Taschen GmbH Basilius Besler. The Garden at Eichstätt
Book SynopsisWhen Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1593/95–1612) undertook a radical renovation of the Willibaldsburg Castle, overlooking the Altmühl River in Eichstätt, Bavaria, he also created a surrounding palatial pleasure garden of magnificence and grandeur. To preserve the garden for future generations – and provide an ‘evergreen’ record of its contents, compiling plants from all four seasons and presenting them in that order – he commissioned the garden’s director, Nuremberg apothecary Basilius Besler (1561–1629), and a team of engravers to immortalize its treasures in print. The resulting Hortus Eystettensis, published in Nuremberg in 1613 and containing 367 hand-colored plates and detailed descriptions, was a work of meticulous execution and spectacular diversity, and remarkably expensive for its time. As the garden contained a variety of plants imported from exotic locales, the three volumes exhibited a remarkable range, covering a total of 90 families and 340 genera. Due to the decorative, stylized execution of these illustrations, which began to see plants in aesthetic, rather than merely practical or medicinal terms, the book is seen as a milestone in the art of botanical illustration. While published before a time of standardized classification systems, it was nonetheless later described by Carl Linnaeus as an “incomparable work”.Besler’s catalog long outlived the gardens, which were destroyed in 1634 by invading Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War. However, a lengthy redevelopment project at the historic site has culminated in the opening of the modern Bastion Garden in 1998, containing many of the plants shown in the Hortus Eystettensis.Offering high-quality reproductions of these arresting illustrations, based on the copy of the Hortus Eystettensis at the University Library of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, this facsimile edition is accompanied by detailed plate descriptions of each plant’s botanical, pharmaceutical, and symbolic significance and an appendix of further essays which place the garden and the book in their historical contexts. This edition presents a valuable piece of botanical literature which, on the rare occasions where a copy appears on the market, can fetch prices of over $1,000,000 at auction. In line with Besler’s original intentions, this facsimile unfurls the garden to a wider audience and captures it for posterity.Trade Review“This book should find its way to many a library and coffee table.” * Chicago Botanic Garden Book Review *

Search Press Ltd Take Three Colours: Watercolour Snow Scenes:
Book Synopsis"There’s no grandstanding or showmanship, just solid, honest instructions and demonstrations that produce solid, worthwhile results." - Artbookreview.net Snow scenes make wonderful subjects for beginner watercolour artists - all you need is the know-how and confidence to give snow depth, sparkle and just the right amount of colour. Popular artist and author Grahame Booth will show you how to achieve beautiful results, using just three brushes, three paints and nine fantastic projects. Starting with a small but perfectly formed tool kit of three brushes, a mixing palette, watercolour paper and three tubes of paint, Grahame guides you step-by-step through nine projects, starting with a simple scene and progressing on to more complex ones. Even if you have never picked up a paintbrush, you will be amazed at what you will achieve by the end of this book. And along the way you will have learnt all the skills you need to start painting wonderful snow scenes of your own.Trade ReviewImagine being able to recreate a wintry landscape, using just three colours. Impossible, you might think by artist Grahame Booth reveals how to do just that in his book Watercolour Snow Scenes. Taking you step-by-step through nine projects, you'll be painting masterpieces in no time. * Crafts Beautiful *Using just three colours, Grahame Booth shows us how to paint snow scenes in watercolour in this new addition to Search Press's Take Three Colours series. The pared-down painting kit keeps everything simple. Grahame leads us through nine step-by-step projects progressing in complexity as we work through them. There's a helpful chapter on how to transfer your drawing to the watercolour paper and plenty of useful tips and advice to give you the confidence to have a go and develop your own snow scenes. * Leisure Painter - December 2020 *If the idea of using colours for snow – even if it is only three – seems like a contradiction read on. Snow, of course, isn't white but takes on the colour of the things that surround it, especially the sky or shadows of building and vegetation. Grahame's message is simplify – look, visualise and interpret. Don't overcomplicate your mixes or fiddle with details and you'll soon find that less – a lot less – really is more. In this easy-to-follow guide, Grahame will guide you through shadows, reflections, hills, trees, water and even a sunset in nine straightforward projects. * SAA *Search Press have become adept at producing series that include books that stand on their own merits rather than simply fitting into pre-defined slots. Much of that is down to having as simple an idea as possible. As a result authors don’t need to go into contortions to get the correct shape and are free to express themselves as they normally do. This makes the whole idea easy to explain to those same authors so that everyone has a clear idea of what’s required. That, of course, is the key to any successful book, but it’s surprising (and rather alarming) how often it gets missed. If everyone’s pulling in different directions, the