Book SynopsisQuinten Massys’ An Old Woman (‘The Ugly Duchess’) is one of the Renaissance’s most famous faces. In a fresh review of the iconic image, this book unveils the painting’s original context: its status as a pioneering work of satirical art, its debt to Leonardo da Vinci’s grotesque drawings, and what it tells us about the period’s complex attitudes towards women, age and normative beauty. The painting and its partner, An Old Man, are parodic portraits that mock the supposed lust and vanity of older women. Yet a closer look also reveals a figure defiantly flouting conventions and a painter subverting artistic expectations. The publication traces the eventful afterlife and enduring power of this seminal image: how she gained her nickname ‘The Ugly Duchess’ and inspired John Tenniel’s much-loved illustrations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), capturing the imagination of generations of readers. Book SynopsisKURT JACKSONBy Jeremy Mark RobinsonA new book about the British landscape painter Kurt Jackson (b. 1961). This new edition includes a text which has been completely updated. There are also many new illustrations. including photographs taken for this new edition.  EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER 4: One of Kurt Jackson''s appealing concepts is that the ocean is one of the last true wildernesses left on the planet. It''s an idea that I found very interesting when he explained it to me when we first met in St Just. I took it that he meant a spiritual as well as an ecological or natural wilderness. Jackson''s art can thus be seen as an art that is the border region between humanity and nature, between culture and nature, as well as literally tackling that area - the coast - which is neither land nor sea. <Note that Kurt Jackson is always facing outwards from the land, and looking towards the ocean, not painting with his back to the sea, and looking towards the land (and notice that the many boats and helicopters and such in this area are left out of the paintings, too). So Kurt Jackson''s Porth series, about Priest Cove, and all of his sea paintings, are very important in his art in articulating this idea of the ocean as the last wilderness. ''Have you ever wondered what''s out there?'' is a question that Jackson asks (it''s the title of one of his major paintings, too - the centrepiece of the Porth series). Kurt Jackson has repeated the question over a number of related works: the title of two 2004 pieces is The Last Wilderness In Western Europe? This was painted on Jura (in Scotland), and both pictures are consciously emptied of human marks - just empty moorland and a delicate blue sky. An earlier picture, part of the Cape series, was entitled Do You Ever Wonder What''s Out There? (1999) - an unusual composition in the Jackson oeuvre which puts the horizon very high, and focusses on the dark blue ocean ?ecked with white spray. Kurt Jackson isn''t that interested in many of the connotations of the ocean - the moon, time, goddesses, rebirth (though moons do appear in his art from time to time). He''s not really interested in religious or pagan or magical symbols in that way. And he''s not that interested in shipping, fishing, and all things maritime, like J.M.W. Turner was. REVISED AND UPDATED, WITH NEW ILLUSTRATIONSFully illustrated, with a revised text. Bibliography and notes. Hardcover. Also available in hardback. www.crmoon.comREVIEWS ON AMAZON:A well- written and thoughtful book. Quite academic and appropriate really for careful reading. REVIEW ON AMAZON:Very pleased with all aspects of my purchase: the book itself - so useful to gain such insight into an artist''s life and inspirations. Also, prompt delivery, well packaged and arrived in good condition.

Book SynopsisMidnight: The Tempest Essays, the second book in Molly Nesbit’s Pre-Occupations series, returns the question of pragmatism to the everyday critical practice of the art historian working in the late 20th century. These essays take their cues from the work of specific artists and writers, beginning in the late 1960s, a time when critical commentary found itself in a political and philosophical crisis. Illustrated case studies on Eugène Atget, Marcel Duchamp, Jean-Luc Godard, Cindy Sherman, Louise Lawler, Rachel Whiteread, Gabriel Orozco, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Lawrence Weiner, Nancy Spero, Rem Koolhaas, Martha Rosler, Gerhard Richter, Matthew Barney and Richard Serra, among others, continue the legacy of a pragmatism that has endured while debates over postmodernism and French philosophy raged.Trade ReviewNesbit has found a way to combine her expertise as an art historian with her interest in experimental modes of display. -- Daniel Birnbaum * Artforum *Nesbit schools the inattentive to keep alert for what is not there… -- Bruce Hainley * Artforum *Nesbit’s approach can feel scientific and a bit free-associative at the same time. ..she combine[s] the spirit of natural-history research — turning over rocks in search of clues — with that of poetry... -- Edward M. • Invisibility in Visual and Material Culture

