Smithsonian Books Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to
Book SynopsisA taxonomic guide to the colors of the natural world, with 13 palettes and 110 color swatches, cherished by artists and scientists for more than 2 centuries”Before Pantone, there was Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours”—Architectural DigestThis beautiful pocket-size facsimile is a charming artifact from the golden age of natural history and global exploration. In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured via the written word, and scientific observers could not afford ambiguity in their descriptions. In the late 18th century, mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner devised a standardized color scheme that allowed him to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who used the actual minerals described by Werner to create the color charts in the book, enhancing them with examples from flora and fauna.Werner's handbook became an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature during his seminal voyage on the HMS Beagle. Werner's terminology lent both precision and lyricism to Darwin's pioneering writings, enabling his readers to envision a world they would never see. This new facsimile edition complete with ribbon marker brings the classic work back to life.

Fil Rouge Press Mastering Silhouettes
Book SynopsisA practical guide to silhouette portraiture with a gallery of carefully chosen examples, past and present, and workshop sections featuring 20 projects.Trade ReviewSilhouettes have been a popular papercraft since the mid-18th century when they first appeared. There are many different variations on the basic idea of a plain outline and they are all in this book. You don’t need lots of expensive art materials, machinery or even much room to cut silhouettes. I have fond memories of doing it as a child, including on long car journeys and on vacation, so was delighted to see a whole book on the subject. I was also surprised at how many different types of silhouettes there are, including ones using several different colors of paper, those with drawn-on features, or added gold paint, or caricatures and even silhouettes taken with a camera. Each chapter covers a different technique and gives an outline of the person who created it or is most associated with it. There are examples from the artist or from that period, plus modern versions, and to enable you to have a go, instructions on how to do it. These are not in many captioned steps, but have one or two good photographs and plenty of description. Reading about the early silhouette cutters is fascinating, and highlights a type of art largely forgotten. The final section has tips on presenting work and further examples of how it was done in the past. This is a handsomely produced book that is sure to give papercrafters a lot of pleasure. * Myshelf.com *Table of ContentsExpert instruction in the art of making silhouettes • 20 projects • Written by a high-profile silhouette artist

Purdue University Press Cybernethisms: Aldo Giorgini’s Computer Art Legacy
Book SynopsisWorking extensively as both artist and scientist, Aldo Giorgini (1934–1994) was one of the first computer artists to combine software writing with early printing technologies. His innovative process involved producing pen-plotted drawings that were embellished by painting, drawing, photography, and screen printing. This biography is the first to uncover the remarkable work and life of an underappreciated artist, providing insights into the innovative methods and computerized techniques he used to weave creations that seamlessly combined technological sophistication with artistic sensibility.Buried manuscripts, documentation, and art taken directly from Giorgini’s former studio in Indiana have been used to tell the story of this digital pioneer. The book explores the artist’s life as a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University as well as providing a catalog of his artistic contributions. Placing his work in the context of the wider development of computer art, the book also presents a valuable contribution to the history of the field. Giorgini’s papers have been recently transferred to Purdue University’s Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center, where they will be preserved and made accessible for future researchers of digital media art history. While complete in itself, this book also plays an important role in contextualizing and providing an access point for that collection.