dog’s sure not to miss out on its dinner. All of which is a preamble to saying that I like this a lot. Snow is as tricky a subject as water: it’s one of those things that isn’t really there. Water relies on reflection, but snow can be even more difficult. No, it’s not just matter of a large tube of titanium white or areas of paper left intentionally blank. Snow doesn’t reflect exactly, and it has an identifiable form in a way that water doesn’t, but it takes its appearance from the light and shade that fall on it. Cue plenty of opportunities for over-complication and far too many colours in the mix. And, as if by magic – 3 colours and 3 brushes. Less is more, simplification is always going to be your friend. As the nights draw in and who knows what precipitation the weather will bring, here’s a guide that will tell you all you need to know. No, not everything – that would be a tall order in just 9 projects – but enough for you to understand what’s happening on your palette, brushes and paper and you didn’t really need more than that, did you? -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Using the colours 8 Using the brushes 9 Projects 10 Snowy Field 10 Snowy Hills 16 Snowy Road 20 Streamside Tree 26 Winter Trees 32 Snowy Sunset 38 Snowy Mountains 46 Winter Cottage 52 Vermont Landscape 58 Transferring a drawing 64

Taylor & Francis Ltd Field Sketching for Environmental Designers
Book SynopsisThis graphic sketchbook is a primer for sparking imagination and creativity in landscape architecture and urban design drawing. Field Sketching for Environmental Designers is an ideal guide and companion for both beginning and advanced drawing enthusiasts. The text is profusely illustrated and loaded with fun and enlightening examples of work from a plethora of experienced artists, designers, planners and naturalists from around the world. Each chapter provides easy-to-follow instructions on a wide variety of techniques for field sketching and plein-air painting. The exercises are designed to help readers progressively build a set of skills that will help them construct meaning and gain knowledge from on-site, field observation.Trade Review“Using a plethora of historical and contemporary examples Chip Sullivan shows us how to carefully look at the world in which we live, while making relevant a seemingly archaic medium like watercolor. As a “why to” as well as a “how to” book, Field Sketching for Environmental Designers challenges the current supremacy of digital imagery by showing how much is lost when the human hand has been removed. And not only that: it’s also fun to look at and read.”Marc Treib, Professor of Architecture Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley, and editor of Drawing/Thinking: Confronting and Electronic Age and Representing Landscape Architecture.“This book should be on your favorites shelf. Landscape Architecture is a visual language. How do we learn to illustrate our ideas? The beauty in this book is the simplicity of its visual language and yet it is packed with “how to” knowledge. Chip once again builds a crescendo from the basic plan to elaborate pictorials. This is book useful for students and professionals for their entire career.”Tricia Keffer, Sunday Coffee Podcast“This visually inspiring publication offers a fascinating overview of various drawing techniques, methods, styles and visual communication strategies that is a ‘must-have’ for landscape architectural students and professionals. It captures various types of landscapes from the rural to the cityscape, and design layouts from the formal to the informal, using drawing to explain the spaces and scales, and capturing the audience’s attention.”Nadia Amoroso, Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture, University of Guelph, author and editor of the Representing Landscapes series“Chip's field sketching was one of many discoveries, filled with historical, technical, interpretive and aartistic learning from the experience and the observation. I particularly enjoyed the San Francisco sketch crawl ending in Levi's Plaza that showed a wide array of design language and materials, and users, each reflecting the era of its creation and its evolution. Sketching to capture such dynamic qualities was such a challenge and a valuable learning experience of its own!”Yumiko Nakano“Chip's field sketching classes have been absolutely invaluable in my personal artistic journey within the environmental design field. I've always felt that part of his rare brand of genius is how easily he's able to see the genius in everyone and everything else around him. Not only will he help you to develop in your own style, he will also help you to see more dimension in the landscape and in yourself as a designer/artist than you ever could have imagined!”Victoria King“Starting out as someone who felt very insecure in my ability to hand-draw and worried that there would be nothing positive to say about the drawings I could produce, it felt like magic how quickly my field sketching sessions with Chip fast-tracked me to the point where I could impress myself with my own drawings and see noticeable improvement from week to week. With Chip's unwavering support of everyone's individual style, I'm no longer afraid that my own artistic expression of the landscape is 'wrong,' simply because it may appear differently than others.”Victoria King"Chip's field sketching sessions helped me regain confidence in my ability to draw. His positivity, encouragement, and whimsy helped me return to the joy of putting pen to paper as a way of processing the world around me. As I progress in my career, I hold Chip's voice in my head to keep me positive during moments of self-doubt in the design process."Caroline Lindquest“This is a great tool for communication. The ability to promptly draw in the field is highly coveted as you analyze and use different parts of your brain when drawing. “Maria Lopez Vazquez"Anyone can master the art of sketching, and there's no better way to learn than by simply being out in the world. Strengthening the hand-eye connection and allowing yourself to quickly capture forms and gestures allows you to understand the world in different ways. Quick sketching is also a great party trick to impress others." Dalton WalkerTable of Contents1. Woods, Groves, and Grids 2. The Gesture of Landscape: Plants, People, Space 3. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Gauguin and Polynesia