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Invisibility in Visual and Material Culture

Book SynopsisThe essays in Invisibility in Visual and Material Culture contribute pioneering and revelatory insights into the phenomenon of invisibility, forging new and multi-disciplinary approaches at the intersection of aesthetics, technology, representation and politics. Importantly, they acknowledge the complex interaction between invisibility and its opposite, visibility, arguing that the one cannot be fully grasped without the other. Considering these entanglements across different media forms, the chapters reveal that the invisible affects many cultural domains, from digital communication and operative images to the activism of social movements, as well as to identity, race, gender and class issues. Whether the subject is comic books, photographic provocations, biometric and brainwave sensing technologies, letters, or a cinematic diary, the analyses in this book engage critically and theoretically with the topic of invisibility and thus represent the first scholarly study to identify its importance for the field of visual culture.Table of Contents1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere is significant academic interest in the field of art and neurological disorders. Considering how artistic expression may be modified by alterations in neural circuits, as well as in our bodies and everyday lives, associated with a range of disorders and diseases is a rich territory from which to understand the workings of our brains, the unique blend of factors leading to human art making, and disease itself. This book will be an exposé of how different neurological disorders may influence and/or relate to the artistic process, with a particular focus on visual art and painting. The book will interrogate the question of different aspects of neurological disorders and associated brain changes that may impact artistic expression (and vice versa) and will include devoted chapters on Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, Mood Disorders, Autism, and Schizophrenia. Moreover, we will elaborate on the question from the perspective of the artist themselves, with chapters that highlight the artistic process in the context of lived experience (either directly or indirectly) with disease-mediated brain changes. Finally, engagement in creative acts has been linked to therapeutic benefits in multiple disease processes and neuroplasticity, which is another line of inquiry directly addressed in the book. As a whole, the volume focuses on themes and concepts at the boundary of creativity and neuroscience in such a way as to be relevant to both the medical and broader (artistic) community. Book SynopsisIn 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre. The fascinating photographs by Manuel Bougot capture the special atmosphere of the villa Le Corbusier's painting is lesser known but was formative for his lifelong preoccupation with polychromy After extensive renovation work until 2021, E 1027, as well as the Cabanon, is open to the public again

Book SynopsisBy defining a concept of architecture based on the tactile experience and not on construction, this book allows us to explore both discursive practice as the study of architectural art and the integration of architectural art as a discourse of spatial practice. In order to take on this new lens, Non-Construction utilizes a cinematographic documentary image strategy that engages with a critical spatial exploration of current entanglements of art and research at the crossroads of art, theory, and architecture. A challenge to visual conventions, this book offers conceptual and aesthetic insights into spiraling and voiding sensual experiences, with implications for the decolonization of the documentary and cinematographic reaching far beyond architecture.

Diaphanes AG How to Teach Art?

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA cooperative reflection on how to teach art. How should art be taught? What kind of knowledge should artists absorb? How might an ordinary person become a creature addicted to the creative process? In other words, how can a non-artist become an artist? Such programmatic questions articulated by acclaimed Polish artist Artur Żmijewski were at the heart of the workshop “How to Teach Art?” Żmijewski invited a group of graduate and doctoral students from three Zurich universities—the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the University of Zurich, and the Zurich University of the Arts—to collectively reflect on their artistic practices. Over the course of four months, the group met several times a week for hourlong sessions, following individual and collective exercises induced by Żmijewski himself. This book retraces the workshop and its process by showing inconclusive, fragmentary results between theory and practice. How to Teach Art? presents drawings, videos, photographs, 16mm films, and accompanying reflections on the central premise, “How to teach art?”
