in America Rosa Nogués; Progress Music; Creative use of voice in non-fction narrative flm: an examination of the work of Peter Mettler; Documentary flm as a backdrop for active thinking; Centrepiece: The unwanted sound of everything we think we want; The ˈAppassionataˈ Sonata in A Diary for Timothy; A ˈSymphony of Britain at Warˈ or the ˈRhythm of Workaday Britainˈ?: When the Pie Was Opened (1941) and the musicalisation of warfare; Building a sonic image of a nation: Finnish documentary and propaganda flms in the early decades of sound flm; Raúl Ruizˈs Now Weˈre Gonna Call You Brother and the 255 problem of the peopleˈs sonic representation; Afterword.

Book SynopsisProfessor Seymour Howard's publications over the last forty years have introduced many innovative approaches to research in the history of art and archaeology. The arrangement of these two dozen essays in seven topical groups suggests their growth, origins, and relationships. Most of the studies deal with well-known canons of art from uncanonical points of view, which reflect the author's work as a practicing artist as well as his interdisciplinary training as a humanistic scholar. These rigorous and wide-ranging studies explore historic makings and meanings of graphic imagery, whose fundamental importance for understanding and communication has lost nothing of its power during the ascendance of literacy. The title essay and preface are new, as are the additional annotation and commentary; the author's bibliography and an index have been supplied.Table of ContentsContents: Preface I.