Book SynopsisPaul Gauguin is commonly regarded as one of the greatest modern artists. He is renowned for resplendent, mythic imagery from Oceania, for a life of restless travel and for his supposed immersion in Polynesian life. But he has long been regarded ambivalently, and in recent years both Gauguin's sexual behaviour, and his paintings, have been considered exploitative. Gauguin and Polynesia offers a fresh view on the artist, not from the perspective of European art history, but from the contemporary vantage point of the region – Oceania – which he so famously moved to. Gauguin's art is revealed, for the first time, to be richer and more eclectic than has been recognised. The artist indeed did invent enigmatic and symbolic images, but he also depicted Polynesia's colonial modernity, acknowledging the life of the time and the dignity and power of some of the Islanders he encountered. Gauguin and Polynesia neither celebrates nor condemns an extraordinary painter, who at times denounced and at other times affirmed the French empire that shaped his own life and the places he moved between. It is a revelation, of a formative artist of modern life, and of multicultural worlds in the making.Trade ReviewImagine a book about Gauguin written by someone who truly knows, first hand, the Pacific islands, their history, their cultures. Imagine an author capable of looking at Gauguin’s paintings not as illustrations of ‘primitivism’ or ‘colonialism’ but as attempts – failures, successes, improbabilities – to come to terms with another way of life. This is the book. There is no other like it. * T. J. Clark, art historian and author of The Painting of Modern Life *Refreshingly original, Gauguin and Polynesia is an impressive and deeply engaging dive into aspects of Gauguin’s oeuvre that have largely evaded discussion and analysis. Guiding the reader through a crisscrossing series of historical trajectories and personal encounters, the author leans confidently into the puzzling contradictions and ambiguities that have intrigued Gauguin’s admirers and detractors alike, deploying paintings, people and places as sites of connection. A crucial addition to the literature, this remarkable volume draws on the unique vantage point of Indigenous histories and the powerful spiritual agency of the Islands to reveal a penetrating glimpse of life in Polynesia as it might have been for Paul Gauguin. Pointing to saliences and possible confluences, Thomas offers readers a compelling and imaginative analysis of Gauguin – one that illuminates and heightens our understandings yet leaves things open, fugitive and deliciously unresolved (just as the artist himself would have it). * Maia Nuku, Metropolitan Museum of Art *This brilliantly argued book by a distinguished anthropologist and historian of Oceania offers new perspectives on a figure until now understood through a Western-centred history of art. Drawing on ethnographic and historical sources, local knowledges and the experiences of Pacific artists, he reopens our response to many familiar paintings, complicating the ideas of primitivism, cultural appropriation, and sexual exploitation that currently frame discussions of Gauguin. By showing both Europe and Oceania in transformation, their histories dialectically linked, Thomas crafts a complex realism – a model for studies of travelling art and artists in an uneven modernity. * James Clifford, author of The Predicament of Culture *PRAISE FOR VOYAGERS 'Takes readers on a narrative odyssey' Wall Street Journal, Books of the Year 'Highlights a dizzying burst of new research' The Economist 'A refreshing addition to the canon of literature that contemplates Oceanic navigation' Noelle Kahanu 'I would not be surprised if, after reading this masterpiece, many readers are compelled to take up voyaging themselves' Science Magazine ‘An elucidating, accessible, and well-illustrated guide to the long history of Oceanic settlement and connections' * Minerva Magazine *

Prestel Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Book SynopsisThroughout his career, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner employed a highly inventive and original use of colour. He favoured novel applications of paint in unusual matte finishes. For Kirchner, colour was of primary importance, coupled with technique and style. He was one of the leading Expressionist painters of the time and was one of the founding members of the Brücke. In his deeply personal depictions, he focused on the places where he lived and worked and his close friends and associates. This book, accompanying a major exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York, provides a visual survey of Kirchner’s oeuvre and offers an in-depth analysis of different aspects of the artist’s output. Essays by leading experts examine Kirchner’s approach to colour, his interest in the decorative arts, how electric light affected his treatment of colour, the impact of Nietzsche on his work, and how he was profoundly changed by World War I.
